Once logged in you have the option to accept or reject the return. If accepted the return is automatically filed with Companies House, if rejected you are prompted to write an email explaining what changes need to be made.

One of the most common changes that need to be made are changes to shareholders. If rejecting a return because a share transfer has taken place, we require the following information:

• The amount of shares transferred
• The name of the shareholder who lost shares
• The name of the shareholder who received shares
• The date that the change took place

Whilst stock transfer forms should be completed and kept when the transfers take place, the annual return is the actual method used to let Companies House know about the change. If a company’s annual return is not due for a while and the directors are eager for Companies House to know about the new shareholding, an early annual return can always be filed.
