Word is the truck was transporting Floyd’s autos from Las Vegas to Miami when something went wrong just outside of Phoenix, Arizona early morning on October 7th….and the entire unit went up in flames.

According to reports, Floyd used his personal car guy to have the vehicles transported, who turned out to be Obi Okeke of Fusion Luxury Motors. Okeke is not licensed as an auto transport company (carrier or broker), but rather a car “dealer” (meaning he doesn’t personally own truck trailers for transport or even have a license for brokering to individual approved carriers, it’s likely he farms his transport loads out to individual carriers based on his choosing). Word is there are whispers of arson but that’s clearly all speculation at this point, nothing has been confirmed to that end.

Lesson learned here–even if you’re as wealthy as “Money” Mayweather, it’s probably a good idea to hire an reputable licensed and bonded auto transport company to move your vehicles, instead of your “car guy”. Hopefully Mr. Okeke did his due diligence when checking on the carrier’s excess cargo coverage (the amount that will cover vehicles in case of damage), or this could be very messy. We’ll follow the story to see where it all ends up.

Transport News: On a People’s Court episode that aired today (6/18/14, s17 e153) magistrate Judge Milian rules against carrier in a uShip case involving cargo insurance (or the lack thereof) and negligence involving the carrier.

The Rundown: Client buys motorcycle and chooses to utilize uShip for shipment of the vehicle. The motorcycle arrives badly damaged (due to negligence of the carrier, motorcycle was not secured properly). When booking the shipment of vehicle, client notes on uShip’s terms and conditions that vehicle is only covered at .60 per pound and opted to pay a $30 fee to purchase “additional cargo” coverage (through a 3rd party that uShip utilizes). Turns out that the excess insurance only covers any damage IN EXCESS of the client’s PERSONAL homeowner’s/auto insurance. Essentially the “excess” coverage that the client purchased did not protect him at all. The judge rules in favor of the plaintiff (the shipper) due to negligence of the defendant (the carrier) but limits his award to the amount already refunded to him by the carrier (somewhere just north of $300). The “extra” insurance coverage the shipper paid for ends up being completely useless. He says in his follow up comments that he won’t take the time to pursue the company that sold him the excess cargo insurance. He’s had enough.

The Moral: **BUYER BEWARE**. It’s already fairly well known that uShip allows any “carrier” to sign up/register as a transporter, but many are unlicensed and uninsured Illegal Carriers that have no Interstate Operating Authority and, in turn, do not have the Mandated Federal Insurance Requirements to conduct Interstate Commerce For Hire.

Some clients tend to be lured in by the ultra-cheap, too-good-to-be-true pricing found on uShip only to realize all too late that, just like in any other industry, you get what you pay for.

This particular shipper opted for the cheapest option and paid the price. The vehicle he purchased showed up destroyed and, to make matters worse, the so-called cargo coverage actually didn’t cover him at all.

Ran across these auto transport tips for consumers from a 2006 Edmunds.com article. Spot on advice…

The following tips could save you money and improve your peace of mind if you decide to ship a car:

Compare companies: Factors to compare include price, insurance coverage and time required for delivery as well as quality of service (i.e.-ratings).

Ask Uncle Sam: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration maintains a hotline (888) 368-7238 for consumers to check on a shipper’s license and insurance record as well as whether any complaints have been made about the company.

Location, location, location: A delivery between two major cities may be cheaper because more carriers cover that route.

Size matters: Bigger cars take up more space in the carrier and heavier cars add more cargo weight, making them more expensive to ship.

Season matters: Fewer cars are transported in winter, so rates may be lower then. If you ship a car north from Florida or Arizona in April or May, you may get better rates from transporters who have dropped off cars for “snowbirds” (retirees who move south during the winter months) and need to fill slots for the return trip.

Value matters: New or high-end vehicles should be shipped in an enclosed carrier, which could cost 60 percent more than open carriers.

Be flexible: “Typically, you contract for door-to-door delivery,” according to Wayne Harris, “but you could save money if you’re willing to drop the car off and pick it up at a terminal.”

Stay cool: “Be patient,” Kenneth Resnik advises. “Shipping a car is a big operation and not something you go through every day, but it’s worth it.

The QR code has been a popular punching bag for the nonplussed tech press, but Mercedes-Benz has figured out a way to not only make the over-endowed barcode useful, but life-saving.

The ADAC — or the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club — is Germany’s version of the AAA. And they require every automaker to provide a “rescue sheet” in vehicles sold in Germany. The sheet provides first responders with information about the placement and volatility of everything from fuel lines to airbags, pressurized cylinders, and the high-voltage cables fitted to hybrids. This gives paramedics, police, and firefighters a map of the vehicle so they don’t cut through something that goes “boom”…

It’s safe to say almost every car enthusiast would be happier if they could drive their classics every day. Unfortunately, the term “daily driver” is tinged with the feeling of compromise for too many of us.

Not so for Guy Newmark of San Pedro, California. Guy lives that gearhead dream of having his classics and driving them too-his 1964 Porsche 356C has been a daily driver for over forty years. His father bought the car from the dealership a month after its release, and it’s been in his family ever since…

This story is a perfect example of a recurring theme(s) we hear from frustrated clients who come to us looking to have their car shipped after waiting weeks with another company. This particular story deals with two all too common themes in our industry…deposits and the “bait and switch”.

Auto transport companies that require a deposit, collecting funds before they’ve even assigned a driver. Then, when the vehicle still hasn’t been picked up after week(s) (because the original, too-good-to-be-true rate was way too low to begin with), the transport company in question suddenly raises the rate by hundreds of dollars. The rightfully unhappy client requests a refund…only to get the run-around.

Moral of the story: DO NOT allow transport companies to take an up-front deposit before they’ve assigned you a driver. There is no need for that. Just as important, confirm that the rate that they’ve quoted you is the FINAL rate. Make sure the company you’re dealing with is a reputable one. Check their online reviews, check their BBB rating, and so on. Be an informed consumer when it comes to shipping your car!

Personally, I’m sure we speak for quite a few companies in the industry who will be thrilled when companies like the one in the story are forced out of business.
