White Chocolate Brownies with Pecans

I have a very sweet tooth, as you probably already know if you’ve been a reader of this blog for long. But lately, my sweet tooth is in overdrive. I’m making cookies almost every other day. A cupcake piled high with buttercream is usually one of the first things I think about in the morning. I want to chase every big bowl of fresh fruit with a bowl of ice cream.

I’m going to blame it on the baby and my weakened self-discipline, but it’s getting a little out of control. I need to reign it in, “detox”, or something along those lines… eventually, someday.

But not today, not when there are white chocolate brownies with pecans.

Cheese Biscuits with Scallions and Black Pepper

Blogging has enriched my life in so many ways, but probably the most rewarding is the friendships that have resulted because of it. Through blogging and social media I’ve made friends with other bloggers from all over and while some remain only online friends at this point, but others have become friends in real life. One such friend is Kelley of Mountain Mama Cooks. She’s from Park City, Utah and we’ve gotten to know each other through local food blogger gatherings.

We got together over the weekend to cook and bake, to talk blogging and food photography, and of course, to eat some great food. What was on the menu? Rich soup and cheesy biscuits, perfect for a chilly winter afternoon.

Blueberry Muffins

Blueberry muffins… too basic, too boring? I admit that when presented with an option of muffins, I usually choose something else. Maybe something chocolately or with a streusel topping. In fact, before I baked these, I couldn’t tell you the last time I had a blueberry muffin.

These blueberry muffins are different. They are not boring, they are not dull. And I’ve been wishing I could start every morning with one (or two, or three) of these muffins, warm and fresh from the oven ever since I made them.

Red Velvet Pudding Pie

I made you a pie. And not just any pie, a Red Velvet Pudding Pie. I was going to save it for Valentine’s Day but I just can’t wait any longer to show it to you.

It’s got a chocolate cookie crust. It’s got a rich silky pudding filling with a subtle chocolate flavor and hint of tanginess, tinted red of course. And it’s got a fluffy whipped cream topping. It’s everything you can imagine a red velvet pie to be.

These are all a few of my current favorite things. I can’t get enough of ‘em. And because of these mini tarts I’ve got something new to add to the list, mushrooms and puff pastry.

Dutch Baby Oven Pancake

I’ve been feeling the breakfast vibe lately. That every lazy morning should be greeted with sizzling bacon, crisp hash browns, and fluffy pancakes drizzled with fragrant maple syrup. After I’ve made the food, and my husband has brewed the coffee, we sit down in our pjs to eat while the dog lays at our feet and the morning light streams through the picture window behind us.

It’s a nice way to start the day, no?

On one such morning I had a hankering for something a little different and found just the thing in a dutch baby oven pancake. It had been quite a while since I made one and I was happily reminded that you don’t always need a lot of fuss to create an impressive dish.

Peanut Butter Blossoms

These peanut butter blossom cookies were an absolute, no-doubt-about-it, pregnancy craving. Ever since my Mom mentioned making them last week I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I wanted these cookies, I needed these cookies. I would go crazy if I didn’t have them.

And so I made some. It’s probably been ten years since the last time I had a peanut butter blossom and they tasted just the way I remembered. There’s nothing fancy about them, just a peanut butter cookie with a Hershey’s kiss in the middle. But sometimes old standby recipes are exactly what hits the spot.

Chocolate Cola Cake with Toasted Coconut and Pecan Icing

In preparation for my husband’s birthday last week I handed him one of my favorite cookbooks, Sky High: Irresistible Triple-Layer Cakes, and told him to pick any cake he wanted and I would make it for him. He flipped through it, inspecting all of the beautiful glossy photos and narrowed the list down to a handful that stuck out.

It took him a few days to select the one he wanted (I don’t blame him, it’s a hard decision when faced with so many tasty options!) and finally chose this chocolate cola cake with toasted coconut and pecan icing. It’s a long title, but you can think of it as a variation on german chocolate cake.

Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Doughnuts

Oh, doughnuts. You and I have had quite the history. I ignored you for the first half of my life, dismissed you entirely actually. I was not a fan. But somehow, and I think a new Krispie Kreme franchise in my town might have played a part, I came around.

I loved you, and you loved me. We enjoyed a few years of bliss before you turned on me. Or rather, my metabolism turned on me. Now you’re a rare treat when I’m feeling indulgent.

These days I’m feeling quite indulgent.
