Herbs are really the perfect choice for a container garden. Container gardens are perfect for those that do not have the time to spend tending a large garden outside or maybe disabled and simply not be able to take care of a large garden but would still like to grow a garden. Now who would not enjoy the smell of freshly grown herbs?

You are going to need to figure out what kind of container that you are going to grow your container garden in. Are you going to grow your herbs in a window box outside your kitchen? Are you going to find some decorative planters to plant your container garden in. Make sure you select something that will go with the décor of your home.
Another thing that you will need to take into consideration is what types of herbs will you be growing in your container garden. Many herbs are quite pretty to look at and they can serve a variety of different purposes. You can use herbs for crafting, medicinal purposes and as cooking aids.

Be sure to make sure that the soil in your container garden is properly fertilized w hen you are working on getting ready to plant your herbs. Doing this will make sure that you will be growing the best possible herbs, you will also want to make sure that your herbs will be getting the sunlight and water that they need to perform at their very best.

You are going to find that there are many herbs that look very similar. It is for this reason that you are going to want to take measures so that you will be able to tell them apart as they are growing. You should make some type of markers so that you will be able to tell your herbs apart.

Now, when you are looking into container gardening, look into the benefits that you can get from growing herbs. For one they smell delightful, there are a wide variety of uses for them and they can be easily harvested out of a container garden.

Having solid garden plans in place is something that needs to be done in order to have a successful garden. You want to make sure that you know what kind of garden you are going to plant and where you are going to plant it before you even get started purchasing your supplies.

If flowers are in your garden plans there is one thing you need to do first. You need to first of all do the research needed in order to see what flowers are going to be able to successfully grow in the area of the world in which you live. If you decide you like a flower but is will not thrive in your area you are going to have to figure out what flowers will grow well that are going to make suitable replacements. The garden plans that you have in mind for your garden need to include what types of flower gardens that you will be planting and how many gardens that you are planning on planting. For example wil you be planting flowers outside or inside in pots and hanging baskets or will you be doing a combination of both.

So the next item that should be addressed is do your garden plans include a vegetable garden? You are going to need to decide which vegetables that your family is going to eat and what vegetables that you want to try. Be sure that you are picking out vegetables that are going to grow successfully in your part of the world. Then you are going to have to decide what kind of vegetable gardens are going to fit into your garden plans. Will you go with the traditional outside garden or will you be planning to try to grow vegetables in a raised bed or a container garden? How large a garden that you will have will also play a part in whatever your garden plans happen to be, will you grow enough to enjoy picking out of the garden this summer or are you planning on preserving your harvest to enjoy for as long as possible.

You will find that the internet is going to offer you a great number of good ideas of different types of gardens. All you should have to do is develop a solid plan and follow through with it and you are going to have garden plans that are going to develop into a fantastic garden.

<a href="http://todaysgardenideas.com/basic-gardening-techniques/wildlife-and-child-friendly-garden-deterrents/attachment/garden-ideas/"rel="attachment wp-att-317" >Wildlife, including birds and other animals can sometimes be protected, such as bats, and it is illegal to disturb any nest in the wild. However, even the RSPB will acknowledge that it is sometime beyond a gardener or homeowner’s capability to ignore damage caused by wild creatures. The purpose here to attempt to deter said creatures, not to actually harm them.
Do bear in mind that no method is perfect. For example, if you want to attract certain birds like tits or robins, you will have to accept that you may end up with green parakeets and the like as well. Some animals need to be kept out of your garden. For example if you have a pond, you don’t want herons picking out your fish, if you keep rabbits, foxes will not be welcome and so on. Many people loathe sparrowhawks and starlings, usually because they are a nuisance.

Do be aware that there are many visual and audible deterrents for use on farmland and other open space situations away from housing. These are not suitable for domestic use in the most part. They are also not species specific so be wary of using them. It is usually perfectly legal to deter birds but the bird must not be harmed or trapped, nor can they be prevented from attending to an existing nest. If you plan to deter birds, make sure they have elsewhere to go otherwise all you will do is upset and distress them.

Herons can be discouraged form ponds by installing a specialist pond cover which will also protect children and pets from drowning. Foxes can be discouraged by ensuring no food scraps are available, nowhere cosy can be taken over for nesting and sleeping, and a good solid fence is installed with no stepping places for the fox to climb over easily.

It is also possible to have a pretty and tidy garden that is welcoming to wildlife.

If you are planning a new garden, look around to see what grows locally. If you have something growing naturally and wish to keep it, leave it where it is instead of trying to move it. Above all, be gentle with the planting and take your time to give wildlife a chance to adapt.

Provide as many habitats as but do focus on what can be done well in the space you have. A hedge is a wonderful shelter and can feed wildife as well as provide a run for safe transportation. You can also create smaller microhabitats in your garden, depending on the creatures you would like to attract.

Long grass provides habitat for egg laying and over wintering of caterpillars and leather jackets. Blackbirds and starlings search for leather jackets (cranefly grubs) in short grass. Different species of tree and shrub and flowering plants provide nectar and other food sources through the year.

Any water feature is great for wildlife. Shallow areas are used by bathing and drinking birds, emerging dragonflies and is somewhere for amphibians to lay eggs. Deeper areas help aquatic insects survive cold spells and are a good place for newts. If you have young children or pets, you may want to forgo having a pond though.

Wildlife requires two fundamental things: somewhere safe to breed and shelter and somewhere to forage throughout the year.

Climbers provide shelter and roosting and breeding sites for birds. A thick, well-developed, thorny shrub bed or hedge provides nest sites and shelter for wildlife. Other great ideas include a bat box, a pile of leaves or hollow log may be used by a hibernating hedgehog and is good for beetles and other specialist beneficial insects, fungi and mosses. In a wildlife garden, you are best leaving the tidying up of hedges, autumn leaves and dead branches until early spring to provide shelter for insects through winter. This also helps retain seeds and fruit for birds and small mammals throughout winter. Many baby birds need insects - a good source of protein - if they are to grow strong and healthy and survive the winter. A variety of garden plants encourages these insects.

Short lengths of drinking straws, hollow canes or plant stems, tied in bundles are excellent nesting sites for beneficial lacewings and ladybirds.
Early and late flowering plants provide nectar for insects at critical times - just after emergence or prior to hibernation.

Ivy is a late source of autumn nectar for insects and late winter fruit for birds.

Fruiting bushes are a good source of food for birds and mammals during the autumn and part of the winter. Annual plants that produce many seeds in late summer are a good source of seed for birds through autumn into winter.

When planning a new garden, it is important to lay things out ahead of time so you can visualise what plants you want. It is the planting you select that will dictate the amount and type of soil preparation required.

When you are happy with your layout, get digging. Make sure you are up for the job otherwise bring someone in to do the digging for you. A sprained back will put your project on hold for a long time. The best time to prepare your soil is autumn. Depending on the planting you have decided on, you may need to add manure or gravel and these will need to settle before you begin actual planting in spring. Permanent features such as decking can be installed now though.

The best place to find plants is in other people’s gardens. Take cuttings (with permission, of course) and start on the route of the time honoured method of trading plants. You could also buy plants at a nursery. Don’t be tempted to buy herbs in a supermarket as they will be force grown and frail. Buy from garden centres or grow from seed. Never take plants from public areas or the wild.

You can save quite a lot of money by buying bare root plants for early Spring planting. These are sold in their dormant state, and should go into the ground as quickly as possible. Soak the roots before planting, and dip them in a thin slurry of mud to prevent them from drying out. All other plants should be removed from their pots before planting. Tip them over and tap the bottom and sides of the pots to loosen the root mass, and then let the plant fall free. Never pull plants out of their pots by the stems… that’s like being pulled out of your seat by the throat. You wouldn’t like it; and neither do the plants.

You’ve just moved to a new house and the garden is a wilderness… What to do and where to start? The planting is undoubtedly the most rewarding and exciting point in the production of a garden and this is why it is so important to understand and prepare your site. So often, we pay no real attention to this planning stage, planting what we like where we like with no real thought for the longevity of the plants and how they are gong to impact our enjoyment of this outside space. Some horticultural good sense is required and this is where we come in.

First off, decide what sort of garden you want. Who is going to use it and what for? If you have kids who want to play football, rabbits in a run, yourself reading a book or a desire for an outside entertaining space you will need to design your garden to fit these needs. You can always tweak things around later. Plants can be moved, but you’ll need a theme so that you can have a blueprint to follow. You may decide to go for a wildlife garden or a barbecue based garden. It is entirely up to you.

At some point you need to see what the micro climate of your space is. Where does the sun rise and how does it set? Which bits of your garden are sunny and which bits are mossy and damp? Do you get a lot of rain or do you have to contend with salty sea air? Is your land sloping? Are there any large trees that need to be worked around? Most importantly, what type of soil do you have? Is it loamy or chalky, alkaline or acidic?
It is a good idea to call your local public utilities provider or municipal planning department, in order to determine whether or not there are any pipes, cables, or other surprises lying beneath your soil. Discovering something by accident may prove costly.

Get yourself a sheet of paper, a pencil, a cup of tea and go to an upstairs window. Draw out the boundary of your garden, Mark an arrow pointing north, draw in any permanent features that you cannot change, making sure to draw in the umbra or shadow under any trees. Now decide where you would like to place that deck, and this bed, that lemon tree and this pond. You can mark these out on the paper then go downstairs and use an aerosol to mark out on the ground. Then go back upstairs and have another think. It is advisable to spend a couple of days on this.

Spring is upon us, time to get back into the garden and start doing all the things we need to do to ensure we have a glorious outside space. So what do we do? We get out there and get on with it.

Let me share a statistic here before we go any further. Come spring, gardening-related injuries reach levels of epidemic, both in numbers and intensity. Rushing back into your garden in spring is tantamount to a professional footballer going straight into a match after the holiday. Doctors are warning people to at least warm up, if not get fit, before going out in the garden.

Gardening injuries vary widely, from your common garden variety blisters and calluses to crushed extremities, puncture wounds, pulled ligaments and, especially worryingly, herniated discs. As an absolute minimum, you ought to be doing some gentle stretching and warm up exercises before going out to the garden. There is more you can do to protect your joints and muscles but the warming up is pretty important whatever your age or fitness level.

There are many ways to make sure you are able to keep gardening throughout the summer. For example, to cushion your knees, use a knee pad or fold up an old blanket when you have to kneel down. Another trick is to alternate tasks so you don’t spend long digging but move on to pruning for a little while, then do some weeding and come back to the digging. This will avoid repetitive strain injuries.

It is especially important to squat instead of bending over from the waist, especially if you are lifting something up, and remember to face the way you need to go so you don’t turn awkwardly and twist your spine. This way you use your leg muscles instead of your backbone to bear the weight as you straighten up. Similarly, if using a hover mower, go up and down in straight lines, don’t swing from side to side. Also, using smaller implements, especially when digging helps because there is less to carry. It may take a bit longer but you will actually finish the job instead of spending the rest of the day in casualty.

Perhaps the best, simplest and most succinct advice would have to be: if it hurts, stop.

Many people in the gardening world are turning toward creating butterfly gardens. These gardens can attract many different types and variations of butterflies. Butterfly gardening is very quickly becoming more and more popular. It is said to be one of the fastest growing and most popular hobbies today. People get great joy from seeing beautiful butterflies fluttering around their gardens. Butterflies also add color and life to gardens.

If you are planning on starting a butterfly garden the first thing that you need to do is find out what kind of butterflies are in your area. There are several ways to do this. You could contact your local wildlife refuge and they can give you information. You can also have a field guide go outdoors with you and help you determine what species are around. There are also sites on the internet that have information available about different species of butterflies that are available in different areas. It is easy to find out what types of butterflies are available and most frequent in your area.

You should make sure that your butterfly garden is planted in a sunny area. However, the area that you plant in should be free of harsh winds. Butterflies need to feed in sunny areas because they have to stay warm. However, they will not fight strong winds when they are trying to stay on the plants and eat, so they will end up going somewhere else. You should also put some smooth, flat stones in your garden in the sunshine so that the butterflies have somewhere to rest while they are warming themselves up. Butterflies need water just like every other living thing does. You can keep a mud puddle located in a sunny location or you can get a bucket and fill it with sand. Then, add enough water to moisten the sand.

There are two different kinds of plants that the butterflies use. One type of plants provides nectar for adult butterflies to eat. The other kind provides food for baby butterflies to eat. It is a good idea to find out what kind of plants are native in the area where you live and then plant these instead of exotic plants that are not compatible. The butterflies are mostly likely already adapted to the native plants and will be much more likely to feed from them than to risk feeding off of something new that they have never eaten before. This ensures that all of the butterflies are kept safe and free from harm. It protects not only the adults, but also protects the babies that are growing and trying to thrive into adulthood. Just as any human would not eat anything that they were not certain off, butterflies are the same way.
