Good post from Charlie on how mainstream media works, and the opportunity for emerging media to adopt an important role. "Mainstream news can’t headline the most important or most deserving issue in the world every day. Otherwise the top story would always be Global Warming. So don’t get too pious or upset if new stories get to the top of the agenda."

The Economist's attempt to draw parallels between what's happening to the news industry today and what happened to it when the telegraph was invented is a little obvious – especially if you've read Tom Standage's excellent book The Victorian Internet – and perhaps just a tad glib.
