The Nikon D800 CMOS FX-Format Digital Camera boasts a resolution of 36.3 MP. This is the type of resolution that, on a bright day, would allow you to see a bee buzzing around a rose petal and give you the ability to not only have bee in perfect focus, but also the rose and the early morning dew drops if you are shooting at that hour.

Let’s face it, a body that delivers a 36.3MP FX-format (35.9 by 24 mm) image through a CMOS sensor is the camera body to beat in “horsepower” race that seems to be taking place in the Digital Single Lens Reflex (dSLR) camera market today. Indeed, a just a few weeks ago, we were remarking on the Nikon model that delivered better than 24 MP and now they have jumped what seems to be a whole generation of camera technology to present a body that delivers a 36.3 MP image, something that was truly unheard of as recently as a year ago, unless you were talking about some very high-end cameras that were made for digital filmmakers who needed to shoot what might be considered the proverbial “gnat’s eyeball” at 30,000 feet.

The D800 is not only a camera that delivers 1080- high-definition broadcast quality video, it does so with mininized rolling shutter and you have the ability to watch simultaneous live output on external monitors and record uncompressed HDMI video. This is the type of performance that moviemakers expect when they are shooting scenes.

Imagine having a camera about the same size as any other standard dSLR is would mean that body harnesses for steadycam shots could become smaller while the same camera would be nowhere as intrusive into everyday life.

The D800 also offers multi-area Full high-definition digital-moving video recording mode as well as comprehensive high-fidelity audio recording and playback control.

It is true that this is not as small as a standard dSLR at 57.5 by 32.3 by 48.4 but think of this. This is all in a unit that weighs about four pounds.

In truth, this is — at least now — really made for the video industry where you need cameras that can handle multiple stereo inputs and output, as well as provide you with peak-reading audio meter displays. It also allows you DX crop mode so that it can use and maximize the wide body of Nikkor lenses that area available (some of the best optics around that feature reduced chroma, optical reflectivity and more). And, the D-800 still deliver 1080p resolution hour after hour of shooting.

Interestingly, the D-800 features an optical low-pass filter in front of its sensors. This filter offers a slight blur that helps to reduced false coloration and other aberrations when you shoot repetitive color imagery.

The D-800 not only cranks out JPEG and TIFF imagery, but it will also turn out RAW or NEF imagery so that video editors can take advantage of it. This is the type of camera that is ideal for not only studio photography, but also commercial photography under a wide range of conditions. It allows the photographers to select and use the lenses they want to use but also to Capture NX2 software for flexibility.

The D-800 is Nikon’s top-of-the-line and we think you can see why. Professional videographers will be using this and its successors for many years to come.

When you think about it, the name Netbook more aptly describes the a products such as HP’s Mini 210-4150NR. A netbook is a notebook computer that is built primarily to work on the Internet, so the name Net works and the fact that it is a tiny notebook (book) works as well, so you have the name Netbook.

In reality, anyone who opts for the HP won’t be disappointed as it is a 4.8-pound lightweight pack quite a wallop. For starters, if you are looking for a lighter-than-normal sound experience then you won’t be disappointed with the HP as it uses Beats Audio(TM), which delivers better audio to users than you would ever expect.

Oh, you might expect that the HP would have a couple of small, tinny tweeters that would deliver some sort of sound and you might expect a half-way reasonable mid-range speaker to deliver sounds in the 3,000 to 15,000 Hz range, but when you listen to the speaker set that HP has installed int its Netbook, it literally is one for the computer ad books (remember those ads a few years ago that had the listener in a deep leather chair hanging on as the music blasted into and around him; that’s the way it seems with the HP). The music, while not Carnegie Hall quality (you can’t think a tiny speaker will deliver that type of rendition no matter what type of rare earth magnet and speaker cone material, do you?) is still excellent.

And, when you think that this type of sound emanates from a netbook-style PC that’s on 16.3 by 4.3 by 10.2 that is only 4.8 pounds, you know you have a powerful worktool in your hands.

Yes, it would be nice to think of this as a “kid’s computer,” leaving you to find “something better” — meaning that the little computer is for kids and that we would pick up the “real” computer — especially if the company was paying — that offered the 17-inch screen; 8 GB of memory; four or more USB ports; a bidirectional printer port; mouse/keyboard port; VGA port; huge, fast hard drive and DVD/blu-ray player. In other words, you get the laptop — on the company, of course, that you can use to watch 3D movies and the like, while the “kid’s computer” handles their homework.

If that is your thinking then within about 20 minutes of using the “kid’s computer (Netbook)” and the “real computer (powerful i5/i7 Quad core processor and memory)” you will find that you will be using the Netbook not only because of its size — it’s a whole lot lighter than the “real computer,” but it also does everything the “real computer” does, including interfacing with four USB devices, printers, monitors and the like, in a size factor that’s mind boggling.

It is lightweight and yet the backlit screen has great color rendition and contrast so you can use any program that will work with Intel’s Atom N2600 processor (an i2 Quad dual-core low power draw microprocessor that is aimed for the Netbook market).

The HP features a huge — for a Netbook — 5,400-spin hard drive. It comes equipped with 1GB of memory and features a 1MB cache and the lithium-ion battery that powers an almost full-sized spill-resistant chicklet-styled keyboard.

The HP network-aware Netbook recognizes WiFi Standard b/g/n, meaning that it will operated at any speed from about 10 Mbps to over 300 Mbps.

Overall, the HP is a fine value and you’ll find that it may be a good assistant. By the way, your kids will love the “real computer” because they will be gaming on it. Indeed, you’ll probably find the 3000 Intel Chipset doing the video work in both.

If you have been around digital photography for any length of time you have literally seen a digital photography revolution in less than a decade when the maximum resolution was 3.2 MP and the saving medium was the floppy disk; it has been a change.

At one time, the Canon Powershot A1200 was a top-of-the-line model. Now it’s an entry level digital camera with a reasonable level of resolution. When cameras such as the A1200 were first introduced they were reasonably expensive and offered 12.1 MP resolution. Today, that type of resolution is found at the entry level, when you have cameras that are more costly but which also offer resolution in the 23MP level, as well.

In reality, 12.1 MP is excellent resolution for just about any usage, unless one is going to blow a picture up the size of a building wall. For the most part, most high-definition TV’s run at a native resolution of 1080 p, while the Canon does 720 p. It turns out that 720 p is also a high-definition camera mode that shows quite nicely on a high-definition receiver.

The key to the A1200, aside from its very reasonable cost as an entry level camera or as a last-minute pickup before a trip because you want to leave your good cameras home, is that it is one of a very few cameras that still offers two ways of viewing an image. You can use the rear 2.7-inch high-resolution LCD framing display or you can use a real viewfinder.

Truthfully, one will find the viewfinder is probably the best way to go in most situations since you just slap the camera up to your eye and depress the set button so that the camera is ready to go with the proper speed and metering choices and once you’ve framed your shot in the viewfinder you finish the click.

It’s a very nice way of handling things and one that appears in fewer and fewer digital cameras, unless you are using a digital single lens reflex (dSLR). Today, most cameras force you to use the large LCD’s at the rear of the camera to frame your photo and this can cause all kinds of problems if the lighting is poor or contrary on the LCD surface as you try to set things up.

Further, it means that you are building in camera wag and shake if you use the 4X exposure to handle long lens style shooting.

The good thing about the A1200 is that most of the thinking is done for you as it offers up to 32 predefined situations that include: Smart Auto mode where the camera does the thinking for you and all you do is worry about the shot; Live view control that enables you to reset or set color combinations; Fisheye mode that introduces a rounded effect, even though the 28 mm lens doesn’t offer a real fisheye.

Although the Powershot is only a 12.1 MP camera, there is still enough overhead for effective photo editing and cropping as most desktops don’t use the high definition modes of 20 or 30 MP very effectively. The limit on high-definition video or imagery is still a maximum of 1080 p and most cameras settle for 720 p, which the Canon offers.

The PowerShot is an effective low-end point-and-shoot which some nice features such as the ability to use AA batteries and a separate viewfinder, as well as a very nice small size. It’s a very effective camera.

While reading a brief note in one of the tech briefings today, it was announced that Apple was trying to squeeze its iPad into the iPad mini and after looking at and using Samsung’s Galaxy NT-7000 Unlocked Quad Band smartphone, we can easily see why.

First we’ll give you a look at the basics you’ll find with the Samsung and the first is a dual core 1.4 GHz processor whose Android 2.3.0 (Gingerbread version) software gives you access to somewhere around 200,000 apps that do not lock you into a proprietary operating system such as Apple has done with its 300,000 or so apps and the latest version of its iPad.

In this case, though, you will find that the competition that Apple rightly fears comes from Samsung which is clearly aiming at the market leader by delivering a high-resolution device (the superAMOLED 1280 by 800 resolution display) that easily delivers bright colors and good contrast so that you can not only use the NT-7000 as a tablet, but you can also take advantage of its dual-camera capability — an 8 MP rearward facing autofocus camera and 2 MP forward-facing camera that allows you to use your NT-7000 for real videoconferencing where you see more than just little outlines and squiggles. You can actually see a Project slide easily and interact with other folks in your group.

Not only that, you have the ability to either use a standard texting keyboard, if you want to go that way or, if you prefer, you can use the display and a stylus that will not only allow you to circle areas of your screen and have them show up on the other end, but you can use it to tap out your messages, which does prevent the aching thumbs that come with too much texting.

Plus, the superAMOLED touchscreen does allow you to expand and contract thumbnails and other images so you can either show your friends the photos you have received or you can let others involved in your project see exactly what you want.

The NT-7000 is an unlocked multi-band device that allows you to work with the ISP of your choice. For example, if you are content using the 800, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz band favored by GSM-serving ISPs then you can use this device which offers all of the WiFi standards a/b/g/n. This means that you can not only have high-speed WiFi because the n standard allows the pairing of upstream and downstream channels, but you can also use the other bands offered by the ISPs offering HSPDA/EDGE 850, 1900 and 2100 MHz so you have another way of obtaining your data.

Best of all, the voice reception is clear and with the right app, you can even set up your phone for any of the online music services as the Android operating systems seems to be daily offering more and more streaming video and audio capability.

Apple had better be watching over its shoulder closely when folks like Samsung offer devices that are not only tablets, but also smartphones and superfast cameras in a package that is about 6 inches by 7 inches by 0.38 inches and that weight only 6 ounces because this is the heart of Apple’s market.

And, best of all, this allows you the ability to run at native 1080p high definition video native mode so that with the right adapter cable this can be part of the heart of your home/business entertainment system.

It can easily shoot videos as it offers 16 GB of built in video and you can add another 32 GB with an SDHC card. This gives you the ability to shoot at least eight or more hours or video, if you would like and you can then share it which is great if you are at a conference where the information you are receiving is important not only to you but your whole company.

The Sony BDP-S590 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi is a device that combines not only your basic 2D/3D blu-ray disc player into one device, but it is also WiFi-compatible with Standards 802.11 a/b/g/n. In other words, if you have any sort of high-definition video or audio device connected to your home network, the S590′s built-in WiFi connectivity will “announce itself” to your router and once they have finished their security negotiation (all WiFi devices must have as a minimum WPA/WPA2 or WEP encrypted security with regularly changed keys), everything is all set.

For example, Sony, this time around has decided not only must it admit that Apple products do exist (and vice versa), but it has also allowed Android-active devices to connect to your network through the S590. There’s a control app not only for iPods but also for iPhones and Android devices.

This means that not only can you simulcast, if you will allow an older phrase, your 2D and 3D movies and discs through your S590, if you have an iPhone with the Pandora app, you can stream Pandora audio through any portion or portions of your home system.

The key to this piece is Sony’s Multi-Room music sound streaming mode. It’s nice to be able to use your system-connected speakers in the basement with sound that is being streamed through your home system in the living room. It does make and keep things interesting at parties.

And, if you just want to use the standard blu-ray disc player of the S590 to send 1920 by 1080 (full high-definition) video to any part of your network, all you have do to is start the device you are playing and ensure that the S590 understands it. It will understand it since Sony was one of the original signers of the DLNA certification agreement. The DLNA certification means that any Digital Live Network Addressed device will automatically be recognized by any other DLNA device so there is no negotiation. Just wait until they sync up and you’re ready to go so that you can and will literally throw any sounds from a Sony (or Apple, to be fair) device through your home network to any other part.

If you have a PC connected somewhere in there you have even more expansion capability because the S590 comes with only two USB ports, however, if you have a PC included in your home entertainment system (or even a Playstation III, for that matter) you will pick up at least two or more USB ports through which you can connect either HDMI (high-def) cables or other devices, such as another HDTV receiver so you can share not only your video, but the audio capability of the S590.

Think about this. Yes, it will be expensive (more than likely because it is Sony and it’s a new device) but when you have installed it you can safely take out other spare sound devices that you may have wanted to replace or you can add something like a Playstation III to the mix, if you have just received one, and you can use it anywhere on your home network.

It is quite an advance and shows just how far device integration has come. Pretty soon, all you’ll have to do is unpack the box, drop the player into the middle of the console, add a couple of adapter wires (the speakers may or may not be built in) and you have a complete system. Yes, it has taken time to figure out how to do it, but they have done it so that now if you are into Twitting from your iPhone or even iPad, you can keep in contact with your social networking, including YouTube video clips through one device and you can stream them where you’d like.

Perhaps the nicest piece of this is the fact that if you just want to watch a 3D move on your HDTV in the game room while the rest of the system does other things the S590′s flexibility will oblige you, even allowing you to convert 2D to 3D video. It is quite an achievement but if you had to look for where it would originate you would have to expect Sony to do it and quite nicely in a device you can tuck anywhere as it’s only 2.9 by 19 by 11 and it only weighs about 4.4 pounds. There’s quite a lot of power packed into that nice-looking package as we have found out.

When Sony introduced its HDR-TD10 to the photography world most people were startled to find that instead of having one lens at the front of the standard Sony-style handycam, there were two lenses, roughly 31 mm apart.

Why, many people wondered at the time, would Sony take its most popular consumer handycam and add what looked – at the time – like a vestigial (something that is on a device with nothing to do) lens and then turn it loose on an unsuspecting public saying that they could take 3D videos with the handycam that didn’t require special glasses to view? Also, the video did not require and special preparation. It was shot in native high-definition mode (1920 by 1080). The HDR-TD10 can shoot stills at 7.1MP (pretty good for a video handycam) and it will deliver high-quality video in 2D mode with the flip of a button.

In other words, Sony has done everything right with this handycam.

It’s interesting to note the number of doubters out there who still believe you cannot shoot 3D video and without needing special glasses (whether active or passive), but the HDR-TD1 can do it. We don’t know if they still sell the old “Viewmaster” toy – it is, after all a non-video, non-electronic device that requires specialized wheels – however, if you find one at a yard sale of flea market and the price is right (a dollar or two) – buy it and then take a look at exactly why the HDR-TD10 works.

Normal binocular vision – the kind that humans and cats have – puts the eyes at lightly different positions on your head and each one sees a slightly different angle of the same image. That gives us natural 3D vision that we don’t think anything about. It just works.

Now, take the HDR-TD10 and put two 10X zoom lenses about 31mm apart and guess what? You have the “Viewmaster” concept all over again. Because each lens sees the image from a slightly different angle, you can have instant 3D right in your hands. If you want 2D imagery with TruBlack technology (one of Sony’s patented features that enhanced contrast and gives you great color contrast and brilliant colors, at the same time), you can have it by pushing the 2D button, but we’re willing to bet that you keep the HDR-TD10 and its 28mm lens (effectively 280 on zoom) in 3D so that you can have natural views of the world around you.

The HDR-TD10 also proves that the naysayers are wrong, you can have 3D systems that work particularly well in handheld mode. Part of the secret, aside from the great optics, is the EXMor R image processor. Each lens – that’s right each lens – has its own processor and will process the video it is seeing independently of the other lens, much like the way your eyes work.

Sony has done a great job with this handycam and the surprising thing is that, unless you know that it is a 3D handycam, you think it is just another Sony handycam device, however, when you look at the front end and see two lenses staring back at you, you know that you have something different on your hands that works very well. So, who needs special 3D glasses if you have the HDR-TD10? You won’t and we won’t certainly and we have no problem with that.

When Sony went out to offer its NE X line of products the electronics giants wanted to show you didn’t have to be a pro to shoot photos like one; you didn’t need a Digital SLR to get the same types of image and if you preferred to “roll your own,” using a manual mode, you could do that too as the NE X-5N shows.

It’s not as if Sony didn’t do its homework before they decided to bring out the 16.1MP NE X-5N because they certainly did. They took a close look at the Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras being offered and figured that most people really needed a good, adjustable framing LCD rather than a heavy mirror and pentaprism to go with the improved processor they put inside, already, so they did away with all of the heavy stuff.

Oh, they did leave the new BOINZ Processing engine which is about three-inches across and they made it work with their improved 16.1MP Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor so that even a person who has never taken a picture in his life can, once he is shown which button to press, take professional quality images. And, if he wants to shoot videos, you only have to show him which red button to push and the NE X-5N does all the work.

Everything this camera does is automated. For example, it offers not only full high-definition imagery and will shoot at a nice smooth 60p rate or a slower, more cinematic 24p rate (fps), but they have put all of this into one of the smallest mid-ranged camera bodies around that allows one to change lenses.

That’s right, the new Sony will handle the full range of Sony’s interchangeable lenses including the 4/3 interchange and zoom that is a new feature on this camera plus it will allow you to snap the standard 18mm to 55mm zoom into place. It will then take fully digital imagery at 1920 by 1080 native mode. This is great, especially if you are shooting videography as you can share it directly with your HDTV through the standard HDMI interface. Indeed, that interface, when used with a Sony system, allows you full control over the camera.

For the non-professionals, the AVCHD-compatible NE X-5N offers you 11 photo effect modes that include posturization (black and white and color), pop color features, realistic effects and more, as well as the PASM capability. That stands for Fully Programmable Aperture, Programmable Shutter or Manual Shutter model (PASM).

If you want to let the camera do the work, just leave it in automatic and it will handle everything for you including facial recognition (up to eight people), as well as helping to provide softer skin tone.

One thing that you will quickly learn is that you can mix and match modes with a series of levers and buttons on the rear, however, if you’re like most people, you just want to set it and forget it (we’re like that many times, unless we’re looking for a specific shot). When you realize the interchangeability factor and combine it with the fact that it uses the same processor that the Sony DLSR actually uses, you’ll see that this is the “SLR” for the photographer who wants to relax.

There is a strobe mode available, although the range of the BIONZ image engine is F/100 to F/25600 (ISO100 to ISO25600), so you can take some shots in some pretty dark areas. This same technology handles tough backlighting and foreground issues as well.

If you are looking for a fine camera that does everything your dSLR does but at about half the weight and a lot less size then the NE X-5N is what should be in your shoulder bag.

A longtime warrior in the battle of the digital camera, Olympus has learned what it takes to enhance its products so that they work for the photographer no matter what the conditions, for example, if light is changing the automatic mode of the PEN E-PL1 12.3 Live MOS Micro 4.3 Interchangeable lens model makes this a point-and-click zoom camera that let’s you shoot like a pro.

Maybe it is because Olympus has been in the digital camera wars for so long, the company has learned what photographers want and the PEN E-PL1 certainly exhibits that. Here’s one feature that you will probably like, let’s say you are framing a still in the 2.7-inch LCD in the rear when you see the kids that you had taken the time to line up so neatly found a football and were having a great time with it. Would you demand that they stop their game and their fun or would you go with it? We chose fun and pushed the shutter and the “red button” on the back and not only had a camera that kept the kids in focus, but when recorded the fun on their faces as they played their impromptu game of football.

The PEN E-PL1 is for the photographer who really doesn’t want to get so involved in the hobby that all he or she is thinking is about F-stops (ISO levels) or zooming in. Instead, with the number of automatic modes built into the wide-ranging software in the PEN E-PL1, all you have to do is literally frame your picture and squeeze (never jerk) the shutter and you have a truly fine picture.

How can Olympus get away with this? Well, imagine you had the E3 or E620 Digital Single Lens Reflex and imaging that you took your mini-screwdriver and opened them up, what to you think you would find? Quite simply, you would find a Processor that is huge. You would expect something like this in a dSLR, however, in a point-and-shoot like the PEN E-PL1, you would find a Olympus’ Tru Pic V Processor that is fully 8 times the size of any comparable point-and-shoot camera.

Having this type of firepower under your fingertip not only means that you do not have to be involved in the ultimate choices, although you might want to be, then there are slides on the back that allow you to range through the 19 modes available in the automatic settings. It also means that instead of putting an autostabliizer feature on the lens as many heavier dSLR systems do to keep their systems in focus with no blur at long zooms and with tricky light, the processor takes care of that for you.

Of course, the processor does give you a great deal of range. From F-100 to F3200 (IS0 100 t0 3200 for low-light situations), the processor will handle the work. And, if a flash is needed, a true flash pops up from the back (not one of those little strobes) that can work with other Olympus strobes wirelessly to take multi-strobe shots.

There’s just so much built into this camera it’s hard to know what to put in next. For example, you have the 19 automatic scene modes like Sunset and other modes, and if you don’t like what you see, you can simply push the iA (instant Automatic) button which overrides the automated selections and reworks them for a better shot).

Of course, you have up to 8 face-recognition so that if you are concentrating on specific people in a crowd and they leave and comeback into the frame the PEN E-P1 the software automatically recognizes them and brings them back into focus.

The Olympus has so many modes, here are just of the few others we liked: Skin Tone Enhancement so that skin is smoothed; 19 Modes – Portrait to Sunset, Fireworks, Sunset, Kids, Macro Panorama; Panorama where the camera will automatically take three shots of a larger view and seamlessly paste them into one or if you hit the ib button you can have up to 10; Shooting Tips that works with the autofocus for best picture results; Interchangeable lenses, on a 4/3 format at 12.3 MP and the other a 14mm to 42 mm zoom from F/3.5-5.6; A built-in 3X optical zoom, as well; Autocontrol with the HDMI cable from your HDTV remote.

Not knowing whether they would have a major impact or not, about six years ago Sony and Panasonic, together and developed the AVCHD, the Advanced Video Coding High Definition standard, and the rest, as they say, is history as it has become the de facto standard that all camcorder manufacturers use.

If you are a professional news photographer or a professional videographer then you are likely very familiar with Sony’s NXCAM series of professional camcorders. The first NXCAM camcorder was such as Sony’s HXR-NX5U NXCAM Digital HD Video Camcorder. It was the first in Sony’s new generation of tapeless memory handycams, relying fully on flash memory.

Videographers used the NXCAM standard, which featured a hybrid mix of HD and SD memory slots, to record their high-definition video. The standard for the high-def video was set by the AVCHD and its primary feature was that the native mode for high definition video was resolution of 1920 by 1080, of 800 lines of vertical and 900 lines of horizontal video. This works out to the same resolution.

To put this another way, if you have ever watched a high-definition video or television show on an older 560 scan set, you probably notice there is a very large black area around the video. On a standard, non high-definition television (HDTV) set, this is quite natural as the maximum number of scan lines it can do is about 560 by about 600 so you do see all of the video, but it is compressed to the center of the screen. That you can see it at all is thanks to another feature of HDTV a 16:9 aspect ratio that your television (older TV set) can handle, but it does do some interesting things to it, such as scrunching it into the smaller space.

With NXCAM camcorders, such as Sony’s HXR-NX5U and an HDTV, you are not only able to pick up the 16:9 video ratio, but also the higher resolution video so that you have a full-screen picture that is fine in its clarity and the crispness of its color.

The HXR-NX5U is most a professional camcorder, although you can have one, too, if you want to make that kind of investment. More importantly, though, this camcorder was the first to make use of dual memory slot technology on which to store its high-definition video. This meant that with the right memory cards you could have some long recording and playback times. (Today’s SDXC high-density memory card makes it possible to have as much as 64 GB of flash memory to play with and in dual-slot machines you can have up to 128 GB.) The problem with here is we are discussing an older camcorder so only older orders of time apply. In this case, the NX5U delivers about two-and-a-half hours of video time to its hybrid memory technology.

Still, though, the key is that this is the first truly all-digital, video camcorder and it is still a professional standard, making use of the AVCHD and three, yes, three Exmor R Sony video processing engines.

This means that you can shoot excellent video at effective focal lengths of nearly 4.1 to 82 mm in standard mode, however, when you are shooting at 30 fps, your camcorder’s focal length is 29.5 mm to 590mm and at 24 fps its about 30 mm to 800 mm. The NX5U allows you to shoot at a wide mix of focal lengths and speeds due to the number of processing engines available.

The NX5U was a trailblazer in the professional camcorder world and it is still so solid it is still being sold and used by Sony. The contributions it has made to the industry, though, are immeasurable.

Hewlett-Packard office/workgroup printers have a virtual lock on the office market when you take a close look at the HP LaserJet P2055dn and, although it is still a black-and-white laser printer, its output volume is huge and it handles duplex printing right out of the box.

That Hewlett-Packard virtually owns the office/workgroup market for printers is easy to see when you look at the reasonably priced, high-speed LaserJet P2055dn. About what this printer lacks is color and all that would do, in this instance, is slow it down and increase its cost.

That the P2055dn is really an office/workgroup printer is apparent because the basic unit includes the ability in interface with a high-speed Gigabit network, through its networking interface. This is virtually a necessity today as even small businesses move away from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps as their standard networking speed. This means that all the device hooked to the network have to be capable of working at that speed and the P2055dn is certainly able to do that.

Since this was actually released before the start of the WiFi revolution in the workplace, there is little wonder that this HP is not set up for high-speed network-oriented printing, other than through a more standard interface. But, let’s face it even if it recognized all of the key standard a/b/g/n the top speed for this printer would still be a little over 100 Mbps, so the wireless interfacing will likely have to wait.

However, once you locate this 14.4 by 14.5 by 10.6-inch, 23-pound printer in your office there is little chance that you will be moving it around too much as it is not exactly a lightweight. That it is a heavyweight ready to take on any job you can throw at it comes from some interesting specifications.

First, the standard input paper page is half-a-ream or 250 pages of paper. That’s a lot of paper to move around an office and means that it is likely you will keep your boxes of paper quite nearby. Why would the boxes be nearby? Well, because of the next feature, second, this printer is made to handle up to 50,000 copies (you read that right, 50,000 copies), something a lightweight injket or small workgroup printer just can’t handle. If you get up around 20,000-pages you might be chancing the failure of the fusing wire, one of the keys to this device.

Plus, this printer comes with a 128 MB queue built in and it can also have its on-board memory expanded so that it is likely you won’t need a new printer very quickly.

And, finally, two pieces of information that should sell the manager looking for a new printer to take over 64-bit operations, the first is standard duplex printing so you can take advantage of duplex right out of the box and save money and second there’s a special 50-page special mode paper drawer that slides underneath the 250-page master drawer that will allow you to print on any colored stock from 3.5 by 5 to 8.5 by 14.

Oh, and if you are worried about this printer ultimately becoming part of your network, this printer can be set up as a single-PC printer through a USB cable, however, it’s interesting that it would take less than 5 minutes to turn it into a high-speed networked printer with its own printerserver, a PC or a Mac.
