On January 30, 2012, Nazir Al-Mujaahid entered the Aldi’s grocery story to get some items for dinner. While inside, he faced the barrel of a sawed off shot gun in an armed robbery. Protecting himself, his wife and other customers led to events that ended the robbery and have drawn attention to why Concealed Carry is so important in our society.

Nazir wasn’t looking for the spot light, but has chosen to use his experiences to Advocate Concealed Carry to others who want to protect themselves and their family criminals like the ones who robbed Aldi’s.

009 Concealed Wisconsin Would a Firearm have saved the South Carolina women kidnapped, raped, and beaten to death?

Welcome to Concealed Wisconsin! A podcast about Guns, Wisconsin, and YOU! In today’s show, I’ll evaluate the scenario surrounding Hope Melton, a 30 year old woman, stopped at a convenience store in the town of Jefferson, unaware that a violent man was watching her.

That man, 23 year old Nickolas Jermaine Miller, was seen in surveillance video in he convenience store harassing the Melton and then following her car as she left the parking lot. She was abducted, raped, and beaten to death.

Miller, the man charged with abducting, raping and killing Melton was seen on surveillance video opening the store’s door for Melton, purchasing a beer and sitting in his car in waiting for her to leave.

When Melton finished pumping her gas, she left and Miller followed in his SUV. Melton turned on to Angelus Road, heading to her grandmother’s house when she likely noticed that she was being followed.

This begs the question, “what if she had a gun?” What if Hope Melton was a licensed concealed carry gun owner who choose to arm herself that day? Would she still be alive today to tell the story? I say yes! And this should be a wake up call for women to choose ‘not to be a victim.’

By evaluating this story, I mean no disrespect to Hope Melton’s family, but I do want consider the scenario under different conditions.

It is safe to say that people who choose to carry a weapon for self defense tend to be more alert to suspicious people, uncomfortable circumstances, and potential crimes. In fact, they tend to carry themselves differently.

They can be less attractive as a target, because they are “too alert” and there are easier targets out there.

However, being alert doesn’t mean criminals won’t target you; some criminals, like Nickolas Jermaine Miller were willing to go to extremes to accomplish his plans and being alert would not have enough to deter him.

So, let’s re-evaluate the scenario, but this time we’ll give Hope Melton a gun.

Welcome to Concealed Wisconsin! In today’s show I’m going to vent a little, because I still haven’t gotten my Concealed Weapons License in the mail yet and I sent the application in on November 1st! Next, there are a couple things in the news that I’d like to cover and bring to your attention, then I’ll close the programs with some thoughts from this month’s NRA Magazine “America’s First Freedoms.”

Where is my License? I still haven’t received my Concealed Carry License yet from the Department of Justice. Now honestly, I didn’t expect it to come until December anyways, but since so many people have been talking about it online and sharing their “mail-in date” and license numbers, I’m starting to get jealous!

Update on the Castle Doctrine
As of November 3rd, 2011 – the Senate passed an amended version of the Castle Doctrine bill. This means that the bill goes back to the Assembly for debate. If it is passed as is, it will be delivered to the Governor for his signature. This bill brings protection to Wisconsin citizens who defend themselves against attacks in their own homes, cars and businesses.

Updates on Concealed Carry License
As of November 2nd, several people reported getting their license in the mail already. These individuals were some of the first inline to hand deliver their applications to the Department of Justice.

For those of us that mailed them into the Department of Justice, our applications were mixed in with the tens of thousands of applications that poured into through the mail from all over Wisconsin. We will likely see our licenses in the coming weeks as they begin to work through the mail.

JB Van Hollen secured Concealed Carry License #1, but many thought that honor should have gone to someone more deserving, based on actually working hard to successfully bringing Concealed Carry forward.

Suggested names include Sen. Pam Galloway – the author of the Concealed Carry legislation, Nik Clark of Wisconsin Carry Inc., or Annette Olsen of Un-Infringed Liberty.

Andy of the Concealed Wisconsin Podcast traveled down to beautiful Hudson, WI to listen to speakers, mingle with fellow 2nd Amendment supporters, and enjoy a couple of hours of openly carrying a firearm just because it is my constitutional right to do so.

In just 10 days, we will officially become the 49th State in the Union to allow Law Abiding Citizens to protect themselves, their families, and others with a concealed weapon. Although this law isn’t perfect, it is said to be one of the better ones in the country. We have a lot to be proud of in Wisconsin and a lot to protect.

As you listen to the interviews, you’ll hear some talk about guns, others the constitution, and others politics. In reality, they all go together pretty naturally. November 2012 is approaching quickly and now more than ever we have to be working hard to protect our rights and those who have fought so hard to pass them for us.

We’re working hard on new content, now that the law is close to becoming active. We’ll be following the DOJ’s releases of information and passing the important stuff on to you.

Since the Wisconsin Senate passed SB-93 on June 14, 2011, there have been questions and answers floating around the internet regarding the contents of the now signed law called Act 35.

002 Concealed Wisconsin – Governor Signs Concealed Carry into Law!

On Friday, July 8, 2011, the Governor of the State of Wisconsin signed the Wisconsin Personal Protection Act, or Concealed Carry, into law. The law will not take effect until November 1, 2011 after the permitting process is activated.

Before Law Abiding citizens can carry concealed in Wisconsin, the need to apply for the permit, get a background check, and obtain mandatory training or have existing training. This doesn’t effect Open Carry, which is legal in Wisconsin now.

With much fan fair, the Governor came out like a hero for Gun Rights Activists, but many ‘constitutionally minded gun owners feel like the Governor may have tossed them under the bus. After initially stating he’d support Constitutional Carry if it got to his desk, he virtually assured it wouldn’t make it that far or even get a vote when he came out against it during an interview with the media.

Regardless of how you feel, there are a lot of law abiding citizens who are happy to finally have a signed law allowing them to protect themselves, their families, and others with something other than a call to 911. It’s been said, “when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.” This law allows law abiding citizens to carry firearms legally – either concealed or openly; as well as other non-lethal weapons too.

As law abiding citizens, we appreciate our law enforcement officers and think that they do a great job, but we realize that they can not be everywhere at all times. With a concealed carry law in Wisconsin, we have another option to protect ourselves from criminals.

With a heavy hint of sarcasm, the liberal lady asked me, “Why do you carry a gun?” Without a pause or a blink I said, “Because a cop is too heavy.” and walked away.

In talking with a number of Constitutional 2nd Amendment activists, they don’t believe Constitutional Carry is a moot issue. They intend to continue to press for it and like other states, get rid of the permit requirements in the future.
