Tagging items is a great option to organize your content. The same goes for the files and folders in your system as well.

We have another good news for you. RecentX now supports tagging of files and folders directly from Windows File Explorer.

Most of us don’t tag our files and folders in Windows since either we don’t know how to or it is a complicated procedure for us.

This is not the case with RecentX. Tagging anything, be it files, folders, programs, website history, or clipboard history, is smooth.

Read this blog post for more clarity:

https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/index.php/tag-files-folders-programs-websites-etc-in-windows-using-recentx/

This post will provide you more details into this.

What is RecentX?

RecentX is a smart launcher for Windows designed to make your computing life joyful. Here are some of the many cool things you can do with RecentX:

Effortlessly access any file, folder or program on Windows in less than 5 seconds!

Assign tags to frequently used files/folders. Makes things even faster.

Integrates with Windows File open/save window so that you don’t have to navigate any folder when opening or saving a document.

It has a clipboard manager too that remembers all the text & pictures copied to a clipboard so that you can quickly pick & paste them again.

Tagging Files & Folders

Tags or labels are one of the most used features of RecentX because you can easily group items based on projects, topics, etc.

Here’s a short video depicting this feature:

These are the steps to tag files and folders directly from Windows file explorer, using RecentX:

Go to Windows File Explorer.

Right-click on the file(s) you wish to tag and choose the ‘Tag files/folders’ option.

3. The RecentX Tags window will open where you can assign tags.

4. Click on ‘OK’ and the tag will be assigned immediately.

5. You can go to RecentX and click on the tags to find your files there.

Tagging folders is also done in the same way as files.

An easier way to tag files and folders is to drag and drop it from within RecentX over the tag button to assign that tag. You can also drag and drop from Windows File Explorer over the tag button to assign that tag.

Why RecentX?

You now have seen how easy it is to assign tags using RecentX. Unlike Windows, the procedure is much simpler.

Another limitation that Windows has is that it only permits tagging of images, videos, and documents. You might not see the tagging option even on supported file types on rare occasions, depending on the file format.

Also, if you use a different file system, or transfer or shift your files to other computers or external hard drives and thumb drives, then the tags do not stay. Tagging of folders is also not supported in Windows.

All these factors make RecentX a good alternative to Windows File Explorer when you want to tag files and folders.

Another cool thing about RecentX is that it allows searching by multiple tags also. Hold the Ctrl key and select the second tag button from the toolbar in RecentX. You will see the second tag being added automatically.

Download RecentX for free, from here.

We love using apps in dark mode. Apps like Twitter, Instagram and even YouTube have rolled out dark modes.

I think we all can agree that there is something really soothing and visually appealing about the dark mode. It also gives relief to our eyes that might get strained looking at the bright light of our PC and mobile screens. Another good thing is that dark mode reduces battery usage of devices and therefore ensures longer battery life.

Joining this trend is RecentX. After requests from users, we have finally introduced a dark mode option in RecentX.

What is RecentX?

How to activate dark mode?

Open the RecentX Window and go to the ‘Advanced’ tab on the top.

Select the ‘Preferences’ option and you will find the setting there.

We have hundreds of folders in our systems. And it gets really hectic to look for specific files lost somewhere in the lot.

Tagging folders is therefore what i would suggest. Just like how you tag files, tagging folders will help you stay organized and makes things more accessible.

In our previous post, we gave steps on how to tag files directly from Windows File explorer, using RecentX, and why it is better than Windows.

Windows offers the ability to tag files. But it only permits tagging of images, videos, and documents. You cannot tag any other type of file in Windows. Plus Windows doesn’t let you tag a folder.

This post will show you how you can tag folders in Windows using the Windows File Explorer and an alternative software, RecentX. RecentX lets you tag any file or folder. This is the most important difference between RecentX and Windows tagging system.

This post will tell you how to tag folders directly from File Explorer using RecentX. You will be able tag even files in the same way.

Tagging folders using Windows File Explorer

Sadly, Windows does not have a direct way to tag folders. You have to use third party apps to do that.

But don’t worry. RecentX has you covered.

Tagging folders from Windows File Explorer using RecentX

Here’s a short video about this feature:

Here are the steps to follow:

Go to Windows File Explorer.

Right-click on the folder(s) you wish to tag and choose the ‘Tag files/folders’ option.

3. The RecentX Tags window will open where you can assign tags.

Click on ‘OK’ and the tag will be assigned immediately.

5. You can go to RecentX and click on the tags to find your files there.

We also have an easier way to tag whereby you can drag and drop the folders from within RecentX over the tag button or drag and drop from Windows File Explorer over the tag button to assign that tag.

Conclusion

Tagging things with RecentX is fast and easy. All your items can be accessed quickly.

You can do a lot more with RecentX. It has amazing features you should definitely try.

Another cool thing about RecentX is that it allows searching by multiple tags also. Hold the Ctrl key and select the second tag button from the toolbar in RecentX. You will see the second tag being added automatically.

Download RecentX for free, from here.

Tags or labels are very important when working with files. They help you stay organized and increase productivity by saving your time and effort on looking for things.

We know that Windows offers the ability to tag files. But it only permits tagging of images, videos, and documents. You cannot tag any file in Windows. Plus Windows doesn’t let you tag a folder.

This post will show you how you can tag files in Windows using the Windows File Explorer and an alternative software, RecentX. RecentX lets you tag any file or folder. This is the most important difference.

Tagging files using Windows File Explorer

Windows has two methods to tag files. One is from the Properties Windows and the other from the Details Pane.

Since tagging from the Details Pane is a bit easier than the former, we will see the steps for this.

Open the File Explorer using the keyboard shortcut ‘Windows+E’.

In the File Explorer click on the “View” tab and select the “Details Pane” option from the navigation pane. The Details pane will appear on the right side of the File Explorer.

3. To tag a file, select the file from the main window and then add tags in the Tags field appearing in the Details panel. Click on Save.

That’s it.

Tagging files from Windows File Explorer using RecentX

Before we look at the steps, here’s a short video depicting the steps:

Let us look at the steps to do this using RecentX:

Go to Windows File Explorer.

Right-click on the file(s) you wish to tag and choose the ‘Tag files/folders’ option.

3. The RecentX Tags window will open where you can assign tags.

4. Click on ‘OK’ and the tag will be assigned immediately.

5. You can go to RecentX and click on the tags to find your files there.

We also have an easier way to tag whereby you can drag and drop the files from within RecentX over the tag button or drag and drop from Windows File Explorer over the tag button to assign that tag.

Our Verdict

Both Windows and RecentX have minimal steps to tag files.

However, there’s a twist here. Windows has a limitation so it only permits tagging of images, videos, and documents. You might not see the tagging option even on supported file types on rare occasions, depending on the file format.

Also, if you use a different file system, or transfer or shift your files to other computers or external hard drives and thumb drives, then the tags are removed.

Thereby, we would definitely go with something reliable like RecentX.

Another cool thing about RecentX is that it allows searching by multiple tags also. Hold the Ctrl key and select the second tag button from the toolbar in RecentX. You will see the second tag being added automatically.

Thanks for your time :)

We often forget to appreciate the good things we have once we get used to them. That’s when someone reminds you of them, and you realize how special they are.

This post is a reminder of the awesome and unique features of RecentX.

<img decoding="async" width="218" height="266" src="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/RecentX.png" alt=""title="RecentX" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4266" />

Let us look at some of the unique features of RecentX

Tag files and folders in Windows: None or rarely any file launching program would provide this feature. But RecentX lets you tag any file or folder in Windows. These tags let you categorize files, folders, apps & websites based on categories, file types, projects, etc. This feature comes very handy if you often find yourself opening the same set of folders each day for a particular project.

Say, you have a file, “Orders”, which you update every day. You don’t have to go to the file location repeatedly to access it. Tag the file as anything you want. Ex: docs, important, or just anything of your choice. So the next time you want to open it, type the tag in the RecentX search window, and a list of all files with the mentioned tag will appear. Only a single click, and your file will open instantly.

In addition to these regular tags, we even have smart tags. Smart Tags in RecentX let you save keywords that you frequently use to search your files. Ex: “.pdf” for your PDF files.

It, therefore, helps you avoid multiple folder navigation.

This short video will give you more clarity:

Learn more about tags from here.

Index files, folders, programs, and website history: You would have heard of indexing files and folders. RecentX, by default, also indexes Internet bookmarks and history along with files, folders and, programs from all your local drives. You can add or remove any other drive from a remote location too. Now quickly search and effortlessly launch any file or folder.

What is unique about RecentX is that it indexes programs (.exe) from your complete hard drive. This means you can find and launch any application (.exe) such as portable apps and utilities that don’t even have shortcuts inside the Windows start menu.

Search and access website history & bookmarks of all major browsers: Normally we don’t remember the particular website we browsed to find specific content. RecentX serves as a log that you can access to check which websites you browsed so that you can re-visit them quickly. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since you accessed the site. You can find it even after 1 month or 3 months or 6 months using RecentX.

RecentX lets you access website history & bookmarks from major browsers- Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi Browser, and Internet Explorer on Windows.

Tip: To find and launch a website faster, you can even create and use tags.

This short video will give you more clarity on this:

Open a website in any browser: Since RecentX shows websites & bookmarks from all major browsers, you can also open them in any browser of your choice – Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Vivaldi browser. The “Open With” option lets you open any web page in any installed browser.

Useful for testing the same website in multiple Internet browsers. It comes handy when some sites work only in a particular Internet browser.

Quickly attach files to email: With RecentX, you can attach any file to email within few seconds. The file may be anywhere on your hard drive. Just drag and drop the file from RecentX on to your email client window such as Gmail, Outlook, etc.

You can, therefore, compose emails with standard replies or those which you regularly send, like daily.

Here’s a short video to understand this better:

Select a file faster in the file open/save window: The file open/save dialog window that is shown by all Windows applications is very tedious to use. RecentX makes it very easy to select any file in this window. When the ‘File open/save’ window opens, find & select the file using RecentX. The file name will be automatically displayed in the File Open/Save window, after which you just need to click on “Open.” That’s it.

Other handy features of RecentX

RecentX does many other small yet very helpful things for you.

Quick access using the sidebar: RecentX file launcher can be easily accessed using a convenient desktop sidebar. You don’t have to search for it when you want to search for anything on your system urgently. With a single click, you can go to any category (Files, Folders, Programs, or Websites). RecentX Launcher can also be accessed using hotkeys.

Finds in recent items first: Most often we open the same files & folders again and again. For this very reason, RecentX Launcher, instead of listing down all the files and folders on your system, lists down just the recently accessed files and folders. This saves a lot of time compared to searching the complete hard drive. This makes launching easier now that important items are shown before other trivial items.

Note: Alternatively, you can even search in all items instead of the recent ones.

Conveniently access clipboard history: RecentX remembers all the text & images that you copy to the clipboard. It keeps track of items as old as 6 months to a year and as new as something copied an hour back or a day back. Just pick them directly from RecentX when needed, instead of copy-pasting the same things repeatedly. This is simple and a real time saver. What more? You can even tag the clipboard history items to access them faster the next time.

Watch this short video to find out what more you can do with the Clipboard History Manager:

RecentX window always on top: You can also enable your RecentX window to always stay on top of your desktop when using it. Just click on the “Stay on Top icon” located next to the Advanced Tab.

Wow. This was a really long list. You would be surprised to know that there is more.

We all like speed. But it gets annoying when simple tasks like searching for a file or folder on our system take a lot of time and effort out of our important tasks.

This article will tell you how to search for files and folders faster in Windows using RecentX and how it can be used as an alternative to Everything by Voidtools.

Searching using RecentX compared to Everything (Voidtools)

Searching for files: RecentX separates items on the basis of Files, Folders, Programs, Websites and clipboard. This way, the items are not mixed up with each other. This also narrows down the result list since you no longer have to search among unrelated items for the item you want.

Everything, on the other hand, does not separate files and folders and lists down every object in your system initially. There is a filter to only show objects of a particular type, which you can choose to separate these items.

<img decoding="async" width="1106" height="760" style="border:1px solid" src="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything.png" alt=""title="Everything" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4362" srcset="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything.png 1106w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything-300x206.png 300w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything-768x528.png 768w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything-1024x704.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1106px) 100vw, 1106px" />

Searching for folders:
Watch a short video on this feature of RecentX:

RecentX helps you avoid full folder structure navigation to access subfolders. As mentioned earlier, it separates files and folders. So now, when you want to search for a particular folder, go to the “Folders” Tab of RecentX and type in your search keyword in the text box given below. It will find an item in less than 3 seconds, no matter how deep they are located in your system. Double-click on the desired folder to open it immediately.

Everything has a folder filter. Using this filter, every folder on your system is listed down, and you then have to type the folder you are searching for. The indexing and search offered by Everything is speedy.

<img decoding="async" width="1106" height="760" style="border:1px solid" src="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything-folder-filter.png" alt=""title="Everything folder filter" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4364" srcset="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything-folder-filter.png 1106w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything-folder-filter-300x206.png 300w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything-folder-filter-768x528.png 768w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Everything-folder-filter-1024x704.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1106px) 100vw, 1106px" />

Note: With RecentX, you can even add tags to your files and folders for easy access later on. Learn more about this tagging feature from here :

Search in Recent items first

Since we open the same set of files repeatedly, finding only in recently accessed files and folders is more sensible compared to going through the complete hard drive. RecentX does precisely that for you. Items that are recently and frequently accessed are shown before other trivial items, thus making launch easier.

This is possible since RecentX automatically remembers your recently accessed files and folders. So you do not have to spend time configuring it with your favorite items as it is quite hard to keep updating a program with favorite files & folders.

Note: You can also search in all your items instead of just the recent ones.

<img decoding="async" width="550" height="416" style="border:1px solid" src="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Screenshot_Find_In_All_Files.png" alt=""title="Find In All Files" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4377" srcset="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Screenshot_Find_In_All_Files.png 550w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Screenshot_Find_In_All_Files-300x227.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px" />

Everything, on the other hand, has the option to sort items based on Dated Accessed, modified, etc. But sorting the items based on it is really slow, and the long list of items still remains, only that they are now in a different order which doesn’t make much of a difference.

<img decoding="async" width="863" height="589" style="border:1px solid" src="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Recent-items.png" alt=""title="Recent items" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4351" srcset="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Recent-items.png 863w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Recent-items-300x205.png 300w, https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/Recent-items-768x524.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 863px) 100vw, 863px" />

As you can see from the above picture, the search results in RecentX have been narrowed down compared to Everything since we searched only in recent items in RecentX.

RecentX therefore proves an efficient alternative to Everything. The plus point is that there is nothing to learn. It is effortless and also works out of the box. Just install and see it working.

Learn more about RecentX from here.

Have a good day!

Thanks for reading till the end :)

This post will highlight the ways in which you can work with files and folders easily in Windows by comparing the functions of Everything by Voidtools and an alternative, RecentX.

<img decoding="async" width="218" height="266" src="https://www.conceptworld.com/blog/uploads/2018/10/RecentX.png" alt=""title="RecentX" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4266" />

Let’s see how to achieve this.

Select a file faster in the file open/save window

The file open/save dialog window that is shown by all Windows applications is very tedious to use. RecentX makes it very easy to select any file in this window. When the file open/save window opens, find & choose the file using RecentX. The file name will be automatically displayed in the File Open/Save window, after which you need to click on “Open.” That’s it.

Everything: This function is not available in Everything by Voidtools. You can easily copy or move an item from one place to another but not open or save them from within the program itself.

Quickly access files and folders by tagging them

RecentX lets you tag any file or folder in Windows. Tagging files help you to access a group of files/folders etc. in a few seconds, however deep they are in your system. This feature can save a lot of time. You can also send standard email replies to your clients by tagging clipboard items.

Everything: It does not have a tagging feature, but it does have a filter feature to sort items according to their type.

To learn about the RecentX tagging feature in detail, check out the following blog post:

Search and access website history & bookmarks of all major browsers

We usually don’t remember which website we browsed to find a particular content. RecentX serves as a log that you can access to check which websites you browsed so that you can re-visit them quickly. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since you accessed the site. You can find it even after 1 month or 3 months or 6 months using RecentX.

RecentX lets you access website history & bookmarks from major browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc. on Windows.

Tip: To find and launch a website faster, you can even create and use tags.

Everything: With this, you can add a list of files as a bookmark to access the same files easily for future use. However, you cannot search or access website history from browsers.

This short video will give you more clarity on this:

Open a website in any browser

Since RecentX shows websites & bookmarks from all major browsers, you can also open them in any browser of your choice – Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Internet Explorer, etc. The “Open With” option lets you open any web page in any installed browser.

Useful for testing the same website in multiple Internet browsers. It comes handy when some sites work only in a particular Internet browser.

Everything: This is again not possible to do with Everything.

Conveniently access clipboard history

RecentX remembers all the text & images that you copy to the clipboard. It keeps track of items as old as six months to a year and as new as something copied an hour back or a day back. Just pick them directly from RecentX when needed, instead of copy-pasting the same things repeatedly. This is simple and a real time saver. What more? You can even tag the clipboard history items to access them faster the next time.

Watch this short video to find out what more you can do with the Clipboard History Manager:

Everything: This function is not available in Everything.

Thus RecentX proves very efficient, productive and easy at the same time.

This article will tell you how to easily access files and folders by tagging them in Windows using RecentX and Everything by Voidtools.

Why tag files and folders?

We often find ourselves opening the same files and folders again and again for our work. Therefore easy and fast access to these files and folders is essential for work productivity. Setting up a tagging system is, therefore, a good idea.

A tag is generally a keyword or a term that you assign to a piece of information like your files, folders, images, etc. This helps you easily organize your files and folders and helps you avoid multi-folder navigation, especially when your folder structure is so complex that it takes a lot of time to find files.

Everything (Voidtools)

Everything has a “Filters” feature. Using this, you can separate items based on their type like document, folder, video, audio, pictures, etc. and only view files of a particular type according to the selected filter. For example, when you select the “audio” filter, all the audio files on your system are listed down. You can then search and access your file from this list.

RecentX

Watch a short video perfectly depicting this feature:

RecentX enables you to find files and folders in a more meaningful way by letting you tag them. These tags let you categorize files, folders, apps & websites based on categories, file types, projects, etc. for easy access in the future. You can even add multiple tags to a particular item.

These tags can be of two types:

Regular tags

Smart tags

Regular Tags

Tags assigned to specific files are Regular Tags.

Say, you have a file, “Orders”, which you update every day. You don’t have to go to the file location repeatedly to access it. Just tag the file as anything you want. Ex: docs, important, etc. So the next time you want to open it, type the tag in the RecentX search window, and a list of all files with the mentioned tag will appear. Just a single click and your file opens instantly. This is easy since you can enable search only in “Recent” items instead of all files and folders, thereby narrowing down the file list.

All your tags show up on top in the tag toolbar so that you don’t even have to search for the tags. This is also helpful when you have lots of tags, and you don’t remember what tag you had assigned to a particular file.

Regular tags are in blue.

How do i add a regular tag?
This is very simple. Right-click on the item you want to tag and select “Tag” from the options.

A “Tag” Window will open where you can type in your tag(s).
Note: If you want to add multiple tags, separate them with a comma (,).

Can i edit my tag later?
Yes. Editing tags is as easy as adding tags. Right-click on the tag name in the tags toolbar and edit the tag.

Is it possible to delete a tag?
When you no longer need a particular tag, delete it by selecting it from the tags toolbar on top.

Smart Tags

Tags assigned to a specific type of files or folders (based on keywords) are Smart Tags.

Smart Tags in RecentX let you save keywords that you frequently use to search your regularly accessed files and folders. Ex: “pdfs” for your PDF files and “docs” for your word documents. Typically, if you would type .doc, all the files having .doc in their name would be listed down. But when you click on the docs tag, only files given this tag are listed, so you don’t have to scroll through a long list of files. This is similar to the filter feature of “Everything” listed above.

These smart tags are listed in the tags toolbar in Red color.

How do i add a smart tag?
Click on the Tags button located on the top left of your RecentX window. Select the option “New Smart Tag”. Type in the tag name(s) and the keyword(s) for the tag in the smart tag window that opens.

How do i edit this tag later?
Editing smart tags is the same as editing regular tags. Click on the Tags button on the top left of the RecentX window, click on the Edit Tag option and select the tag that needs to be edited from the menu.

Or you can just right-click on the Smart tag name directly from the tags toolbar and edit it too.

Can smart tags be deleted too?
Yes. Deleting smart tags is easy, just like regular tags. Right-click on the tag name directly from the tags toolbar and delete it.

This article will tell you how to select files and folders in the open & save window faster and easier than usual, using RecentX, an innovative file launcher for Windows.

When you have to open a file from an application like notepad or excel or the most commonly used word, you generally have to search for the file in various folders.
You probably won’t remember where the file is located among a large number of folders and subfolders. Also, the file may have different versions at different places if you have the habit of taking backups.

This consumes a lot of your time and effort. This is why you should use RecentX which will open a file quickly for you.

Integrating with the Windows File open/save dialog

Here is a short video showing how this works:

All you need to do is:

Open the file Open/Save window.

Open the RecentX window too.

In the RecentX window, search for the file quickly and select it. The file name will be automatically displayed in the File Open/Save window too.

Now select “Open” in the Open/Save window and that’s it, your file will open instantly.

Not just files, you can use RecentX to open folders too. You need to follow the same steps again, and the folder will open within a few seconds. This is how it saves a lot of your time and efforts.
