A Free Workshop Exploring The smArtmob; Collaborative & participatory art production strategies.

A Free Workshop Exploring The smArtmob; Collaborative & participatory art production strategies

In this workshop students will apply strategies of the networked age as approaches for contemporary art production.
Participants will develop a participatory art project by using concepts like crowdsourcing, collective intelligence and smartmobs. Students propose concepts to each other for a 'smArtmob' intervention: an interactive visual intervention in (virtual) public space. Out of these propositions the best idea will be chosen through voting and carried out by all of the participants in small groups. These production groups will follow the 'rules' of the chosen intervention, and may alter the original idea by choosing a creative approach or innovative materials & techniques. The best interventions are those who succeed in attracting the attention of as many people as possible - in real life or on the internet.
At the end of the day the 'smArtmob' approach and the artistic results will be critically discussed among the participants.

Tuesday February 28th, 10AM - 4PM, EV 6.735, SGW Campus, Concordia University

Email your name & contact info to scharb@alcor.concordia.ca to secure a space. All welcome.

If you have laptops, smart phones, and media capture devices bring them along. However, they are not required in order to participate. All other materials will be provided.

Instructor Biography:
Emiel Heijnen is a Dutch art/media educator and researcher. His field of interest is interdisciplinary arts education in connection to contemporary art, popular culture, media activism and urban interventions. He is a senior lecturer at the Amsterdam School of the Arts and researcher at the Radboud University Nijmegen. He is a member of the AHK Arts Education Research Group and initiator of (inter)national education projects like Media Connection, MediaCulture and Remix Culture.

With generous support from:
FOFA Gallery
Faculty of Fine Arts
FASA
Graduate Students Association
ArtEGS
Art Education Undergraduate Students Association

Parasites, Installation by Maria Ezcurra Eaton Centre, Art Souterrain, Nuit Blanche February 25, 2012 6:00pm to 3:00am
Parasites an installation by Maria Ezcurra is showing at Eaton Centre, as part of Art Souterrain during Nuit Blanche February 25, 2012 6:00pm to 3am.
Reacting to the commonly oppressive aspects of the fashion industry, Parasites is an installation made with crinolines that questions the feminine roles assigned to women in contemporary western societies, imposed mostly by popular visual culture and media. Despite the fact that they restrict movement, crinolines are still used for keeping the required shapes by women who perform certain kind of rituals, like weddings, and proms. These kinds of ceremonies are also known as rites of passage, and tend to transform a physical body into a social body, providing important clues to the mechanics of society.
For more information go to www.artsouterrain.com/

advice from them, based on their experience in the Film Production
program. There will also be screenings of works from the current
students.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What should I bring to Portfolio Day?
Bring
your portfolio! Your portfolio can include finished pieces, work in
progress, and sketchbooks. Bring your original artwork whenever
possible. We suggest that you do not spend time and money matting or
framing your work. Keep your presentation simple; the work itself is
what is of interest. Works that are too large or too fragile to
transport may be presented as photographs, on a laptop, CD-ROM, DVD or
flash drive. A limited number of computer stations will be available to
view digital works.

My portfolio is incomplete. Can I still attend?
Absolutely.
This is your chance to get on the right track. You will be able to
obtain feedback on your work in progress and ask questions about our
programs and portfolio requirements. Admission and scholarship decisions
will not be made during Portfolio Day.

Do I need to register for Portfolio Day?
No,
you do not need to register for Portfolio Day. Participants will be
admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early!

For any additional information on Portfolio Day, please send an email to studyfinearts@concordia.ca or find us on Facebook.

Related links:

Fine Arts portfolio and admissions information

Fine Arts Future Students on Facebook

December 8th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The artist will be present at the opening.
The exhibit will remain open until February 3rd, 2012 from Monday to Friday from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2p.m. to 5p.m.

María Ezcurra's work for this exhibition is a series of poetic negotiations that explore the tensions between the intimate and the public spheres as well as her aesthetic and political concerns. Through the use of clothes and other soft materials, the artist deals with issues of positionality and the mental, physical and emotional consequences of moving between and across intellectual, spatial and psychic locations. María Ezcurra's sculptures, done at home and intimately related to her roles as wife, mother and artist, extend from the domestic and into city space, emphasizing that what is personal is also public and therefore political. By sharing her own, unique situation and confessing her anxieties, the artist opens up the possibility for other people to do so, to understand our potential for being meaning makers and produce a collective social body that connects through shared experiences. By bringing us back to the material, discursive and affective sites we occupy, María Ezcurra invites reflexivity upon the crises these diverse and constant negotiations of who we are, where we are and what we are doing, entail. The artist's ability to play with her own positions within a socially predetermined grid denotes a strong desire to question not only the establishment but also her own responsibility in perpetuating arranged behaviors.

On the Edge: Taking Risks in Art Education

Proposals Due: Friday, January 20th, 2012
This conference will be a space for graduate and undergraduate students
in the fields of art education, studio arts, performing arts, art
history, cultural studies, humanities, creative art therapies,
educational technologies and other fields of knowledge to address art
and education as a site in which risk can be taken and used as a means
for transformation. The idea of risk may take the form of classroom
interactions or in pre-service art education, community events,
interventions in technology and urban and visual culture. Risk may also
apply in the form of cross-disciplinary methodologies, creative
therapies, interventions within different communities, and the
development of critical approaches to art and education.

For more information got to http://concordiaartedsymposium.wordpress.com/
As Digital Projects Coordinator at the Centre, I taught workshops on creating mediascapes, (GPS-enabled multi-media tours), and web-based Map Mashups. Come to learn about art paired with location-based media.

Zachary Kenny, MA Student

"Medical patient education material production from an arts educator and illustrator's perspective"

At McGill Molson Medical Informatics in Montréal, illustrators meet with healthcare specialists to create patient education materials favouring images and animated sequences over text, providing patients with an easy understanding of anatomy, diseases and treatment options.
