We invite scholars and professionals to submit session proposals for the annual UAAC-AAUC conference, to be held at Concordia University in Montreal, November 1 - 3, 2012. Sessions are encouraged that explore - within any geographical and temporal context - issues from the full range of scholarship in art history, visual and material culture, art and design practices, theory and criticism, and museum and gallery practices. The Program Committee welcomes proposals for chaired (or co-chaired) sessions, roundtables and workshops.

Please note that only ONE proposal will be accepted per member, whether that proposal is for a single or jointly chaired session, roundtable or workshop.

Proposals (which can be in English or French) should include a title; a 150 word description of the panel; and full contact information for the session chair(s).

Only members of UAAC-AAUC may chair or co-chair sessions. Non-members who propose sessions will be required to become members in the event that their proposals are accepted. Members are further reminded that MA students may not propose sessions and that only a limited number of session proposals by PhD students will be accepted. Session proposals will be reviewed by the UAAC- AAUC Program Committee, and a Call for Papers in response to the selected sessions will be issued in early March.

Le comité du programme acceptera des propositions pour des séances présidées par une seule personne ou coprésidées, des tables rondes et des groupes de travail.

Veuillez noter que nous n'accepterons qu'une seule proposition d'un même adhérent, qu'il s'agisse d'une proposition pour une séance unique ou coprésidée, une table ronde ou un groupe de travail.

Les propositions (qui peuvent être en français ou en anglais) doivent comprendre un titre, une description en 150 mots du panel et tous les renseignements pertinents quant à la personne qui présidera la séance, ou les personnes le cas échéant.

We invite proposals on any aspect of American Art that relate to the symposium's theme of the Academy, Museums, and the Market. Proposed papers should be 20-minute, formal papers on any period of American art, in any media, from 1600 to the present day.

We are also inviting proposals, from current graduate students at the dissertation stage, for a Graduate Student Lightning Round Session at the conference. Proposed papers for this session should be a 5-minute synopsis of the larger research project.

In the subject line of your email, please distinguish whether you are applying for inclusion in the general symposium (20-minute paper) or in the Graduate Student Lightning Round Session (5-minute paper). Please only apply to one type of session.

Is the Unknown a construct? Can we actually construct the Unknown, and if so how do we do it? This conference aims to explore the boundaries of language, culture, scientific research, artistic production and images in relation to the Unknown, in order to think about the limits of science and the future of human society. We are pleased to hold the 2012 conference in partnership with the Polish Mediations Biennale 3: The Unknown - Nieznane. The location of the city of Poznan in Poland and Europe creates a wonderful opportunity for it to become a mediator between Eastern and Western Europe, between Asia and Europe, and between the civilizations of the west and the east. The word MEDIATIONS also applies to the relationship between all fields of art, attitudes, outlooks on life, and generations. The Unknown - Nieznane: Works of art disclose areas which are incomprehensible and which cannot be expressed with the use of the words. We create knowledge of what is familiar to us and about the secret of our existence. Art awakens in us the sensibility and awareness of the presence of things that are unknown in our lives. During the MEDIATIONS BIENNALE, there will be works of ancient, modern and contemporary art presented and created by the artists from different cultural areas around the world.

In addition to an impressive line-up of international plenary speakers, the conference will also include paper presentations, roundtable discussions, workshops, and colloquia submitted by practitioners, teachers and researchers. Plenary lecture : Dr. Kim de Beaumont, Adjunct professor at Hunter College, Art Historian specialist of Gabriel de Saint-Aubin.

The historiography of the Salon of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris is often bereft of a key part of its history: how the Salon itself became an art institution. Originally integrated into the "fêtes de l'Académie", over time the Salon came to be best known in the form of a temporary, independent, and recurrent exhibition. This event developed little by little, reimagining itself through and eventually blossoming as the popular biennal exhibition. The unique character of the Salon was established through the regular repetition of the exhibition cycle, a sequence that helped to root the event's particular characteristics in the minds of the public and in the regard of other institutions. In creating this rhythm within Parisians' horizon of expectation, the Salon provided a habitus for their audience; moreover, the Salon inspired curiosity and desire in the provinces and nations that sought to imitate it.

This conference seeks to define and better understand the trajectory followed by the Salon from its emergence in the late 17th century to its full maturity in the second half of the 18th century. This symposium aims also to identify the diverse parameters and conditions that contributed to the development and helped to affirm the singularity of the Salon. This call for papers solicits proposals that will increase our understanding of the foundations and limits that shaped the form and content of the Salon as well as help us to survey the influence and impact of these exhibitions on various aspects of French and European society.

As a multidisciplinary event, this conference is a laboratory and reflection on current research and scholarly approaches that consider the Salon and its place in the "art worlds", as well as literature, philosophy, politics, and history.

The symposium session The New Native American Art History has been accepted for inclusion at the 54th International Congress of Americanists, to be held in Vienna in July of 2012. This session explores the ways in which the field of Native American art history has been transformed since 1992, the Year of Indigenous Peoples. In this watershed year, a number of Columbian Quincentennial Response Shows were mounted, bringing Native American art and culture to a new degree of public attention, and placing it in the context of a worldwide discourse on the legacies of European colonialism. Additionally, 1992 saw the publication of Janet Catherine Berlo's The Early Years of Native American Art History. Compiled and published during a time of rapid change in the larger field of cultural studies, Berlo's volume was reflective of a growing tendency toward disciplinary critique.

Today the study and display of Native American art has been transformed by the introduction of new theories of visual culture; post-colonial, global, and media studies; and by an emerging interest in indigenous epistemologies. The New Native American Art History seeks to explore in detail some of these developments, incursions, and conflicts, and assess their impact in the development of a new history. We are interested in papers that address the theoretical, methodological and institutional changes and challenges of the past two decades. These might include discussion and analysis of the passage in the United States of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act; the founding of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian; the formation of alternative spaces of exhibition such as tribal museums; the emergence of an aboriginal curatorial perspective; or consideration of the increasing visibility of Native American contemporary art provided by international Biennials.

The nature and limits of perception are fiercely contested -- both by analytic and continental philosophers as well as researchers in other disciplines. For example, some take ethical perception, or perceptual access to forms or structures, to be genuine phenomena, whereas others find this empirically or philosophically implausible. Furthermore, it remains disputed whether in ordinary sensory awareness we perceive objects, facts, representations, sense data, qualia, concepts, or other entities.

Furthermore, the intense interdisciplinary interest in perception -- spanning psychology, art, neuroscience and psychiatry, amongst other areas -- can promise to provide philosophy with exciting new resources and opportunities for collaborative inquiry. Yet, it also raises questions about the boundaries of philosophical investigation into perception, including whether philosophy has such any legitimate role at all.

In this conference, we seek to explore the scope of the philosophy of perception (understood as broadly as possible). We invite abstracts of around 500 words for presentations of 20 minutes on any topic related to perception.

Submissions from graduate students working within all traditions of philosophy are encouraged, alongside contributions from non-philosophers with research interests in this area. Possible questions and topics speakers include, but are in no means limited to:

-To what degree is perception conceptually structured?
-What is the relation between perception and cinema?
-How does the philosophy of perception inform psychiatric and/or psychoanalytic practice?
-How are we to understand the differences between animal and human perception?
-What, if any, is the relation between perception, time and memory?
-What role do identity and difference play in affording us perceptual access to the world?
-Is there such a thing as moral/ethical perception?
-What does hallucination tell us about veridical perception, if anything?

We invite proposals for papers and/or panels on theories of popular culture, research methods in popular culture, the teaching of popular culture, and any epiphenomena of popular culture, past or present.

Our broad definition of popular culture encompasses communicative texts, practices and experiences, mediated and unmediated, contemporary and historical, Canadian and non-Canadian (including the local and the global).

We share an interdisciplinary vision of this Association. We are particularly interested in featuring papers from scholars and/or producers and practitioners of popular cultural phenomena from the humanities, the arts, and the sciences.

An Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference at the University of Western Ontario, Canada

On 17 December 2010, Tunisian fruit vendor Mohamed Bouazizi performed an act of self-immolation in protest of widespread state corruption. Galvanized by Bouazizi's gesture of dissent, Tunisians protested en masse, successfully demanding the removal of the oppressive regime in power. The Tunisian experience inspired what would come to be known as the Arab Spring, threatening the overthrow of totalitarian regimes across the Middle East, most notably in Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Yemen. While the Western mainstream media hypocritically debated the pros and cons of democratic self-determination in the Arab world, Europe and North America saw the eruption of similar acts of resistance in their own backyards, from the "Los Indignados" of Spain to the Occupy Wall Street movements of America, Canada, and the UK. While it is still too soon to gauge the lasting historical legacy of today's political activism, one thing is for certain: Revolution is back as an historically viable concept of political praxis, laying to rest once and for all (we hope) Fukuyama's thesis on the end of history.

Alongside these political upheavals, tragic events of the last 20 years--from Rwandan Genocide in 1994 to the World Trade Centre attacks in 2001--reveal the necessity to address the ways in which large-scale violence and catastrophe affect both individual lives and socio-political conditions. The recent turn to trauma theory in both theoretical discourses and artistic practices indicate what Derrida might call a burning desire to understand not only the political but also the psychic effects of these events. From scientific databases (Medline, PsychINFO, and P.I.L.O.T.S) to contemporary installation art (Christian Boltanski's Personnes and Alfredo Jaar's Rwanda Project) to literary representations (W. G. Sebald's Austerlitz and Toni Morison's Beloved), we see the pressure to develop a new set of conceptual tools with which to understand, archive, and interpret the aftermaths of such historical trauma. The Fourth Annual Graduate Conference of the Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism at the University of Western Ontario aims to discuss, challenge, and reveal new theoretical and artistic perspectives on both revolution and recovery in the aftermath of violent events.

We are now seeking submissions that address the effects of political oppression and the trauma of violent events from interdisciplinary perspectives within the social sciences and the arts and humanities. Topics of discussion could include, but are not limited to:
-Revolution as symptom
-Revolution as radical democratic intervention
-Trauma and resistance
-Global capitalism and the fetish of liberal democracy
-Media representations of political violence and catastrophe
-International responses to disaster
-Ideological appropriations of traumatic events in political discourses
-Artistic representations of political violence and its aftermaths
-Theoretical, practical, and artistic responses to revolution and recovery
-Representations of revolution
-The Politics of Recovery
-Re-conceptualizing the Left

In welcoming cross-disciplinary approaches, the conference Aftermaths: Revolution and Recovery will engage in dialogues about contemporary understandings of state oppression and the means to both understand and actualize effective responses to it through collective action.

We invite submissions in English or French from graduate students in any relevant discipline. We accept proposals for:
-Academic papers [Presentation of 20 minutes]
-Panel topics: If submitting a panel suggestion, please provide 3 linked abstracts with a short paragraph explaining the overarching theme.

Is it time for a new history of women and art in Canada? If so, what might such a history, or set of histories, look like? With four decades of scholarship to draw on, women's art history is well established as a critical approach that has broadened the range of issues, objects and practitioners open to art historical consideration. In Canada, research into this expanded field has produced both narrative overviews and analytic case studies. What are the strengths of this scholarship, and what remains to be achieved? What challenges are raised by the task of integrating existing knowledge into a broader synthetic framework, and what solutions can we imagine? Which stories are still to be told? What gaps and omissions would frame such a history from its margins?

We invite proposals for 20 minute papers that address any aspect of a new history of women and art in Canada. These may range from historically geared analyses of the artworks and artists that such a history could include, to methodologically oriented discussions of its theoretical, organizational or technological horizons. Proposals from academics, curators, librarians, archivists and artists are all welcome.

Irony makes the world new by putting the world that exists in question. Its strength lies in its destabilizing power--it is the politics of art, the art of politics, and the language of dissent. By enabling critical representations of the world as it is known, but from within and against the familiarity of our own expectations, irony gives art and discourse special kinds of access to the public sphere, especially by mining beneath the given, the actual, and the known.

In politics, philosophy, art and literature, across post-modernism, post-colonialism, and globalization, the question of irony is of expanding relevance to a range of fields of cultural formation and inquiry. Yet it remains insufficiently noticed, understood, or theorized; ironically powerful and silent at once. What is the meaning of irony? What does it accomplish and exactly how and with what effects? Is irony impoverished or indispensable, disenchanted or enchanting, world-breaking or world-making?

Conference organizers invite proposals for papers addressing the public and public-making function of irony across time and through a range of contexts and media. Disciplines may include but are not limited to:

The graduate program in Social and Political Thought at York University is pleased to announce the 26th interdisciplinary graduate student conference, Strategies of Critique, on April 12 & 13, 2012. We welcome submissions from all fields that relate to social and political theory, activism, psychoanalytic theory and practice, art and literature, and social justice. We encourage critical engagements with other thinkers and bodies of thought that engage with the conference theme of "the wretched of the earth."

Keynote Speaker: Prof. Gamal Abdel-Shehid, York University

The 2012 Strategies of Critique conference is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth. Fanon's book, appearing at the end of the Algerian War of Independence and after its author's death, galvanized and inspired those engaged in struggle against colonialism and racial oppression. It divided the left, especially with its thoughts on violence and the revolutionary potential of non-proletarian actors. And it prompted extreme assessments - from calling the book a "revolutionary bible" to calling out its author for naiveté, nihilism, or bloodthirstiness. Later, the book would become one of the founding texts of Postcolonial Theory, and would be read and re-visited by activists, psychologists, writers, artists, philosophers, and many others. The Strategies of Critique conference seeks to revisit, re-examine, and continue these encounters with Les Damnés de la terre and the ideas it engages.

First, the conference invites considerations of the legacy of Fanon's ideas in critique and in action. Fanon's ideas had a global reception, from Vietnam to the United States, from South Africa to West Germany, from India to Nicaragua. The dangers he warned of - neo-colonialism, the continued disenfranchisement of the formerly colonized masses, the psychological effects of oppression and violence - have had global resonance, suggesting the continued need to revisit and renew Fanon's critique.

Second, the conference invites reflection on the historical context of decolonization in its emergence, its contradictions, and its incompletion. The Wretched of the Earth, though it took its title from the anthem of (European) international socialism, emerged from the period of worldwide internationalism, third-worldism, the Bandung summit, and countless movements for the rediscovery of old cultures and the formation of new ones. We invite consideration of this period and of its legacy. Today, past the end of formal European colonization, what is the status of Fanon's call for a "new man" who would leave Europe behind?

Third, we look at the present and ask, how do people become wretched, and how do they become unwretched? What strategies can and do people appropriate and create for themselves today against neo-colonialism, military interventions, racial and religious discrimination, climate change, dispossession, and war? What do they face in their struggle for recognition, for freedom and dignity? We invite reflections on, including but not limited to, indigenous struggles for decolonization, and the global protest movements - uprisings in North Africa and the Arab world, mass protests in Southeast Asia and in Africa, anti-austerity movements in Europe, and the occupy movement.
