Saturday Bible School

We will have Saturday Bible School on March 24th, from 8:30-3:30. It will be the third part of our “Big Jungle Adventure”. The helper sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board near the flower chart. As it shows, there will be a lesson, crafts, naptime, games and music. We need helpers for all of these. We will serve a morning snack, lunch, and refreshments after the closing and will need kitchen helpers for these. The 3 & 4 yr olds will have naptime while the older kids work on crafts or have recreation. The registrations forms will be due Fri, March 16th. We will need to have enough helpers lined up by then as well.

We also need helpers for Set-Up and Take-Down. This doesn’t take long if we have several people to help. We hang some decorations from the ceiling as well as clear out one of the rooms MDO uses and set it up as a campsite for the day. We will do the set-up on Th 3/15 or Fri 3/16. We will do the Take-Down either Sat 3/24 or Sun 3/25.

Voters’ Assembly/Chili Cook-Off

Sunday, February 19. It’s that time again for our annual chili cook-off, so dig out your recipes or try a new one!! The competition is always hot!! Those who do not wish to bring chili, please bring condiments or desserts. There is a sign up sheet in the back foyer by the flower chart. The Voters’ Assembly will include the approval of our budget for the 2012 fiscal year. All those confirmed members 18 and over are encouraged to be a part of this meeting.

Evangelicalism by first divorcing itself from the sacraments has unhinged itself from the grace of God. By making everything symbolic and thus declaring nothing to be real, the pastor is left with the only rational conclusion his "confession" has left open to him, since he is selling a house of cards he must wrap it in the best and shiniest packaging anyone ever saw.

But a church which is committed to the forgiveness of sin and rebirth by water through the Holy Spirit in Baptism making us new creatures in Christ, new creatures for which earthly food holds no satisfaction, and so offers the spiritual food of the actual body and blood of our Lord Jesus christ to fill and sustain us as we walk as sojourners in this world, is a Church which never need sell anything because it has Christ.

Those who receive Christ become the similitude of Christ and the sweet savour fo Christ pervades their lives in sucha way that they need no slick adverts or fabulous new music, they need only humble service rendered to Christ which so appealing to the lost soul that if, by God grace alone, he is seeking, then he fly to the baptism and cling to the body and blood his whole life because he will have learned that this is life.

Evangelicalism cheapens and symbolizes this by making the Christian Faith a credulous hanging on to what I believe without ever reinforcing that belief by the means ordained by Christ. This is treachery to Christ and as such is not Chriatianity of any sort.

Harvest House

Although food drives at schools and churches in the holiday season provide much needed help, Harvest House still is in need of many food items for Thanksgiving and Christmas. With the economy as it is, there are more and more families who are seeking assistance. In addition of food items, they also need toiletries and toilet paper. So please pick up extra items while you shop if you are able. There are collection boxes in the Sanctuary and also by the church office.

Harvest House is open to clients from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. They are located at 349 NW Renfro Street in Burleson. Their phone number is 817-295-6252 if you wish to volunteer.

Advent “Souper” Suppers

During the Advent season on Wednesday evening, we will be serving a “Souper” Supper at 6:15PM. This should make it easier for all our families to attend, since they will not have to go home and cook. One or two families will be responsible for the meal each week. There is a sign up sheet for the three Wednesday evenings, November 30, December 7 and December 14. Please sign up to bring soup or another main course of your choosing, side dishes or desserts. If you have any questions, please call Rita Marshall.

Advent Worship Services will begin at 7:15PM each Wednesday evening.

Thanksgiving Eve Service

Our Annual Thanksgiving Worship Service will be on Thanksgiving Eve, November 23 at 7:15PM. All of our church family is encouraged to gather together and give thanks to God for all the blessings we receive daily, especially for the gift of salvation which is ours in Christ Jesus.

Fund Raiser for the Parking Lot

Please take note!!! This is short notice, but Sunday, November 20 we will gather as a church family to enjoy a BBQ lunch provided by our elders. They will provide the meat and side dishes. We will need 5-6 desserts. Please sign up in the foyer if you can bring a dessert. There will be a free will offering taken during the dinner to add monies to our Parking Lot Fund.

Mother’s Day Out

Our program has started the 21st year of caring for children from age 6 months to 4 years (Pre-K). The program meets every Tuesday and Thursday during the school year from 8:45AM to 2:15PM.

The children learn from age appropriate materials. The younger classes are busy learning the alphabet, numbers, colors and shapes. “Super Kids” is a fun learning Kindergarten program that is used for the Pre-K class. The classes all have a Bible story of the month. Pastor has chapel with the 3 and 4 year olds once a week.

Voter’s Assembly Meeting / New Member’s Dinner

The next quarterly meeting is Sunday, September 18 following worship. Election of officers will be at the December Voter’s Assembly meeting. The following offices are up for election: President, Secretary, Financial Secretary, Chairman-Board of Parish Services, Chairman-Board of Trustees & Chairman-Board of Evangelism. Please prayerfully consider serving the Lord here at Charity in one of these offices.

Those members who have been received into membership since last September will be honored. The theme for the lunch is “Potluck Picnic”. There is a sign-up sheet in the foyer. Please sign up for food items you will be bringing. Remember to bring extra for our new members!

Saturday Bible School

We will have Saturday Bible School on Saturday, September 17th, from 8:30-3:30. It will be the second part of The Big Jungle Adventure. Children age 3 to 6th grade are welcome to attend. We will begin with an opening. We will serve a morning snack along with lunch, and have Bible stories, crafts and music. The 3 & 4 yr olds will have naptime after lunch while the older kids work on crafts or have recreation. The parents will join us for a short Closing Service at 3:00 with refreshments afterward.

Registration forms and medical authorization forms are available at the church office, 1101 SW Wilshire Blvd, or online at www.confessionallutheran.org. They will need to be filled out for each child individually. The registration forms will be due Fri, Sept 9th. This will allow us time to get the correct amount of supplies and food.

If you have any questions, please call the church office, 817-295-8621.

The helper sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin board near the flower chart. We will need several helpers, about a dozen would be great! Men, women, or teens are welcome to help. Some duties can be combined, if needed. If we don’t have enough helpers signed up by Sunday, September 4th, we won’t be able to have Bible School.

Today the Church commemorates the life of St. Jerome who translated the Bible into Latin. This translation, known as the Vulgate, was the authoritative version of the Bible in the western Church world for over 1,000 years.

I read a quote of his today that fits well with this discussion. “I interpret as I should, following the command of Christ: Search the Scriptures, and Seek and you shall find. Christ will not say to me what he said to the Jews: You erred, not knowing the Scriptures and not knowing the power of God. For if, as Paul says, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and if the man who does not know Scripture does not know the power and wisdom of God, then ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ."

I had seen it, and cynically thought to myself, "okay . . . America's protestants don't really have a clue. How is that news?" But you are absolutely correct: Whether the problem is newsworthy or not is beside the point. What matters is that there is a problem, and the solution is a return to the study of the Word of God and the doctrine that our Lord has entrusted to the Holy Church.

We are told in 1Peter 3:15 to "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." That is just on reason why the survey released Tuesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life is so embarassing.

A news article on FOXnews.com covered some of the highlites of the survey results. Here is the first paragraph:

A new survey of Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists, agnostics, Jews and Mormons outperformed Protestants and Roman Catholics in answering questions about major religions, while many respondents could not correctly give the most basic tenets of their own faiths.

The article left me asking myself how prepared I am to give an answer. Would I do better on this survey than the non-Christian groups that outperformed Protestants?

The Ft. Worth Star Telegram had an article today about the United Methodist Church and their desperate efforts to solve the question of how to stem the decades-long losses in membership and attract new worshippers. In the article they hold up as an example of success one of their churches in Indianapolis. From the article:

One of the successful churches is St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, which has seen its membership steadily grow over the years to nearly 6,200.

The church's senior pastor, the Rev. Kent Millard, said it has offered both traditional and contemporary worship services for years. At a contemporary service, congregants kick back with doughnuts and coffee, a live band plays music and clips from Hollywood movies are shown to illustrate Gospel messages.

"Worship is like going to a mall," Millard said. "There are all kinds of stores. Some people like specialty shops. Some like department stores. When you have variety, people can go where they like."

OH MY!! Is it really any surprise that many so called Evangelicals cannot tell you what the Gospel is? Notice that success is defined by numbers and not the proclamation of the Gospel. In fact, based on the description above, it is questionable if the Gospel is even proclaimed. Is this a Church or or just a social club?

Our Augsburg Confession states in Article VII "The Church is the congregation of saints in which the Gospel is purely taught and the Sacraments are correctly administered." Thanks be to God that this is what is received at Charity Lutheran Church in the Divine Service.

I just wanted to let you know that the eighth triennial Lutheran Hymn Festival is coming up on September 19 at 7 p.m. at the Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Attention Everyone!

If you have not had a chance to complete the bible study survey presented by the Christian Education department, please take a few minutes to complete one this week. The Christian Education department is very interested in what you would like to study so they can provide the means wherever possible. They can't do this without everyone's input. If you know someone who is not a registered member that might be interested, print a copy for them and ask them to complete one as well. Better still, inform them of this website and its benefits so they will register as well!

So, take a few minutes out of you busy schedule to provide the group your input.

I know some of the tables will be needed outside but I would expect there to be some left over. We can certainly set up a few tables inside as needed. We can also set up some chairs in the breezeway, utilizing the shade.
