Happy Friday The 13th. Or maybe we just don’t talk about that.

As more and more Christmas trees pop up in stores I keep going back to our Fall bucket list. There is plenty of time left this Fall to knock a few more things off! Holiday’s are not too far away so while many people are out there looking for their Ugly Christmas Sweaters and kicking off their shopping I’m over here just watching the leaves change.

Okay, not really.

Wouldn’t that be nice to curl up and do all day? We’ve had a lot of rain this week and I’m pretty happy that today is Friday. Let’s talk about some of our favorite links this week.

October Link Love

The gymnastics nerd came out in me last week again as the World Championships took place over. Not only did we have a new World Champion for the first time in FOREVER on both the men’s and women’s side but the women’s world champ is also a Harry Potter fan. My day was made watching her interactions with J.K. Rowling on twitter.

One of my favorite things about mommy bloggers is how often you can relate. Scary Mommy hit the nail on the head (again) this week at the exact moment I needed her to. Let’s all stop judging each other, okay?

This Twitter account filled with Dad jokes has been one of my favorite reads this week. If you aren’t following it, you should be now.

One of our favorite things to do lately is turn up the music and have a dance party. Our phones connect to a cheap bluetooth speaker. It honestly one of the best technology investments we’ve ever made. We listen to Kidsbop in the car and Little Man is SO excited that the new Kidsbop album comes out today so we can play it on mommy’s phone at home.

There was a little bit of ironic timing after sharing my love for essential oils this week. Little Man came home needing his head checked for lice this week after an outbreak in his class. Let’s just say we took to google and I’m loving the advice in this article. We mixed up a few spray bottles of essential oils. Now we just hope it all stays away.

If I had to pick a favorite season I would have to pick Fall. Don’t get me wrong I will savor every minute of Summer before it ends. Yet when it comes to favorites Fall wins out. For the last few years there has been a new trend showing up on Facebook and some of my favorite social networks. Essential Oils. I’ve been iffy about them. We don’t burn candles in our house that often because I am the only one who likes the smell. At work we’ve been hit or miss on people complaining. All and all, I’ve wanted to try essential oils but was afraid to make the commitment.

This summer I finally decided to make the leap and purchased my starter kit from Young Living.

What Are Essential Oils?

I guess we should back up here. What exactly are essential oils?

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert. In fact, I’m pretty far from it. I’ve been learning as I go and it’s been an incredible journey.

In the most basic terms out there, essential oils are the main oils extracted from a plant. Sounds simple right? Technically it’s not quite that easy and there are many oils out there that claim to be pure that really aren’t. The oils themselves have a number of health (and spiritual) benefits and have actually been used for an incredibly long time.

Essential oils can be used for pain relief, stress relief, meditation, relaxation, allergy relief, etc. Chances are there is an oil for just about anything you need.

Do Essential Oils Really Work?

Honestly, I wouldn’t be writing this post if they didn’t. I only write about products I believe in and essential oils have become a large part of my evening routines at home.

My main reason for finally trying the essential oils was the fact that Baby B and I were fighting allergies this spring. He was too young to start allergy medication, vapor rub wasn’t working and we were not sleeping very well at all. A co-worker made us a rollerball to test out an allergy blend.

You guys. It worked.

We rolled a little bit on both of his feet and he was breathing so much better as we went to bed at night. We’ve used and refilled the rollerball a few times this summer and it has been a wonderful solution for the allergy season that never seems to end.

Some nights we add a little extra push to the allergy relief with an allergy relief diffuser blend as well. It doesn’t smell too strong and has really helped clear the air before bedtime.

That was just one example of how well they worked.

I’ve always heard that lavender in general is great for headaches. Lately I’ve been running into them more often than not with the Fall weather creeping in. I started diffusing 3 drops of Lavender along with my other favorite 2 drop of Peace and Calming while I clean up the kitchen at night. If it doesn’t take care of my headache by the time I go to bed, I move the diffuser next to the bed for a little bit.

It really does work. I’m not completely crazy. We also turn the same blend on in the diffuser sometimes to just settle down after a busy night. On nights where things are a little bit more crazy we’ll add an extra drop of each oil.

My Favorite Essential Oils

I’m pretty bad at choosing favorites, but when it comes to essential oils I’ve very quickly found my go to oils.

• Lavender – Not only does it smell nice but it helps with headaches and settling down at night.
• RC – My favorite for allergy relief. Baby B has made use of this many times this summer.
• Peace and Calming – I once heard that mom’s swear by this essential oil and I can see why. I always feel relaxed after we start diffusinng it.
• Purification – My favorite to diffuse when we are cleaning. The smell just feels so clean.

How Do I Try Them?

I’m glad you asked! Here’s the thing about essential oils, you need a diffuser and GOOD oils. We have a few knock off brands we’ve used at work and they really aren’t the same. The smell is a little too strong and they just don’t work.

Young Living is by far one of THE MOST respected companies out their. The price tag might look expensive but it has been worth every penny.

The best way to get started with essential oils? Purchase the starter kit from Young Living. Not only does it come with a diffuser but you also get the 11 most common oils that you would need at a CRAZY discounted rate.

I was hesitant at first but I’ve made use of (almost) all of the oils on a regular basis since purchasing the kit. When it comes to using the diffuser it is HANDS DOWN better than the cheap one I bought off of amazon just to test things out.

I’m not going to lie, I already want to add another diffuser to our collection soon.

I’m pretty sure every time I blink another month goes by. While I’m not on board with the Christmas trees in the stores yet (I’m looking at you Costco) I definitely feel like that time of the year is very quickly approaching.

For now I am incredibly excited about October. The weather is always my favorite, the colors are beautiful and we finally can settle into a routine again. Little Man has been playing baseball and I have zero complaints about the colors of the sunset as we leave the fields each night. They are simply amazing.

Yesterday was my birthday and we celebrated by having cannoli for dessert because why not? Let’s do a little but if “currently” to catch up what else is going on in life!

When it comes to life I am currently…

Sad About: Our local coffee shop near my office just closed last week. Over the last 10 months I’ve spent a lot of time blogging there.

Looking Forward To: Weekend walks with the boys. We miss out on them during the week because it gets dark so fast but the weekends are the perfect time!

Loving: The leaves changing colors.

Diffusing: the different Halloween blends @GrapefruitAndGold posted this week. Yesterday we broke out the Candy Corn blend at work, it smelled delicious. There are so many new essential oils I need to add to my collection.

When it comes to food I am currently….

Excited to Make: Racheal Ray’s Uptown Down-Home Chili. Every year it is a favorite in our house.

Weekend Drinking: Almond Rocha Lattes (Big shock, I know).

Almost Ready to Start Drinking: Caramel Apple Cider. I just can’t bring myself to buy a gallon of it yet! We did take a trip to the apple orchard with Little Man’s class. It was a lot of fun and he learned a lot!

Laughing About: When my husband asked Little Man what kind of cupcakes I wanted for my birthday “vanilla” got lost in translation. They came home with a package of homemade vanilla cannoli for dessert. There were no complaints here as we ate them pretty quick.

When it comes to health I am currently…

Running: About 5 days a week. I’ve been averaging around 30 miles a week but looking to slowly increase that this month. I shocked myself at the end of September when I added up my miles, 129!

Lifting: Sadly only once a week. Little Man and I still get our exercises in but right now we try for the weekends.

Trying: I’m all about trying new things and my sister-in-law lead us in some meditation las week. It was a completely different experience and I loved it!

Mom life is the best life. It truly is. There are days where I feel on top of the world and there are days where it’s the exact opposite. It happens. Life happens. Somehow our busy summer has carried over into Fall. From Tball to Lularoe to birthday’s September has been eventful. I’m not complaining because it’s been fun but after dinner last night I had to sit in the kitchen and just laugh at myself. There was mom guilt and text messages to a friend full of mommy confessions.

It seemed like a good time to introduce a new series to the blog… appropriately named Mommy confessions.

 Up First In Mommy Confessions… It’s Okay to Give In

When I was pregnant with Little Man I swore up and down he would have very limited iPad and TV time. We can all laugh now knowing how that one really went. With Baby B he is still a little young to understand TV or the iPad but we steer him away from it as much as possible.

This week he’s been waking up during my run time. Typically I’ll cut my runs short or do a different exercise but yesterday was day two in a row of having to really cut my run short. I remembered that I had an episode of Sesame Street on my iPad and I turned it on while he was in his bouncer away from the treadmill.

We now have an Elmo fan in the house.

It happens. He’ll be okay.

Sometimes You Just Have To Indulge

Typically I try and eat healthy. For the most part we try and serve fairly balanced meals as well to the boys. This isn’t always an every day thing and I’ll admit lately we’ve been lacking in the creative dinner department. They still get their vegetables and plenty of fruit on a daily basis though. Personally I have a huge sweet tooth so we keep most sweets out of the house, other than popsicles.

I’ve struggled to get back on track recently with my healthier eating. Meal planning has been lacking and actually shopping the weekend before has not been happening. My energy is down and I know that I need to get the healthy train going again.

A few weeks ago we had one of those weekends where it was ALL BIRTHDAY ALL WEEKEND. We had 4 different birthdays to celebrate over the course of three days. The celebrations started Friday and ended Sunday night. I told myself that I was going to stay away from all of the goodies.

The first two days I made it. There was pizza involved but it was minor compared to how it could’ve ended if I jumped on the cake. By Sunday night I couldn’t take it anymore. I made a giant ice cream sundae complete with a cupcake, m&ms, crunch & sprinkles.

Seriously, no regrets.

Baby Number 2 Mommy Confessions

Everyone always says you care less about the milestones for Baby Number 2. In some ways I can see how that is true, but at the same time I’ve been excited to celebrate as many of Baby B’s milestones as I was for Little Man.

There has been one difference.

I’m 100% OKAY if he doesn’t hit them on the same timeline or even a recommended timeline.

When it comes to walking Baby B has taken his time. Last week we finally had our first steps, just shy of 13 months old. He will walk a few steps here and there but for the most part he is a crawling machine.

He’ll get there.

I never thought we would see the day Little Man was potty trained and it happened…eventually.

Mommy Confessions Number 4… Cool Moms Listen To Kidsbop

Last week we rolled up to preschool with the speakers on full blast and the Kidsbop version of HandClap playing. I had Little Man dancing (with a batman mask on), Baby B singing along and smiles all around. Gone are the days of Pop2k. It’s all about Kidsbop now.

Our kids love music. We love that they love music.

There are days, I can’t take their music anymore.

One of the best purchases we made about a year and a half ago was a bluetooth speaker. Spotify premium, the speaker and a basement full of toys is one of Little Man’s favorite pastimes.

The best part… I don’t have to hear his playlist over and over again. Before we left for vacation we picked him up a cheap pair of bluetooth headphones.

Second best investment ever made.

So last night we had pancakes and peas for dinner.

True story.

When it comes “to go to meals” pancakes is always a good one for us. My husband had a late night at work and I failed miserably in the meal planning department this week (for the fourth week in a row). When we got home I offered up pancakes for dinner.

Mom guilt set in with the high amount of carbs and lack of anything healthy. I decided we needed a few veggies to go with our dinner. Little Man got to pick what vegetables he wanted. This week his favorite vegetable is peas.

So last night we had pancakes and peas for dinner.

Everyone ate their entire dinner, drank their milk and blasted out their dance moves to Kidsbop before bed.

Long ago when we found out that Little Man was a boy, I thought for sure that the fun of shopping for clothes was out the window. As it turns out, shopping for boys is really fun. Not to mention, there is less of a chance that what they want to wear is inappropriate. Have you been through the girls section lately? Clothes is one of those instances where I’m happy to be a boy mom.

The downside to Fall fashion for boys is typically the cute clothes are expensive and chances are the boys will come home with at least one nice outfit ruined. Playgrounds are rough, jeans get holes and shirts wind up with stains. As I started to piece together different outfits for Little Man I wanted to come up with something cute but cheap.

Fall Fashion For Boys – Tops

I’ve been known to hit up the Jumping Beans section fairly regularly at Kohls. But when it comes to Fall fashion for boys I also want to make sure they have a few nicer shirts to wear. It never hurts to dress them a little nicer a few days a week. As kids they can pull off simple long sleeve shirts but there are also some adorable plaid shirts in style this year.

Fall Fashion For Boys – Pants & Shoes

As for pants, Little Man would prefer to either not wear any or wear “soft pants”. Typically we have a debate about wearing jeans because they’re not soft. This year I only bought one or two pair to get us through the dress up days. His opinion on Fall fashion for boys? PJs.

He typically goes through about one pair of sneakers a season so I like to have a dress pair and a sports pair on hand. This year we even added in baseball shoes. After looking through so many shoes online I could buy 15 pair and still find another pair of cute ones. The shoe Fall fashion for boys is simply adorable this year!

The reality of it all is that Little Man is also growing fast. Chances are we’ll get through Fall and maybe some of Winter before having to jump to the next size. I’m hoping that we can pull it out until Spring when he’ll need shorts anyways!

Summer is officially over. As excited as I am about a Salted Caramel Mocha (not the PSL), I’m going to hang onto the idea of fresh fruits and vegetables as much as humanly possible for another few weeks. These last few weeks we’ve been using fresh herbs and tomatoes in as many meals as possible. I mixed together a new fresh salsa recipe. We’ve had it a few times now and I HAVE to share it with you.

I’ll be honest, as much as many people want Fall to hit the weather has other plans. It is 90 degrees outside so it feels like a great weekend for some Summer food including fresh salsa.

Fresh or Canned Tomatoes?

Over Labor Day weekend my mom and I set out to can a bushel of tomatoes. She showed me the tricks of the trade and we came up with 14 quarts and 4 pints of tomatoes. I think it is safe to say that we’re set for awhile. We followed this tutorial and it only took us 3-4 hours total. My list of things to can is now a mile long but for now I’m going to enjoy using the tomatoes.

Typically speaking I cook with tomatoes in a can from the store. I’m pretty excited for the next few months (18 months to be exact) to be able to cook with tomatoes soaked in just lemon juice. Less salt, less preservatives and I know exactly where the tomatoes came from. Well sort of.

Fresh Salsa Recipe

Over the Summer months I typically make Salsa once or twice. A friend gave me some ideas a few years ago on how to put together a basic fresh salsa recipe. From there I’ve switched it up and added various ingredients. We will have it for taco night, a summer party or just to snack on in the evenings. As delicious as fresh salsa is, you definitely have to buy good chips to go with it.

I’ve tweaked it here and there but this Summer is by far my favorite version. My husband’s Uncle gave us some fresh herbs and chili peppers from his garden at the end of August. The peppers were the PERFECT addition to the fresh salsa recipe. They added a little bit of spice, but not too much. For a lighter flavor leave out a pepper or two.

It only takes a few minutes and is great for taco night, dinner with friends or a snack to go with your evening margarita.

While I typically am a morning person, I rely on coffee to make me an afternoon and evening person. It’s no secret I love my coffee. Take a look at my desk and you will quickly notice that I also love to collect coffee mugs. Some are memories from a great vacation, others are just funny coffee mugs that made me laugh. Don’t expect me to pick the most practical mug out there I tend to stick to the funny coffee mugs.

My wish list grows almost daily and I am constantly on the hunt for more coffee mugs. Many would consider it a problem, I consider it a good problem to have. Are you in need of a gift for a friend? Don’t worry, chances are at least one of these is relevant.

Another staple in the funny coffee mugs line is the reference to mommy and her swear words. Be honest, Every Great Mom Says the F Word probably applied to you as a mom at some point.

Sometimes you just have to make sure that no one messes with mom before she has had her coffee. Everyone should be good to go once she gets to the bottom of the first cup.  Now breakfast can be served.

It’s also a staple funny coffee mug but every mom has the best super power there is. I don’t really think anyone would argue with you if you carried this mug around.

If We Were Having Coffee…

I would tell you about how much fun we had at the Popcorn Festival last weekend. The parade was WAY too long but the rest of the morning was wonderful. It started out with a beautiful sunrise and was a lot of fun getting some steps in as well as racing. The full recap is coming soon.

While sipping on our coffee, I would tell you about 4 year old t-ball. It’s pretty hilarious… have you ever seen 9 kids pile on each other trying to get to a baseball? I highly recommend it for entertainment. Little Man is loving it and I’m having a great time seeing him work with daddy on the field.

We would probably talk about the fact that Baby B turned one a few weeks ago. Time truly does fly. His birthday party was filled with Dr. Seuss themed decorations as well as the most awesome smash cake I’ve ever seen. So much love to one of my good friends for doing the cake.

As we detox from the month of August and all of the sweets we ate, I’m looking forward to continuing to get back on track with weight loss and running. Yesterday I had a 9 mile run on the treadmill and it felt fantastic. The Ultimate Healthy Living bundle comes out next week and from what I can see it is a DON’T MISS bundle. My bundle collection is growing faster than I can read them all. They are all so wonderful.

While We Were Drinking Our Coffee I Would Probably Tell You About…

I’ve been trying to get my camera back out more often lately. I’m REALLY bad about getting pictures off of the camera but I am constantly reminded about how much I love taking the time to take pictures. After a photoshoot with a friend a few weeks ago I’ve been trying to make the point to take more pictures, but not necessarily with my phone.

Speaking of cameras. We got the pictures back from my friends wedding a few weeks ago and I love them so much. Little Man looks so grown up and the whole ceremony was just beautiful. Massive props to her photographer Sweetness and Light Photography for the wonderful pictures..

Little Man and I went on a field trip yesterday to the apple orchard. Lately he and I haven’t had as much one on one time together and it was absolutely wonderful. We picked apples, road a tractor, learned about bees and ran around for awhile. I’m pretty sure we both agreed that the best part was the apple cider donuts though.

On the weekends lately we’ve been trying to sneak a few trips to the coffee shop in for some donuts. Last weekend Baby B got to have his first donut… it is safe to say it definitely will not be his last. There is not much that kid won’t eat.

Little Man loves to help me bake. Usually around this time of the year I find us spending more and more time in the kitchen. One of his favorite things to bake is muffins.
