The DC Dept. of General Services (DGS) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design and construction of a flexible structure on the St Elizabeths East campus to serve a wide range of interim uses and allow visitors to experience the site before redevelopment is complete.

Envisioned as a destination for casual dining, as well as a venue for hosting a farmers' market and other weekend and afterhours, community, cultural and arts events, the Gateway Pavilion will host a number of small vendors/food stalls, food trucks and other mobile vendors, shared seating for patrons, and support facilities including storage and restroom spaces.

The Gateway Pavilion will aim to serve as an interim - believed to be 2 to 5 years - heart of the East Campus, drawing pedestrian traffic from the West Campus, the Congress Heights neighborhood, and the adjacent Congress Heights Metro station.

First it was the Washington Highlands library. Then it was the Bellevue library. Then it was the William O. Lockridge Library at Bellevue. Now it’s the Bellevue library again. But it’s not likely to stay that way long.

The monthslong saga over the naming of a new $15 million D.C. Public Library branch in far Southwest has deepened, weeks ahead of a scheduled ribbon-cutting. The library’s board of trustees voted last Wednesday to undo a D.C. Council vote naming the facility after Lockridge, a community activist and school board member who died in January 2011.
That vote goes against the wishes of Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D), whovoiced support for the Lockridge naming shortly after his death, and the D.C. Council, which voted in December to overturn the board’s previous choice of Bellevue and add Lockridge’s name.

Biking Journal Day 5 | Garber as my witness, it really wasn't my fault

I was driving downtown with David Garber when a bicyclist darted in front of my car after the traffic light for my lane had turned green. To be fair, the bicyclist (cute by the way) felt bad and waved apologetically. After I recovered from my mini heart attack, I commented to David that my biking journal would have gotten a lot more interesting if I ran over a cyclist. Really glad everything turned out okay because I am not entirely confident David would have testified on my behalf at the trial.

My First Bike Shop: Capitol Hill Bikes

On the way to rewarding myself with a frozen yogurt for not committing vehicle manslaughter, I popped into a Capitol Hill Bikes on Barracks Row. This was my first time in a bike shop but I suppose it is never too early to get measured for a bike. While I was there, checked out some padded shorts and bike helmets. I was a little surprised at the cost for the shorts ($50-$100) but I suppose you don't want to skimp when it comes to preserving your lady-bits.

The funny thing is that I don't think there is a bike shop in all of Ward 8 (I could be wrong) but I walked less than 20 feet from Capitol Hill Bikes and found myself in front of City Bikes. Barracks Row sure must love their bikes. I think if Ward 8 had even one bike shop we would love bikes too. Going to check out City Bikes when I have the chance.

Walking, its conveniently located approximately 15 mins from Courthouse Metro and 20 mins from Rosslyn Metro and the Circulator, which takes you right into Georgetown and Dupont Circle. Its about 12 mins from Safeway and 20 mins from the Giant off of Lee Hwy and Whole Foods in Clarendon. Address below is approximate...will provide actual address once we schedule you to come by.

You would be getting the larger of the two bedrooms (approx. 140 sq ft), which has a large closet. The living room is open and airy, having a cathedral ceiling with skylights. Well appointed kitchen with granite counter-tops, dishwasher, etc. Laundry facilities are in the apartment (in my room), which is a huge plus. Comes with a parking pass for reserved parking behind the building, which I don't need so it's all yours! Verizon FIOS service...currently TV and internet but I may cut the TV after my current housemate moves out, but we can discuss if you would like to keep. Utilities run approx. $50/person.

About me...I am an early 30's male professional who works 15 mins away at a USAID contractor...hence my love for this location. RPCV and did my undergrad on the West Coast so I am quite chill and relaxed. Somewhat of a homebody on the weekdays but running around, mostly to DC, on weekends for community volunteering and other activities. I am eco-conscious and do expect that prospective housemates be willing to assist with recycling, etc. Prefer a mature, conscious and drama-free person...preferably male. Finally, I have a cat.

Addendum to Biking Journal Day 1 | "They were on sale"

I forgot to include this little nugget in my first post about getting back on the bike after 20 years.

If anyone thinks they do not have the athletic prowess or knowledge to get on a bike take it from me, if I can do it anyone can do it.

ADDENDUM to Day 1 of my journal:

After dropping my loaner bike at home I headed straight to my LUMEN8 pop-up in my "special" bike riding gear (LUMEN8Anacostia t-shirt + sweat pants). After I set my space up, I went to visit the pop-up next door. The following conversation was between me and the other pop-up operator who is a friend. I swear I did not make this conversation up. It actually happened. I really am this clueless when it comes to sports.

Him: "So what did you do today?"

Me: "WABA had this free bike clinic in my neighborhood and while I was there I rode a bike for the first time in two decades. Kind of cool."

Him: "Look at you! Cycling and you play soccer!"

Me: *blank stare* "What?"

Him: "Your shoes."

Me: *looks at sneakers* "What about them? I just got them"

Him: "Umm, they have cleats."

Me: "Is that what they are? I just thought they were cute -- and they were on sale."

Him: *bursts into laughter* "Well they are cute."

In hindsight that explained ANC Commissioner Dionne Brown commenting on my "special shoes" at the WABA repair clinic.

Proof positive that I'm really "special." ;)

Biking Journal Day 4 | The 3 Wise Men

MORNING
On the way to the car this morning Mr. Casey, 85 years young, commented on my recent bike riding. He told me about how much he enjoyed riding his bike until he gave it away a few years ago. I don't know if there is an age limit on bike riding but I encouraged him to get back in the saddle seat again.

NOON
One of my co-workers is still a little surly someone stole his bike seat last week. To discourage more seat-napping he is parking his bike indoors. I'm just baffled someone would steal a bike let along parts of a bike. What is the point? To steal enough pieces of a bike to assemble one complete bike? Are there bike chop shops? Is there really a market for sweat stained bike seats? Weird.

TWILIGHT
Took a break from pouring over receipts to ride around the neighborhood. I have to admit I am more likely to get on the bike than to go downstairs to the gym (go figure). Fourth straight day of not falling, happy to have the skin on my knees and elbows intact. Still in desperate need of padded shorts. Will make a point to get a pair this weekend before I head back out to Anacostia Park. While I am at it will scope out a bike helmet, can't risk injuring my brilliant blogger brain on these mean DC streets.

During my evening ride I ran into the "three wise men," a group of elderly gentlemen who keep the neighborhood spiffy between busting each other's chops and chain smoking cigars. As they saw me huffing (and I mean huffing hard) up the hill they called out some encouragement. They even went so far as to tease they were going to bring their bikes out and join me.

Something about the idea of the three wise men riding bikes while chain smoking cigars made me laugh. I would pay good money to see that.

I would even ge them some padded shorts. :)

For more than 150 years, Anacostia has been home to some of the most significant changes in the District’s history. From the opening ofSt. Elizabeths Hospital in 1855 to the escalating violence and drug use that ravaged the area in the 1990s, the neighborhood has witnessed it all. Now, this history is being illustrated in an unusual way: at a local art exhibit called “Anacostia In Fashion,” where clothing designer Brian Evans has created a five-piece showcase documenting the evolution of the neighborhood through interpretative fashion.

The Jewish Museum of Belgium showed a retrospective of the painter's work from the past decade. The exhibition included over 70 of the artists paintings March 9th through May 27, 2012.

Biking Journal Day 3 | vaseline + padded pants

Taking a break at the Anacostia Skate Pavillion

Since my "inaugural" ride on Saturday I've been giving this biking thing an honest try. Three bike rides over three days and I'm still interested in riding. Every day I am getting a little more confident and capable. Who knew that because of a WABA free bike repair clinic I would be rediscovering the joy of biking?

That being said, I have learned a few things:

Bike people are nice people. Not only am I using a borrowed bike but when my neighbor spotted me riding around she offered me the use of her helmet. Living in world where people almost never share their things it is pretty cool that folks are so encouraging and helpful. My neighbor also gave me some good (if not slightly weird) advise, "vaseline is your friend for long bike rides."

Hoodies don't make for good seat cushions. Sitting on your hoodie while riding may slightly ease the discomfort of a bike seat (ouch!), but is not recommended. If said hoodie should get caught up in the bike chain you can find yourself the wrong side up on the pavement. (Another piece of advice from my neighbor.)

Black women do indeed bike. In riding around my neighborhood I discovered two black women who bike and they were excited (and frankly surprised) when I told them there was a group for black women who bike. Because of that exchange I am putting them in touch with Miss V to get their black girl bike on.

Fix Or Ride Daily (FORD). A bike can fit in the backseat of a Ford compact but it really isn't ideal.

I need padded shorts ASAP. Good news: I went out on my own to look for a pair. Bad News: I came back with some platform stilettos and some sunglasses. After trying on my new kicks, I asked my co-worker for some direction (and not to a shoe store). She recommended Target, City Sports, or a bike store for a some padded shorts.

I can change gears. I don't know how I did it but I can.

People east of the Anacostia do ride bikes. I rode through Anacostia Park today and I saw a lot of black people riding bikes. To be fair, I didn't see any BikeShare bikes but there were a lot of people riding bikes.

The Anacostia Skate Pavilion is pretty boss. I am almost ashamed to say that in the 5+ years I have lived in Ward 8 I never paid a visit to the skating rink in Anacostia Park. Today I did and it was pretty cool. I will definitely go there again -- and I will bike to get there. :)

WABA takes me on a ride -- AND I LOVE IT!

Many thanks to the wonderful people over at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) for holding a free bike repair clinic in Congress Heights today. For four hours the WABA team helped riders of all ages, skill levels, and economic means get their bikes road worthy. It was very heartwarming to see so many people united through their love of biking. I was particularly touched to see my 65 year old neighbor get so excited to have her bike (which had been sitting unused for over 30 years) repaired. She really can't wait to get back on the road.

For me, today was particularly special. After a twenty year hiatus WABA actually got me on a bike! To be honest, at first I was a little terrified but it really was like ... riding a bike! After lending me his wife's bike (thanks!) and literally sizing me up (a bike seat should be at the same level as the top of your fanny). WABA Executive Director Shane Farthing provided me with a helmet (smart man) and some important advice, "This is how you brake."

After giggling like a school girl I took a deep breath and pushed off on my toes. Before you know it, I was riding! I may be a 35 year old woman but for those first few minutes I felt like a school girl and let me tell you, it was pretty amazing.

So after a few practice runs up and down the sidewalk Shane took me on a ride around the block. After I got over my fear of ~~running~~ riding into something I really had a great time. I could see myself doing this. And thanks to the loaner bike provided by Shane's lovely wife (and kick-ass bike mechanic) I can go on more rides and build my confidence. I am happy to say I already started practicing this afternoon. I had a ball riding around my neighborhood. Once I got really confident I even made a U-turn! I am sooooooo bad-ass. :)

I am really looking forward to reacquainting myself with biking and my ultimate goal is to ride a bike from my home in Congress Heights to my office in Anacostia. Stay tuned while I document my journey to do just that. Already I have made plans to go bike riding with some of my Ward 8 neighbors. If I can accomplish my bike to work goal I can really see myself investing in a bike of my own.

Until then, introducing The Advocate, another black woman who bikes!

WABA does really great work and can use all of our support. Think of it this way, a small donation is well worth the cost of admission to see me on a bike. I can guarantee you that one day I will fall and it will be hilarious.

How it works: My blog is small business as of this year!!! The Cherry Tea (charity) aspect comes in with my profits. What I make over expenses I donate to local food banks. Sometimes it's a little, sometimes it's a lot but it's always an adventure.

Jewelry Workshop

Art instructor, author, and jewelry designer Kathleen Manning of Beadazzled will lead this first of three workshops. The focus will be on multi-strand necklaces using semi-precious stones. A minimum of 8 participants is needed for the class to be held. Registration fee is $75.00 with your own tools. Registration fee, including tools, is $100.00.
