"The Great Whirlwind: The Impact of the War of 1812 on the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations)"
Rick Hill, Tuscarora, Oral Historian and Chairperson, Six Nations Legacy Consortium, Six Nations Grand River Territory, Ontario
Oral historian Rick Hill will examine the involvement of the Grand River, Buffalo Creek and Tuscarora communities on both sides of the border, as they were torn by conflicting Covenant Chain loyalties to the Crown and the President. He will tell the story through a series of wampum belts associated with the war, and the written accounts of council meetings where these divided loyalties were played out. In the end, the Haudenosaunee used their ancient protocols to heal the wounds of war and become one people.

"Earthshaking History: Tecumseh, the Red Stick Creeks, and the South"

Several legends concerning Tecumseh have found their way into our histories of the war of 1812, which cast doubt upon aspects of events that occurred during and immediately after his tour of the South in 1811. These include the role of eclipses, comets, and earthquakes in history; his anger at Tenskwatawa for the battle of Tippecanoe, and the decline of the Shawnee Prophet's influence following that battle.

“War of 1812: Indian Perspectives in the Old Northwest”

In the Old Northwest Territory this war was primarily an Indian war. After European arrival in the Great Lakes area, a complex set of relationships arose among the French, the English, and indigenous tribes. The dynamics of the relationships were shaped by confrontation and/or confederation and the roots of this war can be seen as early as the 1750s. As pressure for greater land cessions grew, the tribes did not acquiesce without a struggle.

The Chicago Maritime Festival is an international gathering to celebrate Chicago's maritime community. It is an event organized by Common Times in partnership with the Chicago History Museum, and the Chicago Maritime Museum. Filled to the brim with his trademark humor and visual and technological brilliance, this off-the-wall masterpiece by Canadian theater visionary Robert Lepage stars Yves Jacques (Far Side of the Moon) in a one-man tour-de-force about a Canadian writer from the rock-and-roll milieu who is unexpectedly commissioned by the Opera Garnier in Paris to write a libretto for a children’s opera. Arriving in Paris, he finds that his living quarters for the next three months, which he acquired through an apartment swap with a friend, are in a building that is also home to a peep show in the city’s red light district. Freely inspired by the timeless fables written by Hans Christian Andersen who, as it turns out, didn’t really like children, as well as anecdotes from his personal diaries, The Andersen Project keenly explores unraveling relationships, personal demons, the thirst for recognition, and compromise that comes too late. The NORAD Arctic Policy Forum will take place Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Voth Hall in the Alaska Center for Performing Arts, Anchorage. When electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008, she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream. Her name may have been pluralized but Lights Poxleitner was a one-woman show who played and programmed her own instruments and sang her own lyrics.

Lyrically, Siberia is light years from her last, which was written when the singer, who spent much of her childhood travelling to... places like the Philippines and Jamaica with her missionary parents, had left the nest and landed in Toronto. “A lot of those songs came from a sad but hopeful place. I was alone and pondering a lot. I’m a lot more aware of the person I am now and each of these songs is about an experience I’ve gone through,” she says. “This record came from a very happy place.”

Siberia‘s beats skitter and thwack, the retro electronics fire like decomposing lasers and the analog synths dirty up her trademark pretty melodies, propelling Lights’ emotion-soaked but still-cute croon into her sprawling, imperfect new sound.

Call it anti-electro, dream-step or perhaps even grit-pop. Whatevs. Just rest assured that it’s the same bright Lights; she’s just built herself a bigger city.

From the Canadian Museum of Making, comes an exhibition of Akan gold weights. Prior to the 20th century most people engaging in commerce and the trade of gold in Ghana, particularly the Akan people, owned scales and a set of small, decorated weights to conduct business. Though identified as gold, they were actually a copper alloy whose forms developed from simple geometric shapes to complex figurative sculptures.

We will be hosting a free day in conjunction with this exhibition on Saturday February 11.

Human Landscape Dance will present Greek myths that have been integrated into our upbringing, including an Odyssey that emphasizes Penelope's experience. Nova Scotian Susan Cook will dance her solo exploration of “My Favorite Things,” questioning the feminine stereotypes that underlie the song. Dance expert Karen Bradley will contribute an essay on her search for the American Dream, and finding it in Canada.

TROY JOLLIMORE is the author of two books of poetry, At Lake Scugog (2011) and Tom Thomson in Purgatory (2006), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. He is also the author of a philosophical monograph, Love's Vision (2011). His writings have appeared in The New Yorker, McSweeney's, The Believer, Poetry Magazine, and elsewhere. JOHN KOETHE has published eight books of poems, including Falling Water (1977), which received the Kingsley Tufts Award, and Ninety-Fifth Street (2009), which received the Lenore Marshall Prize from the Academy of American Poets. He is also the author of two philosophy books, The Continuity of Wittgenstein’s Thought and Scepticism, Knowledge, and Forms of Reasoning, and a book of essays, Poetry at One Remove. He has received Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, and a Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Three of the band's members - singer Margo Timmins; songwriter, producer and guitarist Michael Timmins; and drummer Peter Timmins - are siblings, and bassist Alan Anton has been a member since the group formed in Toronto in 1985. Few bands have lasted nearly as long with their original line-up intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work. Albums like The Trinity Session (1988), Black Eyed Man (1992), Miles From Our Home (1988) and Early 21st Century Blues (2005), to isolate just a few high points, chronicle a creative journey that is impervious to trends. Each of those albums sounds as fresh and current today as when it was made. You don't stay together and produce work of that quality and depth without learning something about family and permanence - what lasts, what doesn't, perhaps even what shouldn't. But if their history is an important part of what led the band to At the End of Paths Taken, other factors entered in as well. "My idea was to write an album about families, about how generations affect generations, how there's a continuum," Michael says. "I'm the father of three young kids, and I've got aging parents, so that's obviously a big part of my life. But I found that what was going on in the outside world was affecting my writing. These times are extremely trying. What sort of world is being set up for my kids? All of that began to brew together." The result is an album that takes family as a starting point, but goes on to look at the vast range of people's responsibilities to and for each other. "Songs like 'Still Lost' and 'Blue Eyed Saviour' are ultimately about any parent and their kids, about sending them out into the world and having no clue where that journey will take them," Michael says. On "Mountain," Margo's vocal interweaves with a recording of their father, a successful aviation salesman, reading a passage about their family from a book he recently completed about his life.

Quebec's Galant, tu perds ton temps draws in its audience with tales from the oral tradition and a capella folk songs brimming with colorful harmonies and intricate lyrics.

The group brings together five women and a percussionist around a repertoire of traditional songs. The only form of accompaniment comes from foot tapping, bodhran, jig or occasionally, a suitcase. Lyrics are pushed in the forefront in order to draw the audience's attention to the stories they tell — stories that have been handed down through oral traditions.

The group Vishtèn was formed in Prince Edward Island, in the Canadian Maritimes, at the beginning of the new millennium by traditional Acadian musicians/dancers Pastelle and Emmanuelle LeBlanc. Vishtèn's music is a hardy mixture of the French, Irish and Scottish styles of Eastern Canada, with fiery fiddling and powerful step dancing taking front and center. Their stage show re-creates the joy and energy of the "kitchen party," the informal community gatherings where all are welcomed to sing, play and dance.
