I just came across this funny video from The Onion.

It's a great satire on the whole outsourcing boom that has been taking place since the release of books like "The 4-Hour Workweek ".

Thankfully, they don't use the dreaded term "virtual assistant", which is, in reality, an impossibility until such time that the prophesized "singularity" occurs.

That being, of course, the dawn of genuine artificial intelligence.

You can read my rant, er, article on the proper term for outsourced staff by clicking on the link a few words back.

Enjoy the video.

PS: Sorry about the 15-second Palm Pixie trailer…

OK, enough is enough!

For several years now I’ve seen and heard hundreds of marketers refer to their outsourced staff as "virtual assistants" or "VA’s".

But in reality, that term is completely incorrect!

Think about it, what does the term "virtual" mean?

Well, Webopedia defines it as:

"Not real. The term virtual is popular among computer scientists and is used in a wide variety of situations. In general, it distinguishes something that is merely conceptual from something that has physical reality.

For example, virtual memory refers to an imaginary set of locations, or addresses, where you can store data. It is imaginary in the sense that the memory area is not the same as the real physical memory composed of transistors. The difference is a bit like the difference between an architect’s plans for a house and the actual house. A computer scientist might call the plans a virtual house.

Another analogy is the difference between the brain and the mind. The mind is a virtual brain. It exists conceptually, but the actual physical matter is the brain."

So, do all these marketers have "not real" or "conceptual" assistants? No, I don’t think that’s it.

How can any of us employ an imaginary assistant?

We can’t (at least for now), plain and simple.

But what we CAN do is employ a REMOTE ASSISTANT, or RA, can’t we?

Yes, that’s right, a genuine flesh and blood human being. Not some imaginary construct of a non-physical "person" who does our menial work for us.

So, why not start today using accurate terms and accurate thinking?

From now on, how about using the term REMOTE ASSISTANT to replace the ridiculously incorrect Virtual Assistant?

And while I’m on the subject, I’m reminded of a term that Mark Joyner termed to describe the viral growth rate of marketing campaigns – COPULATION rate.

Guess what Mark, that’s a really bad (and incorrect) use of the English language.

In his defense, Mark did admit that he would have preferred a better word, but that’s what he came up with.

The definition of copulation is: Sexual intercourse.

I’m guessing that if you’re reading this, you well know that sexual intercourse doesn’t necessarily produce offspring.

And that’s what Mark was shooting for with the term copulation – the production of offspring.

In this case, an exponential (or viral) explosion of growth in an email list or other marketing campaign.

In other words, the term he chose doesn’t center-in on the key principle he was trying to identify and define – exponential growth.

Some better word choices would have been: propagation, proliferation, replication, duplication, X-factor, etc., etc.

The only reason I can think of that a guy as smart as Mark would purposely choose an incorrect term like copulation is…

SEX SELLS!

Yep, even sexual terms like copulation.

And since Mark is a master marketer, I’d prefer to think it was a deliberate decision, rather than him simply being lazy.

Either way, I’m a very strong advocate of moving the human race forward, not backward.

And one of the ways I believe we can do that is by using our incredible English language to accurately communicate our thoughts.

In short, I refuse to participate in any form of "The Dumbing Down of America" or any other country, for that matter.

Hopefully you’ll join me and educate the folks you have in your sphere of influence to take the "high road" in their communications.

Let’s face it, there are hundreds, if not thousands of affiliate networks and schemes out there.

And every once in a while, the planets align, the angels sing and something really special is born.

In this case, the aligning planets were a decades-old, super-profitable offline business and the internet.

Enter Chris Bell. He’s been actively buying all sorts of quality used merchandise offline and then reselling it at profit margins into the thousands of percentage points for the last 20 years.

Imagine having the inside connections (and cash flow) that allows you to locate and buy entire households full of furniture for pennies on the dollar. Or even entire hotels worth…

Then imagine having the warehouse space and other infrastructure – including showrooms – to store, display and sell massive amounts of this furniture and other merchandise.

Then, set up an online store that displays and sells your merchandise so you have both an offline and online presence.

Now, if that’s all you did, I think you can see how you’d make tons of money.

And that’s what Chris Bell has done quite well for a long time.

But what if you conceived of an idea for a way to radically expand your venture by inviting "investor affiliates" to join you?

What is an investor affiliate?

Well, aside from not having anything to do with traditional stock and bond type investment programs, investor affiliates differ from traditional affiliates in the following ways:

1. They can join the program for free and are then able to invest a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $500 towards the purchase of merchandise.

2. They receive 10% of the profits from sold merchandise bought with money from their account, PLUS their investment money back.

3. They also receive an additional 10% monthly distribution from profits attained by funding from their account.

4. They also receive 5% of the sales of merchandise from all affiliates they refer to the program (second tier).

So, hopefully the key differences between standard and investor affiliates are clear enough.

investor affiliates essentially can make money two ways.

The first is by investing into the network and letting their capital go to work for them – passively and automatically.

The second is by referring other investor affiliates who join and invest. The referrer gets rewarded with 5% of the profits generated from sales of merchandise funded with the referral’s account.

Here’s a theoretical example from their site:

a. We buy an item for $10.00 and sell it for $100.00.

b. Your initial $10.00 + 10% of the $90 profit is returned to your account for reinvestment ($19).

c. 10% of the profit is added to your monthly payout ($9).

d. 5% of the profit is sent to your designated charity – optional ($4.50).

e. 5% of the profit goes to the person who referred you $4.50).

Just so we’re clear, at the present time, the most they will use from your account for any one purchase is $10, like the example shows.

But they can use multiple $10 amounts from your account to fund the purchase of multiple items/packages.

So, without you doing a thing, your money is multiplying and growing at a rate better than any bank and virtually any other type of investment can pay.

And if you want to ramp things up quite a bit, simply make sure your "bank" is topped off with a full $500 investment and then get busy referring others to the program.

That way, you can use their money passively too, rather than just your own – at 5% per referred affiliate. And that’s just smart business!

I think what I like most about this program is that everyone wins – the folks who are selling the furniture and merchandise to Chris and his company, the investor affiliates, their referrals, the end buyers of this still heavily discounted property, and of course, the network itself.

Recently, in wanting to expand his online business, Chris took on a Vice President. The new VP is a long-time successful internet marketer named David Cheyne.

And with David on board, the internet aspect of Chris’ business, as well as the whole unique investor affiliate program being offered, is taking off like gangbusters.

Most people who have been online for a while have been confronted with offer after offer, only to find that most of them just don’t live up to the hype – in one way or another.

They require lots of time, marketing or technical expertise, more money for adjunct services and often, further investment in the "advanced" package, that tells "the rest of the story".

And when you consider how much money the average wannabe internet marketer spends on ebooks, courses, software and services, usually to get a negligible return on investment, a program like this is a real breath of fresh air.

Instead of spending $77 or $97 over and over again on theoretical or rehashed junk, a single $100 investment and telling a few people about it can continue to grow and pay – PASSIVELY – for years and years!

Of the hundreds of programs I’ve seen, been a member of or heard about, this one is hands down the MOST UNIQUE, MOST PASSIVE and MOST PROFITABLE, when measured against the others for ease of use, monetary investment, time and tech skills required.

And in case you’re wondering, yes, I joined and invested.

And I’ve seen my money grow from $250 to over $300 in a couple of months (during the site’s development phase, mind you).

Just try getting that kind of return from your checking account…

Needless to say, if you’re tired of all the speculative crap out there, this should really get your entrepreneurial juices flowing!

Listen, this isn’t a pie-in-the-sky program that is going to make you rich overnight. But it IS an amazing way to compound your investment into your future.

How many passive income streams do you have right now? How many do you want?

This program is the only one I know of that REALLY and TRULY pays you, the investor affiliates back, consistently, passively, beautifully…

I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but along with all the standard internet marketing products – courses, ebooks and softwares – there is a subset of all these how-to, informational offerings.

This subset of products revolves around the "mindset" and "productivity" genre.

If you’ve bought any comprehensive course, whether a high-ticket, full-on multimedia extravaganza or merely a single $47 dollar ebook about how to make a living online, you would have certainly noticed a chapter or two about the entrepreneurial mindset as well as instruction on various productivity habits.

Maybe you’re even tired of all that stuff by now, since you’ve been subjected to it in the first chapter or two of virtually every "make money online" product you’ve bought.

But you probably also realize why that material is present in almost every product, though the tilt on it is somewhat different with each author.

The reason is simple – unless you develop both the mindset of a business person AND develop solid productivity habits, chances are very good you will fail in your efforts.

Perhaps this is why the statistics consistently say that 95% of all new businesses fail within the first two years?…

Hundreds of successful marketers have surveyed hundreds of thousands of not-yet-successful marketers and there is always one recurring theme:

Lack of focus, lack of a strategy, lack of discipline.

Thus, lack of success, profits, and all the other fruits of their "labor".

The average "newbie" marketer takes from 3 to 5 years to finally settle down and focus on one thing at a time and dedicate themselves to just that.

At that point, they finally start to see things begin to happen for them.

Before that, they were blown this direction and that, by every new product offering and every shiny new tool that would make them rich with a single click.

In other words, they finally wake up and face the reality that there is NO Easy Button, Magic Pill or other panacea that will change their lives overnight.

Ok, so now there are several productivity courses on the market, designed by internet marketers for internet marketers.

Mark Joyner has had Simpleology, Profit Praxes, Desktop Cockpit and other productivity tools online for several years now.

Eben Pagan has his 12-week, $297 "Wake Up Productive" course.

And recently an unknown guy (at least to me) named Jeff Vacek came out with his "Go Be Productive" course (also pretty pricey).

Then Joe Vitale released an audio course on his secret to his prolific writing and productivity.

And there are many more, from a $17 e-report to a full tilt Nightingale Conant physical product.

So, clearly there’s a need to offset all the noise that the average sole proprietor, work-at-home type is bombarded with on a daily basis.

But maybe the average guy or gal doesn’t need a full course on productivity.

Maybe they already understand the whole mindset thing after reading about it in 50 different ebooks and courses.

So finally, someone builds a TOOL to help make all that "book learning" a reality.

Enter The Action Machine.

Here’s a light-weight, configurable tool that allows the work-at-home folks – or really anyone who spends most of their productive time on a computer – to get the maximum bang for their buck.

In short, it’s a superb piece of software that acts as your daily accountability partner.

You input tasks, times for completion and other details and then run the timer for that action.

It helps to keep you focused on what you should be doing and alerts you when the time for that action has elapsed.

It allows you to track your productivity and print out reports, so you can track your progress.

In short, it’s The One Tool Every Internet Marketer Needs!

I grabbed it when it first came out and was quite pleased with it.

But there were some features it didn’t have, so I (and a bunch of other folks) wrote to the author and asked for some additional features to be added.

Within two weeks he had released Version 2 – with all the additional features I had asked for!

I now use it every day and have definitely noticed how I focus on ONE THING AT A TIME now, instead of being constantly distracted.

One example is how I’ve trimmed 15 minutes per day off of my email time.

That’s almost 2 hours per week saved on just one recurring task.

I could go on and on, but this post is too long already.

But Derek, the product creator, has a very nice video on his site showing how The Action Machine works.

I suggest you check it out.

That is, unless you already get everything done you want to get done on a daily basis…

To better productivity and higher profits!

I just had to spread the word about this.

Two UNBELIEVEABLE (yeah, I know that word is beaten to death these days) deals from one of the most respected and successful internet marketers.

I’m not going to make this a long post or embellish on the value, because frankly, I don’t have to.

Either you will immediately see the huge opportunity here or you won’t…

ITEM ONE:

111,107 articles with "Unlimited Use" rights, plus a bonus 300 more articles with full Private Label Rights.

So, aside from NOT being permitted to either sell the articles outright or give them away, you are limited only by your imagination.

Here are a few suggestions for their use:

1. Compile several of them into a free report (or multiple reports for various niches) to attract subscribers and build your list.

2. Create content sites for passive Adsense, banner ad or CPA revenue.

3. Load up your autoresponder with articles and drip-feed them to your subscribers.

4. Load up your blog(s) with articles and schedule them to post over the space of weeks or months.

5. Etc., etc.

Ok, here’s the BIG DEAL – they are for sale for ONE DOLLAR!

Now, please believe me when I say that I don’t post any crap on this blog.

And believe me further when I say that I have personally bought these articles and am EXTREMELY SATISFIED with them.

They are well written and in a wide range of topics – and there are one hundred and eleven THOUSAND of them!

So, there’s little chance of anyone using the same article twice – especially if you take just a couple of minutes to re-word some of each article before you post or submit it.

Listen, for a measly buck you really can’t go wrong. Plus there’s a 30-day guarantee, so no risk to you whatsoever.

So, if you’ve been needing some content and didn’t want to write it yourself, there’s enough here for several hundred blogs, ebooks, reports, autoresponder series, and on and on…

Get your 111,407 articles HERE

ITEM TWO:

List Building Explosion video series.

This is a 23 video series that covers the nuts and bolts of listbuilding. It also comes with a 20-page guide to compliment the videos.

Maybe the best part is it ALSO comes with transferable Master Resale Rights, plus the salespage and stuff.

So you can quickly set up shop and sell it yourself for 100% of the profits.

This series is also for sale for ONE DOLLAR!

And it also comes with a 30-day guarantee.

Get your List Building Explosion video course HERE

Like I said, there’s no need for me to go on and on about these two fabulous deals.

I have and recommend them. That’s all I can do. The rest is up to you…

Go forth and prosper!

In part one of this series I talked about how to serve your customers better through the proper use of the web’s fastest-growing medium – video.

In this final part, I want to talk about the most prevalent form of downloadable media online – PDFs.

At the end of part one, I mentioned I had only seen two marketers do what I’m about to tell you.

And frankly, I’m amazed that more haven’t taken their lead on what is undoubtedly a great benefit to all who read ebooks, reports, whitepapers or whatever else in PDF format on their computer screens.

Ok, I’ll cut to the chase…

I’m talking about publishing your PDFs in two formats – one for the web and one for being printed out in "hard copy".

In other words, one in "portrait" layout and one in "landscape" layout.

If you’re like me, you have downloaded hundreds, if not thousands of PDFs during your time online.

Some you read on-screen. And others you prefer to print out and read offline.

There’s just something about being able to hold it in your hands and flip through it (or punch holes in it and put it in a binder) while lazing on the couch (or wherever) that seems so right.

Not to mention that too much computer reading can lead to screen blindness (sort of (<;). Maybe it’s pixilated eyeballs? At any rate, it’s impossible to take notes and highlight stuff onscreen…

The first marketer I saw do this was Armand Morin. He did it with his "An Obvious Truth" report, released last year.

There’s a screenshot of it below that is linked to the site where the report is still available (and relevant).

No, it’s not an affiliate link…

Now, Armand is no slouch in IM circles. The man is a class act, in my opinion.

And when I got this report, the first thing I thought was "Wow, this is the way ALL marketers should offer their PDFs", or something like that.

My estimation of Armand was immediately increased – not only because of the beauty (nice graphics template) and functionality (fully linked throughout) of the report, but even more so because of the easy-to-read layout.

Who wants to scroll down each time they want to read the rest of a page? Not me!

Why not make the entire page visible with each mouse scroll or page-down button pushed? It’s drop-dead simple to do.

The next and only other guy I’ve seen do this is Leo Babauta, author of the short ebook "Zen To Done".

It’s a refined take on the famous book "Getting Things Done" by David Allen, but with a Zen touch to it.

I enjoyed it a lot, even though I hadn’t read Getting Things Done. It’s available here for a mere $9.50.

Or, if you prefer, you can read it in its entirety without downloading it, on Leo’s blog.

The point of all this is: You can make things easier for your readers (or viewers – see part 1) with a minimum of effort on your part.

But the improved experience that results for the consumers of your material will be a very nice feather in your marketing cap for future sales to those satisfied folks.

While I’m on the subject, let me tell you about columns.

As far as I’m concerned, columns only belong in dictionaries, encyclopedias and maybe the occasional newsletter.

Again, the goal should be to allow your reader to smoothly proceed through the material – from left to right – just as we learned how to read.

If you make them read one column and then have to look up, or worse yet, scroll up to read the rest of the page, you’ve done them a disservice.

So, write your stuff in standard book layout and leave the columns to reference manuals.

Finally, avoid Serif type fonts.

Serif fonts tend to cause eye strain because of all the extra ornamental stuff our minds have to process when reading – whether we know/realize it or not (now you do).

The easiest types of font to read are Sans Serif.

I’m talking about Helvetica, Arial, Tahoma, Verdana, etc.

So there you have it. To summarize:

1. Publish your PDFs in both layouts for maximum readability. Use Landscape layout for on-screen reading and Portrait layout for off-screen reading.

2. Avoid using columns in your writing.

3. Use only Sans Serif fonts to help avoid eyestrain for your readers.

If you do these simple things, I believe they will create increased and measurable appreciation on the part of your readers and pay major dividends to you in your marketing.

Oh yeah, one more thing.

Like I said in part one – tell your potential leads, subscribers and customers about what you’ve done to make their lives easier – i.e. benefits to them.

Since so few are doing this, it’s an easy way to not only separate yourself from the masses of other marketers, but to gain the followership of greater numbers of people who appreciate you really thinking about how to better serve them.

Now go forth and prosper!

Let’s face it, these days the so-called attention age deficit is in full swing.

In fact, with each passing day, I’m presented with more and more – not to mention longer – videos to watch (and to distract me).

I’m sure you are too.

And that’s not a bad thing, necessarily.

Problem is, the more time we spend watching, the less time we spend doing, right?

The old saying "Knowledge is power" is flat-out wrong!

The correct statement is: "Applied knowledge is power." With the obvious emphasis on "applied".

But there’s a Catch 22 to the process of acquiring and then applying such knowledge – TIME.

Watching multiple, increasingly longer videos every day, even on super-important, business-building topics, is a major time-sucker.

And often, after watching one or more of such videos, we find ourselves NOT going out of "passive mode" and into "active mode".

Clearly, that’s counterproductive to our growth.

But there is a way that we, as marketers and product creators, can mitigate that effect – at least the time-sucking aspect – for our customers.

It’s actually quite simple.

When we create videos, create them in a format (or formats) that allow the viewer to adjust the speed of playback.

Kind of a no-brainer, isn’t it?

Most of us know from previous instruction we’ve received or even from personal experience and observation, that we as humans are able to "process" verbal information at a rate two to three times as fast as the average speaker can deliver it.

In other words, our uptake is far greater than the average speaker’s output.

I have little doubt that if you’re reading this, you’ve been subjected to viewing a video that just seemed to drag on and on. If you’re like me, it actually demotivated and de-energized you, so that by the end, you were considering taking a nap!

So why not allow our customers and viewers the option of mentally uploading the information at their own pace? I mean, heck, they can always rewind or replay it if they missed or want to review anything.

My preferred player for viewing online videos is the native Windows Media Player, that plays videos in the WMV format.

As you can see in the lower left (sort of), it has some handy playback speed adjustment controls.

Here’s a close-up of the actual playback speed controls.

So, when I play back a video, especially a long one, I increase the speed to between 1.4 and 2.0 of normal playback.

I’m sure the time savings to me adds up to several hours each month. Hours that I can spend doing, rather than viewing…

Yes, it’s true that some videos sound a bit "chipmunky" when they are played faster than normal. But most are still quite discernible and it’s easy to get accustomed to the faster pace.

So, aside from telling you to limit the length of your videos by editing unscrupulously, I also recommend you produce your videos in a format (there are others besides WMV) that gives your customers the option of faster playback.

And when you produce a video product (even free stuff) with such a built-in option, tell your potential customers about it in your salesletter! You may be quite surprised about the reaction you receive…and quite likely the increase in conversions you experience.

In part two of this short series, I’ll cover another simple adjustment to "business as usual" that I’ve only seen two people do.

Will you join them to serve your customers better?…

I had to take the time to record something that happened to me yesterday.

I just couldn’t let this one go…

Here’s the story:

About a year or so ago I decided to take Playboy up on an excellent offer and subscribe to their magazine.

I mean, hey, I’m a red-blooded American boy. Besides, the stories are good, right?

Ok, so the year passes and my subscription comes to an end.

But well before that – and as expected – I was frequently offered various renewal options.

I simply chose to ignore them, having decided that I really didn’t need any more distractions in my already way-under-productive-for-my-abilities life. (<;

Note: At this point I suppose I should mention that I normally subscribe to magazines by sending a check, rather than giving them my credit card info. That way, they can’t automatically charge me if I missed some small print or didn’t uncheck a box, etc. when the renewal comes due.

So, yesterday I get a collection notice in the mail!

From Playboy – via Sunrise Credit Services.

Strange, I don’t remember entering into a continuing business agreement with Playboy (beyond the 1st year’s subscription), so why are they saying I’m "on the hook" to them for more money?

It’s a bit comical, because the collection notice starts out with:

When you receive a collection notice…

1. Don’t get angry
2. Communicate with us
3. Let us help

These folks obviously know their business, because the FIRST thing I did when I saw the notice and what it was for is get EXTREMELY ANGRY!

The nerve of Playboy coming after me, potentially damaging my excellent credit rating for a debt I didn’t owe on a commitment I didn’t make.

Honestly, I always honor my commitments and obligations, so this was a real shocker to me.

So, after I settled down from NOT following rule 1, I went for rule 2 and gave them (Sunrise Credit Services) a call.

I got through to a customer service rep relatively quickly and after briefly explaining my plight, she cancelled the action against me and presumably, Playboy’s attempts to bully me into continuing with them.

I asked her if this would have any impact on my credit rating and she said "no" without a moment’s hesitation.

In fact, the whole process was so easy and she seemed as if she performed this type of transaction hundreds of times a day, the realization of what had just happened hit me – hard!

This so-called collection agency is really just an extension of Playboy’s marketing arm.

Think about it, how many people do you think would have simply paid the bill – they provided THREE ways to do it on the collection notice – thinking that they really were obligated to pay it?

I’d bet the percentage is staggering.

And the recurring funds into Playboy’s coffers reflects it very well, you can be sure.

All because of:

A. Ignorance – people forgot what their original commitment was, and
B. Fear – people don’t want to be sued, especially by a giant like Playboy, or suffer a reduction on their credit score

Man, if that’s not predatory, I don’t know what is.

And I’m not a lawyer, but there’s got to be something going on here that, if not breaking the law, is either bending it to its extremes, using some obscure loophole, or both.

It’s got to be harrassment at the very least, right?

Here’s another example of predatory marketing, while I’m on the subject.

Have you seen the new Plavix commercial? You know, the one where the hospital gurney is following this guy around, while the narrator is saying that if you’ve had a clot before, you have a blah, blah chance of dying from the next one or some such BS?

Listen, that is an IN YOUR FACE, OVERT threat to your life – if you don’t take their damned artificial, synthetic chemical, designed only to treat, NEVER to cure.

They are essentially saying you are a walking dead man/woman if you don’t take their pill.

And the government – AMA, FDA, FTC – just let them continue to threaten and monger fear in the populace.

What’s wrong with this picture? How can they get away with this? Can you say greed?

But don’t get me started on Big Pharma – this isn’t the right blog…

Ok, so there’s your cautionary tale for the month.

Take home points:

1. If you subscribe to anything – daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually – record the details. Subscribe date, payment info, renewal info, etc. Keep a central file, Excel spreadsheet, etc. of all of your subscriptions, online and off.

2. Take extra time to read all of the small print. Especially regarding your exact monetary commitment, the renewal process and re-billing options.

3. Consider using a check for most offline subscriptions. That way, you can’t be re-billed without your consent.

I’d love to hear some examples of predatory practices you’ve seen or experienced – both online and off.

Hopefully this will help some people avoid the stress and hassle this caused for me.

Be well,

Russ

I recently bought an internet marketing course from someone who I had heard OF for years, but never had heard FROM – Terry Dean.

Terry is one of the early guys on the net who helped pave the way for much of what internet marketing has become today.

I guess he had kind of semi-retired from the business, which is why I hadn’t heard anything about him in a long while.

But recently, another old timer made a recommendation about a product by Terry and I decided to check it out.

It’s called his Internet Lifestyle Retirement System.

Talk about being blown away! Wow.

DVD after DVD of personally delivered content, painstakingly laid out in step-by-step, Camtasia screen capture or camcorder recorded videos.

And CDs loaded with tutorial videos specifically made for me to use to train my outsourced staff on specific tasks that support my business!

This course is without a doubt one of the top 5 best info product purchases I’ve made in all of my time online.

Absolutely incredible value – which is why it’s my Product of the Month!

I could go on and on, but this isn’t a product review article or pitch, it’s my lead-in to an article by Terry Dean himself.

Check this out and see if you agree with me – you don’t have to buy a product from him to realize that Terry knows his stuff – and he’s willing to share…

10 Internet Marketing Rules to Live By

Here are 10 simple Internet Marketing Rules to Live by. Print them. Post them to your desk. Use them everyday.

1. Invest Small When Starting Anything New.
Always invest small when starting out. It’s possible any ad you run may lose money. Always keep your risks and investment small whenever you’re starting a new type of advertising. Even if you had that top level copywriter write your ad, not everything they write will be a home run. It may need a few changes to produce the results you want. The market you’re advertising to may not be perfect. There is no such thing as a “Sure Thing.”

2. Test Everything.
Only one expert is right, and it’s not me. It’s your own personal test results. Test headlines. Test the length of your ad copy. Test audio and video on your sales page. Test a squeeze page before visitors get to the sales site. Constantly run 2 ads on Adwords for every ad group. Test a “try before you buy” offer. Test telephone follow-up. Quit blindly following gurus and test everything!

3. Be Unique.
Don’t ever be a me-too business. Take a look at everyone in your marketplace. What is different about you from them? Here’s a quick exercise. Write down all the benefits someone gets from your product or service. Now cross off all the benefits they can also get from other people’s products and services. What’s left? If nothing is left, you may need to rethink or modify what you offer to provide something unique in your marketplace.

4. Target Your Ads Only to Buyers.
You’ve chosen your niche, but do you write your ads to all your visitors. No. You will never achieve a 100% buying rate. Much more common is 1%…and 10% is extremely high (possible at times with strong follow-up). This means at least 90% of your website visitors are NOT your target audience even though they came to your site. You’re not writing to them. It doesn’t matter if those people like what you write at all. You’re writing only to the BUYERS…that 1 to 10% of your unique visitors who will take action.

5. Develop a Backend From the Beginning.
You should already have a basic idea or outline for your next offer before your first one is done. If your first product is an ebook or CD, what will you offer next? You may start your backend by offering joint venture deals and affiliate offers from others. The money is any business comes from repeat purchases and backend sales. In fact, I’d never want to be in any business where I HAD to make money from one product. It destroys your marketing ability. If your competitor can break even or even lose money on their advertising, how can you compete if you have to make a living off the same offer?

6. Your Network Determines Your Net Worth.
First heard that expression from Mark Victor Hansen. Strategic Alliances, social networking, referrals, viral marketing, etc. are the key to building your business online. Going it alone is a recipe for failure. In most businesses, affiliates make up 50% to 75% of sales. Incoming links from other sites is the key to search engine optimization. Find ways to serve the other top players in your niche. Network. Mastermind. Grow together…even with competitors.

7. Don’t Restrict Your Business to Internet Only.
You’re not an Internet business. You’re an Internet based business. Develop your business model with both Internet and offline strategies. Follow-up on customer by phone. Here’s a quick tip – call people who just purchased from you to thank them for their order and also offer them something else at a discount price right now (I’ve seen people increase profits by 40% from that alone). Send direct mail to your customers. Rent a targeted mailing list and send postcards to drive people to sign-up for your list. Use offline publicity and networking to generate leads.

8. Build your Relationship with Your Lists.
Yes, I said “lists,” not “list.” Concentrate on educating your list members…both with good content and about your products/services. Use online follow-up methods such as email and be willing to use direct mail. Send thank you cards to JV partners and customers. Run a teleconference where you meet with your customers or prospects. Create a blog. Put a face on your company and let them get to know you as a person.

9. Focus on Your Gifts.
Focus your time and attention on what you’re best at. There’s dozens of ways to market your site. Concentrate on the ones that most fit with your style and skillset. If you hate writing, then don’t use writing as your primary advertising method. Or hire out the writing. Figure out what skills you have…and focus on those. Outsource the rest to others. If you try to force yourself to be just like “Guru #1,” it’s simply going to be an exercise in frustration. You’re unique. Build a unique business suited to you.

10. Plan for the Long Haul.
I’m sure you’ve been told about instant riches overnight. Quit trying for that. And quit trying to jump on the “new thing.” Pick a business and work on it. Yes, I said work…that dirty four letter word so many people hate. Things might no go right when you first start. You might have to modify a few elements of your presentation. You might have to change your product. To be successful in this business requires you have a backbone and stick to it even when things don’t go your way! Develop at least a one year plan with daily actions to push you to success. You’ll make modifications along the way, but at least you have a basic roadmap of where you’re going.

See what I mean? Some really good stuff from one of the "pioneers" in our industry.

Terry has given me permission to publish more of his articles, so I’m going to do just that. Expect to see a few more in the near future.

He has a great teaching style. I don’t tend to get bored with his stuff like I do with other folks. It probably has something to do with the fact that he’s actually done (and IS DOING) what he teaches. That’s always a biggy with me, how about you?

Anyway, take this information (with Terry’s and my compliments), USE IT – and prosper!
