Parliament in the Park: UKYCC

The UKYCC is proud to present the official launch event of the Adopt an MP campaign – Parliament in the Park!

Taking place on Monday 13th September, 1-4pm, Parliament in the Park will bring together over 200 young people, between the ages of 16-25, with politicians and other guests for a picnic in Old Palace Yard, Westminster, London.

By allowing young people and MPs to meet over a slice of cake, rather than in the dark corridors of the House of Commons, parliament in the Park will bring politicians closer to young people in a fun and engaging way.

Over the picnic you will be able to begin the personal relationship the Adopt an MP hopes to foster, and start to find out what local environment issues your MP is interested in.

Adding substance to the afternoon will be a series of speeches and workshops providing both motivation and training so that you are able to return home and become a leader within your community. Speaking at the event will be;

Dave Hampton, Carbon Coach! Dave will be speaking about how to reduce our carbon footprints, and how to prepare for tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities
Niel Bowerman, who sat on President Obama’s Energy and Environment Policy Committee during the 2008 presidential election campaign and is the co-founder of Climatico, a network of researchers and experts providing independent analysis of climate change policy. Niel will provide an introduction to climate science for non-scientists

Gemma Bone, a past UKYCC delegate to Copenhagen, who will be talking about the role of young people in climate Change Campaigning

We will also in the process of confirming a DECC minister, who will speak about the role of the government in finding climate change solutions

In addition to speakers, there will be a UKYCC workshop based on the ideas and theories of cognitive scientist and professor, George Lakoff – ‘Framing the Debate!’ The workshop has been made specifically for young people and will give you the tools required to reshape the climate change debate into a positive and exciting idea. You’ll learn how to get in on framing the game yourself, using language to reshape the debate back in your favour and to win the argument – allowing you to return home and become leaders within your local community.

We also hope to have interactive workshops from the Otesha Project and a number of coalition partners to represent themselves, and rumours of interactive workshops (making wallets from tetrapack, bike fixing etc) have started to take shape!

The Adopt an MP campaign is not about criticism or praise, but remembering that MPs are humans and need our support to make a stand and fight for to create the clean, fair future that we need.

Conference Pride
03 October at 19:00 – 04 October at 03:30

Following the success of our first ever official conference gay night in Manchester, we’re delighted to announce that Conference Pride is coming to Birmingham.

Dinner

Enjoy a fabulous three-course dinner with half a bottle of wine and music by professional pianist Carl Joseph. The ticket price includes entrance to the club night, so you can carry on partying with fellow Conservatives until the small hours.

Taking place on Sunday 3 October from 19.00-21.30 at The Angel.

Club Night

Adam Rickett will host the evening at Nightingales, Birmingham’s top gay club, and there will be appearances from Cabinet Members and high-profile MPs. As well as great music and a lively atmosphere, there will be a live performance by Mica Paris, and outdoor terraces to relax on.

Taking place on Sunday 3 October from 21.30 – 03.30 at Nightingales Club (adjacent to The Angel).

The Great British Pub Quiz

Worcestershire CF welcomes new Worcester MP Robin Walker

On Sunday 1st August, Worcestershire CF hosted its first official event in the form of a BBQ kindly hosted by Lisa Jones in Cookley. The event in Cookley near Kidderminster welcomed over 20 CF’ers who came from as far as Hull, Manchester, London and Worcester.

The photos attached show new Worcester MP Robin Walker who spoke at length to the crowd assembled along with Chris Morrall, Ed Turner and local activists.

The event was organised jointly by Chris Morrall (Worcestershire Area Chairman) and Ed Turner (Worcester Chairman) and the duo look set to continue the good work in Worcestershire with another social due on Sunday 12th September in the form of a ‘Curry Night.’

All CF members are welcome, and the ‘Curry Night’ has the added excitement of being a possible CF National Chairman Hustings.

CF Elections – Timetable & Positions

We can now provide further details about the upcoming CF elections.

The full timetable is:

16th August – Opening of Nominations
6th September – Close of nominations at noon
6th September – List of valid candidates published at 5pm
7th September – Last time for a candidate to withdraw at 5pm
7th September – Last time for a candidate to provide the 500 words for the website
8th September – Distribution of ballot papers
27th September – Close of Ballot at 12 noon
27th September – Count of Ballot at 5pm

All members of the Party aged under 30 (of at least three months standing) are eligible to stand in the elections for the following positions:

National Executive:

National Chairman
Deputy Chairman (Political)
Deputy Chairman (Membership)
Appointed Officer

Regional Chairmen:

Regional Chairman for Northern Ireland
Regional Chairman for Wales
Regional Chairman for Yorkshire & The Humber
Regional Chairman for North West England
Regional Chairman for North East England
Regional Chairman for West Midlands
Regional Chairman for East Midlands
Regional Chairman for Eastern England
Regional Chairman for South West England
Regional Chairman for South East England
Regional Chairman for London

Once elected the Regional Chairmen will each form a regional executive made up of Area Chairman, who will be elected at local AGMs.

As stated in the timetable nominations will open on 16th August 2010. Nomination forms and further information will be listed on this website from that date.

CF Constitution

Below you can download a new copy of the Conservative Future Constitution that has been approved by the Conservative Party Board.

We’ve updated this document for several reasons; the main reason though was so that we could cement the Regional Chairman role as a fully elected position.

The following changes have been made to the document:

To slim down the National Executive to just four elected positions, whilst keeping the flexibility of co-opting up to three more members.
The Regional Chairmen positions were already in the document, but we wanted to ensure that in future they are always elected.
To restructure the Area Chairman role so in future they exist as part of a regional executive under the relevant Regional Chairman.
To remove specific quoted CF Committees (Membership & Constitutional), but to allow for committees to be established in the future if needed.

Epsom & Ewell CF hosts Minister of State Chris Grayling MP

For our regular Speaker social his month we welcomed Chris Grayling to talk to us on all areas of the recent emergency budget & coalition agreement, with a special focus on his new brief within the Department of Work & Pensions and the Coalition’s plans for welfare reform. Chris gave us his thoughts, and then opened the floor for general questions and discussion.

The topic of welfare provision brought about great discussion from all members, with everyone enjoying the opportunity to air their views on the developments post-Election. The debate was lend additional weight by the influx of new members EECF has enjoyed since the General Election campaign, with long-standing election veterans mixing with some who have yet to take part in any campaigning. Everyone was keen to understand what the Coalition agreement will mean for the Party’s pre-election welfare plans – and some, of course, did not agree with everything. The Conservative Party has always been a confident enough organisation that honest debate will always strengthen it – and this was very much the case, with many answers given and arguments/counter-arguments supplied all went home contented.

As Chairman of the Epsom and Ewell Conservative Future I was very proud of my members who provided a constant stream of well informed, and occasionally very innovative, questions – as well as adding their own special contributions to the discussion. We were fortunate that Chris stayed on long beyond what his diary had prescribed to answer our questions and join the debate – for which we offer our further thanks to him. At times I must say anyone listening in and not informed of the event would have been surprised to learn the average age of the attendees was well under 30! On a personal note, and I have said this before – but I believe it should be said again; it is evenings like this which make the efforts of the Committee and myself worthwhile.

All those that were there expressed a desire to see if Chris will come again soon, his work at the Department of Work & Pensions permitting. Our next event will be on the 30th of July at our usual venue, the Epsom Conservative Club. (speaker TBC).

Conservative Future Elections 2010

The Conservative Party Co-Chairmen have announced their intention to hold elections for the leadership of Conservative Future.

The elections will be held during the summer and will be concluded by this year’s Party Conference.

The electoral roll will be made up of every member of the Party under the age of 30. Over the next few weeks associations will be asked to send in relevant data to make up the electorate. For university members to vote, the branch must ensure that their data has been sent to the local association. CF members who joined the Party centrally (through conservatives.com) will be added automatically.

Nominations for all available positions will announced shortly.

For all other inquiries, please write to the Party’s Nominating Officer Alan Mabbutt (alan.mabbutt@conservatives.com) who will act as the Returning Officer.

Shoot Nations 2010

Shoot Nations is an annual, global photography project including a competition, workshops and exhibitions on various continents. Each year focusses on a different global issue and the photographs produced are presented to the United Nations in New York.

Have your Say
This year’s theme is CITY LIVING. Whether living in the country, town or big city, we want to build a global picture of what urban environments mean to young people aged 11 – 25.

It doesn’t matter what sort of camera you have – phone camera, high-end digital, point-and-shoot, show us your view of city life. The best 48 images will be presented to the United Nations in New York on International Youth Day to represent youth opinion on this global issue.
