Far-left extremist Alexandra Gutierrez will be our final contestant. There are many more but hey, these nine hacks were the nine that stood out. She completely embarrassed herself and exposed the fact that she knows nothing about Alaska or politics. Alexandra, you are probably better qualified to shine Governor Palin's shoes than you are commenting on anything related to politics given that what you have written proves that you are a completely clueless idiot. You do know there are 1668 votes between Miller and Murkowski now, with 20,000 votes still to count, right? She won. Just watch.

Feel free to tell me "told you so" in November if Joe Miller becomes Alaska's Senator. I haven't been wrong on AK in 18 years.

Who Was the Biggest Hack from the Alaska Senate Primary? Contestant #6: Tom Jensen from Public Policy Polling (D)

Contestant #6 is another pollster, Tom Jensen from Public Policy Polling (D). Jensen and his polling firm proved that they have no idea how to poll Alaska given how badly they failed in the Alaska Senate primary. Jensen earns a spot on this lost because he made the following assessment of the Alaska Senate primary in June. Take a bow hack:

Folks who don't pay a lot of attention to Alaska polling numbers might assume that Sarah Palin is by far the most popular Republican in the state and that Lisa Murkowski could be seriously affected by Palin's endorsement of her primary opponent...but that's not true. Murkowski's 77/13 approval with Republican voters is almost identical to Palin's 78/15 favorability. Because of that Murkowski won't likely see much negative effect from Palin's action.

And for what it's worth when you get beyond the GOP base in Alaska Murkowski is much more popular than Palin- a 52/36 approval spread compared to the former Governor's 47/45 favorability.

The narrative that hacks such as Jensen, Moore, and Hellenthal have relied upon is that their polling was always accurate and that Joe Miller came back from 40 points down in the last two weeks because the Tea Party Express aired a couple of ads. In other words, these hacks would have you believe that Murkowski was incredibly popular but that three ads in the final two weeks allowed a guy who had been outspent 10-to-1 to defeat her and not even break a sweat on election day as he never trailed when the votes were counted.

What makes this theory even more laughable and hilarious is that absentee ballots pretty much prove this argument to be false. If the pollsters were always right and that Miller only surged in the final two weeks, then why is it that the absentee ballots pretty much broke evenly between the two. Wouldn't Murkowski win 60% of the absentees if the pollsters were always right and that Miller made his surge in the final two weeks?

Hacks like Jensen, Moore, and Hellenthal need to face the music. You guys are clueless when it comes to polling Alaska. The one pollster that actually came close (and even it was probably too favorable to Murkowski) found that Governor Palin's "very favorable" rating exceeded Lisa Murkowski's "very favorable" rating by double digits. That was the ballgame as all Miller needed to do was win everyone who had a "very favorable" rating of Palin and he would be 84% of the way to the 51% he won in the primary.

If the media wants to be taken seriously, it would disregard Jensen, Moore, and Hellenthal on anything when it comes to Alaska. Fortunately for these hacks, the media doesn't care about being taken seriously.

Who Was the Biggest Hack from the Alaska Senate Primary? Contestant #5: Pat Forgery

Contestant #5 is Pat Forgery from the Juneau Empire. I hate to do this because Forgery has been great in his reporting on ACES and AGIA but Forgery's reporting on the Alaska Senate primary was shameful. Forgery engaged in sheer comedy when he wrote the following. Take a bow hack:

An analysis by the Empire of the types of votes and where they are from indicated that Murkowski has a reasonable chance to eliminate Miller's lead.

Of course Forgery failed to indicate in the article how the Empire arrived at such a conclusion. Forgery should have realized that the Empire analysis was bogus. The analysis conducted by the far-left Swing-State Project and the Hotline both concluded that Murkowski would gain very little from the absentees. Yet, Forgery went ahead and pushed the spin for Joe Miller's opponent in hopes of creating drama when there was absolutely no reason to believe that Murkowski would make up the votes.

Just listen to Governor Palin's interviews in the week leading up to the absentee count. She called it for Miller because she knew how the absentee ballot would go. The only people who didn't know Miller would win were hacks.

Who Was the Biggest Hack from the Alaska Senate Primary? Contestant #4: Marc Hellenthal

Contestant #4 is Marc Hellenthal. Hellenthal is another Alaskan pollster who should see his clientele diminish dramatically in the wake of his disastrous and embarrasing performance in the Alaska Senate primary. Hellenthal has a record of getting races involving Governor Palin completely wrong. Hellenthal found Governor Palin losing to John Binkley in the GOP primary in 2006 and then losing to Tony Knowles in the general. It goes without saying that neither event occurred. Take a bow hack:

"I would expect Sarah's going to be very embarrassed by the results Tuesday," said Republican pollster Marc Hellenthal, who is not involved in the primary.

She's so embarrased that the candidate she endorsed won despite being out-spent by a 10-to-1 margin by his opponent.

Fortunately for Hellenthal, the media is no longer credible in this country and Hellenthal can bank on the fact that it will continue to cite him as an authority despite the fact that he has been hilariously wrong on nearly every occasion when it comes to Governor Palin.

Who Was the Biggest Hack from the Alaska Senate Primary? Contestant #3: Ivan Moore

Contestant #3 is Ivan Moore, a hack whose reputation was probably more damaged than anyone other than Marc Hellenthal (a later contestant) from the Alaska Senate primary. Moore claims to be a pollster but after his performance in the Alaska Senate race, I doubt any clients will every pay him a cent for his services. Take a bow hack:

"I'm sure Palin's had an impact [on Miller]," said Alaska-based pollster Ivan Moore. "And I'm sure it’s been a net negative for him. You shouldn't even want the endorsement of someone with those ratings in the state...The Tea Party movement just isn't very strong up here, which I guess is a bit ironic."

Ivan, you mean the ratings from the one pollster that came close that showed Palin's "very favorable" exceeding Murkowski's "very favorable" ratings by double-digits?

Here's a suggestion for any credible news outlet: never cite a poll or analysis about Governor Palin from this hack ever again.

Contestant #2 is another hack but a somewhat less familiar name to Palin supporters. Dave "Not So Super" Stieren, take a bow for these comments:

There's always going to be that 20 percent lemming group that are going to throw themselves off a cliff for Sarah Palin up here," says Stieren. "But you're not going to win with 20 percent."

Well Stieren, it looks like all of us lemmings throwing ourselves off the cliff were enough to win. By the way "Not so Super" Dave, you might want to take a look at the one pollster who came within the vicinity of polling the race correctly. RT Nielson found that Palin's "very favorable" rating exceeded Murkowski's by double-digits. All the decorated Desert Storm combat veteran needed to do was win over us lemmings throwing ourselves off the cliff and that would get him 84% of the vote he needed.

Don't worry about it Dave. You can keep on cheering against your state with your fellow hack Andrew Halcro by praying for AGIA to fail.

For the rest of the day, I'm running a contest on who was the biggest hack from the Alaska Senate primary. There are a lot of contestants. At the end of the day, I'll leave it to you guys to vote for who was the biggest hack. Let's start it off with contestant #1....

Contestant #1 is one of the biggest hacks in politics and a familiar name to every Palin supporter. Andrew Halcro, take a bow for the following prediction:

But lets be clear; Lisa Murkowski will walk all over Joe Miller in the primary election just like she did to Mike Miller six years ago.

Six week outs and I'm calling it 62-38 Murkowski.

The only thing that's clear is that Andrew Halcro knows nothing about Alaska politics. Halcro was only off by a net 26 points. Halcro's only hope to stay relevant is to root against his state by hoping that AGIA fails (a strategy that is analogous to the Democrat Party and community organizer Barack Obama rooting against the troops in Iraq by opposing the surge strategy that won the war). Any news outlet that would consider Halcro credible after his meltdown in the Alaska Senate race is not credible itself.

How the Media Used to Treat Sarah Palin

After discussing with a friend, the horrid hit-piece from Michael Joseph Gross in this week's Vanity Fair, he reminded me of an old article published by a different magazine, from a different time.

Back in February 2008, Vogue featured a much different sort of article about Governor Palin. The piece was titled "Altered State" and it highlighted many different elements of the governor's life, both personal and professional. The beginning of the piece says a lot about who exactly Sarah Palin is as a person, and how the media has changed in regards to their treatment of her since then. The piece starts:

The editor of Alaska magazine had a problem. State governor Sarah Palin, with her historically high approval rating and natural good looks (one blogger called her Tina Fey's sexier sister), seemed a natural choice for the cover of his magazine. Problem was, the picture they had shot in her Juneau office showed Palin smiling. The official governor's portrait of her? Smiling. The pictures for her campaign against the incumbent Republican governor? Also smiling. That time she won the Miss Wasilla beauty contest 24 years ago? Probably smiling too.

This time, they were shooting her in her Anchorage office on the seventeenth floor of a downtown skyscraper overlooking the snow-covered Chugach mountains. "I don't want you to look mean," the editor told the governor when she arrived. "Just don't smile."

"OK." Palin looked skeptical. "I'll try." She folded her arms and looked straight into the lens. As the camera clicked, the corners of her mouth began to twitch.

"This is really hard for her," her spokesperson observed from the back of the room. "She is always smiling."

After a dozen or so clicks, the tension was too much. "OK," the editor relented. "Go ahead and smile."

"Thank you!" she answered, releasing the expression like a caged animal. Outside, the dying winter sun briefly lit the mountains with a rosy light and then was gone. "She really is a breath of fresh air," the editor said as the photographer packed up his equipment. "It feels like a new era in Alaska."

The rest of the article goes on to talk about Governor Palin's efforts to clean up Alaska's government, and her courageous decision to expose the antics she witnessed at the Oil & Gas Conservation Commission by members of her own party. It also talks a lot about her family life, including a trip over to her parents house by the writer. It is quite the contrast in character between the person interviewed by Vogue in 2008, and the person not interviewed, just seriously maligned by Vanity Fair in 2010. It's pretty clear at this point, that nobody with a serious or sane bone in their body believes anything Vanity Fair tried to sell with that garbage article. As has been noted throughout the day, even people on the left are shunning the eight pages of libel they published. I do hope Vanity Fair loses some readers over this episode. They don't deserve your hard-earned money, America! Lies are lies... Who wants to pay someone to lie to them?

I realize that Vogue and Vanity Fair are two different publications. However, I do not think it can be disputed that Governor Palin's treatment by the press dramatically changed the day she was announced as John McCain's running mate in 2008. The levels the media has sunk since to distort America's perception about her, is perhaps something that psychology majors should consider a study in. They are low-down, mean spirited, delusional, they attack her children, and they leave their own credibility in a pile of ashes in their quest.

Then they wonder why she won't sit down for an interview with them.

Throughout the remainder of the Alaska Senate race, I refuse to refer to the candidate that the Alaska Democrat Party has nominated by his name. Since the Alaska Democrat Party is not a credible entity and is a party that is far too extreme and radical to be taken seriously, I will instead refer to its nominee as "a disgraceful community organizer." The disgraceful community organizer tweeted the following last night:

"I think it is incredibly ironic that #SarahPalin will endorse an ivy league lawyer over a small town mayor."

In reality, what Alaskans will see is that Governor Palin endorsed a Desert Storm combat veteran over a disgraceful community organizer.

Alaskans will see that Governor Palin endorsed a West Point Cadet over a disgraceful far-left Democrat Party hack.

Alaskans will see that Governor Palin endorsed a man who received a Bronze Star for his exemplary service of our country in a time of war over a disgraceful hack who likely is sympathetic to the criminal organization that is ACORN.

Does the far-left in Alaska really want to play this game? You do recall what happened in 2008 in Alaska when a decorated military veteran went against a disgraceful community organizer?

I have a challenge for Ben Smith, Dave Weigel, Kirsten Powers, race-baiter Charles Blow, Amanda Coyne, Monika Bauerlein, and Shakesville. All of you are very liberal and all of you have denounced in some manner today's Vanity Fair hit piece. However, you have denounced the hit piece in limited mediums such as twitter and blog posts. The questions that you have raised about the piece are being ignored by your extreme left-wing friends. I challenge each of you to go on MSNBC or any left-wing network and raise the same issues you have on twitter and blog posts. If you want to prove that you aren't a total far-left hack, you would take up this challenge and show that you are willing to deviate from left-wing orthodoxy in a substantive manner. It's too easy to claim you are "reasonable" by putting something up on twitter or a blog post. If you really want to prove that you are reasonable, go on MSNBC and defend Palin the same way you did today.

Rule: Political endorsements don't typically matter all that much, no matter who they're from, short of, say, the spirits of John F. Kennedy or Ronald Regan, back from a trip to the afterlife. Murkowski exception: If you're running to represent Alaska in Washington, D.C., and you find yourself crosswise with the political phenomenon that is Palin, be prepared to instead take a long look at Russia from the comfort of your house.

She spoke with Hannity on the radio today. We'll have that interview up as soon as possible. What else is going on today?

Vanity Fair In “Cheap Shot Heaven”

Anyone reviewing the latest Vanity Fair article about Governor Palin should at least do so armed with an awareness of the words of Mary Hargrove, a former editor and investigative reporter for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:

"When I go to Washington and I see a proliferation of anonymous sources used daily, I don't believe it myself even when I know the authors," says Mary Hargrove, an editor and investigative reporter for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. "I think, 'Can't you take that extra step?' It's just cheap shot heaven."

This, of course, is something which appears lost on Michael Joseph Gross, for it seems that he was too busy interviewing anonymous people who admire Governor Palin; anonymous Republican leaders who privately dismiss her; an anonymous bellman; anonymous maids; an anonymous onetime gubernatorial aide to Palin; various anonymous aides/close aides/ campaign aides; an anonymous close friend of Governor Palin; one anonymous person with firsthand knowledge of the situation; anonymous others who have worked with Palin; an anonymous leading member of Wasilla’s Church on the Rock; independent Democrat bloggers who have produced some of the most robust reporting about Governor Palin (like the stories they fabricated about a federal investigation and an impending divorce, their conspiracies about the parentage of two of the Palin children and their investigation into the shape of Trig Palin’s ears); anonymous strongest supporters; anonymous insiders; anonymous rumor-mongerers around town; one anonymous person who has been a frequent houseguest of the Palins; some anonymous people who say that Todd Palin is henpecked; anonymous general consensus in town; anonymous eavesdroppers; an anonymous high-school classmate; an anonymous source; and one anonymous woman in Wasilla.

Clearly, during his time in Alaska Mr Gross encountered a situation familiar to Joann Byrd, former editor of the Everett Herald in Washington state,"I think there are more anonymous sources per capita in Washington than there are anywhere else in the world. Nobody has a name in Washington."

For "Washington" read "Alaska".

Laughably, and here we see the true measure of Gross’ hackery, one person who is named in the article is someone called Sandra, whom Mr Gross feels able to quote despite never having met her.

Perhaps he ought to have been more thorough in that aspect, amongst others, for she is a person well known to the readers of C4P as the pseudonymous Sandrainoregon, or EclecticSandra, or SandraBuehler, or R2D2…… a retired, elderly, archetypal basement dwelling, pajama clad resident of Portman, Oregon, who, for reasons best known to herself, presumably, is devoting every day of her twilight years attempting to undermine Governor Palin by posting inflammatory and provocative comments at pro-Palin blogs.

With the Miller victory, Palin-backed candidates have now knocked off party darlings in Alaska, Kentucky, South Carolina and Texas. From the statehouses to the halls of Congress ... the Palin conservative revolution is underway. Redstate editor Erik Erickson says this movement is a blow to establishment leaders such as Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell.

This news is bigger than Lisa Murkowski. While Establishment Republicans will bristle at it, this is a near total kneecapping of Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, not to mention another rejection of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Consider this inside baseball fact: McConnell has chosen as his loyal lieutenants at the leadership table Robert Bennett (R-UT), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX).

Judd Gregg is retiring and McConnell sought to replace him with Trey Grayson of Kentucky. Grayson, however, lost to Rand Paul in the Kentucky GOP Primary.

Conservatives threw Bob Bennett out at the Utah GOP convention, replacing him with firebrand conservative Mike Lee.

Now Lisa Murkowski is defeated, like Bob Bennett, by conservative activists concerned by the fiscal drift of the Republican Party and the overall direction of the American republic.

Consider another fact: Conservatives, led by Jim DeMint and Sarah Palin, are potentially creating the most conservative Senate Republican Conference in the last thirty or so years: Sharron Angle, Ken Buck, Mike Lee, Joe Miller, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, and Pat Toomey will be joining Jim DeMint, Tom Coburn, and David Vitter.

Update: Gabriel Malor, a blogger from the socially moderate Ace of Spades, hits Jim DeMint for not acknowledging Governor Palin's role in Joe Miller's victory:

Vanity Fair cannot even convince the pro-abortion far-left feminist crowd! Shakesville writes:

Gross' article, however, amounts to very little but "Sarah Palin is the worst because she's in politics...and is A WOMAN."

What makes this article the worst thing I've read all day is the fact that most of what's in it is the sort of sh*t that is considered (rightly or wrongly) the mundane business of doing politics, and yet is somehow ZOMG SHOCKING when done by Sarah Palin.

I remain constantly infuriated at the number of pieces written about Sarah Palin that compel feminist/womanist women to come to her defense, or, at minimum, point out the absurdity of the coverage.

Pro-abortion radical Monika Bauerlein from the extreme Mother Jones magazine tweets:

I didn't think anything could make me rear up in Sarah Palin's defense, but this VF profile is close.

"Sarah, these aides say, seemed comforted by having the children around, and she seemed lonely when they were gone." Truly a monster.

Democrat Party Hack Ravi Somaiya Admits He Lied and Governor Palin is Now Immune from the Left

Everyone who has a computer is jumping on the latest hit piece against Governor Palin. Thankfully even many on the left see it for what it is. But, writing for Newsweek, far-left radical Ravi Somaiya, without even realizing it, hit the nail on the head on why these hit pieces keep on appearing:

Indeed, it is hard to imagine a more conventional politician surviving the claims that Gross makes. He systematically undermines the very aspects of her life that her image is built on: family, God, empowering women, children, and affinity for everyday folks.

Spot on: That’s what it is. Ever since her selection as VP there has been a coordinated attempt by the left to take her down. They have tried just about anything and everything, nothing seems to stick, so now it’s about “systematically undermining the very aspects of her life” and as Ben Smith at Politico pointed out, when it comes to Governor Palin, anything goes.

Somaiya takes issue with the fact that, as much as the left may try, Governor Palin always survives those attacks, and unlike “conventional politicians”, it even makes her stronger. He uses the recent controversy of President Obama’s religion as an example:

But more baseless accusations have hampered politicians—just ask Barack Obama about his religion.

Somaiya couldn’t cite any other examples on the President, because there aren’t any. The media has been in the President's pocket from the day he announced his candidacy and up until today they’re working over time to cover up for him. So when a story does slide through their protective shields, of course it will have a lasting impression on the American people.

Every single day there is another hit piece against Governor Palin. Attack stories against her are often prepared even before the story they are writing about even happens. At some point Governor Palin becomes immune from those attacks, when even far left journalists are defending her. She is way past that point.

Finally, Somaiya is also whining that we called him a “far-left radical" and "a total extremist". Let’s examine the facts:

The guy wrote an article pretty much dedicated to why hit pieces against the Governor only make her stronger among her supporters. Inevitably Conservatives4Palin will make its way into such a piece. It’s not unreasonable to expect that the writer, about to make an accusation, would at least have the courtesy to do a quick check and verify his argument. Somaiya did no such thing and without hesitation when it comes to things related to Governor Palin, he made up a fact and posted it. Somaiya should be glad we were so gracious and just stuck to referring to him by his title.

But if he still wonders why attacks against the Governor don’t stick, this is exactly why.

You know it's bad for Vanity Fair when even liberals like Ben Smith, Dave Weigel, and Kirsten Powers are defending Governor Palin and conceding that the Vanity Fair Hit Piece is questionable. If you cannot convince people on the left like Smith, Weigel, and Powers, who can you convince?

Ben Smith writes (emphasis added):

A former aide to the McCain campaign got in touch with me this morning to cop to being the half-serious progenitor of a story which, embellished almost beyond recognition, appears in Vanity Fair's portrait today of Sarah Palin as monster.

Reports Vanity Fair:

Soon after her nomination, she brought up with McCain aides the subject of Bristol’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy by Levi Johnston: “Would it be good for the campaign if they got married before the election?” she asked, and went on to wonder whether one weekend or another would be more advantageous for media coverage.

This anecdote first popped up in London's Sunday Times, a regular landing point for political anecdotes that the less credulous American press won't print without checking. From that story:

Inside John McCain’s campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. “It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”

The fantastic quote -- and perhaps the clue that this one hadn't quite risen to the levels of the principals -- is the guarantee that Levi would show: "“It’s a shotgun wedding. She kills things,” the source joked.

Indeed, the former McCain aide (my source and the Times's) recalls gleefully that while he kicked it around a bit with other aides -- as the "end all be all stunt for a campaign of stunts" -- the idea was never brought to Palin, much less seriously considered.

The Vanity Fair story also focuses on Palin's temper, which may well be a real quality, but can't be quite as out-of-control as its portrayed: It isn't something the campaign staff -- even the large number of them who derided her as lazy, undisciplined, or unready -- complained of.

One great anecdote that does ring true on the nearly open civil war at the end of the campaign:

When John McCain decided to pull out of Michigan, a decision Palin disagreed with, Recher and Palin hatched a plan one day to make an early-morning drive to Michigan anyway. The Secret Service, becoming aware of the plan, asked the McCain campaign what it should do. The answer came: “Shoot out the tires.”

But my takeaway from the magazine piece is more that you can really write anything about Palin.

Ben Smith draws attention to a thinly-sourced quote in Michael Joseph Gross's profile of Sarah Palin:

Smith explains that the quote came from a wild yarn in a UK Times story, passed on by a McCain campaign source, even though "the idea was never brought to Palin, much less seriously considered." I can confirm that because I heard it from the same source, albeit after the campaign was over. It was, as I understand it, a goof, and it went to print because, basically, UK papers have more lax standards on what they print than American papers. Of course, it's not like American papers have covered themselves in glory when "analyzing" Palin's family based on rumors.

Point is, this anecdote is bunk, and it makes me wonder about the rest of the story.

If people on the left like Smith, Weigel, and Powers don't believe the Vanity Fair story, I can only wonder what the mainstream of America will think about it. Vanity Fair must really only be trying to appeal to extremists.

Far-left radical Ravi Somaiya writes in Newsweek:

Conservatives4Palin, a blog dedicated to her, hadn't even mentioned the Vanity Fair article at the time of writing.

Somaiya is flat-out lying. Here is a blog post that was published last night on this blog about the Vanity Fair article. Somaiya's assertion is flat-out untrue.

Only a total extremist like Somaiya would write a lie that could so easily be disproved. We'll have more on this story throughout the day. All you need to know is that even liberals don't believe the Vanity Fair story.

Pollsters Have a History of Erring When It Comes to Polling Governor Palin in Alaska

The Daily Kos pollster, Public Policy Polling (D), just released a poll about Governor Palin's standing in Alaska. I'll ask the same question that I asked the other day: why would anyone take this pollster seriously considering that it was hilariously wrong about the Senate primary?

What PPP(D) won't tell you is that it had previously effectively labeled Murkowski a lock because she was allegedly just as popular with Republicans as Palin. Here is what PPP(D) wrote several months ago when it conducted its last Alaska poll:

Folks who don't pay a lot of attention to Alaska polling numbers might assume that Sarah Palin is by far the most popular Republican in the state and that Lisa Murkowski could be seriously affected by Palin's endorsement of her primary opponent...but that's not true. Murkowski's 77/13 approval with Republican voters is almost identical to Palin's 78/15 favorability. Because of that Murkowski won't likely see much negative effect from Palin's action.

And for what it's worth when you get beyond the GOP base in Alaska Murkowski is much more popular than Palin- a 52/36 approval spread compared to the former Governor's 47/45 favorability.

Well, we all know that assessment from PPP(D) turned out to be comically wrong as Murkowski conceded to Miller last night.

In any event, I think a broader point needs to be made about how and why pollsters are screwing up so badly when it comes to polling Palin and Alaska. Pollsters have tried to claim that they weren't really wrong when they showed Murkowski incredibly popular among Republicans and ahead of Miller by 30 points because Miller somehow surged into the lead the final two weeks because of a couple of ads from the Tea Party Express. That theory was effectively nipped in the bud by Miller's performance among the absentee ballots. If the pollsters were correct that Miller destroyed a 30-point lead in the last two weeks, wouldn't Murkowski have won the absentee ballots by a huge margin considering that some of the absentees must have come before Miller made this purported 30-point surge in the last two weeks? In reality, the absentee ballots effectively broke evenly between Miller and Murkowski, suggesting that Murkowski never had what the pollsters claimed to be a 30-point lead over the West Point graduate and Bronze Star recipient. The most reasonable explanation is that pollsters have no clue when it comes to polling Alaska and specifically, they are clueless when it comes to polling Governor Palin in Alaska.

Look back at the 2008 presidential polling in Alaska. Liberal Nate Silver shows that an average of the polls showed McCain and Palin winning Alaska by 14 points. In reality, McCain and Palin won by almost 22 points. Pollsters, including Scott Rasmussen, also showed Palin's approval rating in Alaska to be in the low 60s heading into election day. In reality, the exit poll of real voters found her approval rating to be at 73% on election day. Two of the final polls conducted before election day in 2006 found Palin tied or losing to Democrat Party hack Tony Knowles. In reality, she beat Knowles handily. So why is it that pollsters continue to err when it comes to Palin and Alaska?

One answer is that these pollsters are total hacks. Another answer is that these pollsters are finding too many voters from Anchorage, Juneau, and rural Alaska while polling too few voters in Fairbanks, Kenai/Kodiak, and the Mat-Su Valley, one of the fastest growing areas in the country. A sample that is comprised of too many voters from Anchorage is going to find too many center-left voters than there actually are and that will skew the results against Palin as center-left voters are not fans of hers. Typically, patriotic people in the United States military tend to be strong supporters of people like Governor Palin and Joe Miller.

The reason why the RT Nielson poll was closer than any other poll in gauging the Alaska Senate primary was because it nailed the geographical composition of the electorate. It didn't poll too many voters from Anchorage as it determined that 35% of the electorate would be from Anchorage and that's basically what the percentage of the vote was from Anchorage in the real Senate primary. RT Nielson also concluded that 19% of the vote would come from the Mat-Su Valley area. A little over 20% of the votes cast in the real Alaska senate primary did come from the Valley.

Why would any reasonable person consider PPP(D) more credible than the RT Nielson poll when the latter showed Miller closing on Murkowski and the former claimed Murkowski was a lock? The RT Nielson poll tells the story about the Alaska Senate race. Governor Palin's "strongly favorable" rating exceeded Murkowski's "strongly favorable" rating by a huge margin. All Miller needed to win was everyone who had a "strongly favorable" opinion of Palin and he'd be close to victory. Winning those voters who had a "strongly favorable" opinion of Palin provided him 84% of his total vote.
