NJ.com has just posted an interview with the authors in Jersey Blogs by Kelly Heyboer. Broderick and Miller talk about why they chose to write such a book and what they learned in doing so. They touch on the influence of blogs and citizen journalism as well as the state of online news.

Alan Caruba, editor of Bookviews.com, recently reviewed Consider the Source: A Critical Guide to 100 Prominent News and Information Sites on the Web. Caruba, who will post the review on his site in September, wrote:

As a former journalist, I am a news junky. For me, the Internet is a cornucopia of news outlets, but even I have to ask myself which ones I trust most and this is especially true when I link to a story on a site I do not normally visit. Happily, I now have an excellent source to consult in James F. Broderick and Darren W. Miller’s guide, Consider the Source: A Critical Guide to 100 Prominent News and Information Sites on the Web ($24.95, Information Today, Inc., Medford, NJ, softcover). Among the sites evaluated are those by leading newspapers, American, British, Australian, and Indian, among others. There are many interesting and controversial sites such as Rush Limbaugh’s, Al Jazeera, and even the Central Intelligence Agency’s. Broderick teaches journalism at New Jersey City University in Jersey City and Miller has worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers in New Jersey and North Carolina, having won a number of journalism awards. Based on my own knowledge of news sources, I would say this is a fair-minded guide and one that journalists and consumers of the news will find of great value.

Consider the Source co-author discusses book, news and the Web at NC signing

Darren Miller, co-author of Consider the Source: A Critical Guide to 100 Prominent News and Information Sites on the Web, discussed the book with with readers on June 16 at Osondu Booksellers in Waynesville, N.C. After reading from the book's introduction, highlighting the reasons why and how Consider the Source came to be, Miller revealed the five sites of the 100 to receive top marks. He then explained why one site became a pleasant surprise while another fell woefully short of expectations. An engaging Q&A ensued, followed by a signing.

"Margaret Osondu was a great host, and she has a gem with this great independent bookstore," Miller said. "The audience asked some really interesting questions about things worth thinking about: the future of newspapers, the rankings of the sites, what makes a good provider of information, sparking some great discussions."

Consider the Source appeals to librarians, teachers at Book Expo America 2007 in NYC

Co-authors Darren Miller, left, and Jim Broderick signed copies of their book Consider the Source: A Critical Guide to 100 Prominent News and Information Sites on the Web for an hour on June 2 at Book Expo America 2007 in New York City. While signing more than 150 books, the authors received interest and positive feedback from a diverse group, with several saying that "this is a reference we've been waiting for" and that "we really need a book like this."

"It was a great way to debut the book," Miller said. "BEA provided an opportunity to gauge what interest there might be in the book."

Broderick agreed: "We were definitely encouraged by the response and interest from librarians and teachers—an audience that knows, from experience, whether a reference guide will be useful or not."

Book to Debut at Book Expo America

The official release of Consider the Source: A Critical Guide to 100 Prominent News and Information Sites on the Web is set for the first weekend of June at Book Expo America. From 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, the authors will sign copies of Consider the Source at the "Autographing Area" of convention, which is being held at Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

The book, published by Information Today is already available for purchase at various online bookstores, including Amazon.
