Every year, Decanter gives recognition to a select number of retailers for their quality of service and the range and value of wines they offer. This year, at the Decanter World Wine Awards ceremony held on September 1st, the award for Specialist Merchant of the Year went to Yapp Brothers for “its excellent, redesigned website, informative and beautifully produced wine list and attractive delivery terms”.
The judges felt that Yapp Brothers’ mainly-French range, particularly its Rhone, Loire and Provence variety, included some excellent producers.

Founded in 1969 by former dentist professional Robin Yapp and now sustained with equally unbridled passion by son Jason Yapp and stepson Tom, Yapp Brothers has always been at the forefront of bringing unique and delicious wines of exceptional quality to customers looking for something different. As The Daily Telegraph put it, “there are wines at Yapp Brothers that you simply can not find anywhere”.

The company also prides itself in providing outstanding customer service as well as offering wine and cellaring advice to its private customers. A supplier to several of the UK’s finest restaurants, Yapp Brothers is also known to host a wonderful variety of tastings and dinners in these establishments.

With its specialism in French wines, the judges felt that Yapp Brothers’ Mere-based outlet in Wiltshire was definitely “worth a visit for any Francophile” – although visiting the company’s superbly-designed website was the next best thing.

Production and export, French bubbles in crisis.
Italian sparkling wines go well

To cope with the crisis, this year the Champagne will reduce its production by 44 percent in the number of bottles. This vintage wine growers and bottlers of Champagne have decided to collect 32 percent of grapes less. And only 82 percent of the grapes can be bottled, the rest will be stored, waiting for a recovery of sales, resulting in a reduction of 44 percent in the number of bottles produced.

According to data of Coldiretti, it will instead be 300 millions the number of bottles produced by the Italian sparkling wine, while their cousins from beyond the Alps down to 260 million, sharply down from 322 million in 2008 and 339 million in 2007.

The historic reversal of the case – states Coldiretti – in the first year of production of Prosecco with a designation of origin (DOC) and Colli Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco and Prosecco Islanders (DOCG), which are rapidly gaining foreign markets .

Italians are better even in the export. Exports of French champagne have fallen by 41 per cent, while the export of Italian sparkling wines are up of 15 percent, says Coldiretti based on the data of the French Federation of Exporters of Wines and Spirits (LVEF) and the National Forum on sparkling wines for the first six months of 2009.

As a result of growth in foreign demand, exports of Italian sparkling wine abroad – continues Coldiretti – have exceeded domestic consumption by implementing a total annual turnover of over 2.5 billion euros for a production of over 300 million bottles.

This label is dedicated once again to the marriage between art and wine and in particular the relationship that is created in the first nine hundred of the movement of futurism and the transposition of certain works of art of this current art on the labels of wine which until then had been fairly anonymous.
This article is the result of our search for a beloved member of Giancarlo Santagostino Abbiategrasso.
Here we present the Green Label "Caldaro" which is a label of Claudio Cavazzana Cantine di Trento.
The company is no longer in business and has been consolidated since the second world war in another among the most important initiative.
The label is a copy of a set that includes (at least) Terlano (same colors) Marzemino and sweet Lambrusco (predominantly red) and Santa Maddalena Red Castelbarco (predominantly orange) and Negrara Valpolicella (blue / red) and Albana Passito (yellow and blue) to all’aceto (pink). Some specimens were diagonally soprastampati: "Red Castellar" on Negrara and Valpolicella, "White Castelmadruzzo" Passito on and on Albania.
All these labels have the same design and vary only the distribution of colors in different fields.
And one can certainly point out the novelty of this label and also the news that certainly stand out on a bottle today.
Were commissioned in the years 30 to Fortunato Depero that has put his signature in the small FD which is located in the corners of the label.
Fortunato Depero was born at the end dell’800 a fund, in Trentino, subject of the Habsburgs. He studied art and also practiced outside the home.
Attended – it was leading with Jacks and Balla – the cultural movement known as Futurism and in 1914 in Rome signed the Manifesto of Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe, which is distinct from the other posters Futurists in seeking a global dimension in the core the game is seen as liberating activities.
Many of his works, not only paintings, are collected in Casa Depero Museum in Rovereto (now the subject of the work of new production). Depero of works have been presented in recent years in several exhibitions (including Milan and Genoa) devoted to Futurism, a movement somewhat ‘forgotten in recent decades because of the sympathy that the Futurists dedicated to the emerging regime (1922).
Depero was brilliant artist and for him there tapestries, marquetry in cloth, furniture, billboards (Campari, San Pellegrino, Verzocchi, Unica) toys, also worked for the theater and, as you can see, even for the Cantine di Trento Claudio Cavezzani.

According to studies conducted in the first distillate has a composition that characterize and distinguish it from the bordering regions grappas

Results rather than positive in the direction of a product specification and certification of Grappa Veneta.

This emerges from the first steps of the research conducted under the project "Valgrave" (Protection and Enhancement of Grappa Veneta), started in late 2007 and which sees the collaboration between Institute Grappa Veneta, Veneto Agricoltura, Italian Wine Union and National Association of Tasters Grappa.

The research involving 10 distilleries, representative of the entire region, which were collected 36 samples of raw grappa and delivered to the laboratories of the Italian Wine of Verona, for isotopic analysis and gas chromatography.

The analysis revealed characters typical for each distillery for the content of the alcohol and the compounds detected by gas chromatography, while the combination of features (identified by isotopic analysis), probably indicates a composition different from that of neighboring regions, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

‘It is a very important project for producers veneti – Male says Alessandro, president of Grappa Veneta – Identify the chemical and organoleptic characteristics of grappa, create a panel, a committee of tasters can assess the main sensory characteristics are significant steps in the direction of the certifying Grappa Veneta with the objective to protect and enhance the regional product with benefits for consumers and producers the image of the region. "

Valgrave The project also provides for the formation of a panel of tasters to define the main characteristics of sensory Grappa Veneta, that during this first step of research, was attended by representatives of the National Tasters Grappa.

"For the first time also – concludes Male – associated producers are all united in a project that seeks the protection and enhancement of our product, with the crucial support of the Regione Veneto."

Feudi di San Marzano (Puglia

The evening will begin around 20:30, and the package for 8 wines with Italian specialties is 30 € all included.
Some notes on the regions visited:
Puglia: unknown region (the heel) is a major region in terms of quantity of wine produced, making it a key pillar of the economy of the area. Even if the quantity is not always the quality, the bulk of production is intended for development of table wine, more and more producers are working to offer quality wines, particularly around indigenous varietals 2 red, primitivo and Negroamaro.
Sicily: the Sicilian wine quality, less unknown, having long been geared towards producing a wine meant to be turned into an "international taste" (with high concentrations in particular), now appears to be heading towards the development of wine most representative of the soil of the island. The Nero d’Avola, wine from the same grape variety, is perhaps the best known of all, except for the wine that is mutated marsala.
Sardinia: this region is probably not at the forefront of the revival of Italian wine, initiated by Tuscany in 70 years, together more or less delayed by almost all other Italian regions. Sardinia a little slow to follow this trail – which is more lucrative than producing large returns. But, as often is the will of the producer who will create a good wine, and the Sardinian region have enough potential, it is not impossible to find excellent wines on the island, particularly in RFSO Cannonau di Sardegna (the grenache Cannonau being French).
