Lucky Dragons is the Los Angeles based collaborative musical project of Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara. Their performances are less of a concert and more of a happening that involves participation of the audience. While building layers of sound produced with pre-recorded loops and beats, the audience is given small instruments such as maracas and a lamellophone that are then run through a processor and make additional layers that have corresponding visuals.

They’ve been featured performers in the 2008 Whitney Biennial and at PS1’s Printed Matter Book Fair. Additionally, they host a drawing collective that is open to anyone who would like to participate called Sumi Ink Club.

Lucky Dragons’ new album, EXISTERS was released this week and is available in limited edition of 500 with a 24 page Risograph booklet and screen printed covers.

Here...

President Obama announced his budget proposal yesterday. Here are some of the highlights for federal arts funding in 2013: (You can see the full budget document here):

The budget for the NEA increased to $8 million (from $146M to $154M.)

While the NEA’s budget proposal increases several grant categories, it is the Our Town initiative that receives the most significant support: doubled from $5M to $10M. The Our Town Grant was introduced in 2011 with 51 grantees from 34 states receiving a total of $6.5M, one of which was New Orleans.

Donald Trump and his associates have won a bid to turn the current home of the NEA, the Old Post Office Pavilion into a luxury hotel. The NEA will be asked to relocate and has requested $3M to move to a new home. Seems a little excessive, huh.

The most competitive NEA grant category: Literature Fellowships with 3 percent of applicants receiving awards.

When Cummings began renovating the old building on the New Orleans riverfront near the corner of Montegut and Chartres Streets, he chose to preserve much of the graffiti that marked the walls, allowing the tagging to become part of the apartment’s character. Continuing the street art motif, Cummings created a wall of steel shipping containers at the edge of the property that he envisioned as a legal graffiti haven.

Joshua Caleb Weibley is an artist based in New York. His work is a love letter to drawing theory.

Contents of Archive Fever is in an ordinary white binder with what seems to be hundreds of pages blank pages save for one pencil line drawn across each page.

The first page of this book is an exact copy of the table of contents from Jacques Derrida’s Archive Fever. Each page thereafter has a singular, perfectly straight line that runs across the page, throughout the book, gradually making its way from the top of the pages in the beginning of the book to the bottom at the end. Upon closer inspection it would show that there is mild gradation in each line. This monotonous task was a deconstruction of the very table of contents, meticulously line by line, page by page, until the entirety of the first page is splayed out through the whole book.

A pamphlet is produced in conjunction with each exhibition that contains a dialogue between the artist(s) and the director of the gallery, or if you will the Diplomat (photographer & curator Chad Muthard).

This month: To the Ukraine!

Museum of Contemporary Art // David Hartt: Stray Light
David Hartt’s project Stray Light...

Museum of Contemporary Art // David Hartt: Stray Light

David Hartt’s project Stray Light inaugurates a new series of media-based exhibitions at the MCA called MCA Screen. Hartt, a Chicago-based Canadian artist, has been working with photographs for many years, attracted to the social, cultural, political, and economic complexities of the subjects he captures, rendering them with a cool, dispassionate eye. Stray Light includes a film displayed in a room carpeted in the style of his subject, the Johnson Publishing Company building in Chicago, as well as a group of photographs in an adjacent room. Granted unprecedented access to film and photograph in this John Moutoussamy–designed building after a long process of earning the trust of the owners, Hartt earnestly records the time-capsule nature of the space, which meticulously heeds to Arthur Elrod’s original 1971 interior design.

The building was purpose-built as the headquarters of this important publishing company, made famous by its Jet and Ebony magazine titles and its role as a leading arbiter of African-American taste and culture during the latter half of the 20th century. Moutoussany was an African-American partner in the firm Dubin, Dubin, Black, and the eleven-story building has an iconic presence on South Michigan Avenue with its illuminated Ebony-Jet marquee at the top of the building. The interior of the building is a clear and exuberant expression of Black taste, resolutely modern, colorful, and complex, a pure expression of founder John Johnson’s vision of what a leading, Black-owned business can be.

One of the finest architectural photographers in America, Robert...

One of the finest architectural photographers in America, Robert W.
