New York Times book editor Robert Dahl reviews 2 new books on the Constitution: The GENIUS OF AMERICA by Eric Lane and Michael Oreskes, and another about Madison’s goals in A MORE PERFECT CONSTITUTION By Larry J. Sabato.

“Could men with such varied ideas, prejudices and interests come together, fight for their views and then accept the outcome of the process?” asks Mr. Lane, a law professor at Hofstra University, and Mr. Oreskes, the executive editor of the International Herald Tribune, which is owned by The New York Times.

“In answering yes to this question,” they go on to say, “the framers created a new definition of public virtue. Before, public virtue had meant setting aside a self-interest to accept a general public interest. Now it assumed that Americans would pursue their self-interest within the halls of government.

CCR will flood the Oval Office with copies of the Constitution this holiday season. “For the last six years,” says Sanders, “it is clear that we have had a president that does not understand what the Constitution of the United States is about. What this president believes, essentially, is that he can do anything he wants, at any time, against anybody, in the name of fighting terrorism. And he happens to believe that the “war on terrorism” is unending; it’s going to go on indefinitely. And I think it is very important that we have an Attorney General who can explain the Constitution to a President who clearly does not understand it.

The next radical act occurred when 55 representatives of the 13 colonies gathered to improve on the Articles of Confederation and instead locked the doors, posted sentries, and proceeded to discuss, debate, and develop the most unprecedented document ever created as a blueprint for governing a nation. This radical document we know today as The Constitution for the United States of America. Never before in the history of mankind had such an approach been suggested, and then ratified. In setting this document in motion the United States of America became a country with a Constitution created to allow control of the Federal government to rest ultimately in the hands of the people, the whole of the people.
