Adding proper insulation underneath your metal roof is not only a great way to reduce your energy demands, but can also make your house a more comfortable place to live. The insulation will keep your home cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and help you save money on your heating and cooling bills. Insulation also helps prevent damage from moisture and mold formation. There are several different metal insulation options to choose from, depending on your needs and budget.

When choosing metal roof insulation for your house, it’s important that you consider the R-value (measure of thermal resistance) ratings of the material. Generally, the higher the R-value, the better the insulating material is. Another thing you need to keep in mind is how buildings lose of gain heat. There are three basic types of heat loss or gain: Conductive, radiant, and convective.

While metal is the most conductive of all roofing materials, conductive heat loss or gain is not a significant contributor to the overall heat loss/gain in buildings. Radiant and convective heat loss/gain are the biggest contributors to the total heat loss or gain in buildings with metal roofs. A good metal roofing insulation material should, therefore, have superior convective and radiant barrier capabilities. The following are the basic choices for metal roof insulation materials.

Metal Roof Insulation Options

1. Fiberglass batts.

Fiberglass batts offer one of the cheapest and easiest ways to insulate metal roofs. This insulating material consists of fine, thread-like glass formations that are woven together and mixed with other synthetic materials to form a rough, thick insulating pad. The “glass” in the material is the same basic substance used in glassware.

As an insulating material, fiberglass is very versatile. You can cut it into standard widths or any other width, and then fit it in accordance to your specific needs. The material can be placed directly under the metal panels, or it can be installed directly on an existing roof surface.

The only downside of fiberglass batts is that it’s not very safe to use. This is because; being made from fine glass strands, shards or small particles of glass are often formed. These microscopic bits of glass can be very damaging to your hands, eyes, and even lungs. When installing this type of insulation, you should wear protective clothing, such as masks, glasses and gloves, to avoid any side effects.

2. Spray foam.

This is one of the most common and effective metal roof insulation options. Polyurethane form insulation has a higher R-value per inch, and is very easy to work with. It can be used to insulate old or new metal roofs without causing any disruption, or the need for re-roofing. But it’s more expensive than fiberglass and polystyrene insulation.

Spray foam insulation is applied through high pressure spray machinery or pneumatic pump as a heated liquid. The foam is mixed with water before being sprayed under high pressure. As it reacts with oxygen in the air and the water dries up, the polyurethane foam expands, then hardens and cures within minutes, resulting in thick, rigid foam insulation.

Spray foam offers an excellent option for insulating crevices and awkward-shaped areas where other metal roof insulation options cannot work since it’s self-adhering. It also works great to prevent buildup of moisture as well as rodent and insect infestations.

Spray foam is commonly used together with polystyrene or fiberglass insulation. Unless you have experience in spray foam application, its installation is better left to a professional as using too much of it could damage the roof. However, there are some small kits that you can use for small DIY jobs at home.

3. Rigid board insulation.

This is a building material that is used to provide thermal resistance to roofs, walls, and even foundations. It’s comes in extruded or formed sheets or panels of varying sizes, made from polyurethane or polystyrene. The R-values for the materials are expressed per inch. So the thicker the material is, the higher the total R-value.

Sheets of rigid board insulation are typically placed under the metal roof panels. The sheets are fitted tightly together, and joints sealed or caulked for maximum thermal resistance. Being denser and thinner than other metal roof insulation options, it can be installed with fewer joints and gaps, which reduces air leakage.

Failure to do so could see your insulation, walls, flooring, woodwork, as well as doors and windows, become damaged too. Here is a simple, step-by-step roof restoration guide to get you started.

Metal roofing has become an increasingly popular option for both flat and pitched roofs. It’s extremely durable, energy-efficient, and fire-retardant. A metal roof can be made up of corrugated panels or standing-seam. It may also be configured to resemble other types of roofing, such as shingles, tiles or wood shakes. While metal roofing is generally very tough, it may develop leaks especially at the seams where the pieces of metal join together. Corrosion and rust as well as improper roof design may also slowly cause damage to a metal roof, resulting in leaks.

If the metal roofing on your house is damaged and/or has developed leaks, you need to undertake immediate restoration. Failure to do so could see your insulation, walls, flooring, woodwork, as well as doors and windows, become damaged too.

Here is a simple, step-by-step roof restoration guide to get you started.

1. Roof analysis.

The first step in metal roof restoration is figuring out the extent of the damage and the kind of repair work needed. The fixing required will depend on the type and slope of your roof, as well as the size of the damage. So get on your roof (with safety equipment), locate, and evaluate the specific problems you need to fix. This can be structural damage, corrosion and rust, and/or leaks.

When inspecting the roof, take precautions not to step on the weak parts of the roof such as seams. You can use a large board to spread your weight while walking on the roof. Leaks can be problematic to locate as water doesn’t always travel straight down. Sometimes, water can seep down the walls, follow the truss system, or just pool up within the moisture barrier until it gets an outlet. Don’t be surprised if the leak in your bedroom originated from a loose or separated seam over your bathroom. To identify possible sources of leaks, check and pay close attention to areas such as:

the J-rail

worn-looking or rusted areas

rubble buttons

seams and sealant

flashing around pipes, vents and skylights

Also, make sure you know about all past repair works done on your roof.

2. Preparation.

The actual metal roof restoration process starts with proper preparation of the affected part. This typically involves thorough cleaning, including removal of all dirt and debris prior to all work commencing. Once you have a clean, smooth surface, you can start the repair work. This step is very important, and it can have a bearing on the success of the entire project. So don’t skip it.

3. Repair

Your metal roof repairs will depend on:

the nature of the damage

roof type

metal roofing material

location of the problem

For small holes and rust spots, you can simply use a quality metal roofs sealant. Metal roofs sealants are very easy to use, and they provide a permanent solution to any leaks caused by small holes or rust spots, no matter the type of metal material used. All you need to do is to prepare the affected area, and apply the sealant according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

If the leaks are being caused by parted seams or small, narrow cracks, you can fill the spaces using a metal restoration system or good quality coating. Remove dirt on the affected area, and apply an aluminum base roof coating or any other restoration system. Ensure you apply the coating on both sides of the seam. Scrap off any loose or flaking coating using a putty knife.

For larger holes and badly corroded surfaces, you may need to patch the area using a piece of galvanized metal. Start by removing dirt and debris from the area to be patched. Scrape off any loose or flaking roof coating with a putty knife. Next, apply 2-inch wide strip of butyl tape around the affected area. The tape should be placed in such a way that it runs along the perimeter of your patch when you place it on top. Then, pre-drill holes through the patch, butyl tape, and the existing roof. Ensure the galvanized patch is flush with the metal roof surface before placing the screws to patch the area tight.

For extensive damage, you may have to cover the entire width of your roof as it’s easier and more effective than installing multiple metal patches. If the required repairs are beyond your scope, don’t shy from calling in a professional. Attempting such repairs can cause further problems later, as you don’t have the necessary knowledge and tools. Remember the repairs should only be undertaken in good weather. Lastly, a permit from the local authority may be required for re-roofing and other major metal roof restoration projects. But it may not be necessary for smaller repairs. Contact the city council or your local zoning authority to determine the exact stipulations prior to starting any work. If you intend to hire a metal roofing contractor for the repairs, you don’t have to worry about permits as they’ll get the necessary permits for you.

Metal roof designs are not a newfound exterior fabrication. Dating back to 970 B.C., a metal copper roof was used on the temple in Jerusalem, expanding into an island phenomenon later in the Virgin Islands. Metal roofs were highly valued for a number of reasons. Instilled with enough strength to endure earthquakes, metal roofs also withstood powerful winds of tropical hurricanes, while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing appearance. When joined with Dutch designed peaked-roofs and an adequate drainage system, metal purified water was then stored in a container for household usage. In addition, metal was beneficially incorporated with fire resistant properties.

Since 1892, when metal roof designs became cheaper and more accessible, its use has increased, making it a more practical and adaptable roofing choice. Additionally, metal roofing has continued to grow increasingly in popularity. The most up-to-date metal roofing techniques including coatings, automated roll-forming, fastening systems, and sealants, that have radically decreased the price of metal roofs and only amplified its resourcefulness as the amount of textures, styles, and colors have swelled.

What exactly is Metal Roofing?

Metal roofing is identified by a number of metal-based roof casings designed to supply edifices with protection from the elements, to permit sufficient drainage of water from roof surfaces, and to keep inhabitants and substances comfortable and dry. Metal roofing products can be found in a broad range of metals such as copper, aluminum, zinc, steel, titanium, and stainless steel. With its projected longevity, metal roofing is a much desired and sustainable building component.

Metal Roof Designs

There are two fundamental metal roof design categories; structural and non-structural, or architectural.

Structural

Structural metal roofing fastens directly on to lathe boards or purlins and requires no solid support underneath. Non-structural metal roof designs require a dense substrate underneath, characteristically plywood, metal roof deck, or oriented strand board. Metal roofing can also be either standing seam or through-fastened.

Structural metal roofing is broken-down into steep slope and low slope groupings. Low slope products are less dense than steep slope designs. Low slope constructed metal roofing entails overlapping or interlocking panels that proceed vertically on the roof surface. These designs can have a clear acrylic finish, mill-finish, or painted finish.

Steep slope anatomic metal roofing is available in either horizontal or vertical profiles. The vertical-panels are comprised of standing seam systems fastened to primary purlins with concealed fastening flanges or clips. A broad range of facsimile or ridged metal roofs that are affixed with uncovered fasteners straight through the metal roofing-panels are also available. These products interlock or overlap on their sides and end-laps for water tightness.

Non-Structural Metal Roofing Designs

Many non-structural metal roof-panels are created for roof pitches. Rather than disperse loads through to lathe boards or purlins underneath them, non-structural designs shifts loads to the roof deck underneath them. Non-structural systems are obtainable in a number of designs including corrugated, vertical standing seams, and tile profiles along with a broad range of horizontal panels. The horizontal panels replicate the appearance of wood shake, tile, slate, and standard shingles. The majority of non-structural metal roofing will consists of a finish for durability and aesthetics. Finishes include numerous aggregate stone and paint varnishes.

Metal Roofing Designs and Aesthetics

Various metal roofs used in metal roofing such as aluminum is utilized for its malleability and corrosion resistance. Aluminum roofing usually has a paint varnish or anodization applied for tint and additional hardiness. Stainless steel, zinc, and copper, are commonly used without additional coatings. Copper is utilized for its resilience and characteristic glaze. Zinc is also used for its corrosion resistant properties, modest gloss gray appearance, and malleability. Stainless steel is used to attain a long-lasting, silver metallic, radiant guise, or to suit demands of a remarkably corrosive environment.

Metal roof designs are available in a vast amount of hues. Their visual appeal is certainly impressive. Various hues such as terra cotta, colonial red, slate blue, forest green, charcoal grey, mansard brown, and teal blue, are just some of the stunning colors that make metal roofing so versatile and visually alluring. You will find metal roof designs on numerous buildings and residences creating interesting structural patterns. Whether the edifice is traditional, contemporary, or colonial, metal roofing suits any structure naturally. For example, a brown metal roof on a dwelling with white trim creates a striking contrast. Metal roofing benefits include wind resistance, fire resistance, low weight, durability, and all-around visually attractiveness.

Being the last line of defense against water leakage, proper roof flashing is an important part of the metal roof installation process. Flashing typically forms the joints, or intersections, and terminations of various metal roofing systems and surfaces, including roof-to-wall intersections, ridges, skylights, rakes, eaves, roof penetrations, chimneys, and valleys – where it directs rain water or snow down and off the roof.

Metal roof flashing must be configured to counter the three factors that cause water penetration: gravity, water surface tension, and wind pressure. This is usually achieved through the use of lapped-shingle design style, soldering or sealing to achieve a continuous surface. The flashing may also be designed using a non-continuous profile to resist surface tension.

When choosing flashing materials for corrugated or any other type of metal roof, it’s important to consider their durability, maintenance requirements, weather resistance, and ability to accommodate movement. Of course, such materials should also be compatible with metal or other adjacent roofing products.

The flashing materials that work best with metal roof installations include:

Aluminum

Aluminum flashing is one of the most popular options for metal roof systems. This is because it’s versatile, durable, and can be used for a wide variety of roof flashing applications including valley flashing, chimney flashing, base flashing, step flashing, and counter flashing.

Aluminum roof flashing comes in sheets, rolls, and pre-fabricated shapes for specific projects such as flashing for drip edges. It is also available in varying thickness, with the thicker options being more resistant to elements.

Aluminum flashing is available in both standard (mill) finish and factory paint finishes such as white and bronze.

Mill- or paint-finished aluminum flushing works amazingly well with field-applied paint, allowing you flexibility when it comes to selecting your desired finish.

The main problem that is associated with aluminum flushing is that it cannot be field soldered. This makes it hard to make water-tight seams. To create a barrier that is impossible for water to penetrate, you must lap joints and fasten them mechanically. You may also have to undertake additional caulking using a high performance sealant to prevent leakage.

Remember, it’s important that you use compatible aluminum nails to avoid galvanic action, which occurs between dissimilar materials like aluminum and steel nails leading to deterioration.

Pros

Although it does not come cheap, aluminum is affordable as it’s in the mid-cost range of flashing materials.

Aluminum is a soft and workable material, allowing you create different forms that hold their shape well to meet your specific needs.

Pre-fabricated aluminum drip edges make for quick and effective installation.

Cons

When left uncoated, aluminum flashings are susceptible to different elements such as acid rain, excessive heat, salt air, heavy snows and strong, scouring winds.

Aluminum cannot be installed on metal roofing, where they may come in direct with mortar, concrete, fiber-cement sidings and trims, as the alkalinity in such materials can cause corrosion.

Making watertight joints and laps demands the experience and skills of a professional, as well as costly high-quality sealants.

Galvanized Steel

Manufactured by coating sheet steel with a layer of zinc alloy, galvanized steel is a very common flashing material used in metal roof systems. It is available in both rolls and pre-formed shapes. Typical galvanized steel flashing applications include: chimney flashing, counter flashing, base flashing, and valley flashing.

Galvanized nails are recommended for installation so as to avoid corrosion.

Pros

This is the cheapest of all metal roof flashing options.

Being a rigid material, you can mold it into permanent three-dimensional shapes.

By removing the thin layer of oil coating, you can use paint and a suitable primer to hide the raw silver sheen in exposed applications.

Pre-fabricated shapes make flashing installation very easy and quick.

Cons

This is probably the least durable of all flashings for metal roof installations. It corrodes very easily, especially when exposed to harsh environments. Contact with raw or treated lumber may also cause rust.

It’s a stiff and non-malleable material, making it difficult to form and work with.

It’s hard to form custom fabrications as it cannot be field soldered.

To avoid some of these shortcomings, you should use more advanced variants of galvanized steel such as GALVALUME, ZINCALUME, or COLORBOND. These materials are designed using proprietary technologies – which make them considerably more durable compared to ordinary galvanized steel and this is what we recommend.

Stainless Steel

This is an extremely durable flashing material, and a perfect choice for harsh climates.

Pros

It’s very tough, and least affected by typical elements such as salt spray and acid rain.

It’s not negatively affected by contact with concrete or masonry mortar.

Maintains its corrosion resistance, even when cut.

Can be field soldered (using a special type of solder and after etching of surfaces to be joined).

Cons

Generally, it’s not available in preformed shapes

It’s relatively expensive

Being very stiff and rigid material, it’s virtually impossible to bend or shape using the typical roofer’s brake, meaning shop fabrication is the only option.

For those who are considering adding a metal roof to their home or business knowing what metal roofing options are available is important in helping you to make the right choice. So here is a look at some of the options that are available today.

Custom Orb

Custom Orb is what is normally called corrugated roofing. This roofing is folded into furrows and ridges. Normally when one thinks of corrugated roofing, they think of those old metal buildings with rusted roofs, normally used to store machinery and other objects. A 5-degree pitch is the minimum that this style of roofing is suitable for. However, while custom orb is corrugated new technology has resulted in the use of color bond, and a variety of different metals that makes these roofs long lasting and great looking.

Trimdek

Trimdek is one of the more popular metal roofing profile options as this type of cladding is square and fluted giving the appearance of slats once it is placed on a roof. It gives any building a neat tidy looks and is suitable to be used on roof pitches that are as small as 2 degrees. Comes in an array of colors.

Klip-Loc

The Klip-Loc style looks pretty much like the trimdek with the exception that the raised areas are a little taller and the valleys in the metal are spaced wider apart. Once this profile is on a building and seen from a distance it gives the appearance of a wide slatted roof. Like all of the other metal roofing profiles options Klip-loc comes in a wide variety of color bond shades. If your roof pitch is more than 2 degrees this option would be the perfect choice.

Spandek

Spandek is a more modern and cleaner style of corrugated roofing. The top of the folds of metal are squared off rather than rounded and once on a building gives the appearance of almost solid sheet with lines in the roof. This is a very stylish and modern style of roof that can be used on pitches as little as as just 3 degrees.

Flatdek

This is a long span cladding that works especially well for carports and other types of flat or nearly flat roofs. This metal roofing profiles option offers a finished underside that has a nice gloss finish.

Panelrib

Panelrib cladding is pretty much what the name sounds like. They are wide panels with ribs every so often giving the roof of your home, a clean and neat appearance. This option works well for buildings with only a slight pitch.

To get a better idea of just how each of these metal roofing profiles options look speak to a metal roofing contractor that can show you samples of each of these profile options. They can also show you photos of how each of these options actually look on buildings. The contractor can also give you an estimate as to the cost of each option so that you will be able to make a more informed choice of just which type of metal roofing profiles option is right for you.

If you have been considering getting a new roof and have been doing a bit of research, then the term “Metal roofing systems” may have appeared throughout your reading. It can sound a bit frightening and conjures up images of something extremely expensive and complicated. The simple truth is, there is really nothing frightening or scary about them. So what are they?

Metal Roofing Systems Defined

A roofing system is simply the type of roofing that you choose. In other words it can be interlocking shingles, metal sheet, standing seam roofing, metal tiles, or metal shake.

Advantages

Metal roofing systems have several distinct advantages over other types of roofing. Here are some of those advantages.

Long lasting. In some cases, you will never need to have another roof put on your house for the rest of your life. A roof made from metal can last 50 years or longer and need little maintenance during their lifetime.

Comes in a variety of styles and colors suitable for almost every type of home no matter where that home is located.

More weather resistant than other types of roofs. Prevents ice dams, and are more resistant to wind and rain and extreme heat than other types of roofing materials.

When properly installed, extremely energy efficient and some of these roofs even come with energy star ratings.

Are They Worth the Price?

People who are considering these types of systems often ask themselves whether they are worth the price. When you consider that metal roofing systems can not only pay for themselves over time in energy savings, but also with lesser maintenance requirements, it may well be worth your money, especially if you look long term.

Should Your Hire a Professional Roofer to Install Your New Roof?

While it is possible to install some roofing systems yourself, hiring a professional with experience to do the job may result in more savings and a longer lasting roof. These professionals have experience at installing these systems and therefore are less likely to make mistakes that will end up costing you both time and money.

No matter which system you choose, metal roofing can improve the looks and value of your home as well as result in energy savings and those roofing maintenance costs. Anyone who needs a new roof, should take a look at the different systems to see if they are right for their home and needs.

If you own your house for any amount of time chances are you are either going to have to repair or replace your roof. Whether you choose to do the repairs yourself or hire a contractor to work on your roof, knowing the common roofing terms will help you to understand what needs to be done and why. Here are some of the most common roofing terms and their definitions.

Shingles – A shingle is a thin oblong piece of material that is laid in overlapping rows on your roof and provides a covering to keep out the rain and elements. Asphalt shingles are the most common type of shingles.

Starter -The very first layer of shingles around the bottom of roof’s perimeter. Shingles begin at the lower edge of the roof and are layered upward.

Roofing Tiles – Roofing tiles are preformed baked slabs of material that are laid in rows and serve the same function as shingles. Roofing tiles can be made from a variety of materials.

Metal Roofing Sheets – Metal roofing sheets replace the shingles or roofing tiles on a home.

Cupping – Shingles improperly installed over existing shingles or other roofing material causing the roof to become easily damaged. Many do it yourself roofers make the mistake of layering new roofing materials over old.

Sheathing – Also referred to as the deck is usually plywood or OSB board to which the roofing materials are attached. The sheathing is attached to rafters.

Dormer – A small structure (usually having a window) that projects from a slanted roof. A Dormer has it’s own little roof that ties into the main part of the buildings roof.

Valley – When two slanted roofs meet at their lower end (plane) and form a dip or valley.

Drip edge – A drip edge is an L shaped strip that is installed along the edges of the roof, to allow water to drip clear of the eaves. Most drip edges of made of metal.

Gutter – A gutter is a U shaped unit that is designed to catch water running off the roof and then guides the water to run out from a corner of the gutter away from the entry ways of the house.

Eave – The Horizontal edge of a sloped roof.

Cornice – Horizontal molding that crowns a building.

Fascia – Also referred to as Fascia board is a band or board that located at the cornices outer edge.

Underlayment – Underlayment also called felt or tar paper is used as a secondary layer of protection between the shingles, or tiles and the sheathing.

Flashing – Strips of metal that are used to keep water from seeping around chimneys, vent pipes and building up in the roof’s valleys.

Louvers -Slatted devices installed in a soffit to ventilate the space below the roof deck.

Rafters – The boards that make up the supporting framework of the roof.

Rake – The inclined portion of the roof that extends over the buildings wall.

Ridge – The top edge where two sides of a slanting roof join together.

Slope – the number of inches a roof rises for every foot of horizontal distance. The steeper the roof the more difficult it may be to repair.

Fire rating – The ability that a roof has to withstand fire from an external source.

Ice Dams – Melted snow that refreezes along the lower edge of the roof . Eventually water from these ice dams can seep under roofing materials.

There are many more roofing terms that would be helpful to know, but knowing these common roofing terms will help you to better understand your roofing contractor or understand what you need to do your own roof repair.

Replacing the roof of your home can be an extremely expensive endeavor costing thousands of dollars.

Which makes it a good idea to do everything you can to make that roof you have last as many years as possible. Doing something as simple as inspecting your roof twice a year can help you find small problems and get them fixed before they become big problems that requires the expertise of a professional roofer and an entire new roof. Learning what to look for when inspecting your roof can save you a lot of money and headaches as well.

The Best Time To Inspect Your Roof

A complete inspection of your roof should be done twice a year. In the spring immediately after the snow melts and again in the fall before winter hits. Smaller and quicker inspections should be done after a large storm with a lot of wind.

Start With An Inside Inspection

Your roof inspections should actually begin on the inside of your home. You should walk around your house and check all the corners to make sure that there are no bulges or stains left by water. Make sure that you look in the closets as well as main living areas.

If you have an attic or crawl space you should make sure to inspect this area. Look for any damp spots or signs of leakage. Inspect the tiles to see if they show signs of water damage and if possible check any fiberglass insulation for sagging or dampness. If there is any signs of water on the inside of your home chances are good that there has been damage to your roof. If there is no inside damage you still need inspect the outside of your roof.

Inspecting Your Roof From the Outside

You should start your inspection of your roof from the outside simply by standing in various places around your house and looking up at your roof. Look for:

Any overhanging tree branches as these pose a hazard and should be trimmed back before they cause damage.

Look for any debris on the roof as this will need to be removed, and the area checked for damage.

You should also look for any missing, broken, worn or loose tiles or shingles, bare spots on gravel roofs or rust spots on metal roofs. Also note any tiles or shingles that don’t seem to be lying flat as they should. These will all need to be inspected closer or replaced.

Walk around the entire outside of your house and check the fascia board and soffits and make sure that they are in good repair.

You will also want to check the edge metal to make sure it is unbent and in place.

Once you have completed this you are ready to do a closer inspection of your roof using binoculars or a ladder. A ladder works best as it gets you on height with the roof so that you can see things better.

Check the gutters and rain spouts and make sure they are free of debris and in good repair.

Check all the flashings as well.

If you have a shingled roof look over the shingles well and make sure that none of the shingle nail are sticking up or missing. If they are these will need to be replaced and sealed. For those with gravel type roofs look for any spots where the gravel has worn off or is thin.

Look for any black spots that may mean mold or mildew has begun to take hold.

Make sure that the valleys are well sealed.

Check the mortar around all chimneys and parapet walls for cracks or lose mortar.

Check and see if the any tar paper is visible.

When inspecting your roof, make note of any problems that you find and where they are located. Remember not to walk on your roof unless it is absolutely necessary to do to make repairs or to inspect something you are unable to view any other way. As walking on the roof can cause further damage to it.

Once you have completed all your repairs, then you should do one more inspection looking for anything you might have missed. While this may be somewhat time consuming it will be better in the long run than having to replace your roof because you overlooked what seemed to be a minor concern.

By inspecting your roof twice a year and knowing what to look for when you do your inspections you can help to increase the life span of your roof by several years in many cases. In addition, you can rest assured that your home and your family is well protected from the damage that can be caused by poor or damaged roofing.

About Metal Roof Insulation

Metal Roof Insulation

Although metal is a simple and inexpensive material used in roofing structures, it actually has relatively poor thermal insulation qualities, so the un-insulated metal roofing may leave a building structure exposed to harsh climatic conditions. Without proper insulation, the building could become extremely hot during summer season and cold during wintertime. Insulating a metal roof provides an effective barrier against temperature changes and helps to keep the heat in and the cold out. It also provides a means of reducing compression that is formed near the base of a metal roof due to variations in humidity, temperature, and other factors.

Types of Metal Roof Insulation

There are various technologies used in insulating a metal roof. Some newer technologies include spray foam insulation and thermal insulation. In spray foam insulation, a mixture consisting of Isocyanate and resin is put into a gun and is sprayed onto concrete slabs, roof tiles, wall cavities as well as holes or openings present in the finished wall. This insulation can help a metal roof to maintain a consistent temperature and humidity level within a building while helping to conserve energy and expand the life of the roof. Similarly, thermal insulation can be done through special methods. This type of insulation provides a region in which the conduction of heat is reduced and heat radiation is reflected instead of absorbed by the building.

The Benefits

Metal roof insulation keeps your home and buildings warmer in the winter Metal roof insulation, being a heat barrier, works on a simple principle; it reflects all the heat back to its original source. This means that during winter season, there is less radiant heat loss through the roof and attic, resulting in the retention of heat inside the building. Metal roofing insulation in your home and building can help make your living situation more cozy and comfortable. It also helps to reduce your heating and energy costs.

It Keeps Your Homes and Buildings Cooler During Summer

During long and hot summer days, an insulated metal roof reflects the radiant heat away from your roof and attic, keeping it from gathering inside your building. During hot weather, more than 93 percent of heat is radiant. Again, insulated metal roofs keep your building cooler by slowing down the process of heat gain. Reduction in energy costs and utility bills

Metal roof insulation can help cut energy costs significantly and reduce the amount usually spent on utility bills. Studies conducted by the US Department of Energy shows that more than 40 percent of an average sized home’s energy is lost as a consequence of air infiltration through windows, doorways and even walls. However, buildings that are treated with metal roof insulation minimize this process and help you save on energy costs.

Help in Earning Tax Credits

In some jurisdictions of United States, a person can earn tax credits on property taxes, if the roof is constructed using energy saving insulation materials and is successfully installed by some reputable service providers. The tax ordinance further states that if the roof is installed during 2012 or you are intending to add it in 2013, then you will become eligible for an energy tax credit of $500. There are also a variety of other tax credits available for commercial buildings.

Increases Your Building’s Resale Value

Quality metal roofing insulation, unquestionably, improves the resale value of your home as well as commercial buildings. It protects the building from physical wear and tear, making them look new and clean. It does not allow the building to depreciate but revalue it.

Provides Protection Against Moisture

Metal roof insulation safeguards the building against humidity and moisture, which provides an additional advantage by reducing the chances of growth of harmful mildew and mold inside the building. Reducing mildew growth also minimizes the chances of rotting wood or the spread of allergy-inducing mold and fungus.

Reduces Noise Pollution

In addition to controlling temperature, humidity and moisture inside the building, there is another advantage of installing metal roof insulation in your building, i.e. it also has the ability to absorb and shield against. These roofs act as a barrier to air borne sounds and thus help in reducing noise pollution. The benefits of metal roof insulation are numerous and it is apparent that opting for this type of roofing will help consumers save money while increasing their overall comfort for years to come.

Rain gutters are a part of the house that a lot of people don’t give much thought to until something goes wrong. The purpose of your rain gutters is to channel water away from your house when it rains. When your rain gutters are clogged or damaged, the water running off of your roof is not directed away from your home the way it is supposed to be, and this can actually lead to a number of problems. Rain gutters that are not properly maintained could lead to leaks in your basement, damage to your siding, even cracks in the walls or foundation.

They say prevention is the best medicine and because small problems have a way of becoming big problems, it’s best to do whatever you can to prevent damage from occurring in the first place. If your rain gutters are damaged, you need to repair the damage as quickly as possible. On this page we are going to give you some quick tips for rain gutter repair and maintenance so that you can avoid more costly repairs later on.

Preventing Problems With Your Gutters

To prevent damage to your rain gutters, you need to inspect your rain gutters at least a couple of times per year. Walk around your house looking for any obvious signs of damage. If you see holes or cracks in the rain gutters, those will need to be fixed. If there are no obvious signs of damage, you will still want to make sure that the rain gutters are functioning properly. You can turn on your hose and run some water through the rain gutters to make sure that the water is draining properly through the downspouts.

Taking Care of Clogs

One of the most common problems that people have with rain gutters is that clogs will occur. Leaves, twigs, and other debris can get into your rain gutters and clog them. If your rain gutters are not draining properly you will need to get up on a ladder and remove whatever debris is blocking the flow of water.

Repairing Minor Damage

Sometimes rain gutters suffer damage simply by being exposed to the elements. Over time, rain gutters can sag just because gravity is pulling on them. If you notice one section of your rain gutter is sagging, you will have to adjust the height in certain spots to make sure that the water flows freely. If you notice any cracks or holes in your rain gutters, you can patch cracks and small holes with silicone caulking or other products that are designed specifically for gutter repair and maintenance.

Fixing Bigger Problems

When damage to your rain gutters is too great to be fixed with a simple patch, you may need to replace a section of your rain gutters. This can usually be accomplished fairly easily by simply cutting away the damaged section and replacing it with a new piece. A new piece of rain gutter should overlap the old rain gutter by 2 inches on each side. You can screw the new piece into the existing rain gutter and then be sure to seal around the screws and also seal the seams created when putting the new piece in.

Rain gutter repair and maintenance is something that most homeowners can handle as a do-it-yourself project. However, if you feel like you need a little help, you can always use the services of a reputable contractor to get the job done.
