Many thanks for this, it's such a common problem where people think they can trick Google by placing unrelated keywords to body text. It just looks wrong and does not work! Honesty is and always will be the best policy!

I truly believe that advertising is definitely part of the intent. Having a good intent people will like it and interested of it. On my own perspective I will foucs on teaching and create more useful content so that as a blogger many people would read and follow my blogs. Aside from this, it must be informative.

I just found a new author I had never heard of before who made a very similar point: http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2011/09/love-your-customers/

The ideas I come away with are that the best customers are people you can be friends with. How awesome would it be to have a customer base who you're inspired to be with?

This is what we are creating.

Hi David, advertising is definitely part of the intent. Were it not for advertising, many wouldn't bother creating content. So the question I'm posing is whether or not the advertising is the focus of the content creation? If one focuses on teaching they still get the benefit of advertising, so they may as well focus on teaching and create more useful content.

This is where intention makes a difference. Someone simply trying to advertise may not give their best effort when it comes to teaching. However, a true teacher will give all they can in the form of quality content. And arguably, that results in better advertising, anyway.

My company produces tons of content for clients and we often have to scale back from positioning the piece as advertising. In fact, though, that's the key to content creation - it must point toward a client while being informative and interesting. No one should kid themselves that this isn't a part of the intent. Nice blog - my first visit. I'll be back.

Darin (if that isn't just your hacker conference pseudonym ;-) ), I agree with you. Some folks are quite mean-spirited and it is much better for someone well intentioned to point out a vulnerability than to have someone bent on harm to get in the house.

Integrity is like amperage. You need so many amps of integrity to do A, B, and C. If you don't have enough to also do D, all of them can suffer. To head this off, you can do an "integrity" check up front. When counting the cost, you can determine if you have enough time/energy/money/resources. But the big question is, do you have enough integrity?
