This digital microscope made from a cellphone and $10 in parts could revolutionize bush medicine.

First there was the One Laptop Per Child laptop for under $100, now an engineer has created a $10 do it yourself microscope out of a cellphone!

The vision of engineering professor Aydogan Ozcan of UCLA, the microscope uses a cellphone and ten dollars ($10) of off the shelf parts. The idea is pretty groundbreaking and could help doctors who seek to diagnose illnesses in the “bush” areas of the third world where sophisticated lab equipment simply isn’t available.

The idea is pretty ingenious. Rather than take a slide and magnify it, the cellphone microsope can image the slide sample and send it wirelessly to the nearest hospital laboratory. But with special “app” software developed by Ozcan, the cellphones can also detect abnormal shaping of bloodcells which could show signs of infection.

And there’s even a special microscope box which can connect to a cellphone which can then transmit the data where it needs to go.

“There’s no need for regular microscope lenses anymore because the software can magnify the cells electronically,” said Ozcan, “by creating a hologram that can image several cells at the same time and analyze how they interact. We can learn a lot in seconds.”

And in a world where infectious disease can strike hundreds in a few hours, this invention can save lives to boot. My only question is, when will we see the iPhone app?

Laptop bags are rarely something worth mentioning.  Sure, they protect your precious laptop, but besides having a different color of material, they’re not that interesting.  Well this bag actually does offer up an extra twist to help those out that take their laptop more places than to a tidy little office every single day.  This one will protect it more from the great outdoors than those other laptop bags will.

I suppose this is why most of the newer computers have card-reading slots. Too bad I don’t have one of those. I did have access to the Belkin Universal Media Reader, and I’m now able to get all my scattered files into one convenient place.

The Universal Media Reader allows the user to drag and drop files from one place to another place, whether it be to or from your computer, or simply exchanging files from one card to the other. It supports all kinds of card formats including MS/MS Duo, SD/MMC/MiniSD, M2, SmartMedia/xD, CF/Microdrive, and Micro SD.

It attaches to the computer via USB, and comes with the software to make it work. Yeah, it really isn’t a “plug and play” gadget per se, and I was actually hoping we could have skipped the CD Rom step. I also don’t understand why it comes with two USB cables (one long and one short), but hey, pick the one you want to use.

You should also pick your color. It comes in white or black, and is available for purchasing on the Belkin website for about $49.99.

I suppose this is why the Fridge Locker was invented, to keep that pesky roommate away from your cold hard stash. Yes, that might settle a dispute between you and your live-in friend, but you might hear this bit of whining afterward: “A Fridge Locker? Aw man, it’s like you don’t even trust me”.

Cody would definitely not be the audience for the Sumo Canvas Clock Bomb, for he would be forced to look at a bomb that would tell the time. Just to let you know, the ticking clock counts down to nothing and there is no explosives set to go off at a certain time. It’s just there to show you the time that is ticking away second by horrific second.

There’s no real complex tech going on with this gadget. It’s just a photo of a bomb that has a real clock face. In all honesty, I am surprised that they did not use a digital clock with red numbers. After all, if there is one thing that movies and television has taught us, it’s that all bombs have little red numbers that tell us when they are about to go off.

Some people have this astounding ability to take a bowling ball and actually knock down all of the pins.  For those of us that don’t have that ability, there’s finally the RC900.  It’ll make sure those pesky bowling pins finally get knocked down where they belong.  This bowling ball is controlled by a remote and is easily able to dodge all kings of obstacles, like the gutter for example.

Alright, so it’s actually marketed towards kids and those with physical limitations.  Lack of hand-eye coordination is a physical limitation, right?  The bowling ball is able to steer by adjusting the position of the weight screwed onto a threaded shaft within the ball.  The sad news is, it’s a pretty obvious remote control, so there’s no way to fake out your friends on this one.  Plus it’ll cost you $1500 from 900 Global.

IDEO has decided to look towards a band aid-like device complete with a bulls eye and an attached tab. A simple press at the center while pulling the tab will help draw an abrasive strip across the skin, leaving an ink mark simultnaeously so that one knows the exact place to put the vaccine patch. Currently, the application device and patch are being manufactured via standard processes and materials in order to make them cheaper to manufacture in developing countries – hopefully a high level of quality control will be maintained then.
