I’ve finished Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs (which was lent by Shari, thanks a lot) and I must say it wasn’t a satisfying read. It was fun, sure, and I don’t really care about the controversies of whether or not it’s non-fiction (but of course it would be nice if it’s non-fiction, ‘coz if not I’ll shred the author to pieces by inventing everything in it).

It was about Augusten’s childhood and his hatred for his father, and his being gay, and his being engaged with a thirty year-old Neil Bookman, and his living in a crazy house. It’s his world, and in his world you can throw stones at the ceiling or eat dog food (one of the characters liked it, and they all liked it actually). It’s… preposterously funny.

One thing I liked about this book is Augusten’s (the protagonist’s) disgust over the things that society dictates us. It’s probably Taoist, the way he considers society as some sort of an evil, but in my own opinion, he’s somehow true. He’s a carefree, damn-the-torpedo kind of a guy who isn’t even scared with what he might look like. Somehow, this book taught me the idea of how society manipulates our life, and how–in one way or another–it affects our dreams and perceptions, and ourselves as well. I mean, I’ve read The Catcher in the Rye and all, but I think this one sort of polished that perception.

It was hilarious, though I can’t help but think that it’s so fucking absurd and hilarious to the point that it’s too good to be true. You do have the right to cast a doubtful eye on this book (the way I did) but after some point, I thought it wouldn’t make such difference.

–

I still haven’t laid my eyes on the other books Shari lent me (The Muse Asylum by David Czuchlewski and Seymour, An Introduction–though I’ve read Raise High The Roof Beam, Carpenters, both by J.D. Salinger). I’d rather write a back-to-back book review about that. Seymour is hard to comprehend, really!!!

–

Another book I’ve read (after two months, LOL) is One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. I found it at Booksale and was shocked after picking it at the bookshelf, since I’m very certain it’s one of the titles Time Magazine enlisted as one of the Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. I knew it would be a good read!

Bromden (a half American-Indian) is the narrator of the story. He faked his being deaf-mute, since he knew being “cagey” (one word I would always remember in this novel) is the safest thing to do, and that it was harmless. The story is set in an Oregon asylum (this novel included two suicides, bah!) with Bromden living for three years there, when one day, Randle Patrick McMurphy–donning his cowboy attire and his passion for gambling and sex–entered the ward and defied every rule the Big Nurse (the antagonist) provided for the pseudo-betterment of the ward.

The book tours you along hundreds of pages of human behavior, like a crash-course in Pscyhology (only, there were no technicalities in it). It was a life in the asylum. The life before and after McMurphy came around.

The climax was–in every sense of the word–shocking. A twist I hadn’t really expected.

What I wanted to know is: why delay the climax! It’s at the fourth part of the book (the book has four parts) and twenty pages to go before it ends!!! It’s crazy. You have to go through everything that’s happening in the mental ward and how tough McMurphy is becoming as days go by and bets go high, until the flashbacks of his childhood had burnt a hole in his manly figure, that it had left an inescapable void of nostalgia and loneliness that markedly leaves his face pallid and sorrowful.

But still, the climax wiped away my remonstrations about the book. It wasn’t dramatic. It was abrupt. It was all in a sudden, boom! and all the strength McMurphy ha

The book was incredibly long and the font size would kill you (or at least, in the version I bought). One kick of your bedpost and you’ll get headaches from dizziness, seriously. It’s the type of a book you had to squint just to be able to check if what you’re reading is right. The font size suddenly killed my desire to read the book–any book, actually–and decided to shelf it first for days… and the days became months. Two months after I decided to pull it out from the shelf.

Now, I wanted to blame myself for delaying to read such a wonderful book.

Revisiting old songs,

thanks to geekyrappinghood!

Beauty Products For Moms-To-Be

Women go through a lot of hormonal and physical changes during pregnancy. Beaute de Maman is a great beauty solution especially formulated to treat various physiological and hormonal changes experienced by pregnant women.
