I flailed quite a lot at the screening too.

But I am a professional* critic, and so I will critique the movie despite this.

Star Trek Into Darkness – terrible title by the way – has major Second Release Syndrome. It wants to please fans of the source material, newcomers, the old the young and the bloggers [of which there were many at the screening].

The film must be making an attempt for the most fan service in one film, and has probably won some kind of medal in this field. I can’t say it wasn’t nice, hearing classic quotes and kinda knowing where the story was going before you got to the spoilers, but this does not mean the film is perfect.

The film has pacing problems. Due to wanting so much squished into 2 hours, the action scenes almost seem to be interrupted by the need to have some moments to fill in the plot and attempt to make you have an emotional connection to the story. The only emotion performances come from [funnily enough] Cumberbatch and Quinto, with one other short other scene [no spoilers] setting up the battles ahead.

The film is beautiful and the CGI has obviously had a lot of time/money effort put in. I saw the film in IMAX 3D, and it really did give a sense of the size, depth, and at times emptiness of space. It also got to show off the size of the spaceships and the detail that went into them. Unfortunately though it also shows off every detail of a person and let me tell you despite being good looking movie stars still have large pores! But kudos to them for being brave enough to have their face blown up to IMAX size.

The action scenes are fast paced, big, and engaging. I wanted more. I wanted them to skip over the quiet, slow, plot driven scenes to get back into the action. That’s what an action movie should be though right – a device for these big, daring, fun scenes of chaos and destruction and punching people in the face. It’s a popcorn movie while the action is on – you’re staring, shovelling the popcorn in just transfixed by the action. But when the action stops you start to wonder how much is left and whether you need to get another drink or if you need to go to the bathroom. But you might miss a reference if you leave!

I’d certainly watch the film again and enjoy it.

Sam Raimi’s return to films after Drag me to Hell and that last Spiderman film (the one with Tobey Maguire, not the new one) is a fantastical journey into the magial land of L. Frank Baum’s creation, OZ. It looks very pretty, but i can’t get past a certain feeling of Alice in Wonderland.  Will it have more soul than that Tim Burton fantasy? This remains to be seen… But it sure looks interesting!

Synopsis:

The story follows an old school arcade style bad guy named Ralph, who is a 9 feet tall, 640 pound character that lives in a pile of garbage. His job in the video game is to destroy cities that will only to be built back up again by the good guy with a magic hammer named Felix. Ralph is jealous of all the attention that Felix gets because he is the hero. Ralph goes on an adventure around the arcade he lives in, jumping from game to game looking for a way to prove that he can be a good guy and a hero. Of course, he just doesn’t fit in with any of the games. Ralph isn’t content with his fate of being a villain. Some of the games he jumps in on are a Halo type video game and a game called Sugar Rush, which poses a threat to the arcade in which Ralph resides. 

It’s directed by Rich Moore (The Simpsons) and also features the voices of Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch. The movie is in theaters in 3D on November 2nd (US date).

Will you be inserting your coin? Or will this be a cabinet that gathers dust in the corner?  Feedback folks!

I’m going to give you this review from two different and often times conflicting parts of my brain. Being a review on a pop-culture website, it’s safe to assume that many of you reading this (if not all of you) are fans of ALIEN and possibly the films it spawned, and you’re already likely aware of the “is it or isn’t it” status as a prequel to that series that continues to be up in the air in spite of having seen release in the UK over a week ago. I’m like you. I’m a tremendous fan of ALIEN (yes… over ALIENS), and I feel that may have been a distraction when I first saw Prometheus. Even the nagging notion that it may only be carrying the tiniest of threads across from a distant part of that saga’s universe became detrimental to the film experience, so to all those wondering the same: I say thee nay!

Forget ALIEN. Forget all of that. You’ve seen the trailers, you know it’s about the Space Jockeys glimpsed briefly in the original, so you know they’re connected, but that’s the extent of it. Just go in and let the film tell its story.

The problem I had going into Prometheus as a fan of ALIEN and someone well versed in the various factions of that universe was that the fast paced nature of the film when it really starts moving meant that my mind was constantly looking for links. It was racing ahead, predicting with varying degrees of accuracy where each tiny detail was potentially going. I was racing ahead of the film, but at the same time I was trying to keep up, so initially the film felt more hectic than it actually is purely because of my own state of mind.

There were things I picked up on in the first round that served me well in the second, and I’ll gladly admit that being able to absorb Prometheus without the hype it’s generated or the films that supposedly preceded it weighing on my mind and knowing what to pay attention to certainly made the second spin around the block much more enjoyable, but had I gone in and just let the story tell me what it wanted to, rather than what I was expecting it to, I certainly would’ve enjoyed it much more than I did. Don’t get me wrong either; I LOVED Prometheus when I saw it that first time, and knew there and then I’d be seeing it a number of times following, I just wish I could’ve removed any and all preconceived notions and suspicions of the film’s very coy director and cast.

However, I can tell that what I’ve just said may dishearten ardent Alien fans. If I saw that, I’d be bummed too. But I’d be thankful I’d been told that by another before going in. So all you Alien fans should take that on board.

Now for the film itself.

Being both a genre film, and a Ridley Scott film, Prometheus carries certain expectations that could stand to work against it in the minds of many. Being a science fiction film, you already run the risk of alienating particular audiences because it immediately demands a suspension of disbelief that some people may not be able to cope with, and there are moments where the science used to build believable fiction is largely stretched or glossed over for the sake of allowing things to happen in the film. There are a couple of moments that made me raise an eyebrow somewhat questioningly, but thankfully the story crafted is moving along at such a pace by that point that you are almost forced to get over it as more things are coming your way pretty fast (and some demand your attention in pretty unforgettable ways).

Science fiction films also tend to be fairly large in scale, particularly tentpole releases like Prometheus, which may already deter some people, and Ridley Scott’s recent filmography tends to lean in the “epic” direction. But  this is really the only way anyone can compare Prometheus to Alien – scope. Prometheus is not a big film, scale wise. It has a fairly small cast, it takes place over a relatively short space of time and is set largely in three places all relatively close to each other. However, tbe ideas Prometheus puts forward are much bigger than the film itself and make you realise that the universe within the film has all the scope it needs. This is something I really loved about it — the story being told is rarely distracted by the scope of its playing field, though I know there are a number of people who point at this as being one the biggest faults in the film.

There are a number of questions put forward, some of which don’t get answered, or answered DIRECTLY in the film. There’s a lot of reading between the lines to be done, so if you’re not up for a film that’s putting the onus on you to think about things intelligently or with an open mind (philosophically speaking) then you’re probably going to hate Prometheus.

Speaking of hating things. I don’t like 3D. I also don’t like IMAX. See Prometheus in both. The 3D is stunning, as are many of the film’s sprawling panoramic shots. The prologue is mindblowingly beautiful in a big screen and the 3D is never used as any kind of gimmick or selling point, it’s just used to create depth, but it’s hands down the most elegant and subtle use of it so far, and having seen both 2D and 3D versions of the film, I can safely say that I will actively try to see it in 3D whenever possible… Yes, this does mean I may be upgrading my television in the very near future. Solely so I can continue to enjoy how beautiful this film is.

Two somewhat problematic things did stand out both times I saw the film though. The score at times seems overly grandiose. Scenes that ideally should’ve had softer sounds or different cues in general had sweeping themes seemingly too similar to the core ones, and though it didn’t necessarily detract from any of the accompanying moments, one can’t help but wonder how much more effective a scene may have been with a more subtle “Jerry Goldsmith” style approach. Actually that reminds me, ALIEN fans will have one other thing to look forward to — NO SPOILER — a reprise of Jerry Goldsmith’s score from the original. I won’t say anything else, because it really is a nice tip of the hat.

My other problem, in contrast to the overuse of music, is the underuse of certain cast members. I really wish Charlize Theron had more to do, because she shines when she’s given the spotlight, and the same goes for Rafe Spall  and Sean Harris. I’m still not entirely sure what to think of Guy Pearce, other than whether his casting in the role he’s given is completely necessary.

The special effects hold up nicely and I suspect will for a long time to come. There’s an interesting mix of CGI and physical/in-camera effects that really help sell the reality of everything in the film. Even the somewhat bizarre design of the “Engineers” is made to work by the way they’ve been brought to life on screen.

At the end of the day, I suspect that, regardless of what I might say here, Prometheus is going to be a fairly divisive film. All I can suggest is that you see it with someone you can tolerate lengthy conversations with, because you’ll want to talk about it once the credits roll (I’ve been dying since the press screening)!

Daniel Craig is back as James Bond 007 in Skyfall, the 23rd adventure in the longest-running film franchise of all time.  In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her.  As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Synopsis

Like most teenagers his age, Peter [played by Andrew Garfield] is trying to figure out who he is and how to be the person he is today. In his journey to put the pieces of his past together he uncovers a secret that his father [Campbell Scott] held… a secret that will ultimately shape his destiny as Spider-Man. This is the first in a series of movies that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story.

The film, which is now in production and is being shot entirely in 3D, will be released on July 3, 2012. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the Marvel Entertainment production for Columbia Pictures. The executive producers are Stan Lee, Kevin Feige, and Michael Grillo.

Welcome Program…. to the grid…. or not. What do you think? Looking cool, or more of the same?

Battleship the movie is the cinematic equivalent of watching a dumb teenager on youtube, stick a firecracker up his arse. There’s drama, tension, action, big explosions and unintentional comedy. But at the end of it all it’s just stupid people doing stupid things for your entertainment. Take from that what you will.

The movie starts with scientists, (inexplicably located in the Himalayas, (maybe they were searching for God with their improbably located radio telescopes)) explaining how their using their new fangled satellite to beam a message to a newly discovered habitable planet Gleise c. It then cuts to them firing their impressive wave motion radio at the satellite which  amplifies the signal off into space.

One of the technicians ominously compares it to the Incans encountering the conquistadors. Though in my opinion any first contact we ever have in the near future would be more like Conquistadors meeting Dodos.

With the premise out of the way, we get down to the tedious task of character development. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is a useless deadbeat who can’t even hold down a conversation let alone a job.  After an amusing attempt to impress the Fleet Admiral’s daughter Samantha (Brooklyn Decker) by stealing a chicken burito from a closed Kwiki Mart, Alex’s brother Stone forces him to join the navy.

We then cut to Alex laying on a beach with Sam discussing how he’s going to ask her Dad for permission to marriage. Dad (Liam Neeson) is busy preparing for the RimPac joint nations naval exercises and making inspiring speeches on old warships. Pay attention to that, the battleship will come back later. Anyway there’s a soccer match where Alex gains a grudge against a Japanese officer. Which causes our designated hero to tick off his future father-in-law and get him thrown out of the navy once the exercises are over.

Fortunately for our hero, and the attention deficient amongst us, a strange object streaks through the starry void. In what must be one of the dumbest invading aliens I’ve ever seen, the alien vessel breaks up into five ships. One of which, promptly smacks into another satellite and crashes inexplicably into Hong Kong. The citizens of New York breath a quiet sigh of relief that the film wasn’t directed by Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich.

Yeehaw boys.

Anyway the other retarded aliens land in the ocean off Hawaii, set down their banjos, and erect a  giant forcefield around the islands, trapping our equally retarded hero with three ships. The aliens destroy the other ships and all of the command staff on his. There’s a revelatory mind rape scene, in case you couldn’t work out from the aliens blowing shit up that they’re really evil.  Then there’s explosions and people yelling “Fire J12, A6, D1. Ahh, you’ve hit my mothership.”

There’s some plot about the aliens taking over the radio telescope in Hawaii to beam a signal home via the satellite. Why everybody in the world didn’t just nuke the satellite instead of hoping the plucky hero would save the day is beyond me.

The special effects are good. Which is what you’d expect from a Michael Bay clone. But I swear to god that all of the aliens look like Fred Durst. I suppose that explains why the aliens are so fucking dumb. We’re being invaded by crackers from another world. I guess that would also explain why all of their equipment is made out of nitro glycerine and detonation cord.

Characterisation is the bog standard cardboard cutouts. There’s the gruff father figure who doesn’t approve of his daughter’s girlfriend. There’s the surrogate father figure/older brother who’s trying to watch out for his younger brother. There’s the useless, jerkass main character who would be locked up in a psychiatric prison if he existed in the real world. Rhianna does a good job of appearing hot and competent, but the rest of the cast must be really great actors because they do so much of it. Liam Neeson varies from bemused contempt to phoning it in. I hope he bought a magnificent house in Tuscany with the money from this. I would if I were him.

Ima gonna make your brain squeal like a pig.

If you like your films big and explodey, and without a coherent plot line then this is your film. If you think Michael Bay should be castrated with a spoon for raping your childhood then you might want to give this movie a wide berth.

And so gentle readers I’d like to ask you a question. Which board game, toy, or other intellectual property would make the worst cinematization?
