HTC acknowledge tweaked multitasking for Sense

HTC's One series phones have beeen pretty much universally praised since their release last month. There's no denying that they represent a true return to form for the company after it's struggles last year. That said, there have been some complaints relating to the way that the One X handles multitasking. Users have complained of the phone being very aggressive when it comes to closing background processes, to the point that instead of multitasking you're really just app switching.

HTC have now acknowledged that along with the launcher, various apps and UI, they've also implemented "custom memory management specifications". Basically Sense multitasking. It would seem that HTC have implemented their specification with the aim of improving general device performance and improving battery life, but there are various for threads on the web full of users complaining of how it makes the phone unusable.

Examples of the issues which arise are web pages having to reload when you leave the broweser, games ending and having to be restarted, and music cutting off after being paused. It does sound like a somewhat frustrating compromise for an otherwise outstanding device.

Have any of you had problems with One X multitasking? We'd love to hear your thoughts on the issue in our Forums. Is it a non-issue or a deal-breaker?
HTC is aware of some questions in the enthusiast community about how the HTC One X handles multitasking and memory management for background apps. We value the community's input and are always looking for ways to enhance customers' experience with our devices. That said, right now multitasking is operating normally according to our custom memory management specifications which balance core ICS features with a consistent HTC Sense experience.

Apple readies iPhone with larger screen (Reuters)

Reality check ... is this true? Apple are readying a 4" display on the next iPhone....

Well Reuters (and WSJ) appear to believe this to be true.....

It is being quoted that production of the screens has already begun at LG, Sharp and Japan Display manufacturers.... we could be in for an exciting few weeks with more rumours before the official announcement.... June the 11th couldn't come fast enough ....

Quoting Reuters:-

"Apple's decision to equip the next iPhone with a larger screen represents part of its competitive response to Samsung Electronics. Samsung unveiled its top-of-the line Galaxy smartphone with a 4.8-inch touch screen and a faster processor earlier this month."

and WSJ reports:-

"Production is set to begin next month for the screens, which measure at least 4 inches diagonally compared with 3.5 inches on the iPhone 4S, the latest phone from Apple, the people said.

The move suggests that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company is trying to make its popular smartphone more appealing amid intensifying competition from rival Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea. Samsung, which became the world's biggest cell phone maker in the first quarter, recently unveiled its new flagship smartphone with a 4.8-inch display, one of the largest smartphone screens."

Just how cheap can they get?

Android Tablets span the entire price range. From amazing pieces of kit like the Asus Transformer Prime or the Asus PadFone, through to mid range devices like the Acer Iconia range or the Archos range. Then you have the under £200 range where you can pickup older devices in firesales lke the HP TouchPad or HTC Flyer. Then you get the under £100 price bracket. This is where I think Google has made a mistake.

This bottom bracket of tablets is a two edged sword.

One side is that cheap tablets are good, they get Android into the hand o f the masses and they then might buy a bigger better more expensive tablet at a later date, or even an Android phone at a later date. My wife is a prime example of this, after using my bargain bin HTC Flyer (which I got over Christmas from Dixons) she has decided that she can probably live with a HTC phone when she next upgrades.

The other side is that cheap tablets are so bad that they make Android as a whole look bad. The user buys a cheap tablet from Ebay or Amazon. The tablet comes from abroad, barely has any memory, it sometimes has the Android Market and sometimes doesn’t. The device will often never get any updates to fix bugs. There will be little or any community support for it. Everything you try and do on the tablet will be met with lag or force closes. Playing games is a chore. You get the picture, I am sure you have all been there. How many people after using a device like this have thought “ooh I think I will go and buy an Acer Iconia now” or was it more like “ooh I guess I could afford an iPad”.

Google by allowing manufacturers to use the basic Android OS for free has opened the doors up to a whole host of dodgy tablets. Which seem to have crossed into mainstream outlets. There are no end of online shops selling these tablets.

The problem does not seem to have spread to phones yet, although some manufacturers’ phones are pretty poor. There is nowhere as big a problem as with tablets.

Is it even a problem? I feel it is, you may feel differently, that’s allowed! Ask yourself what you would do if you accidentally bought a rubbish device.

If you are wondering what got me thinking about this then take a look at this tablet on Amazon.

Ask yourself if you think this can be good. I have never used one, I just think this really sums up these low end devices. All of the reviews are very positive, strangely positive actually. Take a look at some of the reviews.
Received this tablet on the 28/04/12, and playing with it right now. Amazing specifications and its easily handling any heavy duty tasks I'm throwing at it right now.

Perfect for home use and as a portable device cause of the size. Will be using this device for news feeds, games and browsing from now on.

Pros:
- Running on the latest Android ICS 4.0.3 firmware.
- Butter smooth with an excellent Wi-Fi module.
- Mali-400 GPU is capable of running high end 3D games easily.
- Skype works perfectly (with Video Calling)

Cons:
- No GPS or Bluetooth
- Some applications are not compatible (like Google Chrome Browser for Android)
- Developer support for future firmware updates (Android ICS 4.0.4+)
Or the next one
Ok, so im no tech wiz but found this really easy to set up, much easier than my iphone. I have bought it for my daughters birthday (7th) and I cannot wait to give it to her.

Samsung Galaxy SIII – Available a day early

Seen the pictures? Watched the video? Got the money burning a hole in your pocket? If you pre-ordered from the Samsung store in Westfield Stratford City then you can pop down from 6PM on May 29th and pick up your brand new SIII. This is for pre-orders only, so don't go banging on the door to try and get yours until May 30th.

Now, even though this story is a little short, I'm not going to mention the fact that an SIII would be a fantastic birthday present for me (May 26th baby), because that would just be shallow and needy.

Samsung are giving all retailers the chance to have pre-order customers pick up their phone early. If retailers agree, Samsung will let pre-order customers pick up the SIII 7PM on the 29th - an hour after the Samsung store.

SAMSUNG GALAXY SIII AVAILABLE A DAY EARLY FOR SAMSUNG BRAND STORE PRE-ORDER CUSTOMERS

16 th May 2012, London, UK – Samsung Mobile UK today announced that customers who have pre-ordered a Galaxy S III from the Samsung Brand Store at Westfield Stratford City will be able to collect their device the night before the official launch date of 30 May.

Samsung Brand Store pre-order customers can get their hands on the new device from 6pm on 29 May. Early collection will only be available for customers that have pre-ordered from the Samsung Brand Store before 6pm on 29 May. The device will not be available to buy on May 29 – this offer is for pre-order customers only. Pre-orders made after 6pm on 29 May, whether in-store or online, will be fulfilled from 30 May. Pre-orders from retentions or online will also not be delivered to customers’ delivery addresses until 30 May onwards.

Samsung is also giving its retail partners the option to make their own Galaxy S III pre-orders available early; an hour later from 7pm. The final decision will be contingent on individual retailers as to whether they make this offer available to their customers.

Simon Stanford, Vice President, Telecommunications and Networks, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “We’ve had an overwhelming response from our retail partners and customers alike since announcing the Galaxy S III on 3 May. So we wanted to delight our customers and reward them for pre-ordering by letting them get their hands on the device a day before anyone else. We believe we have created our best smartphone yet, designed specifically with daily human needs in mind, and we are proud to provide our customers with a truly unique mobile user experience.”

The Galaxy S III will be available to buy in the UK across all major networks, key high street and out of town electrical retailers, online retailers and the Samsung Brand Store at Westfield Stratford City on 30 May
Samsung Galaxy SIII – Available a day early is original content from Coolsmartphone.com

Multiple Nexus devices coming from several manufacturers?

The WSJ and The Verge are reporting that Google will open up the Nexus program to 5 manufacturers' this Autumn, allowing each to build a Nexus device which Google will then sell directly. This news comes amidst growing concern regarding the possibility of Motorola being given preferential treatment. If Google does go the multiple OEM route that would certainly assuage those complaints.

The knock-on effect for consumers would not only be a bigger choice of "Pure Google" devices but also that each of these OEM's will be given early access to the next version of Android which could, in theory, result in a faster rollout to non-nexus devices.

We'll keep you updated with any developments. In the meantime, we would love to hear from you in our forums on which manufacturers you would like to see build Nexus devices and what features you'd like in this thread complete with poll.

Samsung roll out the Conspirators

Samsung definitely have their foot on the gas at the moment. Not content with launching the sure-to-be-huge Galaxy SIII, they're also making sure that the memory inside Samsung devices delivers the best performance. Now, if we're honest, memory technology can be a little dull. Sure, the Samsung memory delivers better battery life, multitasking and processing speeds, but getting that message across is made easier with their three new characters.

Meet the "The Conspirators" - Battery Brutus, Fiona Freeze and Loading Ball Larry, who looks a bit like Leigh Francis' Mel B creation :) These characters will be popping up on the web to mess with your devices and promote Samsung memory and Samsung devices. The characters represent the issues most of us have with mobile devices - battery life just that bit short, possible crashes and frustration.

Here's Battery Brutus preying on mobile users...

O2 Start DC-HSDPA 42Mbs Rollout

O2 UK have just started rolling out new DC-HSDPA across their network with speeds up to 42Mbs possible.

This is NOT LTE which is 4G but a step in the right direction.

A spokesman for O2 yesterday confirmed to me it has kicked off a rollout of DC-HSPA to "major UK cities". He was unable to specify exactly which cities are getting the upgrade first, but London, Birmingham and Manchester are likely candidates.

"We have begun rolling it out across the UK -- starting with major cities," he said.

Windows Phone On the Rise?

New figures published by Kantar Worldpanel reveal that Windows phone is finally on the rise. Helped by Nokia's new range of Windows Phone handsets they now have a 6% market share in Germany and 4% in the United Kingdom, France, Italy and the US.

Android however stretched their lead in Spain with a massive 72% of the market whilst commandeering 49% in Italy. Android's market share in Germany doubled to 62%.

Despite the growth of Android in mainland Europe, Apple have managed to narrow the gap in the US and the UK, whilst Symbian and Blackberry are still experiencing major drops in market share. RIM now hold a meagre 3% of the US market.

Whilst this is obviously good news for Microsoft and Nokia, there is clearly a very long way to go before they begin to make a dent in Android or Apple's sales or share of the market. There is only so much to be taken from RIM and Symbian and major improvements will be needed in image and quality of product if Nokia and Microsoft are to mount a serious challenge to the two main players in today's smartphone arena.

Is it too late for Microsoft and Nokia, can anyone halt the inexorable rise of Android? Jump over to our forums for a discussion!!

HTC Desire C – Official

The HTC Golf made an early official-ish appearance yesterday, but now HTC have sent us the announcement we were expecting. There was no big launch event but it will be available on every UK network from "early June" and you can choose between red, white or black.

Powered by a 600MHz CPU this perhaps isn't aiming for the power user or demanding customers, but the HTC One range already has three phones to choose from. It's powered by Ice Cream Sandwich, has a 320x480 pixel 3.5" screen, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, FM radio and NFC too.

The Desire C has a 5 megapixel camera, although VGA video recording seems to be the best you'll get. There's microSD expansion and the Dropbox 25GB storage space for the first 2 years.

T-Mobile have already stated that they will offer it for free on a £15.50 contract for 24 months or £169.99 on Pay As You Go.

The nice thing about this is the design of the app. The developers have actually looked at the Windows Phone Metro style and made the app in the same style. It really does look nice, so nice in fact I am tempted to sign up just to use the app.

JuiceDefender – A recommendation

About a week ago Terran Brown mailed me to recommend something called JuiceDefender. It's one of a few apps which claim to extend your battery life so, as I'm usually running low on battery for most of the day, I gave it a try.

First, a little insight into my use. The phone in question is a Samsung Galaxy SII. It's my main phone and unfortunately I don't take much care of it. I didn't really charge it properly from day one and it's hit the floor more times than a Nokia share price. I have it on charge all night, then unplug it at 7AM and hammer the battery to heck for most of the day. Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, you name it, it's on. I've started using Llama to turn off WiFi and GPS when I'm at work but, if I'm honest, it's not made a great deal of difference.

So I approached JuiceDefender without a great deal of confidence and, in my typical lazy fashion, started it up and left it on the default "Balanced" profile. You can adjust this and choose from more aggressive battery-saving profiles if you wish, but heck - I'm lazy. I'm also quite demanding, so when an app says that it's going to control my 3G data consumption I immediately dismiss it and think it'll lead to my tweets and emails arriving hours late. I want data NOW, else the world WILL stop spinning and I'll have a mini personal crisis and start stomping my feet like a five-year-old.

Got it ? Good.

But, after sitting in a dark room and calming down, I decided to give the app a chance. It sits in the information bar at the top of your Android screen and displays a small coloured dot to let you know what's happening. If it's blue then some of your radio / interfaces have been disabled. If it's red then they're all off. If you're a geek like me then you'll love the logging facility which details what's been happening and when.

But it's not just about turning off data connections and re-enabling them every 10 minutes or so (which isn't as bad as you might think actually, I survived!) This will scale your CPU when the phone is idle, it'll adjust your brightness, control your Bluetooth connectivity, change between 2G and 3G and adds location-aware WiFi control, so I could potentially remove Llama completely.

There's full customization too, so you can really dive into the settings and have it match your daily usage needs - then you can save you profile too.

But like I say, I'm lazy. Sometimes I want a big fat button that says, "Make battery last longer", so I had this on default settings running alongside Llama, which disabled my WiFi and GPS at work.

The result? Well, if I'm honest my Galaxy SII was always sounding the infamous "Battery critically low" sound at around 7PM, just 12 hours after unplugging it. Now, with JuiceDefender on, I still have 15-20% battery left when I'm hopping back into bed at 11PM.

This app, I have to say, does what it says. Even for lazy people like me. I wasn't inconvinienced by slow mail or late tweets, it seemed to strike the perfect balance between usage needs and battery saving. Oh, and it's free. Get it, honestly. Get it.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Accessories Pictured! – Update – Now with videos

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy SIII only days away, the hard working people over at Mobilefun.co.uk have released images and video of the new accessories for the class leading handset.

Doubling up as both a holder for the S3 and a battery charger, the Genuine Samsung Galaxy S3 Holder and Battery Charger works as a sleek desk stand that hides your battery away whilst it’s being charger. It docks your S3 at the most convenient angle for typing, swiping and streaming media and even has an LED status indicator light so that you know when the battery is charged. This is perfect for use at home or in the office.

The C-Pen is a gorgeous and stunning stylus which not only helps to reduce the amount of fingerprints on the display of your S3, but also can improve your accuracy when typing messages and just using the handset in general. The rounded end of the stylus makes it extremely easy to use and as it’s made from a soft material won’t damage the display of your S3 in any way. It’s comfortable and looks just like a ballpoint pen.

The Desktop Dock simply docks and charges the Galaxy S3, holding it at the best angle for typing, swiping and streaming media. It can dock the S3 in either portrait or landscape orientation making it great for movies; the volume controls are fully accessible too so you can change the volume whilst watching a movie simply and easily.

The Genuine Samsung Galaxy S3 Flip Cover is both protective and stylish. It replaces the back cover of the S3 and provides full screen protection without any additional bulk: therefore the entire handset remains looking newer for longer. The cover is really well constructed and stops any damage for getting to the S3; it even has all the cut-outs for the important ports and features so that the S3 remains fully functioning whilst in the case.

Like the Chrome Blue Flip Cover, the Ceramic White one replaces the back cover of the S3 in order to provide full screen protection without adding any additional bulk to the handset. The case offers hard wearing and durable protection, whilst allowing access to all the ports and features of the S3 so that it remains fully functioning when in the case.

HTC Desire C appears in rendered form

We previously knew it as the HTC Golf, but now the HTC Desire C has appeared in the Vodafone Portugal catalogue with suitably mid-range specs. There's a 600Mhz CPU (probably the same one we saw in the HTC Explorer), a 3.5" 320x480 pixel screen, 4GB of internal memory and a 5 megapixel camera. Powered by Android Ice Cream Sandwich it has all the usual connectivity, GPS and sensors.
