Android 4.3 “Jelly Bean” has been spotted at the Thailand Mobile Expo.

Over on the XDA Developers forum, user “chaleen” has posted a few pictures of what he/she claims to be a Nexus 4 displayed at the Thailand Mobile Expo 2013. This phone shows to be running a completely new build of Android, JWR45B, using a kernel that was built just weeks ago. The About Phone screen also reads Android 4.3 as the OS version.

Only two pictures were taken of the phone by this particular expo visitor. One is of the camera’s semi-new interface which shoves the controls to the side rather than display them in the focus area, and the other picture is the About Phone screen shot mentioned above.

Another XDA Developers forum user, “innocent36″, also posted two shots. One shows the Jelly Bean Easter Egg that can be triggered from the About section, clearly reading Android 4.3. The other picture is another shot of the About Phone screen, showing a previously unseen baseband string of “m9615a-cefwmazm-2.0.1700.74.” This points to GSM networks.

Based on these four screens, it’s presumed that Android 4.3 won’t see any drasticchanges in the interface – that will likely happen with Android 5.0 “Key Lime Pie”. That said, the new release will likely provide a handful of bug fixes and enhancements as seen with the transition from v4.1 to v4.2.

Droid Life points out that the latest build number is just one of a few that are linked to Android 4.3, following JWR46 and JWR39D. Meanwhile, pasted below is a video taken from the Thailand exhibit showing Android 4.3′s updated camera in action.

Do you like left-field? No, not the band, the standpoint. Well, here’s something that’s going to interest you. The OPPO Find 5, Android, 5″ Full HD smartphone is officially coming to Europe via the all new OPPO Style web store.

I’ve been interested in the OPPO 5 ever since it was announced, but it’s only been available as a pricey US import up until now. Well, bank holiday Monday to be precise. At 11am CEST to be even more precise. That’s because OPPO Style are launching their new European web store, and the Find 5 will be their star product. Take a look at the specs to see why:

Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)

Processor: Qualcomm S4 APQ8064 Quad-Core 1.5GHz

Screen: 5 inch 1080×1920 FULL HD 441 PPI

Memory: 16GB or 32GB ROM, 2GB RAM

Camera: 13MP with 120FPS video capture rate

GPU: Adreno 320

NFC

DLNA

Battery: 2500 mAh built-in lithium-ion

Network unlocked

SIM free

You’ve got to admit that it’s gunning for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z with that screen, and the processor/memory combination should mean it’s pretty swift too.

OPPO Style are quoting a price of 399 Euros including delivery which sounds fairly competitive to me. I’m certainly very interested. How about you?

Go to OPPO Style Europe on Monday if you want to take the plunge.

Read the notification email by clicking below:

Show Press Release (98 More Words)

We here at OPPO Style are very happy to announce our new European web store opening on Monday at 11 am CEST.
We have a lot of new devices waiting there, all excited about finding a new owner to take care of them.
Starting at 399 euros and with free shipping within Europe this is the perfect chance to provide a friendly home for your new OPPO Find 5!
Shipping from Europe also means you no longer have to worry about customs fees!
Hope to see you join us at http://europe.oppostyle.com on Monday!
Love,

Data would be very hit and miss for a wide group of customers last week which stopped them from getting online

As a way of saying sorry, EE have reset every 4G customer’s data use this month back to 0 so you can start using your full allowance once again

A good move from the first 4G company here in the UK and this will at least make a lot of customers happy that something has been done….now… I am off to start using my 20GB again!

These are the five apps that I install every time, I either put a new ROM in my phone ( which is quite a lot ) or have a new device.

1. Pocket Casts

I listen to a lot of podcasts on my phone and watch a lot of video podcasts on my Nexus 7, I wanted a podcast player that could sync between multiple devices and my prayers were answered with Pocket Casts. Searching for pod or videocasts is very easy and if you can’t find what your after you can add the RSS, URL manually. It’s available from the Play Store for £2.70

2. Falcon Pro

Falcon Pro is my Twitter client of choice, I don’t follow a lot of people on Twitter, but the ones I do tend to post a lot of pictures, blog posts, or web page links and I like the way that Falcon Pro shows then in my time line. I know there are other good Twitter Clients which I’ve tried but keep returning to Falcon Pro. Its available from the Play Store at £1.29

3. Tapatalk

If you subscribe to a lot of forums then Tapatalk is the app for you, what the app does is aggregate all your forum posts in to one place for easy of reading and replying etc. The reason I like it is I tend to forget to catch up one some sites and this app just pops them all together, and the remembers where I last read to so I can carry on where I left off.
Its currently available from the Play Store £1:99

4. Slingplayer

Firstly let me make a disclaimer this is a very expensive app and hardware

Right what’s sling player, basically sling player if you haven’t heard of it turns your phone or tablet into your home TV.
This comes in two parts
1. Is the Sling box hardware which is a box that connects to the output of your home system (my sky box) and then to the internet, this clever little box is then able to stream this output across the internet ( using either Wi-Fi or wired connection) to your phone or tablet using the
2. Slingplayer app.

You don’t need to be on the same network as your Slingbox and it’s quite happy streaming to my phone over HSDPA 3g connection.

You can’t beat being on holiday and watching the programs you have recorded on your Sky+

Now hear is the painful part SlingBoxes range in price from £75 to £150 depending on the specs you want. The Sling Player app is £9:99 for each version phone or tablet, but its one of those things that us geeks tend to buy but now I wouldn’t be without mine.

5. Netflix

Netflix is a media streaming service, which for a monthly fee (currently £5:99 per month) allows you stream movies and TV shows to a gazillion different devices.
I know some people will moan saying “its all old stuff” but for me its worth it for Breaking Bad alone, its free to try for a month and you can cancel at anytime so I say give it a try…. The Netflix app is free from the Play Store

Where Samsung go, HTC will follow. In a remarkable change of direction, HTC will be releasing a ‘Google Edition’ of the HTC One. This follows almost immediately after Samsung announcing the Galaxy S4 Google Edition.

Based on the developer incarnation of the HTC One, the Google Edition will be Senseless (sorry, I couldn’t resist that). What I mean, of course, is that it will not be running HTC Sense (the traditional HTC skin that runs on top of stock Android), which many people have been calling for ever since the fantastic HTC Nexus One (which was pretty much an HTC Desire without Sense).

There is now speculation that the One Google Edition could be the catalyst for all the turmoil we are currently seeing in the top echelon of HTC. As Leigh reported yesterday, many of the long standing senior managers have already left, and more seem to be following every day.

There is a belief within HTC that Sense is the ultimate way of interacting with Android, and it could be that the idea of removing Sense has been too much for the (already) struggling management to handle. The decision seems to have been made directly by Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO and co-founder, which may have been against what the wider management believed to be right.

Unfortunately, the phone itself is said to be limited to the US, but let’s hope there will be enough interest to persuade a wider distribution of such handsets. I’m not sure there will be though. When I spoke to a contact at Samsung UK about the S4 Google Edition he said that there was a worry that trying to sell the same phone as the S4 without all the features to the man in the street would be a near impossible pitch to win.

There are more questions to be answered, of course, like whether features will be available as downloadable apps, allowing you to have Zoe without Blinkfeed, for example.

Although I’d love to see a stock HTC One, I wonder if this is the right decision for the company. Let’s hope so.

There’s already a Samsung Galaxy Y, aka the “Young” out there and it’s a couple of years old now. It had Android 2.3 and a 3″ screen. You can get one of those from your local Tesco for about £64.

Now an updated version, complete with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), a faster CPU (now 1GHz) and much more internal storage has arrived. Oh yes, storage. The original Galaxy Y / Young had 160MB of usable space. The new version has 4GB, so there’s enough room to swing several cats and perhaps the odd few dogs too.

The new handset has a 1300mAh battery, bigger screen (3.27″ HVGA) and a 3 megapixel camera at the back (no front camera). GPS, WiFi, microSD and Bluetooth 3.0 is also included.

If you want one, keep an eye on O2 or Carphone Warehouse. You’ll probably be able to pick up this entry-level smartphone relatively cheap.

24 May 2013, London, UK– Following the launch announcement earlier this year, Samsung has today revealed that the Galaxy Young will be available in the UK from this weekend. Ideal for style seekers, the Galaxy Young is available in a range of different colours and boasts a compact and stylish design.

Running on Android™4.1 (Jelly Bean), the Galaxy Young allows mobile tasks to be completed much faster and more efficiently and with the Dropbox app users can access files in any location; for easy editing and sharing. With 4GBinternal storage users can take advantage of the multimedia content capabilities and talk for longer due to a 1GHz processor and 1,300mAh battery capacity.

Simon Stanford, Vice President of IM division, Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland said: “As with all smartphones in our Galaxy range, the Galaxy Young is stylishly designed and packed full of really standout features that make it a great phone to experience and own.”

The Galaxy Young will be available in the UK from a number of networks and online retailers including Carphone Warehouse and O2.

As you’ll know, there’s no microSD expansion on the HTC One. Although there’s more than enough internal storage, news that the Chinese version actually does have a microSD card slot has annoyed some.

So, HTC have been asked why this is. Many assumed it was a difference in dimensions, but HTC state that the radio kit inside the Chinese HTC One is actually smaller, and this creates enough space for a microSD slot. Speaking to TechRadar, HTC stated it was …

Because the Chinese version of the One is designed specifically for the smaller Chinese radio bands, we do have additional space inside the device we were able to use for the microSD slot. That space isn’t available to us in the global version.

Should we stir up the argument about having a removable battery and microSD? Or are you happy with the internal storage already provided?

No microSD on the global HTC One due to radio size is original content from Coolsmartphone.com

You may not have heard of Tizen, but you should take notice, because it could well be coming to a phone near you soon.

Tizen is a new(ish) open source mobile OS. Unlike Firefox and Sailfish this one has big backing, and could threaten the top four operating systems in the next year or two.

Developed by the likes of Samsung, Intel, Vodafone, France Telecom, NEC, DoCoMo, Panasonic, and many smaller companies to be a replacement for Android, Tizen is more than just a misspelt fizzy drink from the 80′s.

The only thing it’s been missing so far is an actual phone! Well, today is the day when all that changes.

The Tizen developers’ conference in San Francisco ends today (24th May), but Samsung and Intel have a couple of treats to round the shindig off: Tizen version 2.1 and a mystery new handset.
It is expected that Samsung will be providing a very high end device to get people interested; something like an S4 equivalent. If true, this could be a very interesting proposition for those looking for something a little bit different.

Would you take a gamble on a high spec phone with a new OS on? It could certainly tempt me.

There have been several solutions to getting a proper game controller to work with mobile devices; most have been pants. The MOGA is the latest player on the block, and it’s now available for pre-order in the UK (with a provisional release date of 14th June).

There are two versions of MOGAs: the Pocket for use with phones, and the Pro for tablet gaming. They are currently only available for Android, but there are plans for iOS and even Windows Phone versions.

On the face of it the MOGA looks like a generic gaming controller with a retracting bracket on it where the Android phone or tablet sits, but actually there’s more to it than that. If you hop over to the Play store you’ll find the Pivot App that lets you pair the controller with your device and download, manage and launch MOGA ‘enhanced’ games.

Yes, the games need to be compatible with the controller, but there are loads that are ready to go, including big names like Grand Theft Auto, N.O.V.A.3, The Dark Knight Rises, and several of the Sonic incarnations.

This video explains more:

MOGA president Eric Bensussen said:

We’re really excited to be launching MOGA in the UK and are confident UK gamers will love it, especially in light of the rave reviews we’ve been receiving over here in the States. We really believe that this system is going to be a game changer in the mobile gaming sector, allowing consumers to play anywhere, anyhow, ultimately revolutionising their experience.

Over a week ago we reported that the HTC Facebook phone – the “First” – had vanished from the “Coming Soon” section of the EE website. We reached out to EE about this and, at the time, they told us that they still intended to range the handset despite it getting ditched by US-network AT&T.

The HTC First included a custom Facebook skin which took over most aspects of the phone, but the UI wasn’t exclusive to the HTC handset for very long at all, and quickly popped up on Google Play for free. The Facebook “Home” app / skin hasn’t exactly broken download records and, following poor sales of the handset itself, AT&T stopped sales.

The fallout for HTC has been pretty bad so far, with top brass abandoning the company amidst rumours of large changes and sharp company politics.

Now we can confirm that UK pre-orders for the HTC First have been cancelled. Meanwhile, customers that registered their interest for the phone on EE will shortly receive an update mail telling them of the news.

An EE spokesperson told us..

Following customer feedback, Facebook has decided to focus on adding new customisation features to Facebook Home over the coming months. While they are working to make a better Facebook Home experience, they have recommended holding off launching the HTC First in the UK, and so we will shortly be contacting those who registered their interest with us to let them know of this decision.

Rest assured, we remain committed to bringing our customers the latest mobile experiences, and we will continue to build on our strong relationship with Facebook so as to offer customers new opportunities in the future.

Held off? Well, if an updated UI is in the works (perhaps one that doesn’t consume the phone quite as much) how long before it returns, if at all?

Confirmed – HTC First UK launch cancelled is original content from Coolsmartphone.com

Remember a few months ago when Microsoft announced the Surface tablets? The Windows RT version and the Windows 8 versions seemed to be the answer to everyone’s problems.

The RT came out and people complained about installing non store based apps, Microsofts answer was “buy the Pro version”, which is going to be a few months time and cost a whole load more money. Well after a good few months it’s available in the UK.

Talking of money the 128GB version will cost £799.99 and the 64GB version £719.99. Plus you’ll need to buy a keyboard cover as well. Which aren’t the cheapest keyboards I’ve ever seen. You can get here on the Microsoft Store.

Spec wise the Surface Pro is pretty good, as long as you don’t compare it to a similarly priced laptop.

CPU Chip: 3rd generation Intel Core i5 Processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000

HTC have apparently sold 5 million Ones, which is quite a lot. Not a lot in comparison to the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the iPhone 5 but it is still good. People are obviously buying the HTC One.

According to WSJ an HTC executive has revealed the figures and that the HTC One is selling

“pretty good so far”

The HTC One started selling in March in parts of Europe and April elsewhere, so the five million is spread over a few months. So this isn’t anywhere near Samsung’s 10 million in a month, but it’s definitely second place in recent times.

Whether or not this news stops anymore executives resigning I don’t know. It seems like something bigger is happening. Although HTC did say over the weekend that they are due to ramp up production of the HTC One, so hopefully sales will continue at a pace. I for one don’t want the Android market to become a one horse race each year and I really want someone to force Samsung to make better quality devices. Let’s just hope HTC can hang in there for a few more years.

Oh and no one mention the HTC First.

Source – wsj - Android Authority

Everything needs to test in the real world and I don’t mean by squirting something into a monkeys face. I mean by flipping a big switch and seeing how many people complain. The airwaves in York are about to get busy.

So who are are at800? They are an organisation responsible for ensuring people continue to receive free-to-air television when 4G mobile services operating at 800 MHz are launched. The organisation is funded by the UK mobile operators with 800 MHz spectrum allocations to provide 4G services – EE, Telefónica UK (O2), Three and Vodafone. So far they have done tests and trials in the West Midlands, south east London, west London and Brighton.

Around 10,000 addresses in an area west of York city centre will receive a postcard later this week explaining that 4G at 800 MHz could cause problems with their Freeview service. Exciting times are ahead for west of York residents, being metaphorical monkeys having stuff squirted in their faces.

Simon Beresford-Wylie, chief executive of at800, said,

“The testing in York will help us further refine our approach, alongside the tests we’ve conducted and which continue in Brighton.4 We urge those viewers in York who receive a postcard, and who see new problems with their Freeview reception, to call us.”

Viewers can call at800 on 0333 31 31 800 but no doubt if you do receive a post card it will advise you what to do.

It is nice to see these things being tested and it is also nice to see 4G slowly rolling out around the country. If only it would work 2 miles outside of Nottingham City Centre.

Show Press Release (349 More Words)

Testing 4G at 800 MHz in York

at800 has announced that it will conduct further testing of 4G at 800 MHz in York. Around 10,000 addresses in an area west of York city centre will receive a postcard later this week explaining that 4G at 800 MHz could cause problems with their Freeview service. Viewers can call at800 on 0333 31 31 800 for more information. at800 is the organisation tasked with ensuring viewers continue to receive TV channels on Freeview when 4G mobile services are launched at 800 MHz.1

The York test will allow at800 to further examine its approach to predicting where interference may occur. These predictions are based on several factors including the strength of television signals and the frequency separation between 4G at 800 MHz and local digital terrestrial television services.2 The test will also help at800 refine the approach it takes for viewers who may need additional support, such as the elderly and those with a disability.3

Potentially affected households are being informed this week, approximately one week before the masts that could affect their Freeview service are activated. In most cases, a free filter, available from at800 – connected between the TV aerial and the television, Freeview box or signal booster – will solve any issues by blocking 4G signals at 800 MHz. at800 will also have a team of professional aerial installers and testing units in the area to respond to calls from viewers.

Simon Beresford-Wylie, chief executive of at800, said, “The testing in York will help us further refine our approach, alongside the tests we’ve conducted and which continue in Brighton.4 We urge those viewers in York who receive a postcard, and who see new problems with their Freeview reception, to call us.”

If viewers have not been contacted directly through the post by at800, problems with their Freeview service are unlikely to be due to 4G at 800 MHz. Television received via a cable or satellite service is not expected to be affected. Only new 4G services at 800 MHz could cause problems with Freeview; existing 4G services from EE operate at 1800 MHz and do not disrupt television reception.

In addition you can download files to your phjone (provided you have Honeycomb or above) and there’s a new spreadsheet editor. We’ve taken some screemnshots of the new version which you can see in the gallery below, but it’s a must-have if you want to access and store files in one safe place. You can also share files with others, manage stuff when you’re out and create or edit documents on the move.

It was only a few days ago that we saw what will be the second high end waterproof phone the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active and now it seems that LG want a slice of the waterproof pie as well.

LG has announced a waterproof smartphone, called the Optimus GJ. The GJ seems to be just a waterproof version of the Optimus G. They share almost identical model numbers as the Optimus G is the E975, while the GJ is the E975W.

Spec wise it is almost identical.

- Dimensions – 136.9 x 68.9 x 9.9 mm
- IPX7 certification means it can stay underwater – up to 1m – for up to 30 minutes
- 4.7 inch IPS HD display (720p)
- Bluetooth 4.0
- 13MP rear camera
- Quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
- 2GB of RAM
- 16GB of internal memory
- MicroSD card slot
- 2,280 mAh battery

Apparently the Optimus GJ will be available in June in Taiwan and whether or not it will ever appear in the UK is another matter.

I’m not sure whether I’d like a waterproof phone or not, I’ve never dropped mine down the loo, I’ve never tried to use it in a river or on a boat. Yes I can see why some people would need/want such a device. I just get the feeling everyone is just going

“we’ve got a waterproof phone as well”

Oh and lastly do you want to see some models in bikinis holding the phones? Ok then here you go.

HTC have just announced a new dual-sim phone for certain markets including Russia and Ukraine running Android and featuring the BlinkFeed we have seen on the recent and popular HTC One

It is a shame we will not be seeing the Desire 600 here in the UK as a dual-sim phone running Android would be a popular choice for anyone running two different sim cards like myself and not have to worry about two phones, but unfortunately for now at least this phone is limited to Russia, Ukraine and MEA.

4.5 inch LCD2 screen

HTC Desire 600 dual sim boosts the acclaimed Desire series

Quad-core processor, true dual SIM convenience and HTC BlinkFeed™ bring premium performance and versatility to the mid-range market

HTC, a global leader in mobile innovation and design, has today unveiled the new HTC Desire 600 dual sim, the first mid-range handset to offer HTC’s latest Sense 5 experience; HTC BlinkFeed and HTC BoomSound, most recently launched as part of the award-winning HTC One. Taking full advantage of Android Jelly Bean, the new model also offers super-fast quad-core performance, while the advanced Video Highlights feature enables maximum creativity at a more affordable price tag.

“People rely on their smartphones every day to be their news channel, email inbox, social network and music player,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The HTC Desire 600 dual sim combines speed and easy multitasking with the truly innovative HTC BlinkFeed home screen. The result is an affordable mid-range phone that sets the standard for its class, keeping the busiest user up-to-date at a glance and offering them the power and range of features to switch between work and play.”

A smartphone designed to keep pace with life

Sporting a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, the HTC Desire 600 dual sim is able to support even the busiest of lifestyles. Capable of high-speed multitasking, super-fast web browsing and graphic-intense gaming, it offers exceptional performance whatever the task.

Dual SIM card holders give you the freedom of having two phones in one, making it easy to switch between multiple mobile accounts and keep you up to speed with all the elements of your world. Running the “dual active” system, the HTC Desire 600 dual sim allows you to have two SIM cards active all the times, enabling you to receive a call on one line, even if you are already using the other.

HTC BlinkFeed: Your favourite content live on your home screen

The HTC Desire 600 dual sim brings HTC’s acclaimed BlinkFeed to the Desire range. Transforming the home screen into a customisable stream of live information, HTC BlinkFeed is displayed on a stunning 4.5”, super LCD2 display and aggregates social streams and news, providing the freshest content at a glance.

Drawing on local and global content from more than 1,400 media sources, BlinkFeed draws on more than 10,000 articles per day from some of the world’s leading media companies including AOL, ESPN, MTV, The Financial Times and Reuters.

Video Highlights: Bringing your moments to life

HTC Video Highlights allows you to turn a day out into an entire experience that you can keep forever. Taking images captured on either the 8MP rear-facing or 1.6 MP front-facing camera, the HTC Desire 600 dual sim automatically creates professional-looking 30-second show reels without the need for advanced editing software. Simply select a music theme, alter the sequences and share your life movie with friends, family and social networks with a single tap of the screen.

HTC BoomSound: Sound you’ll want to share

The dual front-facing speakers of the HTC Desire 600 dual sim allow you to experience mobile entertainment as it is meant to be enjoyed. Complete with exclusive built-in amplifiers, whether you’re listening to music, watching movies or playing games, the speakers, which minimise distortion, offer a sharper, richer, wholly immersive smartphone sound. Beats Audio™ integration also takes the audio quality to the next level guaranteeing an experience as intense and high-powered as the device itself.

EMEA Availability

The new HTC Desire 600 dual sim will be available with mobile operators and major retailers in Russia, Ukraine and MEA from early June 2013. For more information visit www.htc.com.

You may have seen stories about the recent Orange customer who received a rather substantial bill. His Business Sense 1500 plan covered 10 phones and had bills of around £300 per month. Alan and Carolyn Mazkouri, from Swansea, have been with Orange for 15 years.

However, one day Alan found that his mobile had developed a strange fault and got very hot, so Orange replaced it. However, shortly after he had it cut off as the company spotted a large bill on his account.

That bill, as you can see here, was for over £163,000. It took him many months of wrangling to get it sorted out, and despite the bill arriving last September, Orange have only just rectified the issue fully and given Alan a goodwill gesture of £250.

There’s more to this though. How exactly did he get that massive bill?

Well, the phone was faulty. We’re not sure how, but the network registered that it had pulled down 52GB of data. Alan himself isn’t great with phones and rarely sent texts, let alone opened a browser. His data plan was set at 1GB, but here you can see the amount of megabytes he actually used..

Now this has made headlines. The poor guy got a huge bill, but we should just point something out. If he’d have been on the One Plan on Three (with the “All You Can Eat” data) then his bill wouldn’t have ever got in the news.

A couple of years ago we tested the Three offering, and managed to burn through 45.15GB, and our man Dan paid just over £28 for the plan at the time. Check out the bill…

People questioned this and asked us whether it was a marketing stunt, so we did it again, this time on a Three SIM-only One Plan that we bought in a shop. This time we used 44GB and guess how much extra it cost in charges? Absolutely nothing.

52GB of data on Orange in this example, £163,000 bill

44GB-45GB of data on Three in our testing, and we paid less than £30.

So, if you want to avoid excess data charges, you know what to do.

Update - We’ve had a message from “Lord Gordon Gopher” on Twitter who’s shown us his Three AYCE days usage. It’s a massive 100GB!!! No additional charges for him either..
