LG Optimus 3D Max on the way to MWC too

LG have already told us about plenty of new devices this week. They'll grace the LG stand in Barcelona while we run around the event shouting, "Phones! Phones! Phones!"

The 3D Max, which we knew was on the way some time ago, is now confirmed to appear and it's a slimmer but still very powerful device. The 3D technology is still on-board thanks to dual 5 megapixel cameras and there's a powerful 1.2GHz CPU; NFC, WiFi, Bluetooth, 16GB of storage (plus microSD expansion) and a 4.3" screen. Unfortunately it looks as though Android 2.3 will be at its' heart until Ice Cream Sandwich gets delivered via an update.

Smartphone evolution

Smartphones are pretty amazing. We can do a myriad of things with them from the obvious email and internet to something niche that somebody has written an app to do. The amount of technology crammed into these devices is staggering compared to where we were twenty years ago.

My first foray into anything Smartphone was in the late nineties. I had a combination of what I think was a GPRS enabled Ericsson phone and the Psion 5 organiser. I remember at the time feeling pretty much on the bleeding edge of technology although I don't recall actually doing a great deal 'online' back then, was there much of an internet anyway? I had a data only tariff and the phone was hooked up via a cable so along with my normal phone, I now had three devices.

The next milestone was when I became the proud owner of a Sony Ericsson T68i and a Compaq iPAQ. I bought these two devices as a package for the unique ability to surf the internet on the PDA by leveraging the internet on my phone via the Bluetooth connection; no wires! And I'd gone from three to two devices, result!

This was pretty revolutionary at the time and I was the envy of my gadget loving friends, being able to check my email and browse internet pages with ease and all from the convenience of tech in my pocket(s).

I remember thinking that whilst this was all pretty amazing stuff, actually, carrying two devices around was a bit of a pain. I wondered how long it would take for convergence to bring both devices together and my prayers were answered when Sony Ericsson released the P800. It was all there, internet capability integrated into my phone and a camera! I was truly mobile and still connected.

I'm not sure if it was the first such device but it's the first I remember and I loved it enough to rush out and buy one. Naturally I upgraded to the P900 when that was available too.

Over the next years I upgraded constantly to the latest and greatest Smartphone all the while being amazed at what new piece of technology was being crammed into this wonderful pocket sized device.

As these devices became more powerful, I mused at how long it would take for the Smartphone to become my PC: take it everywhere and then dock it to a monitor and keyboard at home / work and carry on where I left off.

Motorola came up with the Webtop and the Atrix device which did just that although my initial view was it was a bit clunky and things like the laptop dock could have been done better i.e. let you at least pick it up and carry around without the phone balanced on the back...

I was pretty excited to see the Ubuntu announcement about running on Android phones. A full Ubuntu desktop running from a docked Android phone? That's pretty awesome in my books! It's being showcased at MWC and the device support will be limited to those with hardware support for HDMI and docking capability. Looking forward to seeing how this develops though.

So what's next? Are we going to see Microsoft do the same perhaps? I wouldn't be surprised. Linux is gaining popularity but I think the majority of people run Windows still. How about the iPhone? There are already rumours of converging iOS and OS X so there's no reason why this concept couldn't be on the roadmap for Apple too.

What would make this idea truly incredible for me would be to do away with the dock altogether and have wireless connectivity to my keyboard, mouse and monitor from my Smartphone. But that might be pushing the technical limitations too far, we'll see.

What other tech can possibly be crammed into a Smartphone? We've got great cameras, GPS, high speed internet, NFC tagging, Bluetooth, Wifi... Batteries of course will need to evolve further to support all this power in our handheld device. I think my money is on micro-projectors being integrated some day, I'll be beaming the lastest Coolsmartphone on to the wall in the office soon I reckon. As long as the phones aren't back to brick size like the good old days...

PowerTrekk – Charge your phone, with water

OK. Two words.

Smartphone. Battery.

Battery life, it must be said, is usually pretty bobbins if you actually use your phone for any length of time. Want to get from A to B? Get the GPS on, use the mapping feature, do a bit of browsing, record some video and .... oh.. the battery is flat.

Sure, there's emergency chargers out there, you can charge from your car, at your desk or at home. But what do you do when you're at the beach or out in a forest? Well, how about charging your phone with some... water?

PowerTrekk is a portable charger that uses water to charge your phone or camera. Prices are a little on the high side - €199 for the device (which is around £166) and then €1.99 (about £1.66) for a "PowerPukk" to convert to water into power. It seems like a high price to pay when you could instead have an emergency charger powered by batteries, but we're going to be paying them a visit at Mobile World Congress to learn more.

Here's a video of it in action. Click on for more pics.

AppSpotr ready to launch – DIY apps for iOS and Android

OK, remember how we pointed at a few websites to help you make an app for free? Here's another one.

http://youtu.be/PXcAgSPKHw8

See, I'm simple at heart. Everyone says it.. "Hey Leigh, you're a bit simple", they say. So here's AppSpotr, a service that'll launch in just a matter of days at Mobile World Congress. They promised us a bottle of water and a burger if we mentioned them now, so we're going to hold them to it. Anyways, here's a preview. It'll let you test and preview your app before squirting it across to the AppStore and Android Market. A live screen will show your native app in realtime so you can see exactly how it'll look before sending it out to the world.

So, AppSpotr, coming February 27th. Burger. Water. Sorted.

GPS Jammer usage revealed

Most of us are now comfortable with GPS being inside our phone and constantly enabled. It can guide you to your destination, track your excercise and tell you how fast you're going. For some, though, GPS is a technology they'd rather not have.

A study by Sentinel found over 60 GPS jamming devices in a 6 month period. The jammers, which tend to be used by drivers with GPS trackers, block out the GPS signals but can affect an area of between 200 and 300 metres. The jammers are easy to buy across the internet and are relatively cheap. Drivers using them can stop their employers knowing where they are but can also interrupt jam signals for nearby sat-navs, phones and other devices which are dependant on the GPS positioning and timing signal.

Professor David Last told the BBC that..

A GPS satellite emits no more power than a car headlight, and with that it has to illuminate half the Earth's surface. A very, very low power jammer that broadcasts on the same radio frequency as the GPS will drown it out.

Most of them are used by people who don't want their vehicles to be tracked.

The Sentinel research project used 20 roadside monitors to check when GPS signals were being jammed.

GPS information is now used in a variety of smartphone apps, with location information sent to Facebook, Twitter, Google and other sites unless settings are altered. This survey appears to have revealed a number of rather unhappy delivery drivers who don't like the idea of their movements getting tracked via GPS.

Ubuntu on Android

In every dual-core phone, there’s a PC trying to get out.... well that's the claim from Ubuntu at least.

It appears they have been busying away with ARM developing their nifty OS to run on Android devices. Don't get all excited about reviving your old tat from the draw, the specifications are quite high -

Dual-core 1GHz CPU

Video acceleration: shared kernel driver with associated X driver; Open GL, ES/EGL

Storage: 2GB for OS disk image

HDMI: video out with secondary frame buffer device

USB host mode

512 MB RAM

As far as desktops go, I really rate Ubuntu as a whole package, now the fact I can have my phone dual boot and carry around no more than the HDMI cable to hook in to any monitor/ telly strikes me as a bit of a no brainer...!

And still be able to make & receive calls.... get-in! Happy days!

"Ubuntu for Android drops in cleanly alongside the rest of Android, so it is easy to integrate into current production roadmaps. The hardware requirements are straightforward and, with a broad range of ARM and x86 hardware supported, it can realistically be added to phones already in development." - Source

Oh look it's the Samsung Galaxy Note. Wait a minute, no, it's the new LG Optimus Vu popping out for another video. Up-close, this is starting to look rather sexy indeed.

The Vu has a 5" screen with a 1024x768 IPS resolution and an 8 megapixel camera. We'll have more on this next week when we broadcast live from Barcelona.

Pure View gets a quick show ahead of MWC

Nokia are teasing us with their new camera technology here, and we fully expect to see more over the coming days.

Smartphone cameras always been fairly "OK" until recently and out looks like Nokia are about to set the bar a little higher.

The video includes lots of snow-based footage with the new camera tech offering "Pure Definition, Pure Detail and Pure Depth".

Android most used OS in UK

The Guardian have posted some great statistics on the number of OS installations across the UK which shows, perhaps unsurprisingly to a lot of us, that Android is now more widespread than iOS in the UK.

Android now has a 36.9% share of the smartphones in the UK according to a survey by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Apple is now in second place, with 28.5% share.

Obviously these figures don't represent the brand of the phone itself, it's likely that Apple is still the most popular brand but that's not surprising with there being many different brands sporting Android.

I know that I jumped to Android from iOS late last year, disappointed that Apple didn't upgrade the iPhone sufficiently for my liking when I was looking for a new handset. I wonder how many others have made a move for similar reasons.

This is the downside of Apple only having a limited number of handsets, there are so many different smartphones to chose from running Android. Now that Apple are rumoured to be putting their iPhone release schedule back to Autumn, I wouldn't be surprised if we see this gap widen further.

Apple may well have to do something awesome with the iPhone 5 to win back their defectors...

Head over to The Guardian for the full story and all the nitty gritty numbers on the other OSes and where they sit in the results
Android most used OS in UK is original content from Coolsmartphone.com

Deezer – App Review

Here's a nice little surprise that's been around a while .... More Online Music than you can shake a stick at too!

Deezer! For those of you familiar with Google Music, Spotify, etc will probably know and love the ability to listen to anything you fancy without the need for digging around your CD collection.

Here are my likes:-

Very simple and intuitive interface - clean and clutter free

Very responsive, no hanging around on the search or scrolling through albums

Multiplatform - Android, iOS, Blackberry, Logitech, Sonos, Samsung & Sony Ericsson platforms too - they've got it covered!

Deezer will become the only truly worldwide music streaming service, being soon available throughout Europe, South America, Western Africa, Northern Africa, Canada, South-East Asia and Australia over the coming weeks

In September 2011 Deezer launched in the UK offering the following stand-alone options to consumers:

Discovery Mode (Free) – The Discovery Mode on PC/Mac and mobile devices allows you to listen to radio channels and smart radio (unlimited listening) and to music on demand in 30-sec clips
Free Trial – If you want to try out the premium services, you can sign up for a 15-day free trial. You'll have the ability to unsubscribe during the 15 days, no commitment, no payment due
Premium - £4.99/month – Unlimited streaming on any PC/Mac in enhanced sound quality, no ads.
Premium+ - £9.99/month – Unlimited streaming, on PC/Mac and all handheld devices online or offline

Expansys have a limited offer on for today only until 5pm on the best selling Acer Liquid Metal, in the rather fetching Mocha colour. They have 200 units available at the great price of £114.99, the cheapest I can find anyway online at the moment.

The Liquid Metal surprised a lot of people and was a really popular handset last year, listed as Expansys' number three best seller.

The handset has a good spec too; 3.6" screen, a 720p video capable 5mp camera and is running Android Gingerbread 2.3.

These offers are proving pretty popular and at this price it's a great way to get a nice Android phone if you're quick enough!

Panasonic Eluga coming to Europe in April

Panasonic have been saying they were planning on entering the phone market again. With Android handsets. Well know they have actually released a load of information and pictures about their upcoming device the Eluga. Strange name, but hey look at it and you soon forget the name. It is going to be a super thin, waterproof, qHD device that really does look amazing. They have said that it will arrive in Europe in April as well. So cross those fingers. At the bottom is a link to the Panasonic site if you want any more info.

Introducing a smartphone that embraces style and resists water: The ELUGA. Enjoy its super-thin frame and big screen with 66% display area ratio. Moreover, experience its ergonomic design, which makes it easy to control everything with one hand. Packed into a super-compact, simple and smooth body.

Ultra slim design with ergonomic shape

Panasonic takes slim to a higher level. With its curved edges, the ELUGA has a new smartphone format, which will fit your hand nicely and your pocket seamlessly. Its intelligent handling makes it easy to control everything with just one hand. Smart has never been so slim! Available in classic black and silver.

Panasonic ultra light

With a weight of 103 g, the Panasonic ELUGA is ultralight, making it the perfect accessory everywhere you go.

Absolutely stunning picture quality

With the Panasonic ELUGA, you can view your world in quarter high definition (qHD). Its 4.3" (10.9 cm) capacitive OLED qHD screen – with a slender 123 × 62 × 7.8 mm frame – offers a resolution of 960 × 540 px and the largest display area ratio currently on the market. This makes the pixel density so high that you’ll be unable to pick out an individual pixel. The ELUGA offers truly vivid colours, enhanced readability and outstanding sharpness as standard.

Full-scale screen with super-thin Frame

Compared to other phones with the same display size, the ELUGA has virtually no frame but an even better resolution. With a display area ratio of 66%, it offers the largest display area ratio currently on the market.

Outdoor ability with urban style

Smartphones are cutting-edge technology – but once a phone is dunked underwater, it’s destroyed. Wouldn’t it be nice not to worry about your mobile device, should it take a tumble into the sink? With Panasonic’s ELUGA, you no longer need to fear water or dust. Its waterproof technology makes it ready for outdoor activities but it also retains a metropolitan design.

Approved with an IP57 certificate

The IP Code is an international standard to mark protection categories. IP57 means that the ELUGA is waterproof and dustproof. It was tested by being immersed into water at a depth of up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes – without taking any damage. More than enough to protect you against accidental splashes.

Panasonic's NFC Applications

The Panasonic ELUGA with NFC applications makes your life easier. Share contacts, links, pictures, directions or apps with other NFC-enabled Android phones. Start your workflow with just one touch of your IC tag card. The open standard NFC makes the ELUGA future-ready - enabling you to take advantage of contactless infrastructure in public transportation and mobile money and ticketing applications

NFC Chipset

The Panasonic ELUGA integrates the latest technology. NFC will change your world - unlock your phone, start applications, change your style or profile in seconds with Panasonic NFC tags* or cards.

Smart has never been so efficient

ELUGA’s Eco Mode helps you to save energy and to achieve a longer battery life. If the power of your battery falls below a defined amount, ELUGA automatically turns off certain functions and setting changes. In this way, the phone uses less battery power.

For example, the function reduces the display’s timeout, terminates background applications that aren’t being used and limits the processor’s consumption because the usage is limited on normal apps. Get the most out of your phone – in every situation.

ZTE to Show New Mimosa X Handset Featuring ? Tegra Dual-Core Processor and NVIDIA Icera Modem at MWC 2012

Yesterday ZTE announced two new devices, details here. The PF200 and the N910, well today they have announced the Mimosa X. Don’t you just love a good naming convention?

The Mimosa X is a qHD device with an NVIDIA Tegra2 dual core chip, running Ice Cream Sandwich. It has a 5 megapixel camera and another 0.3 megapixel shooter up front. This seems to be a mid range device, as the PF200 from yesterday had a 8 megapixel camera. It’s all getting a little confusing and the strange names are not helping. :)

Either way they do look nice, although they do seem to have a different launcher running on them. This may delay updates in the future.

Yesterday's photos did look like mockups, but today we appear to have a real picture does actually look real. We will be at MWC soon so whatever they announce we will be there to cover it.

Here is the press release from ZTE.

February 21, 2012, Shenzhen, China – ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, is set to launch a new Android handset, the ZTE Mimosa X, running the NVIDIA® Tegra® 2 mobile processor and the NVIDIA Icera 450 HSPA+ modem, at the global telecoms industry event Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The ZTE Mimosa X will run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and have a high quality QHD (960 x 540 pixel) capacitive TFT touchscreen. It will also come equipped with a 5 MP autofocus and flash camera, with a 0.3 MP front facing camera for video-calling.

The Mimosa X will also have a wide range of user-friendly capabilities built in, including GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, an accelerator for screen orientation management and firmware over the air (FOTA) updating, and a proximity sensor.

The ZTE Mimosa X handset, powered by the Tegra 2 processor, will be targeted at smart phone users who take their handset audio and video capabilities seriously. Features of the handset will include advanced audio distribution profile (A2DP), Dolby sound, digital living network alliance (DLNA) compatibility for easy sharing of content, HD video record and play, dual microphones, and built-in gyroscope. It also includes an Icera baseband processor, making it the first phone to incorporate this cutting-edge technology that was acquired last year by NVIDIA.

“The Tegra processor and Icera modem will play an important part in the development of the mobile handset market, and ZTE has worked closely with NVIDIA to develop the Mimosa X smart phone in time for launch at this major global telecoms industry event,” said Mr. He Shiyou,Executive Vice President and Head of the Terminal Division of ZTE. “We expect that the Tegra processor will have a big impact on the mainstream mobile communications world in the coming months and years.”

“The ZTE Mimosa X sets a milestone for the mobile computing industry,” said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. “This is the first time that both NVIDIA Tegra and Icera processors are powering a smartphone. The Mimosa X brings the outstanding performance and long battery life that Tegra has quickly become known for, into the mainstream smartphone market.”

The Mimosa X will be launched around Q2 2012.

iPhone could be moving to yearly autumn release schedule

With last autumn's announcement of the iPhone 4S, Apple moved away from their traditional early summer launch, which had been in place since the original iPhone was released in 2007. Since then, there has been much speculation that the iPhone 5 will be announced this summer, returning to that cycle. Japanese Apple site Macotakara - who have a good track record with Apple rumours - have other ideas.

Citing "a reliable Asian source", Macotakara report that the next iPhone will be released in September or October of this year, and that "this cycle seems to continue for a while". That would make sense - I've always had a feeling that a new release this summer wouldn't give a big enough gap between models, and an autumn release ties in nicely with the lucrative Christmas market.

We'll keep an eye out for any further news and rumours - one thing that is certain is there'll be plenty more of that in the coming months
iPhone could be moving to yearly autumn release schedule is original content from Coolsmartphone.com

LG’S NEW DESIGN STRATEGY FOR

MOBILE DEVICES TO BE REVEALED AT 2012 MWC

LG Takes Design Philosophy to the Next Level with Line-up of Stylish Smartphones

Slough, Berkshire, Feb. 21, 2012 – LG Electronics (LG) makes its boldest move yet in its strategy to attain smartphone leadership with the launch of its new design identity, L-Style, at the 2012 Mobile World Congress (MWC).

The core essence of L-Style involves a timeless design with finer details that further differentiate LG’s mobile devices from the competition. LG’s design leadership has been well established in the past with a successful track-record that includes the Black Label Series phones such as the Chocolate and Shine.

“Design is consistently the top or second most important factor for customers when choosing a mobile phone,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “With smartphones, we sometimes took a more functional approach to design but with L-Style we’re going back to our roots as a company focused on how our products fit into the lifestyle of our customers.”

L-Style’s design philosophy is comprised of five aesthetic elements: Modern Square Style for a comfortable grip, Floating Mass Technology for a slimmer look, Seamless Layout for a more intuitive arrangement of keys, Harmonized Design Contrast utilizing metallic accents and Sensuous Slim Shape that naturally draws one’s attention.

Three new smartphones to be unveiled at MWC will initially feature the L-Style look. The Optimus L3, with a 3.2-inch display, will first launch in Europe this March. This smartphone will be followed by two other devices in the first half of the year running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich: Optimus L5 with a 4.0-inch display and Optimus L7 featuring a 4.3-inch screen.

Market availability and additional hardware specifications of all three models will be announced at a future date
LG L-Style handsets get announced is original content from Coolsmartphone.com

Just what is Mobile World Congress?

I know, for the tech-hungry phone lovers out there this might seem like a weird question. In just a matter of days you WILL see an explosion of Twitter hash-tags (#mwc #mobileworldcongress) and more news items per hour than at any other time of year. Put simply, Mobile World Congress is THE trade show for anything "mobile".

Each year the world looks to Barcelona as the big mobile manufacturers show off their new handsets and try to gain an edge on their competitors. Sony, HTC, Motorola, Huawei, ZTE, Samsung, LG and others will have their newly announced phones on display, Google and Microsoft will be pushing their mobile OS's and hundreds more will be showing their apps, services, solutions and accessories.

This year we're already getting a feel of the event - mobile payments and handling "the bandwidth problem" seem to be high on the agenda.

There'll be hundreds of reporters at the event and, yet again, we'll have a team arriving in the city to give you the best coverage possible. We'll be using all the latest technology to deliver instant pictures, hands-on videos and updates live from the event.

If you want to know what handsets will be hitting the market during 2012, tune in. If you want to know what online portals, mobile solutions, apps, solutions, accessories and innovations are coming - stay right here
Just what is Mobile World Congress? is original content from Coolsmartphone.com

Sony Xperia U pictures appear online

Everyday at the moment we hear about another manufacturer releasing some shots of an upcoming device. Well today is no different, Sony are expected to announce a couple of new devices at MWC. One of them being the Sony Xperia U also known as the Kumquat or ST25i. Either way it looks like a mini version of the soon to be released Xperia S. In fact it is a 3.5" screen compared to the Xperia S which has a 4.3" screen.
