What customer says about Western Digital My Book Essential 3 TB:

"VERY NICE !!!" By buffalo ()

I bought two of these 2TB drives to store some important stuff I have. I have a USB 3.0 capable motherboard so I wanted to take advantage of the increased speeds these drives can offer over the standard 2.0 drives. I think I fell victim to some marketing slight of hand when USB 3.0 was first introduced. Ultra blazing fast speeds were promised but what I did not realize is that although the drive itself is fast, your speeds are really determined on what kind of drive your writing from or to. This is what I did not educate myself about properly. I have a internal 2 TB 7200RPM standard drive and these externals and my transfer speeds are very very nice when compared to USB 2.0... no doubt about it. I think the transfer and copy speeds would reach the potential of this technology if you were using one of these and a SSD drive. Then I think you would see some crazy speeds. Overall I am super pleased with the speeds I get which average around 80 megabytes up to around 120 megabytes.
See original review here

"USB 3.0 speed is great" By S. Davey ()

I bought this because of the USB 3.0 speed, to back up my music workstation. I have about 1.5 TB of active data, and I need to back this up in much less time than would be possible with USB 2.0. I'm using a new computer that comes with USB 3.0 ports, and it works great. Very speedy.

Some reviewers have commented on the proprietary software. You don't have to use this, and I don't. I just plug it in without doing any software installation, and it appears in Windows as an ordinary hard drive.
See original review here
What customer says about Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB:

"Excellent External Drive" By OlyNomad ()

I am very satisfied with this external drive. Within 10 minutes of opening the package I was transferring pictures onto it. I have Windows 7. I opened the package up, undid the cord, plugged it into the computer and it took about 5 minutes to locate and install drivers and then I was good to go. I transferred over 300 pictures right away, lightning fast and it didn't even make a dent on the space available. It has 5-star performance, but a bonus is that it looks 5-star too. Very compact and stylish. It has a user manual installed with it that has more languages than I've seen on any other product, so if English isn't your first language you are set with instructions. The product includes 30 days of free telephone support during the warranty period that starts with the first call you make to tech support. Email support is free through the entire warranty period. I have not had to use tech support so it hasn't applied, but that is good to know.
See original review here
"Exactly as expected" By D ()

Good size, good weight, good price, easy to use.

Some of the most computer savy users might be mildly annoyed that the backup software that comes pre-loaded isn't removable, but it's a tiny fraction of a 1tb drive, and if you want to use it it's pretty decent software.

The drive is fairly fast, even on a USB2.
See original review here

What customer says about Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB:

"Excellent External Drive" By Mark ()

The Western Digital WD Elements is probably most notable for what it doesn't have:

It doesn't have any clever "look at me" flasing/glowing/blinking lights. One tiny light in the back will confirm it is on. But you won't need to check because "it just works".

It doesn't have any annoying, auto-loading, "I know better" software. There are lots of great backup programs available (freeware, shareware and built into most operating systems). And, of course, you can always just drag-and-drop files right onto the drive.

It doesn't get hot. Heat is a killer for electronics so that is even more important than you might think.

It doesn't make ANY sound.

It doesn't take up much space. It is smaller and more compact than any other external drive that I have purchased.

It doesn't have any goofy stands or attachments. It is squared on all sides except the back so you can position it any way you want to.

And finally, it doesn't cost much. Considering drive space for cost this is the best value I have ever gotten on a drive.

For reference I have purchased two Seagate Freeagent drives, a 1 TB MyBook and have put several old drives into external drive enclosures. All of them are still working. I also have passing experience with several others from work and associates -- I like the WD Elements solution the best!

See original review here
