It's the promise of God

You know, it sent shivers down to my spine.

It was overwhelming. Utter enlivening.

At Inti, we have this "Christians Fellowship" conducted by our own Christian friends every Wednesday. It's the time when non-Christians or Christians gather together and have fun basically. We play icebreakers, share thoughts, get to know each other more, stuff like that. Any Inti-ans are welcome to join us :)

Every Wednesday 12pm-1pm.

Normally we'll do it at 5th floor, so contact me if you're interested to know which room we'll be conducting as it varies weekly.

And gosh, isn't his message inspiring?

The way he delivers his talk is full of enthusiasm & humor and it definitely touched everyone's heart.

My last minute essay

Hello people.
Prior from my last post, I mentioned about my LAN subjects Finals.

Malaysian Studies went well surprisingly. I wrote a lot, not entirely crapping though :) Moral Studies however, was a total contrast, it was quite tough for me, as I did not study much. To make matter worse, mum have to fetch me early, so I had to rush things. Finished my last essay within 10 minutes -.- blah. Hope I pass.

Anyways, decipher the blog title, gonna put up my featured ESL essay here. So to those future HSC's students who somehow arrive to this particular post through urm googling . . . untung lah hor? :P
Enough of the braggy stuff, and now the essay:

How do composers of texts you have studied convey the scene of belonging of characters? Refer your 2 prescribed texts and 2 texts of your own choosing.

The theme of belonging is a profound pillar behind most of literature works today. Composers tend to implement the sense belonging as a cornerstone for their works so readers can easily relate to it. What is the sense of belonging? A sense of belonging is something we all endeavor to seek in life. It is a need we pose as social beings to have companionship in our daily lives. Some scientists even argue that to belong is a basic human need. Bonds are everywhere, the bond between friends, the alliance between family members or even the attachment between pets. All these associations are where mankind finds true meaning to life and thus, have a right reason to live and something to fight for. The two prescribed texts I have analyzed are Educating Rita by Willy Russell and Heat and Dust by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. The two chosen texts would be the multi award winning blockbuster movie, Titanic directed by James Cameroon and the novel The Sister Keeper by Jodi Picoult. These texts depict a solid sense of belonging in their characters and each has their own unique way of journey in quest of true belonging in life.

The primary sense of belonging in these texts would be of alienation at the beginning but eventually crawl back to true belonging at the climate of the texts. In the text Educating Rita, the main character Rita who hails from the working class strives to find a “better way of living” in seeking an education to find certain “deepness” her life, thus having an aspiration to talk “things that matter”. In the pursuit of it, Rita is ostracized by her own working class society as she is labeled as a “whimp”. They do not value higher education and are resistant to change as shown when they cannot understand why she wants to “rock the coffin”. Consequently, she is alienated by her all kind and become a “freak” and “half caste”. She moves on her life by seeking education which fills her “with life itself” and giving her the variety of “choice” in life and eventually found true belonging. Similarly, the theme alienation is also spotted in the text Heat and Dust where Olivia, an Englishwoman arrives in India just to find herself marooned in a whole new culture and world. Like Rita, she feel “extremely bored” with her life in India, and does not enjoy the company of her class of British officials in India who are “so dull and boring” and always thought that “they knew best”. The bond between Olivia and her husband, Douglas, gradually diminish with his increasing workload and she felt alienated by her own husband when all the “endless conversation” between Douglas and the Nawab “did not include her”. Through this solitary desperation, Olivia soon began to seek an affiliation with the Nawab who she “noticed and realized that here at last was one person in India who was interested in her”. Likewise, this alienation is also portrayed in the movie Titanic as Rose, the main female character in the movie who is engaged with Carl doesn’t feel belong to her own fiancé albeit the public decoration of engagement should impersonate otherwise. She expressed intelligibly that she is not one of Carl’s “foreman” which he can “command”. Rose resembling Olivia, found a better sense of belonging in Jack, a guy she met in Titanic just like Olivia and the Nawab. The bond between Rose and Jack is so unsounded which one willing to sacrifice oneself to be with the other, as quoted “you jump, I jump” by both Rose and Jack in different situation. However, alienation in the text The Sister’s Keeper is a tad bit different from the rest. Anna who is the sister of a leukemia patient, Kate appeared to feel alienated by her parents as they conceived her just because they needed a donor of umbilical chord to keep her sister alive. The situation worsened when she seek help of an attorney to litigate a case of medical emancipation as quoted “I want to sue them for the right of my own body”. This shows no signs of belonging toward her parents as she’s willing to reach this extent which can tear her family apart. It is revealed at the end of the text that she did those unmerciful actions are all at the request of her sick sister who hates to stay in the hospital anymore and is prepare to end all her suffering by giving up her life. This shows the true bond between Anna and her sister, as she’s willing to sacrifice to fulfill her sister’s wish.

Another sense of belonging shown is the social differences of the characters live in. In Educating Rita, Rita lives in a society carved up by the educated class and the working class. One distinct quality between the two classes are the exercise of language. Rita who represents the working class is witty and bad-mannered with her thick colloquial accents and slangs of profanity, whereas Frank, her teacher is part of the educated class portrayed with their high standard of English in the text. Any person who equates in features like in Rita will be blackballed by the educated society. Therefore, the working class is considered as a lower class as they do not have an advanced education. This lineament could also be seen in Titanic as Jack who hails from the lower class is constantly discriminate by Carl who labeled Jack as a “gutter rat”. Albeit Rose is from the upper class, quotes from herself “I saw my whole life as if I had already lived it. An endless parade of parties and cotillions, yachts and polo matches. Always the same narrow people, the same mindless chatter. I felt like I was standing at a great precipice, with no one to pull me back, no one who cared... or even noticed.” proves that any class has their own up and down. She further solidified her hatred for her own class by disliking her class of “looking down” on the lower classes and thinks they are “giant” but instead they are merely “dust” in the eyes of God. Class distinction is also represented in Heat and Dust. The character of the Narrator is involved with both the lower and upper class. However, she is like Rose in Titanic who seeks a belonging with the lower classes. What we assumed that the educated world is “a better way of living” and lead perfect lives, which is like the Indians in Heat and Dust who view the western world as “a place that has everything” whereas India has “nothing”. All these assumptions proved otherwise as the texts progress, like in Educating Rita, Rita realizes the middle class do not “sing a better song, only a different song” and in her hunger for an education and a better life, she ended up with “a load of quotes an’ empty phrases”. Frank from Educating Rita seconds the awry assumption by quoting “everything I know… is that I know absolutely nothing”. These class inequalities is clearly portrayed by the characters of each texts as they belong to a certain class but as time passes, they learnt that their own classes are not much different to other classes and in quest for a belonging they feel right, they began to alienate their own class and bit by bit finding a position in another class.

The final sense of belonging which the composers inserted in their respective texts is the personalized bonds between characters. These bonds are the major stepping stone in helping the characters to gain true belonging they feel right in life. As seen in the text Educating Rita, the prime character, Rita, constitute a bond with Frank, her teacher who plays a big part in helping her gaining the right education and ultimately gives her “choice in life”. At first, Rita obsession to be educated has lead her in the verge of losing her natural wit, bubbly, cheerful demeanour, forces Frank to stop her from changing to a “Dalek”. This causes a rift in their relationship and Rita sees him as her obstacle to achieve her dreams. True bonding will at long last prevail as in her wake of maturity, she realizes Frank is “a good teacher” and Frank is the only one who really appreciates who she really is. In return, Rita gives Frank a new meaning to live as Rita is the “first breath of fresh air”. In Titanic, the unconditional love between Jack and Rose is the largely the theme of the whole movie. Jack is willing to sacrifice himself to save Rose and he wants Rose to die old instead of dying with him despite their mutual promise of being together live or dead. Besides, Rose is willing to sacrifice her relationship with her family and also the upper class to be with Jack. All these show two individuals who are willing to carry out the ultimate sacrifices for love nor bond between them as they feel the most belong to each other. Likewise, in The Sister’s Keeper, the bond between Anna and Kate is as genuine as Jack and Rose. Every time Kate, the sick sister was in the hospital, Anna will be by her side as she is her allogeneic donor as quoted “When Kate needs leukocytes or stem cells or bone marrow to fool her body into thinking it's healthy, I'm the one who provides them. Nearly every time Kate's hospitalized, I wind up there too." In Heat and Dust however, the intimate bond is not so constructive as Olivia who is isolated in the whole new world of India, pursues an attachment with the Nawab to escape loneliness. We can conclude the bond between Olivia and the Nawab is not as genuine as the bond Jack and Rose posses. Albeit, the Nawab is a bad influence and “the worst kind of Indian”, Olivia is ignorant to the matter as she is desperately to get out of her “extremely bored” life and hold on to the affiliation. This bond as expected, doesn’t last long as the Nawab was just using her to make the British “look silly” and because of this, she has lose out the one that truly loves her in which was Douglas, her husband.

To sum everything up, the composers of the four texts channels the theme of belonging in ostensibly fashion. However in its core structures, the concept of belonging is very similar in terms of alienation, class differentiation and personal bonds. We watched how each character grows from being unsatisfied to their own social class and experiencing roadblocks in lives to their quest to find a rightful place to feel belong. The bonds between characters is the focal point of bringing everything in mend, and help each character to learn and develop in life, changing them and making them a better person.

I thought this essay is crappy though, as you know lah, last minute work. I just wanna avoid the 2000 words essay punishment for not handing in but to my amaze it's good enough to be featured :) :)

Blurring vision indulging my life now horrayyyy.

And my effin trials is like 9 days away? double horrrayyyyy!

Well, they went to shop while I was basically with wifey at Sunway the whole 3 days trip :)

The defence of Michael Jackson

Typical myths and lies of the King of Pop,

Why is he white? Please don’t ever be one of the ignorant people who accuses Michael of 'bleaching' his skin. First of all, that isn’t even medically possible. The truth is, he has a skin disease named Vitiligo. This disease causes white patches all over a person’s skin. At first, he had only a few patches that were covered up by dark makeup. But as the disease spread and got worse, he had 90% of his skin covered in white patches. So instead, white makeup was used to cover up the dark and even out his skin tone, since it was covered with the patches. Vitiligo also makes skin sensitive to the sun, which explains why he goes out in public with an umbrella in his hand. Another note, he also suffered drastic burns to his skin when the effects for a Pepsi Commercial went wrong where his hair was on fire accidentally.

What about the plastic surgery? What about it? Do you know any celebrities who don’t have any work done, whether minor or extreme. There is nothing wrong with that. Let me ask you this: why should this even matter? It has nothing to do with innocence, guilt, kindness, or personality. It’s his face, and his personal decision. Barbara Walters and Paula Abdul look a little different each time we see them, but no one cares about that. They don’t sensationalize other celebrities or focus on their changes, but suddenly Michael’s plastic surgery is such a big deal. This is something that is a personal choice and has nothing to do with a person’s character. Instead of pointing fingers, we should be a society who isn’t afraid to ACCEPT each other’s differences. It’s time to embrace being different. And it’s really no one’s business. And for the record, he DID break his nose during a show rehearsal which led to the first surgery.

What’s up with Neverland? You must keep in mind, this is a man who never really had a childhood. Breaking into fame from a young age thanks to the Jackson 5 group, he was constantly pressured and pushed to work hard by his father. He was expected to work non-stop and never be a kid. Now, as an adult, if he enjoys creating a theme park in his home and relishing in the childhood he never had, why not? What harm does that do? This is his passion, his joy, his pleasure. Who are we to judge that? Hey, if I had the amounts of money he does, I wouldn’t want to grow up either. This is his passion. Popular rappers like Eminem can have their guns and drugs, and that isn’t a problem. But Michael’s petting zoo and Ferris wheel pose such a big threat? That sure sounds logical to me. He earned his money the hard way, and if he chooses to spend it on Neverland, he should be free and we have no right to judge that. It is another way of bringing joy to the lives of children, as he frequently allows cancer-stricken and needy children to visit the park.

Reckless spending habits? Once again, what business is this of ours? If J.LO can spend her money on a diamond toilet seat, do we really have the right to question Michael’s love for art and spending habits? He worked hard throughout his entire life to earn every penny he has, and it’s his sweat, blood, and tears that gained him the fortune he enjoys today. No one tells us how to spend our money. No one can tell him how to spend his.

And for the child molestation case, no one can really prove did it somehow happened or not. The judge DID plead him not guilty though.The real truth is something that the media covers up because the 'media' is nothing more than a group of money-hungry rating-seekers who know that negative news SELLS! I truly believe that he has become an easy target because of his kindness and giving attitude. Michael is a good-natured man who has fallen victim to a vicious media. The same media that put him on a pedestal in the 80’s is attempting to bring him down, and won’t be satisfied till they break him. But the truth is, they can’t and they won‘t. We have a sick fascination with watching the mighty fall, but Michael is an exception. He truly is an innocent man, and a true survivor, providing great inspiration to all his loyal fans around the world. Don’t let the media taint his name and crucify an innocent man. We must take a stand. Next time you are in a room, and Michael’s name comes up, stand up tall, and defend him. Point out the 'other side' of the story and open people’s eyes to the truth.

The enticing smell of the commixture between Caramel and Starbuck's notable coffee brushes into the nostrils, that fixed mixture of coffee and caramel, with that certain intensity of chocolate chips, all blend with an addictive scent. This diorama pumps into the bloodstream that urge of freshness that only can be induced by some kind of cocaine compounds of a type of aphrodisiac placebo otherwise. . .

She with her Caramel blended frap without cream and me with my Caramel chocolate chips blended frap with cream. Together, we sat at a little corner, consistent imbibes of our holy water of the day, basking the much needed cool down from the blistering weather outside and most importantly spending adequate moments together. Cheeky conversations and my crappy Twinhead laptop accompany us along the time. We did a little plurking, a tad bit of facebooking and urm googling. Typical 21st century teenagers practices. Sitting at that hair breadth distance next to complacency was utterly satisfying especially to the ones you love. Whenever we are in pair, how I wish I'm Hiro Nakamura in Heroes who possess an ability of space-time manipulation, enable me to segregate time and stops time around us but our time. We could have the whole world to our own. ahhhhhh~

So apparently, I've been dead for far toooooo long! No proper posts on my blog except extempore birthday wishes posts. I have no idea why I even bother typing this right now, probably after reading Mr Zheng Xue's tag in the cbox all the way from the UK ;) seeeeee, I so nice, I update for you, and yeah for YOUR sake not God's sake.

So let's see, get somenthing bout Benjamin huh? he arrrrrrr, went to KL for smt smt :P which he doesn't want people to know. HAHA. zipped mouth

Life has been hectic, assignments after assignments, second assessment is like 10+ days away? I seriously neeed more time! I had been busiying myself with activities, most of them are for the Inti Musical Play. I'm one of the cast ;] I'm starring as MOJO the rocker! Some of you may took aback by ths, AARONTENG's gonna act?! seriously?! nooo way! hahaha typical reaction. But hey, its yesssss way! I only got one line for god's sake, mostly playing music. Just for this, I learn the bass from scratch, thankgod my guitar knowledge helps loads. No one knows how to play bass so I have to learn it. sheeesh.

You guys gotta come for the Musical Play. I'll be posting details about that in the next post so STAY TUNE.

Sooooo, whoever has been following me at Plurk (which I am active almost every day, unlike this pathetic blog), should had already informed the news I have started college last Tuesday. KL plan ditched because of some reasons! *wink* and decided to choose HSC at Inti International College Penang instead. Never knew HSC has a March intake but the girl at the Education fair said otherwise, and even asked me to start immediately the next day, rush much.HAHA. Missed two months of workloads, gotta start buckling up every single day after rotting for so loooong. aiks

College life was a blast. I guess :) Loads of Chung Ling Kia(s), so it's almost like high school all over again with the addition of the opposite sex of course. I'm taking Maths, ESL, Biology, Chemistry and Business Studies. No Physics though. Chemistry is fun, lecturer is top draw, make everything seems so simple. Maths is fine too, watching performances during classes are entertaining too. HAHAHA. ESL is basically English la, with the twist of art appreciation, no idea what it's talking bout, seriously! Biology is decent too, the lecturer's notes remind me of my legendary high school biology notes, niceee! And finally Business Studies, topics seem interesting which touch on everyday business, adverts, products and stuff but i have a knack of yawning during class :p

Inti is decent la, food is kinda expensive though! The two Ping Pong tables are crowded 24/7 with people like Shih Yik, who once played till 12am !!! No kidding! Chiayi's class is just right beside the tables, i wonder the screaming and noisiness will interrupted her lesson at times or not? lmao.

4 days into my college life, met loads of new friends, homework so far are still manageable. Thanks to Benjamin and Evonne for guiding me around, really appreciate it =]

6 days into 2009 is uninspiring.

It's like counting down days. Days which are full of profound cogitating, decisions making.. CRUCIAL decisions to be exact. Heck after those thoughtfulness and prognostications, I finally made my call, at least the path I'll be heading is now laid distinctly in my psyche, well sorta.

Hmm...

Regained consciousness. Reminiscing those memorable moments in 2008. It was the year I sat for my SPM which indirectly led me to countless visits to Starbucks for studying manner, more visits I ever had in previous years adding up.. burnt a hell of a hole in my pocket! It was also the year I graduated from high school... mixed feeling this one =S Met a great deal of new friends too, mainly setting out from the day I joined Plurk :) And oh, it was the year I learned speed cubing, or rather, rubik solving *grins* 30 seconds my personal best, if only I have a DIY cube I could have the world at my feet, okay... maybe not -.- notwithstanding, I'm glad it's over, time to move on. Tertiary education the next destination, a even more hell of a ride maybe?

Holidays had made me otiose. Had been ignoring my blog, and all those promises to blog harder mystically evaporate to the atmosphere. Apologised for that :x I bet no one reads also. hah!

Anyhow,

Work harder than ever, continue to amaze everyone.

And to all my friends who I guess are still adapting to the life of form 4 (you know who you are), as far as I concerned it'll not be a honeymoon year as people claimed, so buckle up, pull your socks up, dominate all the tough tests you'll be facing =]

Just when I thought birthdays are getting unremarkable these days, yesterday, somehow was one of the better birthday I had for years. Phone calls and text messages starting glutting in as the clock ticked midnight. THANK YOU PEEPS! Those were very very veryyyy thoughtful, my heart was affected dearly =) Li Ann however was the precise of all, called exactly 12am, followed by Su-Szien who called from India, and then Vi Vian form her grandmother house! Thank dears! The girls of my life! HAHA :P

Plurkers were amazing that moment, there were roughly 30+ plurks wishing me happy birthday. I just wanna tell you all that every wishes were profoundly appreciated. Thank you :]

Of course, thanks to my family also, although my mum kinda messed up my birthday with my brother. =____________=

I spent the day with three of my 6 years buddies - Wing Hong, Shih Yik, and the ever gleeful Min Xiang. Went to Queens, watched 2 movies - Twilight (again), and Beast Stalker. Surprisingly, Twilight was as interesting as ever. You still win Liann. Ate ice-cream at Svenson and dinner at Paddington of Pancakes, well burnt a hole in our pocket though, a big one. =x

I hate the phrase 'a must win game' because it has been so thirstily overdrove in this modern era of football, almost to the point where it's words have lost their true meaning, but it has to be said that for this young Gunners to lift the Barclays Premier League trophy, this game, away to Stamford Bridge, is a must win game.

Arsenal got a much needed midweek win in Europe thanks to the pink boots of Nicklas Bendtner, through an exponentially improved performance will be required to take down Chelsea at home. I wanted Arsenal to be the team to break Chelsea's invincible home record. but Xavi Alonso and Liverpool already have claimed that honour early in the season. So let's aim to continue the frustration that Chelsea have experienced against the big four at home this season, and claw ourselves back into the title race at the expense of the mightily Blues.

Predictions anyone?

Taking A Chance On Love

Okay Liann, you win! Twilight was not so bad as I presumed. But that doesn't means it rocks! :P

The blueprint to the brooding bloodsucking teen angst romancer Twilight has it's build-in advantages. For starters, it's based on the extremely popular Stephanie Meyer best-selling teen novels, which I have not read yet. Secondly, Meyer's series of gothic-style romantic books have captivated the imagination of countless teenaged girls (notably, liann, mayyi, chiayi, etc) :P thus developing a cult following of sorts. Thirdly, the unconventional aspects of Twilight youthful "love story' between an independently spirited brunette high school junior and her connection with a mysterious, power-faced heartthrob vampire is something monumental to swooning girls everywhere. No doubt these factors are something too tempting not to take a bite in entertaining conviction.

The new kid in town is Isabella Swan or Bella as widely known, a dark-haired beauty that had recently moved from Pheonix to live in a small rural community in Washington State. The decision to move in with her sheriff father in Forks, Washington is only fitting for Bella. Besides, what stability can this girl experience with her mother who's on road with her new husband, a flaky minor league baseball player? Bella is the type of secure person that has never let her self-esteem get entangled with the trendy 'in-crowd' at her old high school Arizona. So it's no big deal for her to adjust at Forks High School where Bella goes with the flow.

Much like the school quaint atmosphere, the town of Fork has its low-key charm. The setting includes cozy diners, friendly folks, too friendly to be exact and breathtaking scenery to ease the day's tension. There are some setbacks - mainly the consistent dreary weather and head-scratching animal attacks that have overcome with sleepy hamlet. Of course the slaughtered creatures will have an impact that is crucially symbolic to the carnivorous culprits that prey on their carcasses.

Gradually, Bella forms a special bond with a striking pale-faced loner named Edward Cullen. At first Edward seemed like an anomaly to the observant Bella but they become closer especially when the tall and freakish boy saves her from a potentially doomed car accident. Soon, the tandem realizes their attraction for one another. As they are connected as 'soulmates' on a a larger soulful scale, Bella discovers Edward's secret - he's a vampire struggling with discipline to fight his urges for human blood, her blood.

Actually, Edward is considered a good vampire with moral convictions. Still, he is resisting the temptations to suck his beloved Bella's blood as well as the other human specimens that must be ideal targets for him. Edward eventually takes his precious Bella to meet his blood-sucking relatives that embrace the beautiful brunette as their own. In fact, Edward and his love ones must dine on animals' blood while labeling themselves as 'vegetarians'. It's awfully difficult to avoid the human blood for these vamps as it would be considered richer and potent for digestions. Nevertheless, they fight off the natural instinct and cater to the consciousness of their dire existences.

The juicy angle to Twilight is the lingering premises as to whether the unorthodox relationship of these unordinary lovebirds can sustain the unpredictable pressures at hand. Can Edward continue to starve off his intense need to drink his treasured Bella's flourishing blood? Will Bella sidesteps a couple of persistent admirers that may cause problems for her long devotion for Edward? Also, can the resilient Edward prevent further damage when a band of human-hungry vampires invade the scene and find interest in making Bella their flesh-feasting focus of the macabre moment?

One can see why Twilight is such the rage for teen-screaming girls to cause such a rage for this plasma-pulsating melodrama. First, it doesn't hurt that the film's leading lad Pattison seems to be the 'pin-up prince of the mouth' for adoring chicks that tremble in his charismatic presence on and off screen. As Edward, Pattinson is an unlikely 'bad boy' superhero with a moralistic purpose to protect and serve the interests of his lauded lady love. He's safe when he should be sinister, resounding when he should be rustic and rowdy. What young girl wouldn't want to trade places with Steward's Bella when you have an sensitive, dreamboat vampire in your emotional corner? (As far as I noticed, Liann, Mayyi and Nirmal had already did that! Girls.......) The fact that Pattison's contemplative blood-sucking boytoy isn't the traditional fanged reprobates provides a whole new spin on the 'opposite-sides-of-the-tracks' affection between disenchanted youths.

No doubt faithful fans of Meyer's book will embrace Twilight regardless of whether it's true to the written word or not. Giddy girls may find the dashing duo of Bella/Edward a romantic revelation to behold on bloody bliss. Hmmm... Romeo and Juliet? As for the remaining movie audience, they're welcomed to chomp into a delirious yet disjointed vamp fable low in its blood count.

GRADE: B-

PS: Watched that alone, everyone went for Madagascar. ==
