As you might have heard, the subject of gambling is once again on the legislative agenda given our state's chronic lack of funding for needed services. The governor has set up a commission to study the pros and cons, and part of their research is a "listening tour" around the state. It's coming to Berlin next week on Feb, 13 and will be held at the White Mountain Community College. According to organizers, the purpose is "for citizens to talk about their hopes, fears, visions and
values on both sides of this issue. The focus of the effort is not to advocate
for one side or the other, but rather to encourage fair, honest and respectful
conversations."

Hope to see you there. Since Berlin is one of the places targeted for a Casino, we owe it to ourselves to be part of the conversation. Hope to see you there.

I'd been watching the storms come over the mountains from my perch on School Street
since Friday – fire in the fireplace, polar fleece aplenty, enjoying the winter as only someone raised in New England can do.

But shortly after I hit "send," shipping the last chapter off to my editor, I donned my boots, grabbed a shovel and dug my self out. I grabbed my camera and decided to see what I could see. The answer was, not much, since it was still snowing and the normally glorious views were still shrouded in gray. But I did get a glimpse of a the North Country that one doesn't often see.

I made my way up School to Spring Street,
and then took a right on Hillside a steep upward climb that almost always yields a perfect shot or two. I pass a woman, a considerably older than myself coming down the street who greets me with a smile that would light up a room. "Isn't it great out here?," she asked. "I couldn't stay inside a minute longer." I agreed with her, at which point she looked at me quizzically and said "Don't I know you? Lori, right ?" and I responded, "No, Katie." She reached out her hand warmly and said, "It's so good to see you, I haven't seen you in years, how have you been?"

Truth be told, as far as I know, I've never set eyes on her before, but the warmth of her eyes and strength of her handshake was all that mattered. I said fine, she wished me a happy New Year and we went on our way.

Next I ran into a man who was clearing his driveway and brushing snow off his car. "How far do you have to go? Can I give you a ride?" he asked. I explained that "no, thank you, I'm really out for the exercise." He explained that he thought my car couldn't make it up the hill, and wanted to make sure I could get where I was going. I thanked him profusely and continued up the hill.

Another woman, easily in her 60s was finishing up the shoveling of her very long driveway and stopped, leaned on her shovel and said, "isn't it beautiful out?" We chatted a bit, agreed that it was indeed beautiful. She wished me a happy New Year, and went on with her shoveling and I continued up the hill. After a few more good wishes along the way, I made it up to my favorite view,
only to find that it was all pretty gray.
So I headed down again, taking the long way home down Norway Street to the river.

I heard a shout and take NHPR out of my ears, and there 's a man shoveling at least 18 inches of snow off his roof. "Happy New Year" he shouted at me. I wished him the same and once again, we agreed that it was a great day.

Now I'm sure it was just as great a day, and perhaps even better in Florida and California and Arizona, where my friends have been sending me tempting invitations and weather reports. But for now, the kindness of strangers is keeping me plenty warm, thank you.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/coosconversations/rBcT/~4/Xf04CMf37cc" height="1" width="1" />

Halloween Dinner/Dance Berlin, NH VFW Hall.
October 31st 5pm to Midnight

Fun-filled
evening to benefit 2 year old Emily Masters. Emily has
hydrocephalus as well as a severe brain abnormality in which more than half of
her brain was damaged and never developed. She is now two years old and can't
walk, talk, is legally blind and now has to be fed strictly through a tube. She
also has a seizure disorder. Emily, despite all of these challenges has one of
the most unique little personalities on the planet. She coos and laughs and her
little eyes light up and you just know that she’s, above all, a truly beautiful
little angel, right here on earth. Every moment with her is not just a
blessing, it’s a miracle. Besides the expense of taking her to Boston for
appointments, she often requires long stays in Boston that require parking
costs, extensive copays as well as transportation/food etc for Mom and Dad.
Emily requires therapy four days per week. Emily’s insurance only covers so
many therapy visits per year and within just a few months, the therapy is paid
out-of-pocket. Emily also needs special equipment that is not covered fully by
medical insurance such as a stander, wheelchair and special seats for bathing,
sitting and will need a handicap bed. Emily’s home also needs modifications to
become handicap accessible as she grows and her parents have more and more
trouble carrying her.

On one hand, it is nice to know that our little local election is important enough to solicit this kind of response, and as such should be a call to arms to Berlin residents to get out and vote for the kind of future they want our town to have.
On the other hand it is a sign that just because we're hundreds of miles from Washington DC, doesn't mean that corporate influence can't find its way into politics.
The health insurance companies started their war against health care reform with a $5billion war chest, and announced early in the campaign that they would be spending $1 million a day to oppose it much of that funding elections of Senators who have come out against reform efforts .
On a smaller scale, this is exactly what Laidlaw management and investors were trying to do by directing money to the candidate most supportive of their views.
The problem with this systems is that individuals and small businesses who are facing a choice between buying oil or food or medicine, don't have the luxury of such largess for the candidates that represent their points of view. The good news is that on a national scale, a lot of little online donations can add up to a great deal of money, as we saw with last year's election.
The bad news is that, on a local scale, corporate funding can essentially drown out the voice of those individuals and small business.
Which is why everyone should read Mr Eisele's story and then offer to volunteer their time, effort and energy for the candidate of his/her choice. Let's send the corporate bullies a message that deep pockets and expensive lobbyists have no place in local politics.<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/coosconversations/rBcT/~4/FlXwoULqBWI" height="1" width="1" />
