Motor vehicle collisions remain the most common cause of injury to children in Arizona, and more than 85% of child safety seats are installed, placed, or used incorrectly.

The Prescott Police Department, in partnership with the Yavapai County Community Health Services and Chino Valley Fire Department, will host a child safety seat inspection event along with a bicycle rodeo on Saturday, February 11, 2012.

The event will take place in the parking lot of the C-A-L Ranch store located at 1048 Willow Creek Road in Prescott and will run from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This event is free to the public.

Nationally certified child safety seat technicians will be on hand to provide instructions on the proper installation of child safety seats, as well as inspect seats for any safety recalls. "We also encourage parents to bring their children, along with their bicycle and helmet, to participate in the bicycle rodeo," says Prescott PD spokesman, Lt. Andrew Reinhardt. "Prescott Police Department bicycle officers will be on hand to provide safe riding tips, along with proper helmet fitting, and children can test their skills on the riding course."

Free child safety seats will be available for those families who are unable to afford the purchase a safe seat for their child. Lt. Reinhardt adds: "The Prescott Police Department would like to recognize and thank the sponsors of this event for their donations and their support of helping keep the children of our community safe: Arizona Governors Office of Highway Safety, C-A-L Ranch Stores, Costco, Walmart, Target and Little Caesars Pizza."

Replacement of historic wall at Lindley Park nears completion

Parks & Recreation Director Joe Baynes says the 1940s era rock wall at Ken Lindley Park that presented a public safety concern, has been removed with grading of the redesigned area now 90% complete. "In place of the compromised wall will be a slope landscaped with trees and earth tone rip-rap (fractured rock)," confirms Baynes. "Labor for the rock installation will be provided by Yavapai County Adult Probation and we expect the project to be completed by the end of February."

Baynes adds that a short section of the original wall that did not present a safety issue has been retained and will be incorporated into the new design. Reopening of the playground will be concurrent with the project's completion.

Public library lecture series: Storyteller Dimock floats Colorado River tale

In 1911 Ellsworth and Emery Kolb launched an expedition down the Green and Colorado Rivers in two state-of-the-art wooden rowboats. The boat design and technique for rowing them were devised by Nathaniel Galloway, and would dominate whitewater travel in the West for another twenty years.

To commemorate the Kolb Centennial, Brad Dimock built an exact replica of Emery Kolb's Edith and rowed it through all the remaining significant whitewater on the Kolb route. A career boatman Dimock now puts the Kolbs, their boats, and techniques into the grand scheme of western whitewater. A consummate storyteller, Dimock augments the amusing tale with still and moving images. Dimock is also the author of Sunk without a Sound, the story of the mysterious Colorado rafting trip of Glen and Bessie Hyde.

"Boats, Boatmen and Techniques of the Colorado River: A Meditation on the Kolb Expedition Centennial" with Brad Dimock. Canyon Country Lecture Series, 2 p.m. February 12 at the Prescott Public Library.

The Grand Canyon Association, KNAU and the library partner to present these popular lectures.
Programs are made possible with funding from the Friends of the Prescott Public Library.

Mayor, council members attend creek care booklet release

The Prescott Creeks organization on Thursday presented to the public it's new booklet, Creek Care: Your Stewardship Guide to the Granite Creek Watershed. Amanda Richardson, Watershed Program Coordinator for Prescott Creeks told the audience, "A lot of time, effort, and enthusiasm went into its making, so we felt that its release is worth celebrating."

Prescott Mayor Marlin Kuykendall, Mayor Pro-Tem, Jim Lamerson as well as councilmen Charlie Arnold, Al Carlow, and Chris Kuknyo were also in attendance. "Prescott Creeks and the Watershed Improvement Council have been determined stewards in protecting our watershed areas," says Mayor Kuykendall. "The City of Prescott is proud of their outstanding work and our contribution to the preservation and improvement efforts of our vital tributaries and lakes."

Richardson made copies of the guide available to those in attendance. In addition, 15,000 booklets will be mailed to residents of the City of Prescott and surrounding unincorporated Yavapai County in early February. Copies will be available at the Prescott Creeks office, City of Prescott, Yavapai County, University of Arizona Cooperative Extensions Yavapai County office, as well as local businesses.

The guide is a small, full-color booklet that features the photographs of local photographer and naturalist, Walt Anderson. This project was funded by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality through the Targeted Watershed Improvement Plan Grant program and contributions from the City of Prescott.

Prescott Creeks and the Watershed Improvement Council developed the booklet to provide local residents with information about preventing water pollution and protecting riparian areas in our watershed. It outlines basic practices that homes and businesses can implement to protect our local creeks and lakes from water pollution. "Creek Care" covers topics such as: Storm Sewer vs. Sanitary Sewer; Pollution Pathways; Yard and Pasture Maintenance; Drainage; Erosion Prevention; Riparian Areas; Native Vegetation; Septic Maintenance; and Local Codes, Ordinances, and Permitting.

For the past two years, the Granite Creek Watershed Improvement Council has been studying the water quality in Prescott's creeks and lakes. The goal of the Council, consisting of representatives from the City of Prescott, Yavapai County, University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, Prescott National Forest, Arizona Department of Transportation, and citizen volunteers, is to identify the sources of nutrients and E. coli bacteria that impair water quality in Granite Creek and Watson Lake and to design solutions to improve water quality. With approximately 1,500 private property owners along Granite Creek and its main tributaries, educating and empowering residents to play a role in caring for our creeks and riparian areas may be the most critical element to the long-term improvement of surface water quality.

Prescott PD to participate in Super Sunday Tri-city DUI Task Force

Through grant funding made possible by the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety, the Tri-city DUI Taskforce will conduct a saturation patrol on Super Bowl Sunday. The program is part of a sustained effort to combat impaired driving. "With many parties associated with the Super Bowl, the Tri-city DUI Taskforce would like to remind people of the need to make good choices when celebrating and enjoying the game," says Lt. Andrew Reinhardt, spokesman for Prescott PD. "If you drink, don't drive. Please designate a driver or call a cab. Last year, Arizona ranked 6th in the Country for DUI violations that resulted in which 25% of accidents were contributed to impaired drivers involving 194 deaths."

The Tri-city DUI Taskforce will establish a command post in the parking lot of Yavapai College, in addition to patrolling all of Yavapai County. "Remember, driving impaired is never worth the monetary loss or the physical and emotional devastation that can be caused by simply making a bad choice to drink and drive," adds Lt. Reinhardt. "Drive sober, designate a driver, or call a cab to stay safe."
