This was quite an experience, I am happy that the audience was able to take away something valuable from it.  I must praise the great work that the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited (BPWCCUL) is doing. The Thrift Club is much more than just teaching their young customers how to save. It is essentially a community group where the children learn skills that will serve them for life along with various social event. 

I must also thank Sue Morris and Beverley Lynch and the team at Bay & Wellington Creative Services Inc. for putting together a great event and helping to feel at ease even though I was a bit nervous!

I have been a little on the quiet side in speaking about the Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation and the drive to become the #1 Entrepreneurship hub in the world.

Let us be candid! You know me! 

I know a lot of people are skeptical, as you should be, about this vision. I am not going to come to you and try to make a point that this initiative is going to be easy, because it it not. Now for those of you familiar with Barbados, you know that there is lots of room for improvement in the way we do business. 

We have heard talk in abundance on the platform, on the call in programs and in several other forums. We have had some people doing things in their own world and trying to 'fight the good fight'.

Now I think the Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation is made of accomplished entrepreneurs and the type of people who, when they speak, people listen.  The founding members where Peter Boos, Derek Browne, Dr. Jeannine Comma, Damian McKinney, Keith Miller, Bryan Pearce, Pippa Pomeroy, Alex Pratt, Basil Springer and Rick Switzer. It is also supported by many of the better known entrepreneurs in Barbados Sir Kyffin Simpson, Bizzy Williams, CO Williams, Peter Olde and others of similar ilk.

If you had to select a sports team to bet your money on, who will you select and why? 

I have always loved building new things and I am always full of ideas and I believe entrepreneurship gives me the opportunity to explore this to its maximum. I am glad I have been selected to play with a quality team, that is encouraging me to aspire to greater things and grow a little bit. 

To those of you who might be skeptical, I think there is no better way to put it than …

When your customers/fans keep asking you the same questions, especially via your social media profiles, they are not trying to be annoying. What they are really doing, is showing you where the "market" is trending. The questions they ask highlight the ever evolving desires of your target market. 

You might have to get over yourself and infinite understanding of your product and customers and consider the questions that your customers are asking. This has been a challenge I have had to overcome. I had been so focused on the product and what it is supposed to be that I was not listening to the questions that customers have been asking. I assumed that they didn't understand the world of social media and so they were asking questions purely out of their ignorance. The truth is you should never underestimate the intelligence of your audience. 

In most cases they understand their problems and challenges better that you do and their questions are a gift to you and your business. These questions provide the basis for you to gain a better understanding of your market. They can be great in helping you to spot new trends early and make the most of them.

I am not saying that social media has replaced other forms of market research, but it is important to take advantage of what is in front of you.

Now I have a question to you. Are you ready to add some extra hours to your day to adapt your business to this new information your customers are presenting to you?

Corey Graham 2.0 & John C. Maxwell @ Masters Of Excellence Conference In Curacao

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Masters Of Excellence Conference in Curacao. This conference was a big deal for me as it featured one of my mentors, John C Maxwell. I have been following John's work since 2003 and this is the first time I have been able to see him live. Imagine getting a 7 year old book finally signed by the author! His teachings on leadership have had a significant impact on my life and they have helped me to be in the position I am in today.

Let me take this time to publicly thank the Masters Of Excellence organization esp. Rudy Poell & Trevor Nisbeth for inviting me. I look forward to attending other Master Of Excellence conferences in the near future around the Caribbean.

Curacao, Hyatt Regency & The Masters Of Excellence Conference

Curacao is a beautiful and diverse country with influences ranging from Dutch to Spanish to English. I really wish I was able to spend more time there and experience more of it. I haven't spoken to a single person who has been there and didn't love it! Next time i will do some exploring.
The newly built Hyatt Regency provided an excellent backdrop for this conference. It beautifully designed with marble floors and the like. 

The Masters Of Excellence 

The Masters of Excellence organization did a good job handling the logistics. It was a pleasure to help them out with a few of the last minute changes on the night before the conference.

John C. Maxwell Takes The Stage

John didn't disappoint. His presentation was absolutely fantastic. He is a gifted speaker and teacher. What stood out for me was how he makes sure he communicates with his audience i.e. he ensures that his knowledge transfers to his audience. He keeps it simple and makes sure to engage his audience on each point. He avoids using confusing terms or adding unnecessary sophistication to convey his message. His aim as he says it, is to add value and equip people. He is also a bit of a comedian, and uses a lot of humour to keep the attention of his audience and to cement his points.

John spoke for half the day on accomplishing your dreams and the 5 levels of leadership. He packed in a lot because as he said, he didn't take another plane trip for nothing. He came to make sure he could teach and add value to the audience.

I am honestly still digesting the pearls of wisdom he shared that day. He has rekindled my desire to teach and equip other people. You can expect me to share more with you in time. For now, I will just share the key things that I have been thinking about, implementing, digesting and teaching to other people since the conference.

The Key Lessons That Have Been On My Mind

The dream journey is hard. The first question John asked us, which is still fresh in my memory is,

Is this dream yours?

He explained that it is abnormal for us to follow our own dreams. We are most accustomed to living the dreams other people have for us. This principle helped to put things in perspective for me. It cut through some of the conflicts I have had in my life like a laser. When you consider this deeply, you realize that this is a key point of frustration for many of us. We don't readily follow our own dreams because it is uncomfortable and it feels abnormal.

The 5 levels of leadership was another key lesson for me. The 5 levels of leadership is his next book due out very soon. He has been writing it for the last 10 years!

The core take away for me from this session was that a leader can be on different levels of leadership (influence) with each person he is leading. Out of respect for John's intellectual property, that it all i will say here. You go buy the book when it is released. Personally I think it is the second level to the 21 irrefutable laws of leadership.

The law of process is another point that has stuck with me since the conference. He described it using the power of 5. He says, choose 5 activities that will move you closer towards you goals. Then do them every day, including weekends and holidays. If you can do this you will experience significant growth in your life. You will be amazed at the things that you start to accomplish.

It is a principle that I have practiced with various goals/skills at different moments of my life. Photography is a great example of this.

My challenge now is to find my power of 5, build a good structure around it and stick it out for the rest of my life.

Teaching and equipping persons was another point I took away. I need to make this into a more deliberate and pre-mediated exercise. I love to coach and I have been feeling great about my successes in teaching a few executives and celebrities the principles of social media (through Drenalin Productions). More on this service to come.

Finally John spoke about buying your dream. This links back to the first thing I talked about owning you own dream. I made this one the last point is shared because it is so so significant.

John explained, there are few better feelings we can have other than the birth of a dream. He says, it is so easy to give birth to a new dream. It is very intoxicating process, and it is easy to get high off of it.

The challenging part is in the purchase of that dream especially after the high wears off. When you think of it like that, it put things into perspective.

To buy a dream especially the big ones, you are going to have to invest significant resources in it. You are going to have to spend your time, money and energy to purchase that dream. It is likely to cost more than you initially imagined and to take longer than you initially anticipated. However, if it truly is your dream, you will have no problem investing into it as you feel a sense of ownership for that dream.

There is so much more that I can say about the conference, but i will end it here. It was a fantastic experience and I am still learning!

Wow, I am featured in the traditional media. Fascinating! 

I have to say, I am very grateful to Coretta Joe, Co-Editor of youth magazine – Attitude for this feature. Attitude is a magazine for young people by young people.

I must say that Coretta was very professional in the way she approached me to get the interview. She was especially good in the polite and artful way she followed up with me. This was after I didn't get back to her and her deadline was fast approaching.

I know some of you might be thinking, I wonder if Corey got any payment for this story. Sadly no, however I am think that if we get together and buy all of the Attitude magazines off the shelves, then maybe something can work out. It could be a follow up feature…then Coretta might have a little budget or ad space to share with me! LOL…

… That's the entrepreneur in me talking, as you well know, we are always looking for a way to access some free publicity.

I truly believe that, Coretta and the team at Attitude Magazine pulled together a great issue. It is focuses on the world of social media in Barbados, from the perspective of the 13 – 21 year old. This makes it a very interesting read, with articles like "Do you think that using social media networking tools such as Facebook, Blackberry Messenger and Twitter hurt relationships?"

It is important that we work with young people and give them a chance to show their true colours. Don't just talk about supporting the youth, go out, buy a paper and read the great content they have been able to put together. Take some time to understand what their world is like. This is an important step if you are every going to be able to relate with them.

Since reading the book in 2004, I have been able to decipher how various projects and businesses have risen or fallen on leadership. It is invaluable for you to be able to evaluate things with a leadership bias, it will help you understand which projects or businesses can take you the the next level and which simply can't. In the Caribbean, I think we need pay enough attention to leadership and developing it as a part of our culture. We have the capacity for great things, however I believe that the personal and public leadership is lacking to turn this potential into actual. 

Alrite and with that I am off to listen to the "World's #1 Expert on Leadership". I look forward to sharing any insights with you. I am excited.
