Coronado’s Real Estate Community Is Excited to Participate in Holiday House!

CORONADO, CALIFORNIA: November 13, 2011 – Gerri-Lynn Fives, 2010 President of the Coronado Real Estate Association and a REALTOR® with Prudential California Realty in Coronado is excited to volunteer in SDAR’s Holiday House!

The Coronado real estate community is pleased to inaugurate a holiday effort to help San Diego’s children, military, homeless, and senior citizens.  Gerri-Lynn Fives, 2010 President of the Coronado Real Estate Association (CREA), and a REALTOR® with Prudential California Realty in Coronado was excited to volunteer Prudential California Realty in Coronado to assist the San Diego Association of REALTORS® (SDAR) with their inaugural “Holiday House.”

Gerri-Lynn Fives reports that donations will be accepted at all three of Prudential’s offices in Coronado; 101 Orange Avenue, 955 Orange Avenue and 511 Grand Caribe.  “Blue Bins” are located in the lobby of each of the offices.  The Coronado Real Estate Association, located on the second floor of the Chase Manhattan Bank in Coronado is also accepting donations.  Donations will be collected from November 1 through December 8 to help fill the “Holiday House” with items to be donated to local charities.

“The Donovan’s family of restaurants is proud to sponsor the Holiday House and partner with SDAR to continue our support of the community and local charities,” said Dan Shea, Owner of Donovan’s Steak & Chop House.  “The YWCA of San Diego County is thrilled to participate in the Holiday House,” said Carol Ann Chambers, Development Manager of the YWCA, which operates Becky’s House.  “In order to brighten up the holiday season, each year we provide gifts, toys, and gift cards to all of our families.  This would not be possible without the support of the community, including organizations such as the San Diego Association of REALTORS®,” Chambers said.

Charities benefiting from the Holiday House include: Adopt-A-Classroom, Becky’s House, Homefront San Diego, It’s All About the Kids, Marine Toys for Tots, The Salvation Army, San Diego Armed Services YMCA, San Diego Center for Children, San Diego Food Bank, Second Chance, and Senior Community Centers.  An abbreviated list of items to donate includes: Clothes for children and adults, baby supplies and diapers, car seats, toys and games for kids, school supplies, books, videos, DVD’s, educational and art supplies, non-perishable packaged and canned food, gift cards from major retailers and grocery stores, gas cards from major gas companies, amusement park passes, movie and sport passes, sports equipment, appliances, furniture, computers and laptops, kitchen utensils, personal hygiene products, tools, linens, bedding and towels.   If you are interested in learning more about the charities please visit www.sdar.com .

11/11/11 will be the Veterans Day of ALL Veteran’s Days!  Coronado, California will make history when ESPN airs a college basketball game between Michigan State and North Carolina.  A rematch of the 2009 NCAA championship game—will be played on the deck of the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier U.S.S. Carl Vinson.  Berthed at North Island Naval Air Station, in beautiful Coronado, California the Vinson will carry a basketball court with seating for about 7,000 spectators, mostly U.S. military personnel. President Barack Obama, the nation’s basketball-fan-in-chief will be in attendance.  For some high enough in the stands, there’s a view of the San Diego skyline across the bay.  As a local REALTOR ® in Coronado I am thrilled that the town that I live, work and play in will be the back drop of such an epic event.  I hope that ESPN can capture the essence of the Coronado Community as it is televised nationwide. I would love for people to see the beauty of Coronado and say “I would love to live there.”   As a Veteran myself, I am thrilled about this game being played for our military members who serve our country. The community of Coronado is bursting with pride with the reopening of the Coronado Village Theatre. After being closed for more than a decade, the 1940’s Coronado Village Theatre reopened its doors in June. The art deco marquee and façade of the Coronado Village Theatre has been refurbished and is once again the focal point on Orange Avenue in Coronado.

It seems that taking in a movie at the Coronado Village Theatre is a rite of passage for any local. The single-screen theatre was the place where everyone in town gathered to see the latest films. I remember in years past taking my children to The Coronado Village Theatre. Located in the center of Coronado, it was easy to walk to and didn’t require a drive across the Coronado Bay Bridge. Unfortunately, as the years went on, the movie theatre management didn’t keep up and residents of Coronado began leaving the aging Coronado Village Theatre for the more modern multi-screen theaters across the San Diego Bay. In 2000 the theatre closed after falling into serious disrepair.

Bringing the Coronado Village Theatre back to life was no easy task. Fortunately Coronado City Officials and concerned Coronado residents were keen to save the 64-year old theater. For more than eight years a broad-based group of supporters worked to find a way to reopen the Coronado Village Theatre. In 2008, Coronado’s redevelopment agreed to provide $2.675 million grant to Vintage Theatre to ensure its long-term operation. “We feel the investment Coronado made to revitalize the Village Theatre will be returned to residents and movie patrons for many decades to come,” said Coronado City Manager Blair King in the recent issue of Coronado Currents, The Official publication of the City of Coronado.

Everybody loves Coronado and I love selling real estate in Coronado! What a great community to live, work and play in. A National Citizen Survey reported that Coronado, California has some of the most satisfied residents in the country. Coronado used the National Citizen Survey, a joint effort between the National Research Center and the International City/County Management Association, to produce a statistically valid study. Questionnaires were mailed to 1,200 random
Coronado homes (mine was not one of them) and 357 completed surveys were received. Apparently the response rate (31%) was a typical response rate for a citizen survey.

Over 500 cities across the United States, including about 70 that are categorized as resort communities, have participated in the Nation Citizen Survey. Coronado’s results were ranked nationally, as well as among resort communities with populations under 55,000.

Nationally, Coronado ranked high in many of the 110 categories, including:

• · No. 1 of 318 communities in overall quality of services
• · No. 2 out of 255 communities for personal safety in the neighborhood
• · No. 1 of 280 communities in the quality of life
• · No. 3 of 238 communities in recreation opportunities
• · No. 1 of 264 communities in places to retire

When compared solely against resort communities ~ including cities such as Sedona, Arizona; Steamboat Springs, Colorado and North Palm Beach, Florida ~ Coronado, California ranked in the Top 5 in 77 of 110 measures, which included 46, number 1 rankings. Areas in which Coronado ranked #1 included recreation programs, library services and value of services for taxes paid. The survey and results can be found on the Coronado website www.coronado.ca.us.

As one of Coronado’s more tech savvy real estate agent’s, I am excited to report that the City of Coronado has decided to stay relevant in the new age of social media and it is now on Twitter!  Twitter is a social-networking and micro blogging service that allows users to send Tweets. A tweet, once identified as a noise a bird made, is now defined as short text messages no longer than 140 characters to “followers.”  Coronado is one of the few cities in San Diego that regularly send out “Tweets,” short messages via a Twitter account.

Traditional communication methods are being consumed by social media in a quick-moving, ever-changing new world.  Coronado is using Twitter to post information about upcoming city meetings.  During the recent power outage, those who were already following @CoronadoCity were able to receive important information as the City of Coronado Tweeted news and outage updates.

Forbes recently announced its
picks for America’s Prettiest Neighborhoods. As a REALTOR® and resident of
Coronado I am proud to announce that Coronado, California made the list!  According to the Forbes article, “Not all neighborhoods are created equal.” According to the article, Forbes
enlisted the help of Kendra Williams, travel editor from Midwest Living and
Mark Sedenquist, publisher of an encyclopedic online compendium of the
country’s best road trips to compile a list of the prettiest neighborhoods in
the country. The article reported that some of the neighborhoods are nestled
within larger cities or towns, and a couple are towns in their own right, but
are so unified in their look or appeal that they are as closely-knit as a
neighborhood. The common denominator is that all are unique in one way or
another, and represent the best of the country’s beautiful communities.”
