6th District Councilman Dee Andrews is pleased to present the Family Free Sunday, at the Museum of Latin American Art, 628 Alamitos Avenue, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 21st.

Long Beach residents are invited to join Councilman Dee Andrews for an afternoon of free family fun and activities at the Museum of Latin American Art, MOLAA, featuring art workshops for the whole family and docent led tours of the exhibitions. “One of our Cities greatest assets is the fusion of many cultures. Incorporating art and cultural events like this one is very important to our social awareness”, said Councilman Andrews.

The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) is the only museum in the United States exclusively dedicated to the presentation of modern and contemporary Latin American art. As such, MOLAA plays a critical role in the vitality of our nation’s cultural landscape, serving the significant and fast growing Latino population.

The event is sponsored by Target. There will be free entry to the museum and free parking. RSVP is required. For more information or to RSVP call the office of Councilman Dee Andrews at (562) 570-6816.

Save the Water: Grass lawns require more water and chemicals per foot and cause more runoff than almost any other kind of landscape! About 50 percent of the water used at the average home is for landscape irrigation.

Save the Planet: Grass lawns are responsible for much of our urban runoff, runoff carrying lawn clippings, fertilizers and other pollutants into our precious coastal marine habitat.

Drinking water supply in Southern California has been permanently reduced. One of the best ways to reduce our need for water is to transform our grass lawns into a beautiful landscape utilizing attractive drought tolerant plants, reducing runoff, attracting animals like butterflies and hummingbirds, and requiring very little maintenance.
The public is invited to participate in the Celebration of Green Long Beach Day on June 11 declared in a Mayoral Proclamation by Mayor Bob Foster for a day to unite the Long Beach community to recognize the importance of a “Green, Clean Long Beach.” There will be many environmentally focused events throughout the City of Long Beach, including one of the most visible community-building efforts celebrated on this day, the 3rd annual Green Long Beach! Festival.

A major feature of the Green Long Beach! Festival is the “Green Market,” which showcases many exciting local artisans and eco-innovators. The festival coordinators created it as such in order to highlight the emerging green economy developing in the Long Beach area, as well as to support the local vendors that have continued to be leaders within the green movement. The event will also feature thought-provoking educational workshops as well as the motivating music and artistic works of various local personalities.

“Green Long Beach! wants to focus on bringing together people and encouraging connections and collaborations in the community. We also want to make it accessible to people that are new to this movement, and that bridging the gap between newcomers and seasoned sustainability experts is very important,” stated Tiffany Chen, Green Long Beach! Volunteer. “We hope that this year there will be something for everyone, whether you want to learn about how to green your home or just need a place to drop off your old cell phone, come by the festival on Saturday.”

The purpose of this exciting gathering is to connect with the public while inspiring and igniting change within the community. A cell phone recycling drive will also be incorporated into the event for the public to donate old (working or non-working) cell phones. Attendees are encouraged to ride their bikes or arrive via mass transit at the transit mall.

For more information on festival participants and how get involved, visit www.greenlb.org and be sure to come out on the 2nd Saturday in June at the Promenade in downtown Long Beach from 10AM – 8PM.

###

Green Long Beach! is a grassroots organization working within the Catalyst Network of Communities to build a symbiotic collaboration between the myriad of groups and individuals that work to make their hometown a more sustainable city. Visit www.greenlb.org for more event information including a festival map and schedule of performances/workshops.

Background on Harvey Milk:

Harvey Milk was elected to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors in 1977 and became the first openly homosexual elected official in California. Less than a year after taking office Milk was murdered — along with San Francisco mayor George Moscone — by Dan White, a political opponent and former member of the Board. Milk was a charismatic New Yorker who was a graduate of the University of Albany (1951) and a U.S. Navy veteran (discharged in 1955). He moved to San Francisco in 1972 and set up a camera shop in the city’s Castro district, then quickly got involved in local politics. After two unsuccessful bids for a seat as a city supervisor (1973 and 1975), he made it into city politics as an appointee of Mayor George Moscone, then won the 1977 election for a seat (one of six) on the Board of Supervisors. Milk made national news — he was an openly gay elected official at a time when homosexuality was not part of the public debate. The “Mayor of Castro” was a champion of urban neighborhoods and grassroots activism, but he’s most famous for his role as a symbol for gay and lesbian rights. On 27 November 1978 he was killed by Dan White, a disgruntled former city supervisor who felt wronged by Moscone and Milk. White climbed through a window at City Hall and killed both men with a pistol. White’s defense was his “diminished capacity” from depression, exacerbated by sugary junk food — what became known as the “Twinkie defense” (after a popular snack food). White was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to seven years in jail, an outcome that caused a riot outside San Francisco’s City Hall on 21 May 1979 (called the “White Night Riot”). Milk’s legacy as a martyred hero has inspired books, plays and movies, including the Oscar-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) and the Gus Van Sant film Milk (2008, starring Sean Penn as Milk and Josh Brolin as White).

Catalyst is launching a new Emerging Leaders Network comprised of new Executive Directors, Founders, and Business owners. This will be a relational network meaning its an informal support system for those of us passionate enough to start up (or run) our organization but we’re simply trying to figure it all out along the way!

Do you relate with any of these scenarios?

You are so busy running your programs that you don’t have the time to get organized, much less do any strategic planning.

You started your organization but don’t have a financial background so you’re not sure how to create a functional budget or do bookkeeping.

You are surrounded by volunteers and everyone looks to you for leadership so you don’t have anyone to vent your own stress to.

You are so busy operating your organization, you don’t have time to write grants.

You have Board of Directors who are just friends doing you a favor so they’re not necessarily passionate enough to help fund raise for the organization.

You are super confused about which forms you have to file every year and which forms you have to file every two years and some to the state and some to federal and……etc.

You are pretty much your largest and practically only donor and you’ve been funding your group yourself for a while now.

Leadership is paradoxically very lonely.

Yeah, there’s more that we could all probably relate with.

So this Emerging Leaders Network isn’t about doing educational workshops to teach you all of these things. Our relational network is a support system for each other. It’s about building camaraderie with each other. BUT…..we’ll also figure out together what kinds of things we do want workshops and training and equipping on, and then we’ll seek out existing leadership resources that we all can tap in to.

Our first gathering will be on Tuesday, April 26th at 7pm at the Catalyst Space, 430 E. 1st Street, Long Beach, CA 90802. RSVP at eric.leocadio@gocatalyst.org. Come and join us!

Long Beach is making great progress in becoming America’s Most Bike Friendly City. We are building new bike infrastructure, encouraging more bike safety education in our schools, and planning for a city that focuses on people and mobility, not just cars.

Downtown Bike Lanes Open Saturday
You are invited to join Mayor Bob Foster, Vice-Mayor Suja Lowenthal, and Councilman Robert Garcia this Saturday, April 23rd at noon for the Grand Opening of the new separated bike lanes in Downtown Long Beach. We will be meeting at 3rd and Promenade for a celebration that will include the inaugural bike ride, guided bike tours, and family games and activities. These new bike lanes, some of the first dedicated lanes in the country, provide a safer street for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists. These bike lanes are part of a one-year pilot project and were paid for by transportation grants. No city general funds were used.

Honoring Mark Bixby
On Tuesday, April 19th, the City Council voted to unanimously support naming the proposed bicycle and pedestrian bike path on the new Gerald Desmond Bridge after Mark Bixby. As you know, Mark was an avid cyclist, and was the leading city voice on bike policy, advocacy and community engagement. The progress we have made on bike infrastructure and bike policy would not have been possible without Mark’s leadership. Mark was a Long Beach Hero, and I can’t think of a better way to honor and remember him than to name this future bike path after him.

Community Bike Meeting For Downtown Residents
I would also like to invite you to join me and city staff for an update and discussion on current and future bike infrastructure improvements. We will be discussing the new separated bike lanes, new bike sharrows coming to Downtown on Pacific Avenue, and a new bike boulevard that is being planned for Willmore City. The meeting will be held at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center at Cesar Chavez Park at 6:30 pm on Monday, May 2. For more information, please call my City Council Office at (562) 570-6919.

April 20, 2011

Dear Neighborhood Association Members,

2010 was another successful year for Long Beach neighborhood associations, which helped advance Long Beach’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life within the city. We saw continued successes in neighborhood revitalization, citizen participation, and code enforcement. From your direct involvement in planning projects, your efforts have led to the beautification of our parks, neighborhoods, and street parkways, and enrichment of the overall fabric of our city.

Your successes are related to your many outstanding volunteer efforts and contributions toward the betterment of Long Beach. In 2010, the Willmore City Heritage Association (WHCA) won Neighborhood, USA’s “Neighborhood of the Year” first place award in the category of Physical Revitalization – Single Neighborhood, for restoring a 106-year-old house, saving it from demolition, and helping a local family purchase the home – removing two blighted vacant lots in the process. At one Craftsman Village Historic District’s monthly graffiti removal and neighborhood clean up alone, 200 volunteers removed nine tons of trash and debris from surrounding streets and alleys. This is just one of many similar efforts that took place throughout the city. Neighborhood associations have also contributed to greening efforts by planting trees throughout Long Beach. At the North Alamitos Beach Association’s Neighborhood Tree Planting last July, volunteers planted 35 new trees in the area. And the neighborhood associations also help build community, such as the West East-Side Community Association’s extremely successful annual Halloween Carnival at Orizaba Park where approximately 700 people attended the festivities.

In 2011, the Planning Commission will need your help with our planning processes for now and the future. We are working on our Long Beach 2030 plan, which includes evaluating zoning requirements within the city. Our successes in that effort count on community participation and support. We encourage you to recruit and involve as many of your neighbors as possible to participate in the process.

On behalf of all the members of the Planning Commission, we again thank you for your commitment to improving our neighborhoods.

Sincerely,

LBCC Community Photo Contest

Long Beach City College is launching a community wide photo contest from April 20 to April 23, in anticipation of the colleges 85th anniversary in January 2012. The photo contest encourages students, faculty, staff and community members to submit 10 photos shot on the LAC or PCC campus for the contest. The winning photos will be published in a cofee table book called “Viking Glory.”

The photo contest is the brainchild of student Nick Ortiz and advisor Carina Cristiano. This is also a service project of the Men of Aztlan Social Service Club. The project is modled after Justin Rudd’s successful “Say Cheese,” and Blair Cohn’s “Summer Shutters” for the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association.

“Viking Glory is a way for the community and students to capture what they love about Long Beach City College,” said student organizer Nick Ortiz. “We are excited to capture all the beauty and life that exists on both of our campuses.”

“The Viking Glory Project will give us a collective voice through photo journalism,” said Cristiano. “By collaborating with students, departments, disciplines, and community partners, we demonstrate the 85 years of LBCC excellence through photography.”

The 3-Day Photo contest is asking that up to ten photos be submitted by 5:00pm on April 23. Picture submissions must be emailed tovikingglory1@hotmail.com. Please see rules for types of pictures allowed. Model and release forms must be attached for your pictures to be accepted. Please provide model releases for anyone seen in your photography at the time of submission. Rules and forms can also be found at www.lbpp.net. Photos from both the LAC and PCC campus will be accepted. The photos will be showcased in both the coffee table book and in campus art exhibits. Students can use any camera, or phone to take the photos.

I am Long Beach is a storytelling project from the 2011 class of Leadership Long Beach. From their website:

Sharing our stories is the most effective way to bring people together and foster a sense of community. You may walk into a crowded room of strangers but once people engage in genuine dialogue about themselves or their experiences, all of a sudden some of those strangers may feel like long lost friends. Our stories have the power to heal, to liberate, to reinvent the world and make it new again, of nourishing the possibilities held in imagination as well as give people metaphors by which they can better understand their own lives.

When we recount our own stories, we find relationship with others’ stories, breaking down stereotypes and allowing for true inclusion and acceptance. Stories, and our telling of them, can expose inequities in our society and have the ability to empower the oppressed.

I AM Long Beach is comprised of a group of unique individuals, brought together through the Leadership Long Beach Institute, Class of 2011. We each have a story that connects us to one other and our surrounding community. We invite you to share yours….

Please visit them at I am Long Beach .org and share your story….

I have 2 friends younger than me who are veterans of foreign war. Tackling 18 units a piece per semester, the discipline and character of these marines thrive in their academic success. Vinny Marsala and Eric Neyman aren’t even 25 years old yet, Vinny is 22 and Eric is 25. Far from wet behind the ears, these patriots are getting accustomed to civilian life and are only in their early twenties. Assistance with employment, tuition, benefits from Long Beach Veterans Hospital are just a few perks much deserved. We are in Men of Aztlan at LBCC. My friendship with these marines grew as community service volunteering brought out the best in all of us. Their work ethic truly shined as we helped build a house with Habitat 4 Humanity all morning in the rain! The Men of Aztlan social service club at LBCC has guided us to doors of community involvement with Connected Corridor and several non-profit organizations. Our most recent volunteer project included feeding the homeless on skid row and reading books to 1st – 4th graders at a grammar school in Riverside. Our volunteering doesn’t stay local; we do our best to have the furthest outreach and positive effect on as many communities as possible.

I am not the only one dying to ask their opinion about politics and foreign affairs. Have you ever held a discussion with a person from the military about the 3 wars we just experienced in the last 10 years? Since we are living in Historical times, be happy we are on the winning team. Our actions as a nation, whether domestic or foreign carry power. Events inside and out of the country shape our cultural identity as immigrants. The political climate in the United States has drastically changed since September 11th. I had more faith in my government in the 90’s, but I still feel patriotic when viewing a President Obama poster displaying “Yes we can.” You can probably imagine the lively discussions we have together driving to a volunteer event, especially since I get to have conversations with real men of honor. They served our country through the military and still today they keep giving by volunteering. It is humbling to know people like this because they inspire you to give more and do better in life.

We have been living in a military offensive for so long I bet you forgot we are still at war. Our investment in education is evaporating and military defense soaks up our youth. Kennedy said it best, “Don’t ask what the country can do for you, what you can do for it.” There is more history to learn than in your history book, we are living the historical times now.
