With autumn approaching quickly, it’s a opportunity to get out and explore your environment. It’s also a great time to learn about your camera. Yes, that device that takes pictures but you don’t really understand the mechanics behind photography.

Sodoku is great for improving mental processes.

If you’re like me, you have to work harder to remember names and other small pieces of information. But the time and effort you put into remembering certain bits of information is beneficial for your brain. Any stimulus that requires usage of your brain strengthens the memory and how you store new information thereby improving memory.

1. Acronyms - Remember “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” from your algebra days? It hasn’t gone away has it? Using simple acronyms helps you to remember information more accurately, or in that case, the process to figure out an algebra problem, will be forever etched in your mind.
2. Rhymes – Rhymes can be vital to remembering names or any other bit of information that may be worth remembering.
3. Chunking - Putting a long list of information into categories of information may help you better remember.

Regular exercise and eating a proper diet is vital to your brain, and there are plenty of vitamins that can help aid you in memorizing as well. Daily brain exercises and activities keep your brain functioning properly by reading, crossword puzzles, or Sodoku (highly addicting). It is very clear to see that we have an overpopulation of deer in the Town of Chapel Hill.
With that in mind it is for our own safety not to text and drive

Our City Council has been getting involved and a few months back there was a big town forum about our deer population and some of the solutions that we could employ to maintain control.

Chapel Hill does permit urban deer hunting within the corporate limits of our town and this deer hunting must be very well managed.  As of now we don’t believe that there are any financial ties to any of the deer hunting regulations.

And this may seem a little random but it is very relevant.  Please do not text and drive in Chapel Hill. If you hit a deer while text-driving that does not count as deer hunting.  You could hurt yourself and your vehicle.  Many of us see both teens and adults texting while driving their vehicles around town and that’s not cool.  You may think that you have control but text driving is against the law and dangerous.  We really felt like that needed to be said just in case you didn’t know.  (Big Smile goes here)

Television began around the late 1800’s but it wasn’t perfected until the early 1940’s.  Needless to say, it has been out a lot longer than the internet but not longer that reading books.  However, the reputation of television, even with over 4 billion views world wide, has gotten worst over the years for being a huge wast of time.  I read an article that drew a very interesting connection between TV and Reading.

There are lots of TV shows on today that are very educational.  Parents if we spend more time with our children watching TV shows while sharing predictions as to what will happen next or discussing the show over the commercial break it will help to build our children’s thinker and develop comprehension.

Here are a few idea’s on how TV can help viewers tune into reading:

Television and Reading

As you sit in your apartment and watch movies with your kids identify something that can be used as a catapult for reading. Then you can go to the Chapel Hill Public Library and check out books on the subject or do internet research to learn more about it.

Ask your child to come up with a educational TV show concept.  Have them to write it down and help them to grow their ideas, even acting it out can now serve as an educational family night.
