Hey, space pirates! What do a Blassnaught, Two Repton, Slauve, and Tentachlid have in common? They are all pretty big jerks.

I hope you guys are enjoying the story so far. It’s fairly ambitious on my end because it is spending so much time away from the main characters, but I suspect it is worth it.

The concept of kings and queens of space pirates is a relatively deceptive one, as leaders are elected to the position. Of course being able to strong arm another band or two into submission is a great way to acquire votes in one’s favor. Basically we’re looking at something a bit similar to the system of leadership established in Pirates of the Caribbean Three because why the hell not?

Anyway, I urge you all to watch NBC’s Hannibal next Thursday at 10:15pm Pacific because it needs a ratings boost and I don’t want to see it cancelled. It’ll be messy; I’ll cry, and sadness in general does not make for good comics.

This week you should check out Ice Cream Surfer. It’s pretty sweet.

Artificial newscasters are a popular trend in the galaxy at this point as they’re less likely to flub up, and their emotive faces are generally considered to be more honest than most “living” news folk. It also helps that these newscasters can be run constantly with no breaks.

They still can’t predict the weather, however.

Boy, a bunch of new characters to introduce on this page. I’ll get some profiles up on the character guide as soon as I can. For now we have Ms. Mayden and Drakar Vadis from the “The Loneliest Genius”, and the two mantoids are the Wootari brothers: Wulg and Snix.

By the way, did you know the radio edit of Daft Punk’s new single is out there RIGHT NOW? Definitely worth a buy. I have to make a big deal about this because so much of Cosmic Dash is drawn while Daft Punk plays in the background.

Howdy everyone. A few updates to share this week! First of all, I updated the New Readers Guide. It now includes a little bit more information and some nice panels to show off some of the art, as the original page didn’t have much and didn’t do enough to convey the sense of scale of the comic that I wanted it to. Secondly, there is going to be a dedicated Character Guide on the site. Currently it is divided up between the main characters and everyone else, but that will eventually be tweaked with major secondary characters having a defined section. If you do a webcomic and host it through WordPress, you may want to check out Tablepress, a plugin I used to organize that cast page. Made the whole process pretty painless. In addition, Cosmic Dash now has two mirrors in-case the website is down for a period. You can find Cosmic Dash at Comicfury and Smackjeeves. Please consider bookmarking those. I am letting a frequent contributor to the site, Deft Beck, assist in posting comics on those mirrors. Lastly, I modified the output of the RSS feed to include a project wonderful ad. The ad shows up at the bottom of the feed content, so hopefully it is not intrusive for those of you who follow the comic through RSS.

Anyway, today’s update features an individual from the race known as the Shifta. They’re relatively new to the larger galaxy, only having been around for the past fifty years or so, but they’ve already made a bit of a name for themselves due to their replication-talents. They’ve not worked their way to far into the various factions, and they are currently unaligned with any of them, preferring to do their own thing in the frontier region of the galaxy. Then again, because they can shapeshift, they could be anywhere, really. There is a trick to identifying them, though.  Look at eye coloration: bluish green coloration of the eyes may signify a shifta. It’s that very specific shade of bluish green, though, otherwise I very well could be one!

The site recently moved over to a new server, which hopefully will mean less outages. There is no guarantee, but we’ll see what happens. Any downtime should be minimal. It was a bit of an investment of time and money on my part, which is why you should see a little donation graphic to the side of the comic, in addition to a new support page. Rather than using paypal, donations now go directly to Dreamhost to help cover the payments for the hosting. If you enjoy the comic then please consider donating.

Well, here we are at episode 4. This is my biggest story yet as we’ll have 64 pages of story between the two issues. This is also the biggest story yet because of the fact that there are dozens of characters, many who are introduced in these episodes. The season ends with a couple of mini-comics after episode 5, and some real serious stuff goes down in this storyline. I am incredibly excited about what is ahead.

But hey, let’s get a little house-cleaning in order, shall we?

The cover for this issue (and next issue’s cover) was put together by the tremendously talented Conroy Conroy who you may remember from our joint Executor comic that we are still actively working on. She has an interesting sketch project alongside her tumblr. She also does commissions as well.

You may also notice some branding changes. I am not using the Scienteer label anymore, but I still intend to find a use for it eventually. Instead we have a nice colorful corner-box with an additional QR code. Pretty neat huh? Why the QR code that links to the comic? Mostly for the purposes of the printed version of the comic. On that note about printed versions, however, I won’t be continuing print versions of individual issues after the end of season one. I wrote a lengthy post about it. The stories will still be structured like traditional comic issues, but I will focus exclusively on season or arc collections in the future.

I’m curious if there is any interest in a poster of this issue’s cover? It would make a nice companion with next issue’s cover (spoiler, thematic similarities) and I would be thrilled to maybe do a very limited run. By all means, sound off in the comments if you’d want to see a poster.

Lastly, I am gonna harp on my fellow quarkers about getting a new episode of Podwarp together, as I have a mighty urge to podcast again. I’ve considered launching one of my own, but just haven’t quite committed to it. Maybe there could be a let’s play in the future? Those things are common enough as rats these days, but it’d be fun.

As this is the start of a new issue, I wanted to do something special for the webcomics link. So I took to twitter and the webcomic creator’s facebook group and asked people to provide me some links to their comics. Will these be tonally similar to Cosmic Dash? Probably not, but I believe in spreading whatever meager attention I receive to other comics. Always have. By all means, tweet me anytime if you want me to plug your comic, it takes seconds for me to do and I am glad to help.
