Steve Harris of Bluebutter designs everything about pop culture tees with contemporary and retrospective reference to movies, tv, gaming, art and literature. As the designer he try to look at a movie and give it a twist. One of design collection that caught my eyes (and already blogged by some tees bloggers) is The Calvin and Hobbes Mashups. I love the idea to see Back to the Future or Batman in a cute and familiar way — the The Calvin and Hobbes-alike. Steve told me that he loved Calvin and Hobbes as a kid, and couldn’t resist the opportunity to use this style as a format for movie and tv culture.

SKY International Clothing was started back in 2010 when making its T-Shirt line Debut at Metro Department Store Outlets across Indonesia. The concept of SKY was actually a brainchild of Designer (who prefer not to be mentioned here) from Los Angeles with a vision that the “Sky Is The Limit” when it comes to ideas, design and fashion. The idea of Cherry Laundry was inspired by 1950s-60s and the love of local launderette. Dan Dewhurts, they guy behind this brand, told me that his local launderette was just down the road from where he live and its like stepping back in time. Although it needed more then a coat of paint over the years it still very clearly embraces its past.

What cool is that, the launderette still has its original soap dispenser on the wall surrounded by some unbelievably cool posters. Stained pine paneling runs around the interior with a solitary fan buzzing in the corner.After all, although this idea is glamorized by Hollywood,  Cherry Laundry love the idea of people talking to each other whilst they wait for their washing.

Battle of the Depths came forth from wanting to design an elaborately detailed tee shirt depicting an epic battle between Megalodon and Leviathan. Megalodon is a prehistoric Shark which is regarded as one of the largest and most powerful vertebrate creatures to have lived. Leviathan is a giant biblical sea creature mentioned in the books of Job, Isaiah, and Psalms, which is also known as one of the Seven princes of Hell- Envy.

Enclothe‘s Paradox is a hell good tee shirt with illustration that speaks about human-universe paradox unsurely. I really envy an indie publisher which successfully manage its own fashion business, like having its own clothing line. Sure they will get an initial traction by exposing to its subscriber but only a few stay there and stand strong for some time.

And Loyal K.N.G is one of few indie publisher that is currently on both business. I hope the clothing line will be last for long. Because getting people to buy and wear your “logo” tee shirts is not an easy task — especially when you have to play around the logo nicely without getting people to think: nah, another chauvinism logo tee shirt.

What do you do at the age of 15? You either a skateboard’s hipster, Nintendo geek or nerdy bookworm with a huge spectacles. But for Heather Tunches, it was the time to start a company that focus on clothing label — 11:11 APPAREL.

Her inspiration came from her core beliefs and I wanted to share those beliefs with others through positive messages on t-shirts and accessories that I felt would appeal to other people. Cultural Urge is a tiny clothing label by Sebastian who was born in in Buenos Aires, Argentina and grew in Australia to where he is still based today. His childhood was spent enjoying cartoons and fictitious worlds were key inspirations that sculpted his interests.

He then picked vocational study through various institutions over the many years in the fields of Fine Arts, Print Production and Graphic Design before began study as an apprentice at the Sydney Institute of Technology and CGC College of East Sydney where he finalized his qualifications as a Graphic Designer.

Cultural Urge is the label he started recently and produce a few tees that amaze me like Quest 4 Violence “Anatomy of a Hostile Mind” — which then I asked him a question behind the outstanding arty tee. Short interview I conducted to find out more about this tee as well as broad concept of Cultural Urge

[Rangga]: What does this T-shirt Quest 4 Violence “Anatomy of a Hostile Mind” means to you?

[Sebastian]: A profound snapshot into a broken society. This narrative depicts how entry into the world through a corrosive environment can lead to a life of violence, crime and destruction of oneself. Death is what is offered if no other path is pursued. Symbolic imagery is detailed throughout the babies bodies to support this. The hand morphed into a skull also supports this dark theory.

[R]: I saw a form of face in there, how about that?

[S]: The face is illustrated with tattooed tears to symbolise ” The Prison System”. My intentions essentially is not to tell the story but rather for the viewer to create their own philosophical interpretation of components contained within this unapologetic and confronting art piece.

[R]: What’s your influence, apart from your formal study?

[S]: I grew up skateboarding, listening to Metal, Hip Hop, 60′s Rock etc, hence the name “Cultural Urge”. The Tees reflect what I want wear and what my friends want to wear and some people may call that a “Target Market”.

[R]: Tell me a little bit more about Cultural Urge, what’s the philosphy?

[S]: I strive to create art on tees that are lightly branded, individually themed and styled. Placing focus onto the art itself is paramount. The artwork is mostly hand drawn and then worked over digitally to create an effective screen printed piece that is unique and surreal.

[R]: Who did the works behind it? 

[S]: Cultural Urge clothing has a handcrafted appeal unlike any other label. I draw, design and screen print all the artworks myself keeping it inhouse as much as possible. The Tees are of fine cotton allowing me to execute very fine halftone detail and the tees themselves are comfortable to wear.

[R]: Ok, then. Thanks!

Some people agree that global capitalism isn’t working for the American middle class, it makes multinational companies more productive, but the benefits are mostly being enjoyed by the C-suite. The middle class, meanwhile, is struggling to find work, and many of the jobs available are poorly paid.

In recent article I read — Michael Spence, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in economic sciences put this way: “Multinational companies,” he said, “are doing exactly what one would expect them to do. The resulting efficiency of the global system is high and rising. So there is no market failure.” Spence is telling us that global capitalism is working the way it should, but that the American middle class is losing out anyway. Since global capitalism is the best way we’ve come up with so far to run our economy, it then creates quite a dilemma.

So what are we going to do? As I do my own little business here, I’m confident that multinational companies won’t be my next (or last) destination but only to step forward on my own.

If you have chance to try a vintage-style T-shirt with super soft deluxe bamboo cotton material, it could be from Summerjunk. Apparently, this guy — Jon Clough of Northampton — got serious in producing tee shirt line with a very definitive soft aesthetic appeal. Started from fabric choice, combined with the use of super fine meshes — he tried to create some real high quality products: what Summerjunk want to be perceived as brand.

I’m writing from Goodfibres – a website dedicated to crowd-sourcing ethical and sustainable design. We’re not here to plug our t-shirts and designs, but rather to explain the trials and tribulations; joy and frustrations that we have encountered in building our online community, how far we’ve come in a short space of time, and where we feel we’re headed and where we’d like to take you.

To ensure that you’re able to follow our journey with the intrigue that I hope you will, I’ll begin by briefly explaining what it is we do, and how we do it. We’re a clothing site with a difference; we encourage the submission of art and design work to be voted on by the community, with the highest voted pieces going into print to produce unique tees for the world to enjoy. Each piece that is sold generates a commission for the designer as well as a donation to charity.

As you can probably deduce from the above introduction, people and talent are at the heart of our mission, of our goals and of our site. So starting out armed only with a concept, how did we get from 0 pieces of art and 0 designers to where our community is now; a thriving hub of users and designs. I’ll provide a step by step breakdown of how this was achieved.

First you need to define exactly what it is you’re aiming to achieve with your site and who the key movers and shakers in your particular niche are. This can be done by searching through Google using your keywords and appending the term blog. This will then help you to identify those at the top who are generally considered an authority on the subject.

Once you’ve decided who the ideal people are to help drive your project, the next step is to reach out to them individually. Research them and their work, address them by name and make each email tailored to each user. No-one likes to feel part of an unsolicited marketing campaign, so ensure your community doesn’t become this, remember it’s about building a focussed community with a mission firmly in your mind.

Now that you’ve hopefully garnered some interest from your desired elite users and have enticed them to come over and join your site, what now? Well the key element is to engage them, give them something to do and a reason to do it. Goodfibres entire point of being is to be an interactive experience by voting, commenting and sharing designs. On-site we’ve made it as easy as possible to get involved by voting and commenting on art. Off-site we’re trying to spread out across the web as much as possible, harnessing the power of social media – particularly Facebook and Twitter – to communicate and interact with our community.

The key element in building the community is really giving users an open space to use, free from moderation (to an extent) where they can express themselves, discuss ideas and get feedback on the work they’re submitting. Once that you’ve started the foundations of your community, it’s integral that you listen to what they have to say, and respond accordingly; by not listening and blindly progressing with what you think to be best will only serve to alienate yourself from your community and ultimately lose them.

So this is how we’ve started off with the Goodfibres community and how we’re looking to progress with the perpetual production of our ethical t shirts model that serves to benefit charities, the designer and of course the wearer. Inspiration for tee shirt design could eventually from every day life — you see moustache and someone already made tee shirt about it, and so TV shows, famous quotes, politics and so on.

Our friend, Mr. Dave Young, even came up with tee shirt brand that inspired by his obsession with tea and his middle name, that’s why he created indie T-shirt brand called Edward Teabelly not along ago, on 1st Dec 2011.

The brands mixes together his passion for pop culture, fashion, movies and my addiction to the hot beverage, tea, among a multitude of other things, which helps Mr. Teabelly brings to life some fun and often strange concepts. It’s like Johnny Cupcakes without a cupcakes but tea.

Starting this year, I’d love to talk about my new interest, “tumblogging”. Yes it is super-fun. I first started about 2-3 years ago and but finally got myself addicted to it just when I started to get serious with Tee Shirts Daily in August 2011.

“Reblogging” and “Like-ing” photos on Tumblr is awesome time-waster and I think I had created T-shirt blog like no ever started before. Instead of talking about products and discounts by online store and clothing labels, my blog’s focal point is about the “moment” of individuals wearing their tee — and the story behind it as you guess by yourself.

When decided which style of shirt to get consider your budget, purpose for design and the end user of the shirt. This will ensure you have the best possible quality for the job you’re trying to do.

#2– Get Your Colours Right –

When designing artwork there are several things you need to consider. Some obvious ones include the size and style of the design, the message you’re trying to get across and even the colours you use. When deciding on your colour scheme, however, be sure you know which colour mode you should design in. Most computer software works by default with RGB and CMYK colour modes.

However, to ensure full accuracy of colours you will want to incorporate PMS colours. PMS stands for Pantone Matching System and is a system of matching colours for use in manufacturing and printing. It ensures the closest match to the colours you intended with your artwork. Ask your designer or t-shirt printers more about how this works if you’re unclear.

#3 – Design Artwork To Scale –

This is a very important tip when it comes to custom t-shirt printing. You never want to leave it up to the printer to adjust size for you later, especially if you’re not using vector-based graphics. Stretching an image degrades it’s quality and when that transfers to an actual print, the results can be horrendous.

What you should always do is design your artwork at the actual size you want it on the t-shirt. If you’re unsure of what size to create something, simply grab an old t-shirt and measure the length and width of the print area you intend on using. This will ensure that the final product turns out exactly as you envision it (or as close to it as possible).

#4 – Be Careful With Text –

On most custom designed t-shirts, text plays a huge part, especially with promotional products. Whether it’s a brand name, message, or anything in between, text is what can make your plain t-shirt humorous and creative, not to mention bring out the emotions of the person reading it.

But when designing text for a custom t-shirt printing job, the goal is often to design it in an innovative way. But if you use a custom font or one that is not stock with most graphics software, you run the risk of having It replaced with a more generic font during print. To make sure this doesn’t happen, try to convert any text layers in your artwork to actual images. This way the printer’s program interprets it as a solid image, rather than editable text. Alternatively, you can also convert any text to its outline. This will make the t-shirt printers software interpret the text as an image and not actual text.

#5 – Include A T-Shirt Mock-up –

Again, it’s important to have all your bases covered so your final product is exactly as you imagined it. Do not leave it up to a t-shirt printer to know where you want your design to be. Even if you say something as simple as “in the middle of the shirt,” it can mean different things to different people. To get around this it’s best to include a mock-up design in the files you hand over to your printer.
Simply take your design and overlay it on a picture of a plain t-shirt to give them an idea of where you want the artwork placed. This way there is no second-guessing and potential mistakes you have to worry about. Everything is visually right in front of the printer’s eyes. If they still mess up the placement, then it’s their fault altogether.

#6 – Choose Your Colours Wisely –

Nowadays, with computers at the forefront of design and printing, it may seem as if your options and possibilities are limitless. However, this is not always the case. And even if someone says it can be done, it may be that you do not want to have it done. For example, intricate designs with many different custom colour shades may not be the best choice for printing on t-shirts. It’s not that it cannot be done, it is simply a matter of final quality.

The colours may not transfer from the artwork to the actual print correctly. The shading may be different and in some cases completely wrong. Also if you choose to print dark colours on a dark t-shirt (brown ink on a black shirt, for example) it may not show up properly. So be sure to think through the type of colours you’ll be using.

#7 – Choose Your Printers Wisely –

The custom t-shirt printing business is quite large and has a lot of different players in it, regardless of the country you’re in. One of the biggest secrets to effective custom t-shirt design and printing is choosing the correct company. You want to be sure the company you are going with is of high quality and professional.

There are many companies that look great on the outside (website, etc.) but their products do not stand up well. Be sure to ask questions of your custom t-shirt printers and look for actual testimonials from previous customers. And make sure you know the type of products they are using on your project. You do not want to be stuck having an order of 1000 shirts from a company that uses inferior quality t-shirts and bad ink. And keep in mind that, oftentimes, you get what you pay for. So don’t be fooled by rock bottom pricing.

#8 – Keep It Simple –

This is probably one of the best tips that can be given when it comes to designing custom t-shirt printing projects. As someone designing a custom t-shirt it’s easy to let yourself get carried away and create very intricate and colourful works of art you’d like to transfer to a t-shirt or other garment. And because making very cool and complex designs on a computer screen is convenient and sometimes easy, it may seem like a no-brainer. The reality of the situation, however, is different. Most printers today use a process called screen printing to print designs on custom t-shirts.

The issue with screen printing and computer aided graphic design is that certain things look great on a computer, but cannot accurately be transferred to the printing process. That’s why it’s usually best to limit your use of colours and the intricacy of your design. You’ll get the best quality using a large image without lots of tiny lines and only one colour. The more you add, the more difficult it becomes to reproduce it at the same quality.

That’s all! Regardless of your level of skill in terms of the custom t-shirt printing process, the above tips can be used to make the process as smooth and pain free as possible. Take your time, keep it simple and know what you’re getting into and you’ll be happy with the results. And once you have your custom t-shirt design printed and ready to go, it will all have been worth it.

I found WearingSocial a couple of months ago and just recently someone told me another similar service called SocialWear. But what they do exactly? They’re very similar with print-on-demand services such as Cafepress, Zazzle or Spreadshirt with add-on service: getting photos from your social network i.e Facebook

In a very simple explanation: The service help you grab photos from your Facebook and let you “design” how it will look on T-shirt (with pre-defined template) and print it for you — all with couple of clicks online.

Dhanny a.ka. danot is an Indonesian-based graphic designer and illustrator with unique style on human and animals that goes fun-wild with his own fantasy. Last month, I interviewed the designer that has designed for Graniph and currently re-building its own tee shirt label. Here’s the summary

[Rangga]: First thing first, tell me about your daily activities? Is it all about drawing and drawing?

[danot]: I fill my day not only with drawings. I only draw when i got something in my mind that I want to express. But recently, I try to be more discipline to do a daily drawing to improve myself and my skill.

[R]: When did you draw for the first time and finally decide to focus on this field? What makes you believe that “this is what I want to do”?

[d]: When i was a kid, i really interested in drawing, and sometimes I get punished by my parent because I did my drawing in the wall. drawing is always be my favorite lesson in school. I took a graphic design as my major in college so that i can keep drawing, as well as learning another things that are related in design.

When I draw I feel happy, because for me there is no right or wrong in drawing. I’m free to express anything by drawing.

[R]: So, your work are mostly inspired by your childhood about your interest in human and animals. What is it about human and animals that inspire you the most and influence your artworks?

[d]: Since I was a little boy my parent often brought me an animals to be taken care of. So I did a lot of interaction with them and I become aware of other living things beside human, that should live in harmony with us. I hate that people think that they are the greatest living things so that they can easily abused animal. The only uniqueness that distinguishes human from animal is that human have an intelligence.

That’s why human is more civilized and superior than animals. With their intelligence and mind human can control and maintain the animal behavior.

[R]: Tell me about your collaboration with Graniph!

[d]: I think this collaboration with graniph is a little bit lucky, because at that time i was really interested in character and toys design. so I just try to submit what i drew and they approved it.

[R]: Haha, but when did you started your own T-shirt shop? Who are you working with to make it happen and how is it going so far?

[d]: I started in 2008 but it doesn’t went well, and in 2011 I try to rebuild it. Actually until now I don’t have a shop. I just sell them online.

Honestly is running slow right now because there a lot of things to manage and I work alone. I feel happy when people love and appreciate my design.

[R]: What else do you do other than drawing?

[d]: I do freelance for graphic design. I’m also running a shoes brand with my friends named “davu” shoes.

[R]: Awesome, I think I forget to ask you this: What else, beside animals, that inspire your artworks? Do you have favorite artists that (in any way) influence the way you draw?

[d]: Actually beside animals I have many influences and inspirations like childhood memories,
my life experience, and many artist, books, exhibition that i read and see.
Some of my favorite artist are Gary Baseman, Kozyndan, Andrew Rae, Agus Suwage, Eko Nugroho,
Dali, Frida Kahlo, Alex Gross, Nate Frizzell, Marion Peck and many more.

The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) by Steven Spielberg is a must-watch movie before you meet the end if this year. STUBBORN SIDEBURN is brain-child of Japanense artists, Junichi Tsuneoka, whose focal point is the distintive a style often recognized as “California Roll Stylie,” the result of both a visual and conceptual fusion of Japanese pop culture and American urban culture.

With intention to experiment and explore while giving his “characters” a purpose to live and creating a world for them, Mr Junichi Tsuneoka started STBN SDBN (short for STUBBORN SIDEBURN) just last year. I Love Antix, also often called simply “Antix”, is a brand that is dedicated and inspired by fun! The brand is self-described as a mix of 80s nostalgia and 90′s rad. However it’s also a brand that is Ultra-Hyper-Super-Mega-High-Fashion which of course, as they admit, doesn’t actually mean anything at all. I’m not saying this design it’s copycat and really, as you know, lion’s face taken from straight from the front has become a symbol of power covered  in gentle manner but can be dangerous (in a good and bad way). Many artists have taken it as inspiration for their artworks. And Seventh.Ink has done it just awesome with its 4TH ANNIVERSARY poster that comes together when you buy the tee for $50.

Too bad there are only 50 of these sets were made (tee shirts and posters). Good for us, each poster is hand numbered and signed by the artist with metallic silver ink. Who’s the artist? That’s my question too.

I believe that its Debut collection can give you some ideas of diversity in Carte Postale’s imagination.

Myself is having mixed feeling about this tee. As Boris is making a small, impressive details to the I’m the Music, I’m not very sure it will be exposed gracefully in this navy graphic tee. Design by Humans, one the rare on-going tee shirt design community I would compare the fame Threadless is rolling out some new feature together with the latest website revamp — but not all are new “things”. Accepting Paypal payment should be done long time ago, but the new-way of browsing tee shirt with “check list” button is brilliant although borrowing feature that already exist on some commerce website. Threadless has already adopted this quite some time. And so the reprint-request.

It’s nice to see that Design by Humans now now facilitating good cause for all DBH fans through section they call “Give Back”.  There’s another new section called Artist Interview — Jimiyo as the first artist to be interviewed? Oh, come on… Can I have a new kid on the block? Even Jimiyo calls it an “old interview” !

But what’s good for me as consumer is the $10 for 10 Days section — where there’s one tee sold for only $10 during 10 days until it’s sold out — and the $15 price for Shirt of The Day while tee shirts are normally priced $20.

BUt what’s missing is, where’s the affiliate section? Deleting it without the consent of affiliate members who already making a few bucks is definitely a bad idea. I’d like to hear some explanation from DBH about this.

Boomslank is all about Japanese anime pop culture printed on American Apparel T-shirt. It’s not only its tee shirts that contain full pack of anime… but also its website and the way its artist, P-shinobi, sees the world through anime.

Despite the passion for anime, Boomslank doesn’t want to be associated as a clothing brand that create and sell Naruto graphic T-shirt — if you know what I mean. And don’t you even dare to hire to them make a nice Manga because they’re not going to do it fo you.

Origami Ghost is the collaborative effort of Ricky Krieck and Colin Gilliam, two long-time friends who initially met when they attended first grade together. As fate would have it, twenty years later the events of their lives aligned in such a way that they were both ready for a new, creative project. That creative outlet turned out to be Origami Ghost.

Origami Ghost is a natural extension of Colin and Ricky’s passion for clothes and street culture. As such the brand features tees, hoodies, sweatshirt, hats, and more. The designs are infused with a healthy dose of Asian culture and popular iconography but are rendered through the lens of Colin and Ricky’s unique West Coast perspectives. As the name implies many of the designs also depict some kind of origami style image. Take for example the t-shirt named Crane or Lucky Cat.

These are great looking Origami style designs that feature popular Asian imagery. Another cool character is Charlie the Koi fish. Whether knocking back some Sake or just relaxing under an umbrella, Charlie looks like the original gangsta of good times. He gives a distinct style to any t-shirt or skateboard that he graces.

That’s just a small sampling of what Origami Ghost has to offer though. They’ve only been around for about a year and yet they’ve already cranked out some solid pieces. It’ll be exciting to see where Ricky and Colin’s creativity leads Origami Ghost next.

Since the angry guy — with his full of frustration and rage facial expressione found in Gantz’ Chapter 55: Naked King, originally released in February 2002 (English version, June 2009) — become internet meme, I always think that the tee version is a must.

I agree that NerdyShirts printed it in white clean tee shirt without the “Y U NO” so that we can add our own text to the shirts. Ha!

Well, apart from that, Popeye is actually a good gambler. Giving a chance to people to learn and discuss anatomy of a few most influential cities in the world while looking good is the new way of wearing T-shirts — I’m talking about Figure Ground tee shirts collection.

She is Lara Hanlon, 20 years old and currently studying Design in Visual Communication at IADT Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, Ireland. It’s sad though that Captain Canada doesn’t receive world attention as much as Captain Canada apart from the same patriotic duties with Captain America. In honour of the Canadian hero. A not-so-new perspective from web designer-turn-tee designer, Jake Mize, on how a clothing business should be run:

I had originally started out outsourcing the designs to a couple of illustrators, thinking that I would use their talents and following to help grow the brand and eventually bring exposure to artists that were maybe not so well known. But after getting my first shirt printed and people asking me if I actually designed it, got me thinking, is this the direction that I want to go? I wanted to have my hand in as much of everything as possible. So, I quickly scratched the idea of outsourcing all of my designs and started to actually create everything myself. Being a designer, this quickly became a very natural creative outlet to grow my talents further than just web design.

So, what do you think? It can be true indeed, but could the business grow without outsourcing its job or injected a huge capital? We’ll see later. Jake himself has been designing website for a while with some really cool portfolios.
