Surf Art Exhibit/Interview - Mayumi Tsubokura

November's monthly exhibit on COTW is with Japanese surf artist Mayumi Tsubokura, interspersed with photos from Myumi's personal archives tracking his encounters with many of surfing's icons/heroes, past and present...

His experiences span him being pulled from the water after wiping out by Rabbit Kekai and being personally coached by him the next day, hanging with Eddie Aikau, nursing injuries for Laird Hamilton, instigating the great surf documentary Riding Giants by introducing Darrick Doerner and Laird to one of the producers, being nicknamed by Gerry Lopez, meeting Frank Sinatra and even saving Miki Dora's life!!! His personal photo collection includes photos of a young Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Andy Irons, Taylor Knox and many more.

Those of you that follow the pro surfing scene may already be familiar with the latest COTW artist's work... South African surf artist Martin Bakker sculptured the recent "Floating Trophy" for the 2009 Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay, awarded to this years winner Joel Parkinson (as seen below). Martin's work focuses mainly on Jeffreys Bay... In Martin's words "...preserve the classic look of J-Bay that I fell in love with all those years ago". Legendary Surf Artist - Rick Griffin

COTW is especially proud to announce a new showcase of the late great; Rick Griffin's work... Rick Griffin (1944 - 1991) is widely known in the surfing world as one of the original surf artists. His iconic poster for John Severson's Pacific Vibrations (shown below) and his comic strip about a surfer named "Murphy" are perhaps his more famous works. He was particularly famous as being one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. COTW is grateful to Rick's son-in-law Tod (www.rickgriffinink.com), who represents the estate and all business dealings, who offered Rick's work to be displayed on COTW. Check it out...

Beach Fights!

I'd like to introduce a slightly controversial topic, but something I'm sure a lot of surfers everywhere can add to, but in this case it's more related to California and Hawaii (at least that's where the following stories originated from anyway...). Californian artist and lifelong surfer; Ron Croci, has written and illustrated a series of 14 short stories on the subject of 'beach fights'...

This feature started on Wednesday 9th September, and there will be a new story added everyday for 14 days, so check back each day for a new story...

COTW presents another in a string of artists/photographers added recently! This time it's New York based photographer Matt Schwartz. Matt has a unique approach to surf photography... His process is called Polaroid transfer. He takes pictures using a Polaroid camera, pulls apart the film and then rubs the negative onto watercolor paper. The result is a cross between a vintage photograph and a painting... with cool results, check it out...

"I paint the view as seen by a surfer floating on the line-up and waiting for the next wave. When painting a scene from the ocean vantage point I try to capture the feeling from the line-up, taking in the peace and beauty of the moment, and make it permanent. I feel that the surfer's view, looking back toward the shore, on the edge between land and ocean, is a unique perspective. In my paintings I aim to recreate the feeling of distance from the shore (from everyday life?) and the dance of sky and shore reflections on the water which is always changing with the infinity of ocean moods."
