Loneliness

Loneliness is a common and very subjective human experience. Most people will be faced with it at some point in their lives. Experiencing loneliness over a long period of time can be hard to bear and tolerate, particularly when one's resources, skills and confidence are minimal. The chronicity of this experience can be further isolating and make one feel helpless.

Loneliness can be experienced in different ways. On the one hand it is lacking social connections with others and on the other hand one can feel lonely in an intimate relationship, a close friendship or even being part of a large family

People avoid feeling lonely and create ways to comfort themselves.
Some examples of these are keeping busy, using substances, avoiding social events or people or simply withdrawing.

What gets in the way of feeling connected and experiencing connection with others?

Needs are not met by past and current relationships
Sometimes a known or even unknown yearning for something/someone
Low self-esteem and self consciousness
Afraid of being seen for who you genuinely are
Depression/Anxiety
Trauma/Past abuse

Handling your children's anger

Anger in children is a normal emotional reaction to frustration, disappointment, or being treated unjustly. Anger can be a useful emotion as it motivates them to solve issues, make positive changes and achieve their goals. For younger children, anger is often expressed in form of tantrums or other aggressive behaviours. However, as they get older and their cognitive & language skills develop, most children learn to express and manage their anger in a more effective way.

Unfortunately, when a child frequently lose control of their anger, unpleasant consequences may occur for the child (e.g., being rejected by friends), and for his or her loved ones. The child’s healthy functioning may therefore be jeopardised by his/her inability to control negative emotions.

As parents, it is important to help your children to understand their anger and learn helpful strategies to manage and express their anger. Seeking professional help in anger management can also provide you with additional support. In counselling, your children can recognise what anger looks like, what triggers their anger, learn how thoughts influence behaviour, learn every-day and practical strategies to deal with behaviour and thoughts, learn how to communicate their feelings without acting aggressively, and learn relaxation strategies.

Depression

“Depression is more than just a low mood - it's a serious illness. While we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time and often without reason. People with depression find it hard to function every day and may be reluctant to participate in activities they once enjoyed. Depression causes both physical and psychological symptoms. Depression is one of the most common of all mental health problems. One in five people experience depression at some stage of their lives."(http://www.beyondblue.org.au. )

Life can be tough and we all face different challenges from time to time which can cause us to feel depressed. The loss of a spouse, child or loved one, the loss of a job or loss of good health can leave us feeling depressed and often without hope. Even Christians can suffer from depression. People suffering from depression often have feelings of anxiety as well. Some of the symptoms of depression can include feeling sad/down or miserable most of the time; loss/gain of weight associated with decrease/increase in appetite; sleep disturbance (sleeping too little or too much); withdrawing from family & friends; loss of concentration; over reliance on alcohol & sedatives; irritability; lack of confidence & self esteem; feelings of guilt or suicidal thoughts. If you experience any of these symptoms for a prolonged period, it’s important that you speak to your doctor or health professional.

Depression is treatable and the road to recovery may involve being prescribed anti-depressant medication and speaking to a counsellor or psychologist. Don’t suffer alone. Help is available.

Habits Gone Wrong

"I have developed a certain type of habit/almost ritual-like behaviour over the years. Each time before I go out of the house, I have to check 5 times that I definitely have 4 things on me; wallet, phone, keys, and tissue. I have to check 3 times that I have turned off the lights, turned off the gas, and closed all windows. I will never use public toilets due to the fear of germs. If I ever touched something that I thought may potentially be infected with germs, I'll have to wash my hands at least 3 times to feel better. At work, I am very particular with details and have to check my work at least 5 times before I'm satisfied with it. These habits not only affected my daily functioning, it has also affected my ability to work effectively. My friends and family have also started noticing my habits, with a few expressing concerns, while others just felt somewhat irritated. Is there something wrong with me?"

The behaviours described are consistent with a diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is characterised by the preoccupation with intrusive thoughts such as "If I use a public bathroom, I may be infected with germs." These unwelcomed, intrusive and often exaggerated thoughts can understandably cause great distress, anxiety, and even fear. In order to calm yourself, you may experience what is referred to as a 'compulsion', an urge to engage in repetitive habits. These can include, as mentioned, checking things over and over, repetitive washing of your hands and checking your work 5 times. Unfortunately, these behaviours do assist with alleviating the associated negative feelings, which in turn reinforces their use again in the future when these thoughts occur. It quickly becomes a vicious cycle and these habits are strengthened with every use. This can then lead to the development of other habits. These stubborn habits often interfere with your social interactions, work/study abilities and well-being, and if so, it becomes a real problem.

The good news is that you can do something about it. It requires strong motivation and desire to untrain the stubborn habits, and it may be quite an uncomfortable experience at times. It is important, therefore, to seek professional support and guidance to help resisting the habits more effectively. You may wish to check with your doctor regarding a possible diagnosis of OCD and a possible treatment plan. Fortunately, there are plenty of people who have successfully worked through their symptoms and learned adaptive ways of managing their anxiety. In doing so, they have improved their quality of life - you can too.

Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety (also called angst or worry) is a psychological and physiological state characterized by somatic, emotional, cognitive, and behavioural components. It is the displeasing feeling of fear and concern in either the presence or absence of psychological stress. Anxiety can create feelings of fear, worry, uneasiness, and dread. It is also associated with feelings of restlessness, fatigue, concentration problems, and muscle tension. Anxiety is considered to be a normal reaction to a stressful situation where a person may feel under pressure such as when attending a job interview, meeting a work deadline or sitting for an exam or test.

However, for some people these feelings are ongoing, happen for no apparent reason or continue after the stressful event has passed. While everyone feels anxious from time to time, some people experience these feelings so often and/or so strongly that it can affect their everyday lives. When anxiety becomes overwhelming, it may fall under the classification of an anxiety disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2008) .

If you’re experiencing ongoing anxiety symptoms it’s important that you speak to your doctor who may refer you to a psychiatrist or psychologist for an assessment. A psychiatrist is able to prescribe medication to help alleviate the symptoms of anxiety. A psychologist or counsellor can assist with learning techniques to help you better manage your anxiety. Which self are you today?

Many of us put on many different hats (i.e. roles), for example, “the responsible employee”, “the caring friend”, “the creative art lover”, “the strong corporate leader”, “the attractive middle-aged woman”. There is probably an infinite combination of roles people play. In this postmodern age, we can reinvent ourselves as often as we want. And it’s not always a bad thing! Sometimes, it is just fun!! In fact, you might have thought of some of these different labels of yourself. The different circumstances or groups we are surrounded by do, to a certain extent, dictate how we need to or choose to behave. Besides, who wants to be a social outcast? Although that can be another label someone could proudly wear!

Have you thought about the different selves you portray/strive to become? Do you become confused at times about who you really are? Do you identify really strongly with all the selves you put on? Do any of those labels feel inauthentic and you feel like a fake sometimes? Are some of the labels instrumental or just a culture you adopt in order to feel accepted?

Why not take some time to explore and learn to manage your best asset—you? After all, you have to live with yourself all the time, so it might just be worth it to work on areas of your identity and to appreciate or fine-tune the unique person you are!

Addictions

“An addiction is something that controls people – something they feel they cannot do without or something they do to alleviate pain or pressure.” Joyce Meyer – Approval Addiction (2005). People can be addicted to either a substance (alcohol, drugs, food) or behaviour (gambling, watching pornography, shopping or work). When people are insecure (which is most people), they look to others to make them feel better about themselves or approve of them. This behaviour can become an addiction – an approval addiction.

Often I meet with clients who find it difficult to feel good about themselves unless they receive positive affirmation from others – their parents, husband/wife, friends or colleagues. The reality is that not everyone will approve of us at all times. They may even reject us. The thought of being rejected is so frightening that some people will do almost anything to avoid it even if it means going against their own morals. They become ‘people pleasers’ caught in a vicious cycle and often cannot stop without appropriate intervention.

Overcoming any addiction is difficult to do on your own. Admitting your problem is the first step to freedom. Speaking to someone you can trust such as a pastor, counsellor, or someone struggling with a similar problem are all positive steps that you can take. Twelve-step support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Gamblers Anonymous are also beneficial as you hear how others have overcome their addictions.

Numbering Your Days

As we embark on a new year, you might have given yourself time out to reflect on the year gone past and wonder what might be in store for you in 2013. I wonder if you take the time to “number your days” or map out the possibly remaining years of your life, and what you would like to achieve in your lifetime.

Sounds depressing? Or is it a way to plan and live wisely? That depends on whether you believe there is a certain “best age to be” and anything beyond is a downhill ride… or every period of life can be the best time in some way.

One way of estimating how much time you have left, is by using the “Death Clock”, see: http://www.deathclock.com/. I am not endorsing its accuracy, but it is a somewhat morbid/amusing way to remind us that our time in this life is limited.

Knowing that life is limited, how should we then live?

Purposefully: To live without purpose is to simply exist. Life is short and living a purposeless life makes you a waste of space and resources. You are selling yourself short, if you just go through the motions and not pause to think about what you truly want to achieve and to go for it.

Passionately: Similarly, living without passion makes our life a means to an end. Enjoy the journey and live deliberately. Love with all your heart and live up to your values.

Wisely: Living wisely is about being strategic in what you do and how you do it. It is an art of life to ensure you live to the fullest and make the most of opportunities that come your way.

New Beginnings

The end of a year can bring with it a mixture of feelings. For some, it may be great relief. After a year of pain and hardship they look forward with anticipation to a more positive year with some ‘lucky breaks’. For some, perhaps the thought of going through another year of ‘more of the same’ creates a sense of despair and hopelessness. For others, a new year is as an opportunity to make a fresh start and improve their health and relationships.

New Year’s Resolutions often motivate people to attain their goals. But so often, well meaning people who really want to make positive changes give up when the going gets tough and soon fall back into their old ways. The New Year can bring with it the hope of new beginnings. You may need a fresh start in your life. Perhaps you’re unhappy in your job but can’t see a way out. Is your marriage at breaking point and all you can think of is leaving? You’ve promised yourself many times that you will lose weight and keep it off but to no avail.

Make 2013 a year of new beginnings. Let go of what lies behind and press forward to what lies ahead.

Climbing Your Tree

Most of us have experienced our happiest and most meaningful times with our family. However, many have also experienced their angriest, saddest, and sometime most hurtful times with them too. We have all thought about our own family of origin and wondered how they have affected us.

Perhaps you have a parent or grandparent whom you admire greatly and seek to emulate. Perhaps some of your family traits are so embarrassing that you choose to eliminate them from your own life!

When you are dating or in a serious relationship with someone, it doesn’t usually take very long before you become aware of their family-of-origin “baggage”. Things are just a lot easier when family members are respectful and accepting, but that is not always the case. Some relationships are in crisis due to a person’s family history/issues or just very difficult relatives. When one marries, they are not only marrying the person, but also the person’s family!

If you ever wondered if behavioural, cognitive or emotional patterns in your family are contributing factors to your distress, come in and have a chat with one of our counsellors. You might discover more about yourself and your family of origin, and discover a little more about who you have become today. Introducing New Volunteer: Yi Ling Loh

Yi Ling Loh is a new member of our Counsel@CrossCulture team. She actually joined our team a couple of months ago, but has been away throughout November and is just ‘back on deck.’ She is a volunteer and will be helping out with tasks such as reception work and cleaning.

Yi Ling grew up in Taiwan and Singapore and came to Melbourne as an
international student. She graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. Yi Ling has worked at a dog blood bank and as a supervisor at a residential college. She has lived in Melbourne for eight years.

Yi Ling has been attending CrossCulture Church of Christ since her arrival in Australia and is currently serving in the Alpha ministry. During her free time, Yi Ling likes to read and visit art galleries.

Yi Ling has always been passionate about doing volunteer work as a way of
contributing back to society. She was involved in fundraising for The Cancer Council and The Starlight Children’s Foundation. She is volunteering at the counselling centre because she wants to find out more about Christian counselling. She is considering studying a Christian counselling course since she is interested in helping people to live life to the fullest.

Being attuned to, is important when attending therapy/counselling.
To be empathised in a meaningful way, is required both in qualitative and quantitative ways, assisting in the recovery toward emotional, psychological and physiological wellbeing.

The purpose of the attuned therapeutic relationship assists in the laying down of new neurological connections to the brain. This process supports you to connect inner thoughts to emotions and help make sense of your experiences that support meaningful change.

The development of an interpersonal exchange is established in the relationship over time, resulting from the safety and security experienced with and toward the therapist. The therapist stays attuned to your moment by moment experience in the “here and now”, an invaluable interaction for personal transformation.

Of course this can create a certain amount of anxiety and/or joy. It can leave positive or challenging experiences in the therapeutic relationship in that moment. These experiences provide you with a learning opportunity to re-engage and become involved in the repairing of these difficulties with “another person”, in this instance the therapist, after a disturbance or a shift has occurred in the exchange.

The security gained in the relationship will help you regulate difficulties experienced in communication. It will also support you to gain a higher capacity to tolerate emotional distress and move forward in empowering and energized ways.

New and positive experiences are always being created, assisting you with the internal and inter-personal changes you’ve hoped for. Therapy therefore becomes the learning ground of recognising and experiencing your strength to safely express, powerful and overwhelming emotions and thoughts that you may not have been able to do so in the past.

Cultural Confusion

“What is my cultural identity?” “Do I need to identify strongly with only one ethnic group in order to be normal?” “Why do others keep expecting me to act in a certain way, just because of how I look?” “What does it mean to be Australian?” “It seems like I just don’t fit in anywhere!!!”

Living in a multicultural and diverse metropolitan like Melbourne gives us the benefit of learning from countless of different ethnic/cultural groups, and the freedom of expressing ourselves in very unique ways without too many social expectations. Circa 40% of the population in Melbourne was born overseas. Many of us are able to find others whom we are able to connect and feel at home with. Some of us break out of the conventions we were taught by our families, in order to be the person we really want to be or believe we were supposed to be. Most of us pick and choose what to keep or shed from our upbringing, and what to adopt or not adopt from others.

All well and good, unless you are feeling a little confused about who you are and how you should be acting. Seeing that most of us find it difficult to tolerate ambiguity, we all find ourselves a little perplexed about our identity from time to time, as identity and culture seem so fluid and ever-changing. At times, this confusion of self can lead to great distress and debilitation.

Struggling to get over the breakdown of a long-term relationship?

Anyone who gets married or enters a relationship does so with the hope of living ‘happily ever after’. Unfortunately however, in Australia up to 50% of marriages end in divorce. Whether you’ve been married or in a relationship that hasn’t worked out, it can be difficult to move on and forget about the past. The breakdown of a relationship can be very painful; especially when you have invested so much of yourself into what you thought was forever. You may feel like you can’t live without your partner and feel depressed and lonely. Perhaps you’re struggling with identity issues as previously you were part of a couple and now you’re single.

What is Counselling?

Well some may think that counselling is about going to visit a wise person, who after asking some apt questions, provides wisdom to the areas of our life that needs it. Some think it is a waste of time, some think it should be free!!

One way to describe counselling is like this: it is a journey from the pain in ones life, a journey to understand the how, when where and why of the issues. In identifying the source of the problem, then formulating strategies to overcome the issues, a struggling soul can be empowered. After all, if you are not AWARE of what the issue is, where it comes from, or why it exists, then you are not likely to ACKNOWLEDGE the problem or own it as yours (ACCEPTANCE). Once a person accepts the responsibility for dealing with the issue, momentum can begin by being either ASSERTIVE over the negative behaviours or negative impact of the issue, or one can AFFIRM themselves as not being all bad, there are some very good parts that have enabled you to get somewhere in life.

Most importantly, when the strategies have been established and implemented, the last step is to APPRECIATE the change, no matter how little it may seem. Most important is the willingness to sit with a stranger and to slowly open up, become vulnerable despite all the insecurities and fears. Remember this, if you are not sure who to seek out as a counsellor you can seek out where others may have been; ask your Pastor or minister for advice; or contact the following websites and see who may be registered and practising in your area.

Strategies for Life Improvement

Researchers have been having a chicken-and-egg debate over thoughts, emotions, and behaviour for decades now, with little or no resolution. Some of them claim that it is without a doubt that by modifying our thoughts and behaviour, we alter how we feel; others claim that emotions are definitely more primal, and therefore working with emotions would lead to change in one’s thoughts/behaviour... you get my drift.

My suggestion is, learn different strategies, so we become skilled at discerning which strategy would work best when you find yourself in a certain situation. In some situations, adjusting how you think about them would bring about a change of attitude and emotions quite instantaneously. However, when you feel overwhelmed by your emotions and need a little “recalibration”, you could take some time out to evaluate and process your emotions in a safe place before you get back into the swing of things. There are still other situations which would best require a transformation of behaviour and forming of new habits, or even a total change of environment or restructure of your life in order for you to get the best out of life. At times, we would need to adjust more than one of those variables, so that we get a more effective and sustainable result.

Introducing New Volunteer: Angela Utomo

Angela Utomo is another new member of our Counsel@CrossCulture team. Angela is a volunteer who will pick up some general tasks at the centre like reception work, cleaning and preparing materials for upcoming events.

Angela is originally from Indonesia, the eldest of four siblings and with parents actively involved in Christian ministry. She has lived in Melbourne for the past four years. For most of that time she has been a part of CrossCulture Church and serving regularly with Mercy Ministries. Last year Angela graduated from a Masters of Applied Psychology (Community) at Victoria University and this year is working as a University tutor and Casual Relief Lecturer for Psychology and Social Work students.

In addition to her volunteer work at Counsel@CrossCulture, Angela also volunteers at a Helpline for people who care for loved ones with a mental illness. Angela is keen to learn about Christian approaches to counselling and psychological interventions which is one of the reasons why she is offering her time to Counsel@CrossCulture.

Angela’s research and work interests include supporting refugees and asylum seekers, young people’s mental health and prevention of sexual violence. In her spare time she enjoys dark chocolate, fine dining and organising events – a great set of skills for our growing counselling ministry!

If visiting the Counselling Centre on Wednesdays, you will likely find Angela at the front desk.

Introducing New Counsellor: Andrea Blake

Andrea Blake is a qualified counsellor, who is very excited to be joining the Counsel@CrossCulture team.

Andrea specialises in counselling and debriefing people who have spent time living overseas in work with Aid agencies, Corporations or Christian Organisations. Andrea has an understanding of the issues cultural adjustment and re-adjustment can have on adults, teens and children. She loves to journey with people as they process and make sense of ‘reverse culture shock’, trauma, re-adjustment; grief associated with loss of leaving and faith concerns.

Andrea is married, and has three children and enjoys exploring Melbourne and Victoria with her family, discovering good coffee and bike riding.

She has lived overseas in Europe, North Africa and in the Pacific Islands. Andrea struggled with her own journey of transition back to Australia and sees the importance of receiving support in this time.

Andrea has supported cross-cultural and International Aid workers for several years, both here in Australia and overseas. She runs extensive debriefs and offers ongoing support with counselling throughout the readjustment period.

Andrea has completed a BA in Psychology and Psychophysiology, and post -graduate Studies in Counselling. She is a member of the CCAA (Grad) and is PACFA registered (provisional).

Andrea is happy to work with people of all ages. She has experience counselling in primary and secondary schools. She has worked with adults, children and teens on a variety of issues, such as anxiety, depression, grief and trauma, self esteem and self harm. When working with children, Andrea utilizes play and art therapy techniques.

Do You Know Yourself?

As you go on day to day, from one year to another, what is it that you are working towards? Is what you’re doing taking you closer to where you want to be, or is it taking you further and further? Look at your superiors (boss, parents, pastor, mentor, etc.), and think of whether you would want to be like them someday, or do you get excited envisioning yourself as somebody else? Some of you may have wonderful leaders in your life whom you aspire to, but some of you do not. If you hate the job of your manager, but are working towards that position yourself, chances are, you are probably not heading in the direction you want.

Many people expend most of their energy into serving the demands of family, community and society, and never take the time to ponder on the unique person they are, and what their unique purpose in life is. Perhaps, because these questions often do not give us straightforward answers is why we shy away from them. However, do the questions actually tell us more than simple answers could? Are we working so hard to please the (sometimes unspoken) expectations of our family, community & society that we are feeling listless and sometimes wonder what the meaning of life is?

Of course, having a sense of belonging is an important motivator in our lives. We all want to be part of community, and that desire is not a bad one. But, have you pretended to like something just because everyone in the group likes that? Are you in a job or studying a degree that you would have never picked for yourself, outside the influence of friends, family or society? Are you doing something just because it seems like the “Australian” (or Asian or Hispanic, etc.) thing to do?

Sometimes, it is our responsibilities (children, house, etc.) which have got us to pursue a career path we are not the least excited about. And since we’ve been stuck in it for such a long time, is it realistic to think we could ever get out of the rut? “I’ve got bills to pay and mouths to feed, you know!”

Yet, you do owe it to yourself, and to those around you, to get to know yourself, so you can live authentically and passionately. Knowing yourself does not always mean throwing away your career, family & community, but it does mean thinking of things in a different way and perhaps, doing things in a different way. Work out what you are passionate about and gifted in, and you could approach your current job with a whole different angle. If serving others is a passion of yours, think of your work as you contributing to others’ lives or to the order of things, and fuel your passion for work with the thoughts and attitudes that align better with your philosophy of life. That would affect greatly how you treat others and improve your sense of satisfaction from what you are doing.

For those of you who do not yet have a whole lot of responsibilities, rethinking your life and making the choices towards getting where you truly want to get is something you would want to consider. You are unique, and only you can fill the role that you are supposed to fill. If you do not, others who need you are missing out on that! Do yourself and others a favour and get to know yourself today.

Take Action Over Stress

In more than a quarter of a century of advising management and boards, I don’t believe I have ever seen the levels of stress among employees higher than it is today.

It’s a confluence of events that has its origin in the global financial crisis that, inexorably, has rippled to every corner of business and commerce in the Western world.

Company leaders themselves are under pressure to manage costs (read, reduce costs) and, by whatever it takes, to maintain cost-income ratios.

This pressure, exerted from above, pushes down relentlessly on workforces and many Individuals struggle to cope.

One of my clients recently explained she was responsible for four functions, she had 17 direct reports and no time to manage, let alone to lead …

The impact of stress on staff is demonstrable and manifests itself in a number of ways. One option for leaders is to ignore the stress their people are under and put up with the consequences, one of which is unintended staff turnover of perhaps as much as 40 per cent a year. Another, better, option is to sharpen their focus in actively engaging stressed team members.

Sadly, many leaders have little idea how to engage a valued, yet stressed, employee more deeply. Some things leaders may need to consider include: Scheduling agenda-free meetings with their people. Yes, I’m serious – agenda free. Pay attention and listen. You may be surprised at what you learn. Show interest in the person, as well as in the business. Accept there are times to seek professional help in whatever form that may take. In my experience, the new leaders need to increase their focus on high-value team members, offer both emotional and practical support to help them cope and be prepared to seek independent assistance in keeping their leaders accountable for these softer yet critical issues.

Do you dislike your current job but not sure what else to do?

Gone are the days when people stayed in the same job until they retired. In fact, the average person can expect to change jobs 5-7 times in their life. People can dislike their job for a variety of reasons – sometimes related directly to the job or sometimes for personal reasons. A young lady studied hard to pursue a career in the banking industry. She works for a reputable finance company and has a reasonable salary but is very dissatisfied with her job. She comes for counselling and explains that she cannot work for an organisation who is concerned more about profits than people. She decides to use her skills and her passion to help people to pursue study in a different field of work and is looking forward to a more satisfying career.

The Role of Emotions

Maybe you think of yourself as a “rational” person. Society tells us that we should not be “emotional”, especially if you are a boy or a man. But is that even possible? And is that actually wise?

Emotions are signals our body or inner self give to us when we are in certain environments. It is how people dynamically interpret and construct their experience in the present moment when they encounter their environment. Emotions direct how people relate to their world and inform them of their needs and fears. They are the link between the inner and outer realities of a person. Emotion is also viewed as experiential because when it is expressed, it draws certain responses from others. Think of how children relate to their parents. When parents are physically present, and yet emotionally distant, the children feel distressed and disconnected to them.

Many highly functional people I meet have managed to ignore their emotions in order not to be too easily influenced by them. I agree that our emotions need to be managed somehow and that we cannot just do whatever we feel like doing. However, in blocking out or refusing to listen to the signals our body is giving us, we might be missing out on some vital messages telling us what we really need and what is actually going on.

We all know of people who do not admit or deal with their anger towards someone else. They are often hostile, touchy and impatient! Emotions are tricky things. When people ignore them, they do not really go away, and you see those emotions as clear as day in their everyday interactions. Sometimes, that person is just totally oblivious to it! Other times, people wonder why they are reacting so strongly towards certain situations. Some people admit to having “unhealthy emotions” that disrupt their lives, and wish they could get rid of them.

When we refuse to get in touch with our feelings, we are not able to distinguish the different levels and types of emotions we experience. We are not able to work through past hurtful experiences and learn not to lose ourselves to bitterness. We are not able to bond with our loved ones in a way we would love to. We are not able to experience or appreciate the pains and joys of lives. We are not able to be fully honest with ourselves and those we love.

Dealing with Anxiety Problems? Get into Action. Don’t Wait!

All of us experience stress and feel anxious from time to time. For example, feeling anxious about an exam that is coming up soon, a job interview, or even a wedding! A little of this anxious feeling is a normal part of everyone’s life, and in fact, sometimes, even helpful to us.

According to Dr. Neil Rector, Head for the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health’s Anxiety Disorders Clinic in Toronto, “It is necessary in humans for survival and adaptation, and it is not in the least harmful or dangerous. Anxiety is typically short-lived, and in some cases moderate levels of anxiety actually enhance performance”. It becomes a problem, however, if the anxiety level reaches an extent where it interferes with your day-to-day life, that is, you feel overwhelmed by it, your health is affected, you are not able to interact with others as well as you used to be, and it is disrupting your ability to work/study. This is even more so if it has been going on for weeks, months or even longer, and it is highly important to do something about it.

Several things that you can do:

• Stay healthy

o Eat healthily – have a balanced diet and eat regularly

o Sleep healthily – have a regular sleep schedule and get enough sleep.

o Exercise – at least 30 minutes on most days is good for you, but do not do it excessively or too late in the day (i.e., exercise no later than 3 – 4 hours before you sleep).

o Avoid alcohol - It may seem to help, but it is short-lived, and in actual fact, it worsens the situation, and makes it even harder for you to get better.

• Relax—There are many ways to help you relax. A few suggestions include:

o Taking a walk

o Listening to music

o Having a hot shower/bubble bath

o Watching a comedy

· Talk to someone

o It helps to relieve your feelings when you talk about the things that make you anxious with a friend or family member. They may have encountered similar situations with you and can help/support you go through it.

• Seek professional help

o Lifeline (131114) – 24/7 telephone counselling services.

o Your local General Practitioner (doctor) – he/she can help identify your struggles and find the best ways for you to manage it.
