Residents can find good food in Cordova near Country Squire East by just walking or driving within three and a half miles. Some of the best Italian restaurants in the area are located on Germantown Parkway and South Germantown Road. You should check them out the next time you get a craving for excellent Italian cuisine:Villa Castrioti Italian Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily, Monday through Saturday. They also have a lively bar area that hosts live music groups and DJs on Wednesday and Saturday nights. Their lunch menu includes soups, salads, pasta, and entrees, while their more extensive dinner menu includes pizza, veal, and seafood as well.

Elfo’s Northern Italian Cuisine is also open Monday through Saturday, though they are only available for dinner unless you have a private luncheon party booked with them. They have daily happy hour specials starting when they open. Their menu is as extensive as that found at Villa Castrioti and includes appetizers, pizza, salad, seafood, chicken, pasta, steak, and veal. They are owned and operated by a family that has been in business in the area for nearly 100 years, in some form or other.

Have you ever eaten at either of these restaurants, Country Squire? If so, give us your review below!

New York City apartments tend to run small and people sometimes have no other choice than stuff it all up with everything they need to live in it. That’s not the case with Bettina Prentice, founder and owner of Prentice Art Communications. She recently relocated to a spacious 1,800 square-foot apartment which she shares with her husband. The apartment was featured in APT with LSD in vogue.com and the couple decorated it with a pretty relaxed atmosphere and lively colors. Enjoy!.

I recently read that one of the latest amenities in the hot New York City real estate market is to provide buildings with common libraries. Many of the exclusive buildings offering this kind of convenience to their future buyers have in their shelves only Architecture and Design related books and usually from luxury Publishing houses as Assouline. I can understand why this would be a catch for buyers especially those looking for a luxury lifestyle living. A library feels old school and cozy and there’s always a welcoming feeling. I don’t think there is anything else other than a library, or simple bookcases with books, that can make a house instantly feel a home. Enjoy!

International Boutique Hotel #29: The House Hotel in Istanbul

One thing that inspires me the most is Architecture, especially seeing how different countries interpret it while injecting their own personalities. I think that is extremely smart and I’m so happy that that’s being the case. The House Hotel in the hip Beyoğlu area of Istanbul was renovated in 2010 and Autoban, the firm responsible, preserved the 1890′s building by keeping its structure as untouched as possible and also maintaining its beautiful parquet floors, hexagon coffered ceilings, boiseries, and Mosaic.

Part of the ceiling of this hotel is a hexagon coffered ceiling which is repeated on some areas of the floors. Please note how the small sconces have the room numbers on them which then reflect on the walls. How cool!

If it weren’t for the glass table the size of this room would be perfect for kids to play around. The beam ceiling is loudly calling my name.

The white curvy side table works as a space for the eye to rest from the rectilinear of the elaborate boiseries and headboard. Love the scale of the lamp and the simple detail of the brassy dove on the wall.

The TV of course had to be white. If I live in Istanbul one day, cross your fingers, I’ll be knocking the doors of Autoban.

Love, love the excess of molding and the appliques used to make the boiseries. Everything is about continuity in this hallway.

In the bathrooms hexagon shaped mirror again mirrors the ceiling. The two leg sink, by the way, deserves a post of its own.

In both images above we can see clearly how beautiful architecture does not need much to reign. Someone said that a good room should be able to look beautiful naked. I agree!

Apparently the hotel has a “butler” style service but I would much rather be at the roof top enjoying a delicious Turkish breakfast overlooking The Galata tower.

Divine vignette in the living room, with Damien Hirst spots.

Lately I’ve been drawn to more neutral interiors. Interiors where warm-beige-painted paneling walls work as a backdrop to a combination of soft and textural furniture. L’Wren and Mick Jagger’s home in Paris, featured in Vogue May issue, is the total opposite of what you would expect from a Rock-Star home: with beautiful paneling, walls painted in beautiful light tones that go from lilac to beige, herringbone floors all throughout the apartment, antique rugs, and the perfect balance between wood and fabric. The final result is a jaw dropping home. What I love most is how updated the apartment looks by keeping the paneling walls in light tones. Enjoy!

Today I have the great pleasure of introduce you to Vyna St. Phard the mind behind High End Weekly, a blog dedicated to the highest standards of luxury lifestyle. Vyna is a New York-based interior designer who draws her inspiration from culture, fashion, art, travel and nature. Her aesthetic style is greatly influenced by the Art Deco style and Bauhaus movement. Her daily posts cover everything from, of course, Art Deco, the luxury market, and lifestyle blogging. Raised between Paris and New York she speaks perfect French and what I love more about Vyna is her bonne vivante personality and how easy going she is. I asked Vyna to contribute to Belle Vivir and share with my lovely readers some of her extended knowledge. Thank you Vyna for accepting.

*********************************

When my friend and fellow designer Julie asked me to do a blog post on Belle Vivir, I was thrilled to accept and be part of all the excitements and inspirations she create every day on this blog. I hope you too get inspired by these beautiful georgian houses because they have long been cherished, and stand as exemplary homes of long ago and a perfect standard for progressive architecture of the future.

It’s all in the details

Here’s a quick rundown of the history of Georgian Houses. They were built in a style that was popular in England from roughly 1715 to 1830, during the reigns of the four King George. The Georgian style homes are noteworthy for their distinctive appearances and for the influence they still have on modern building styles which is why I’m especially fond of them.

A square, symmetrical layout.

A row of horizontal, evenly spaced sash windows on each floor of the home.

Early Georgian homes had sash windows. The principal of the double-hung sash, with pulleys and counterweights in sash-boxes, remained unchanged, even in modern times. The same goes for the arrangements of internal folding shutters.

The average Georgian house had 2 to 3 stories, with a chimney on each end of the house.

The traditional number of windows is five on the upper floors, often with a Palladian window in the center over the door.

The above pictured doors are early examples of Georgian designs from William Salmon’s Palladio Londiniensis of 1734. It has a sober Doric doorcase and an enriched Corinthian doorcase.

Tory Burch’s South Hampton home via Vogue

Georgian houses are known for their large paneled door, usually topped off with a pediment or arch. The doorway is also often framed by pedestals or columns.

Georgian doors are tall, often filling the entire opening, but have often been cut down later to accommodate a fanlight. Front doors were painted in dark colors or grained to imitate wood.

Fashionable homes have a main staircase and a secondary “backstairs” for servants.

Ordinary homes have one wooden staircase of straight flights joined by landings, or winding flight for each story.

You will most likely find the most elaborate decoration on the main flight from the entrance hall to the floor above.

In late Georgian homes, staircases were made of wood, and were now open-string, with a stepped profile rather than a straight one.

A couple of years back, I toured a few Georgian houses, while my girlfriends and I were in the UK. This was way before I met my husband Michael, who happens to be British. Michael later told me that as a young man, he rented an apartment which was in a Georgian house. How delightful it must have been to live in such a stately house, I thought! These types of homes evoke lighthearted emotions, and I sometimes image Virginia Woolf slowly walking through such house, as she meditated on the characters for her novels. By the way, did she ever live in a Georgian house? As for me, I can easily imagine renovating one, and decorating it in a modern style. Perhaps I will forgo the renovation and live well enough alone (provided that the plumbing is working, of course). Even though I consider myself a modernist, I have a soft spot for Georgian houses, because they hold this timeless appeal, and boast an elegance which is hard to find in modern architecture.

If music moves you, the rhythm is gonna get ya (sorry for the Gloria Estefan reference but I couldn’t help it) on April 28th and 29th at Bristerfest, a street music festival taking place at the Levitt Shell in Memphis.

For those who aren’t familiar with the festival, it is an annual event that strives to give recognition to local musicians while situated at the famous place where artists like Elvis Presley (his first public performance ever!), the Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead and Johnny Cash once performed.

A portion of ticket sales will go to benefit GrowMemphis – a non-profit that works on developing new urban gardens. As for who will be there, you can enjoy the music of over 30 bands, including Ghost Town Blues Band, FreeWorld, Sound Mind, Agori Tribe and many more. Check out the video below for an explanation of the mission of the festival:

Coming soon to the Agricenter: It’s the Memphis Flea Market! Also known as “The Big One,” this is a great opportunity for you Country Squire East residents to venture into Memphis for a day of shopping on April 21st and 22nd.

If you need some convincing, here are some of the things you’ll find at the flea market this year:

Antiques

Jewelry

Sports cards

Computers

Collectibles

Floral arrangements

Candles

Pet supplies

Furniture

Clothing

…and MORE!

The Agricenter turns into a shopper’s paradise, providing retail therapy in huge amounts over this two day period, which occurs the third Saturday and Sunday of each month from 8 am-5 pm.

So the question remains: How big is “The Big One,” really? Well, if 500-800 vendors and 20-25,000 shoppers each month isn’t big then I don’t know what is. The space will actually accommodate more than 1,000 vendors and averages 10,000 customers a day!

Where are all of our Country Squire East shopaholics?

The festival, which has never been held in the Memphis region, was designed to give women more exposure in the arts. It will showcase the talents of female directors, producers and playwrights in a series of 20 performances, readings and workshops at The Circuit Playhouse, TheatreWorks and Playhouse on the Square in the Midtown Memphis Theatre District. It will be sponsored by nonprofit charity Women of Style, Spirit and Success, Inc.

Have you seen any of Florence’s work here in Memphis and/or onscreen in The Help? Are you a fan, Country Squire East resident?

Hey, hey you…Yes you, Country Squire East residents. Are you over your apartment decor that you have had laying around for years? Don’t worry; I won’t tell anyone. Maybe I’ll just blog about it. Just kidding! If your place needs a little freshening up and you’re just too overwhelmed to figure out where to start, one of the best things you can do is look to others for inspiration. Check out some of the posts below, courtesy of Little Green Notebook, and see if one of them floats your boat. These are real designs from real readers, not experts who have been doing this for years. See? You can do it! Check it out:

DIY Picture Frame

I’m always looking for inexpensive alternatives to custom framing. I’d rather spend the money elsewhere in a room. I’ve mentioned before that I like to pick up cheap art in good frames from thrift stores and flea markets, and later I switch out the art.

When I finished the chinese wallpaper panels a couple weeks back I moved over the gallery wall to the tv area in our living room. I wanted to included this peony painting because I like the dark shot of blue color. I’ve been meaning to frame it for a while now but it was painted on a European canvas which won’t fit in standard US frames. It’s not easy to make a frame from stock moulding you buy at the lumber yard, so I had an idea to repurpose one of the old frames from my collection.

I tucked the painting into the corner of the old frame and marked the edges on the frame. I did this twice – using the two best corners with the least amount of damage to the plasterwork.

Then I used a miter box and a hand saw to make four 45-degree cuts. If you have a miter saw, this step would be super fast, but even cutting the angles by hand wasn’t bad. The trick to fast, straight cuts is keeping the frame moulding flush with the miter box edge. It’s helpful to have a second set of hands here.

Four simple cuts later and we have the beginnings of a new frame!

I smoothed the cut edges with a sanding block until the two cut edges fit perfectly together.

Then I ran a bead of wood glue along the edges and stapled the two pieces together, right down the corner line four or five times.

Not bad, right? Pretty seamless.

While the glue was drying, I touched up the highlights on the frame with my trusty gold leaf pen so that the gilding would be a brighter yellow.

Gracie got in on the action too. She’s my little budding artist.

I forgot to take a photo, but I simply stapled a few times on the back around the perimeter of the painting at an angle to keep the canvas secured in place. Then it was done and ready to hang.

I’m so thrilled with the results here. Even if I had dropped $300 on custom framing, it wouldn’t have the age or patina this old frame has. I’m dying to cut down more unwanted frames for the other canvases I have in storage!

I changed my mind

So remember when I bought this mirror? And had plans to turn it into a chalkboard?

Well, I totally didn’t get around to it and I’m so glad! I moved the coral/black bookshelf to the back of our apartment and scooted the skirted console over to that wall. Once the sconces were over in the gallery wall, the old mirror felt really small. On a whim I pulled out this mirror that was intended to be a chalkboard, and it was true love. The mirror fits the wall perfectly and looks great in the space!

So the moral of the story is sometimes procrastination pays off.

Room Tours: Callie’s Home

Are you ready for photo overload? Callie emailed me a couple weeks ago and I saw a little peek of her house. I practically begged her to show me more! And I’m so glad she agreed to do a full tour here. I think her home is the *perfect* way to do neutrals. I’m always harping on the finding balance with warm and cool tones in a room. That’s true for neutral rooms too! This means you should mix your black and brown tones, your creams and grays. And if you want to throw in a random splash of color by way of a vase or small piece of art – well that’s all the better!

I hope you enjoy Callie’s house tour as much as I did. Here she is sharing some of her approach to decorating her lovely home (with a list of sources at the very bottom):

We built our home about a year ago, and I really took a lot of time to think beforehand about the look I wanted, both in the design of our home and in decorating it. Looking at images on blogs really is what gave me inspiration for my home, and I spent A LOT of time doing it. Images that I kept on coming back to were rooms by Ryan Korban and Mary McDonald. I really didn’t want an overload of anything TOO bloggy or trendy though, because I knew I would get tired of looking at it!

-I signed up for emails from a bunch of sites… then I waited for the sales to happen. Because I live in an area where there aren’t a ton of different stores, I bought a lot of items online. And because I was (mostly!) patient, nearly everything I ordered online I either got on sale (sometimes MAJOR sale!) or free shipping. Even the items I picked up at local stores were mostly on sale.

As much as I love the look designers create, I LOVE getting good deals! Nothing is better than telling someone, “Originally that was $XXX and I got it for $XX!” I’ve tried to see decorating my house as a marathon, not a sprint.

-I really only tried to purchase something that I could see in a specific spot in my home– what I found was that when I didn’t have a particular place in mind, I ended up not really liking what I picked up and felt like I wasted my money.

-Antique stores! And antique stores! And antique stores! I typically found a similar look to what I had seen online by going to a ton of antique stores… sometimes it took a little digging and patience, but I usually found what I was looking for at a fraction of the price I would have spent online (and usually even cheaper than on etsy, eBay, or One Kings Lane, although I have found some awesome deals there). AND I love the fun little things I came across as I was looking for something specific! That is where I got my instant gratification as a reward for all that waiting I’d done for online purchases.

-Where I really saved– accessories (by doing what I typed above), artwork (Hobby Lobby does custom cut mats for really cheap and I did most of the artwork by myself… and I am NOT an artist by any means!!), drapes (discount fabric sewn by my mom), and dressers/consoles (again, mostly all from antique stores and painted by my me or my dad).

I splurged on both of my sofas and on my coffee table– I saw the Hutton sofa from Room & Board and immediately knew it was the one because of its look and length (even though I looked for a cheaper version for about five months), and my husband sat on the leather sofa from Restoration Hardware and there was no changing his mind. I’m still a little uneasy about those splurges though!

Room Tours: Jenna’s Rental Bedroom Redo

Jenna from JWK Style submitted today’s room tour. I LOVE her idea of over-dyeing toile prints with a bright color! Such an expensive look for not a lot of money! Thanks for joining us today, Jenna!
******

When we moved into our rent house, the master bedroom was incredibly dark and depressing. After we painted I wanted to keep it as bright and fresh as possible. I was hoping for a completely different look than our previous bedroom, but I couldn’t justify buying all new curtain fabric and bedding.

I love the bold toiles by Manuel Canovas so I attempted a similar look with teal RIT dye using our traditional blue and white toile. I played around with scraps to find the right shade and used about 1 bottle of dye per curtain panel in the washing machine. Luckily there was enough fabric leftover to sew a bedskirt, so I was able to pull off a whole new color scheme for our bedroom for next to nothing!

This was our bedroom before we moved in. We replaced the mini-blinds with inexpensive roman shades from the hardware store and hung our own curtain rods. I couldn’t find curtain hardware I liked so I bought the ‘antique brass’ finish and spray painted the rods, clips, and rings with metallic gold Valspar. To prevent scratching, I used 2 coats of Polyurethane Gloss. So far so good!

Above the bed I hung an oil painting I found at Salvation Army a few years ago. Since there was so much color on the walls I decided on all-white bedding. I made the throw pillow out of silk ikat and the white duvet cover is an inexpensive one from Bed Bath & Beyond. I replaced the basic pillow cases with monogrammed shams from Pottery Barn and the ones behind them are from Target.

Most of our bedroom furniture was (very graciously) handed down to us but it was a mismatched mess. I wanted everything to coordinate so I painted everything myself to save money. The wicker chest (that doubles as my accessory closet) was a traditional white one that I spray painted. I replaced the wicker knobs with beaded ones from Anthropologie but eventually all the embellished parts popped off.

The gold backs stayed on the dresser and I reused the beaded pieces as lamp finials for our bedside lamps. (They remind me of the ones by Hillary Thomas Designs.)

The antique ginger jar lamps are from one of my favorite stores in San Antonio, Pagoda. The other bedside table used to be dark mahogany and I just painted around the existing handles.

Since our bathroom doesn’t have any counter space or wall outlets, I made a ‘vanity’ for myself between the windows. A mirror, desk, and chair is really all you need!

(Before)

The desk came from a hotel salvage store and I repainted it to match the bedside tables. Soon after, I came across a similar desk so I added detailing with gold leaf paint. The antique chair was a hand-me-down that I also painted and recovered.

For jewelry storage I used my pineapple sconces for bangles and brooches and a few vintage bowls on my desk to hold necklaces. The pink and gold sugar dish is from a vintage serving set and it’s the perfect size for earrings.

My makeup is scattered on a tray where I can easily find it since I’m usually running out the door! I keep a notepad on my desk to jot down sewing ideas and notes.

I love this tiny milk glass lamp that was my grandparents. I keep my favorite L’Objet candle and perfume beside it.

I made the lips print on a whim while I was trying to find the perfect shade of red lipstick. It reminded me of Andy Warhol’s Lips Print so I blotted, outlined, and framed it!

Our dresser across from the bed was my first piece of furniture to paint. It was a typical French Provincial piece that was light brown with dark brass handles. Whenever they start looking dingy I take them off and glob on some Brasso to keep them shiny.

One of the best parts of writing this blog for me is getting to share ideas I might never get to use myself, but that some of you might get to try. I LOVE getting emails with photos of your interpretations!!

Caroline wrote in to share a couple photos of a bookshelf she fancied up using this post as her inspiration. Caroline said:

“We’re renting a quirky midcentury ranch with plenty of oddities, one of which is a badly-proportioned shelving built-in in my daughter’s nursery (it used to be the room’s closet). I needed to liven up the space and your stripes were a perfect idea. To make the project really easy, I sourced 3-inch wide metallic gold tape online (they have various colors and sizes). A little measuring and taping later, the job was done! The only drawback is that the metallic surface does reflect the old wall’s flaws, but overall it is extremely stunning, adds dimension and brightens the space.”

Such a beautiful nursery, right? And I’m loving the tape source Caroline found. The two-inch tape is about $30 for 72 yards and the three-inch is $40. That’s pretty cheap wallpaper!

If you are making your way around Memphis for the day/night, you will likely want to keep some of that cash in your pocket for other trips. Well, you can definitely do that without skimping on food, services and pretty much anything else you can think of. Groupon does a great job at sharing deeply discounted products and services on their widely used site. Take a look at a few of their many offerings available to Country Squire residents:

$28 for Oil Change with Tire Rotation at Heartland Automotive Services Jiffy Lube ($61.98 Value)

Ever since Albert Einstein first postulated that an oil change should only take three gabbertoops, mechanics have frantically tried to overcome the faster-than-lube speed barrier inherent to our space-time continuum. Get the quickest lube of all time with this Groupon: for $28, you get an oil-change package at Heartland Automotive Services Jiffy Lube, valid at thirteen locations in Memphis, Bartlett, Collierville, Horn Lake, and Olive Branch (a $61.98 total value). The service package includes the following:

A Signature Service oil change with a preventive-maintenance package (a $39.99 value)

A tire rotation (a $21.99 value)

25% off any additional service over $74.99

The Jiffy Lube Signature Service oil change comes standard with a fresh-from-the-box oil filter and up to 5 quarts of motor oil, plus a comprehensive lineup of other vehicle-maintenance checkups, an exterior window wash, and interior floor vacuum. Trained technicians entreat cars to say “Ahh,” before quenching automotive thirst with a refill of transmission, differential, transfer-case, power-steering, and windshield-washer fluids. A detailed inspection enforces the well-behaved manners of the antifreeze and coolant reservoirs, engine air-filtration system, serpentine belts, wiper blades, and exterior lights. By evenly distributing the weight across each tire, a fresh tire rotation helps to minimize wear and tear, maximize traction, and avoid the need to conceal balding tires with cumbersome toupees.
Though Heartland Automotive Services Jiffy Lube sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

$10 for $20 Worth of Cupcakes and Cake Pops at Cupcake Cutie Etc. in Bartlett

Cupcakes are a preferable alternative to birthday cakes, whose constant accompaniment by off-key singing has depleted the planet’s finite supply of forced smiles. Garner genuine grins with this Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of cupcakes and cake pops at Cupcake Cutie Etc. in Bartlett.

The crafty bakers at Cupcake Cutie Etc.’s custom cupcake bar whip up fresh batches of mini cakes each day, which customers can ornament in an ever-changing selection of icings, filings, and toppings. Standard-size ($1.65+ each with one topping) and jumbo-size ($3.50+ with one topping) chocolate, red velvet, and lemon-flavored cupcakes emerge from the pan as fluffy as a cloud fresh from the dryer. Swirls of buttercream, caramel, and whipped icing provide a landing pad for free sprinkles and choices from up to 31 toppings, including chocolate chips, oreos, and almonds. Teeth sink into each cupcake to excavate gooey fillings such as cream cheese and strawberries. Cupcake Cutie’s baking team also crafts cupcake bouquets ($35) and cake pops ($24/one dozen). Patrons can arrive in store to see how many of the daily varieties they can pack between their cheeks at once, or call ahead and order custom creations. Although not valid with this offer, they also have a cafe available for parties and special occasions.

$10 for $20 Worth of Barbecue and Drinks at The Bar-B-Q Shop

Like a locked steamer trunk in an attic, barbecue recipes are better when they contain a closely guarded family secret. Finally taste the truth with this Groupon.

$10 for $20 Worth of Barbecue and Drinks

Chicken drummies with blue cheese ($10.25) and a barbecue bologna-and-cheese plate ($8.75) introduce the menu’s savory entrees, such as the polish-sausage sandwich ($6.25), half-chicken dinner ($11.95), and slab of ribs with sides for two ($24.95).

The Bar-B-Q Shop

The Bar-B-Q Shop’s casual interior mimics the core of a barbecue pit, with bright red walls, a charcoal ceiling, and occasional pictures of grazing pigs. Patrons may even feel a rise in temperature––but that’s more than likely from the trademark Dancing Pigs hot sauce, which won the Fiery Food Challenge national contest after competing against more than 800 entries.

Though it’s easy to relish the eatery’s ample offerings of smoked brisket, sausage, and tender rib slabs, the menu’s success is surely in the sauce. Dancing Pigs sauces and seasonings stem from recipes that are more than 50 years old. Once delivered by hand out of the back of a Ford Bronco, the brand has grown so popular that it’s now distributed by more than 100 Kroger stores in five states. After rallying napkins for a slab of sauce-slathered ribs, patrons at The Bar-B-Q Shop can cool taste buds with a frothy brew or swig from the restaurant’s fire extinguishers.
