Yesterday was quite the day. We took Emily to paint with watercolors here in the hospital and while she was painting, I got the call that my grandfather had passed away. He was 88 and he had been sick for a while. He passed in his sleep and I am very thankful for that.

Emily was very tired yesterday and spent a lot of the day napping. I could tell she wasn’t feeling very well. We got a call from one of Emily’s nurses that she might get to go home today. But that was before her episode in the middle of the night.

The doctor had told me there might be a little drainage from the abscess and he was right. Only there was a lot more then he was planning on. They are monitoring her closely, but needless to say we aren’t going home today.

This morning they put in the PICC line. It’s an semi-permanent IV that runs from her elbow crease in her arm to the tip of the heart. It is meant to administer antibiotics over a period of time. They would like for her to be on antibiotics for 2 weeks after we leave and home health will teach me how to administer them.

The doctor told me today that we won’t be released until her white count is around 10-12k. Right now it’s 22k. So it might be a few days until we are released. I am not in any hurry though. I want to make sure that she is on the mend first.

Nielsen (you know the people that track the TV ratings) has a program that tracks your shopping purchases called The Home Scan Panel.

Here’s how it works: Sign uphere if you have a landline and here if you only have a cell phone and upon approval they send you a scanner. You scan all the purchases you bring into your house, groceries, healthy and beauty, clothes, etc. (This is a fun thing to let the kids do!) Once a week, you hook the scanner up to your computer (or you can elect to get the scanner that submits it’s data over a landline) and in about a minute it transmits the data back to Nielsen.

You earn points for each weekly submission (150 points but it goes up the longer you’ve been a member) and then you also complete a short survey on each store you shopped at that week (100 points per store).

I went to the food court yesterday for both breakfast and lunch. They have a really nice food court here and the prices are very reasonable. I spent about $15 for my hubby and I.

How are you doing?

Emily has been a real trooper. She has had the best attitude. She is all smiles and laughs. And I am so thankful to God that I have all these wonderful moments. I try not to think about what might of happened if we hadn’t come to Children’s on Sunday. God’s hand has been in this the whole time. He is truly amazing. And I definitely believe in the power of prayer and I am able to take such great comfort in knowing that I have this amazing support system of friends on the internet that are thinking and praying for us. I am in tears now. I don’t mean to sound sappy but each of you mean so much to me. You are my rock through this. I can’t even begin to thank you all.

Emily has a great spirit and its so easy to forget that she is as sick as she is. Since her surgery, she has ran no fever, complained of no pain, and has began to regain her appetite. But she has an infection raging in her body that is going to take weeks to recover from. Kids are just so tough. The doctor came in last night and said they drained the abscess but the pouch is still there and there is a 20-30% chance it will refill before the surgery in 6 weeks. We are waiting on the cultures to come back today to learn more. I still can’t believe my baby went 10 days with a ruptured appendix and I didn’t know! (Oh here comes the waterworks again.) It just baffles me because when you think appendicitis, you think severe abdominal pain and her pain wasn’t severe. I took her to the doctor twice and they missed it (yeah I am changing doctors, already found a new one). I am just thankful the Lord lead us here on Sunday. And would you believe when we arrived the ER had nobody in it?? It was empty. That hardly EVER happens!

Children’s Hospital is amazing. The staff is so friendly and they are eager to get you whatever you need. They have a pantry on the floor with drinks and snacks for the patient and family. They are constantly asking us if we need anything to make our stay more comfortable. There is a nice TV with a built in DVD player. The room could stand to be a bit bigger and this chair bed is not that comfortable but they got me an egg crate mattress which helps.

There is an activity room on our floor for kids 5-11. They have games, toys, dvds, arts and crafts, etc. Emily will be allowed to go there today. Last night I went and checked her out 2 Scooby Doo DVDs and a board game. How neat is that?? They also have this huge, amazing center called The Children’s Harbor. It is huge and has tons of amenities like game rooms, basketball courts, arts and craft centers, etc. She is also free to go there today. They have a painting class I think she will really like. They also have these wagons that you can pull your child around the hospital in to get them a change of scenery. I took Emily to see the big Disney figurine display and she loved that!

It’s heartbreaking seeing all the sick kids though. But I say a prayer for each one and thank God they have a nice hospital like this one to come to. I can’t say enough great things about this hospital. I am truly blown away.

I am doing as good as a mother can be in this situation. My husband actually was under the impression that I could leave yesterday. I had to burst his bubble. There is no way that I am leaving her side. It would literally rip my heart in two. The hospital does have wifi and I brought my mini laptop with me and I am able to blog some. I don’t want to get too far behind or leave you guys hanging. But their free wifi is so slow. Pictures load like they did on the old dial up. It’s kind of amusing and takes me back to 15 years ago when internet was still in the stone age. I do have an amazing friend who is helping me with some of my posts. It’s awesome having her to help.

I am sleeping as good as I can and taking care of myself and baby #3. I am 13 weeks pregnant today! The baby seems to be behaving. It seems like they know that sissy is sick. Jacob has been staying with my mother in law. He came up yesterday for an hour to visit Emily and he was so sweet with her. Until he got tired of being here and then he was “fun”.

They are inserting a pict iv today. She will be on antibiotics for 2 weeks. They mentioned having a home health nurse come to administer the antibiotics, but I don’t know many details yet. They will sedate her to put it in and plan to do it this morning. So please keep her in your prayers. I will update you was soon as I know more.

For those of you that haven’t been following the story…. Emily had what I thought was a stomach bug followed by a UTI. This lasted for 9 days before I took her to the ER at Children’s Hospital. (She had already been to the doctor twice and was on antibiotics.) They found that her appendix had ruptured 10 days prior and she had a pus filled abscess the size of a softball in her abdomen. Monday they went in and drained the abscess. Now we are working on healing the infection and getting her better. In 5-6 weeks, we will return to have her appendix removed. Right now it’s just a wait and see game. All prayers and thoughts are appreciated!

Emily came out of the surgery with flying colors. She has not complained of pain at all and insists she is a 0. Before she was saying she was a 4/5! She also has eaten some, goes to the bathroom on her own and is healing remarkably well. I am not getting my hopes up yet…. the surgeon team came in this morning and said the way she is acting is not normal. They expect her to be throwing up, in pain, etc. So we will see how she does today. We expect to be here until at least tomorrow. We are waiting on cultures to come back and to see how she is healing internally.

My husband took the week off from work and my mother-in-law is watching my son. I sent hubby home last night to sleep (we both only got 2 hours on Sunday) and I have slept off and on from 7 pm to 5:30 am. I feel better and well rested. I just wish these chair beds were more comfortable.

A few of my awesome readers have asked if they can send Emily a get well card. She LOVES getting mail and she keeps her cards for years. She still has some from her 3rd birthday that she still reads. So if you feel lead to send her a card (don’t feel obligated please!), here’s our addy:

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

Surprisingly we didn’t pay for food yesterday. My mom brought a huge basket of snacks and my dad paid for lunch. They also have a pantry area for the parents and they have drinks, snacks, etc.

How are you doing?

Here is part 4 in the series of Chip’s Touring Plans for Walt Disney World. In case you missed Magic Kingdom, Epcot, or Hollywood Studios be sure to check them out and let us know what you think.

Disney Animal Kingdom or DAK is HUGE! Covering over 500 Acres. While not all of that is places you and I will go it is still a pretty big park. I enjoy walking around and looking at all the details Disney put into this park. I have seen many behind the scenes specials on DAK and it is amazing what Disney has done with and for this park.

Here is a tried and tested Touring Plan that my family and I like to do when visiting DAK.

Get there early

We like to get here before Rope drop and make reservations at Tusker House for breakfast. You can get some great photos of the Tree of Life without anybody in it. Also the pictures of Donald & Friends in their safari gear is very unique.

We have even seen some photopass photographers there taking pictures for all the early morning breakfast people. So be sure to bring your photopass card with you.

Going on a safari

We usually finish breakfast around the time of rope drop. Which means people are making a mad dash to Expedition Everest. Luckily we are on the other side of the park from the mad dash of people. So we jump on the 2nd busiest ride at the park Kilimanjaro Safaris. If you have a little one try and they love trains you can squeeze in a quick ride on the Wildlife Express Train before you leave Africa.

EVEREST!

After the safari or train ride we usually bypass every other ride and head straight for Expedition Everest. If you can ride EE twice as it will be very busy by mid day.

Here is a Disneyworld Quick Tip for ya. If there is a long line try going in the single ride line. You may not get in next to the person you came with but at least you can ride the coaster. Also works well for families with toddlers or infants where the parents can ride swap the kids.

Nemo or Dino

Depending on the time you have 2 ways you can go. If you are in time for Finding Nemo the Musical head on over. If you just missed the first show take note of the next showtime and head to Dinoland USA. Either way you go you will be in the Dinoland area at least till lunch time. Be sure to ride all the rides a few times if possible. If you have little ones let they run around in The Boneyard to get the wiggles out. Its good for those who are young at heart too.

Be sure to stop by Dino-Bites for one my favorite snacks the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich!!! This monstrous thing is only 1 snack credit!

Back to the beginning

After consuming your snack now its time to enjoy a show. We usually head back to the Tree of Life for It’s a Bugs Life. This is one of my favorite 3D shows at Disney. The walk around the Tree of Life is spectacular with several great picture taking spots. Be sure to notice the attention to detail Disney Imagineers did on the Tree.

Get our your pens

Next head on over to Camp Minnie Mickey. This is another one of those instances where if you are in time head up to see The Festival of the Lion King or if we are to late/early get some character autographs.

If you ate at Tusker House for breakfast you would already have Mickey & Friends in their Safari Outfit pictures and autographs.

Jamming Jungle

Depending on what time it is you may be getting close to 3:45pm and the Jammin Jungle Parade. The Parade starts at the Tusker House Gate at Harambe Village. It then winds around Discovery Island, and returns to the Tusker House Gate.

Head up near the Yak & Yeti to see the parade so you are not locked into any specific area of the park. Atleast here you can get out and goto Asia or Dinoland USA and not feel like you are stuck.

Time to get wet

This part here is optional as you will get soaked on Kali River Rapids. If you are not into getting wet check out the Flight of Wonder Bird Show..Or like us do both :)

Check out some animals

Now is the time to relax and check out the animals. Head up to Rafiki’s Planet Watch and check out the animals. This is where you can sneak in some learning on your little ones. Walk around check out all the exhibits and animals and just have fun. But not t0 much fun as the park will be closing soon.

Now its time to say goodbye

Disney’s Animal Kingdom closes ALOT earlier than the other parks. Most days it closes at 5pm. Disney has to feed and tend to the animals which I totally understand. This works out great for us as we like to eat Dinner early so head over to my favorite buffet Boma – Flavors of Africa!!!
