If you are traveling to Disney World between January and July 2013 and you want to go ahead and guarantee your room reservation, you can book a room-only reservation. All you need to pay today is a 1-night deposit. If it stays room-only, the balance is due when you check out of the resort.

If you want to convert your room-only to a package deal when the 2013 rates and deals are released, it is easy to do and you won’t lose any money. The deposit you have paid will be applied towards the $200 deposit required for packages. Remember you can change the promotion you are using for your trip at any time up to 45 days before your arrival date. After that, you will have to pay $200 to make a change.

Deals for the upcoming year are usually released around June – July, so we should see some deals soon. But if you are worried about scoring that specific room at that specific resort (like Art of Animation), you might want to go ahead and do a room only reservation so you can lock in your dates.

Just remember that you will have to call Disney yourself to change to the new promotion when it is released. However if you use an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner like Destinations in Florida, they will change your reservation for you to the better deal and watch for future deals to make sure you pay the lowest rate possible.

My family loves to travel, but we also want to save towards our future. But I’ve never been comfortable spending a large amount on a vacation unless we have a cushion in our savings. I’ve been “Couponing to Disney” unofficially for many years, and since finding Kristin’s site it has been so much easier. About a year ago we decided that we would like to be saving a bit more. I looked over our budget and realized that we were spending about $xxxx a month in bills, and other necessary expenses. It didn’t seem to fluctuate more than $200 in any given month. So my husband and I came up with the idea of putting anything over a certain amount directly into our savings account. Once there, 25% of that amount is added to our family trip fund.

I won’t be using my real financial information, so lets use a $1000 paycheck as an example. Say we are expecting a $900 paycheck, but because of overtime or other factors, the amount turns out to be $1000. That “extra” $100 is immediately put into savings. Once there, I divide the amount 75% towards future savings and 25% into the trip fund. It’s a guilt free way to save for travel.

Example:
$900 expected
$1000 received = $100 extra

$100 divided between regular savings and trip fund =
$75 savings
$25 trip fund

We never miss it, because we look at it as “found money”. If it had stayed in our checking account, it would have eventually been spent on who-knows-what. Since we started doing this, our trip fund has more than tripled with very little effort on our part. And it’s had no impact on our daily lives. Plus, our regular savings is growing at a faster rate, which is a relief.

Using this method we are able to save for our future and our future fun!

Reader Katie shared this idea on how to prevent extra loads of dishes to do! Which not only saves money but time too!

My money saving tip is to use a different colored plastic tumbler (cup) for each member of your family. We were finding that our dishwasher was filling up WAY too fast and it was mostly with cups because everyone would take a different cup each time they got a drink, mainly b/c they weren’t sure whose cup was whose. So we went to Target and found plastic tumblers on sale (the spring/summer is a great time to find them) and bought a different color for each family member. Now there is no confusion on who left their cup where. Along with this, we’ve implemented a strict 1 cup per day rule. This has saved us a ton of money because we don’t run the dishwasher nearly as much!

If you are planning a trip to Disney World Resorts and would like the use of a rental car for only a few days of your stay, you are in luck! Located right on Disney property near the Magic Kingdom is the Walt Disney World Car Care Center, a car rental service operated by Alamo and National. When you are ready to pick up your rental car, they will send a shuttle to your resort to take you to the Car Care Center. When you drop a car off at the center, they will also take you back to your resort.

If you rent a car at the airport or other locations off of Disney property, you can also drop the rental car off at the Walt Disney World Car Care Center.

You can contact the Car Care Center at 407-824-3470 to schedule your pick up and drop off times. They should be scheduled at least one hour in advance. Shuttle service to and from your resort location is provided 7 days a week, Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. — 8:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. — 6:00 p.m. (holiday hours may vary).

Survey Savvy is another great survey site. The surveys are in dollar amounts (so no figuring out how many points you need to get $1) and the minimum payment is just $1! So you can cash out as soon as you complete a survey (that is the lowest threshold of any of the survey companies I recommend).

It gets hot here in the summer and if you have any windows that face the west, it really heats your house up in the afternoon when the sun is the hottest and getting lower in the sky.  It spends hours beaming directly on those windows, creating more heat in your house!  Believe me, I know.  The front of my house faces west!

We invested in good blackout curtains for our West facing picture window and keep them closed when the sun is beaming in the late afternoon. It saved us hundreds in AC costs last summer, and paid for themselves after only a few months!

Kroger Stores are offering 4Xs the Fuel Points when you purchase gift cards through June 17th. This is a great time to buy the Disney Gift Cards to pay for your trip. You could also stop by and pick up a Restaurant Gift Card before you go to the restaurant.

Here’s how it works:

There are three ways to earn Fuel Points:

1. Purchasing Groceries (normal exclusions apply): $100 in Groceries = 100 Points
2. Non-federally funded Prescriptions: 2 Prescriptions = 100 Points
3. 4X Gift Card Points (normal exclusions apply): $50 in Gift Cards = 200 Points

For each increment of 100 Points redeemed at the pump, 10¢ off per gallon is awarded up to $1 off per gallon:

• 100 Points = 10¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up
• 200 Points = 20¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up
