Former Glastonbury High distance standout Donn Cabral ran the fastest time by an American in the steeplechase this year Friday night at the Oxy High Performance Meet at Occidental College in Los Angeles.

I can remember a lot of rainy days when the Race for the Cure 5K was run at Walnut Hill Park in New Britain. Now it's called the Race in the Park and it benefits the CT Breast Health Initiative and it was beautiful Saturday for the men's and women's 5K races. Maybe a tad on the hot side, but nice.

Three runners from Connecticut - Ryan Bak (above), a Suffield High and Trinity College grad, Shannon McHale of Simsbury and Lucas Meyer of Ridgefield - will compete in Saturday's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston. The men's race starts at 8 a.m. and the women's race at 8:15. It's the first time in a while the two races were run together. For the 2008 Olympics, the men's race was held before the NYC Marathon and the women's race was held before Boston.

Olympic Trials: Ryan Bak qualifies in debut marathon

Ryan Bak, formerly of Suffield and Trinity College, qualified for the Olympic marathon trials in his debut marathon with a 2:14:17 second-place finish at the California International Marathon in Sacramento Sunday. Bak, 30, a 2003 Trinity graduate who now lives in Bend, Oregon, was named the USATF Athlete of the Week for his accomplishment, which was almost five minutes under the qualifying time of 2:19. He will compete in the Olympic Trials in Houston Jan. 14.
