The students traveled to the ISEF, in Phoenix, Ariz., to compete with more than 1,500 high school students from around the globe. The event gave students an opportunity to showcase independent research and vie for more than $3 million in prizes. The Connecticut student delegation went to the ISEF, expenses paid, as part of their prize for earning top awards at the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair (CSEF) earlier this year.

On May 10, over 270 Rotarians from District 7890 and their families teamed up with the Rock Cats for End Polio Now night. In addition to being treated to an old fashioned double header and fireworks at the Stadium, polio survivors were honored by the Rock Cats by marching around the infield in the End Polio Now parade and throwing out first pitches. Polly Hincks, Kathy Tremblay and Dick Seidman, were recognized as survivors of polio. The family of Jean Schwanda and Charlie Schwanda attended the game in honor of their parents. Jean, a polio survivor who passed away in 2005 and Charlie, her devoted husband and Rotarian who passed away this year. Today there are only three countries where polio is endemic: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. We are truly "this close" to the global erdadication of polio. There was a lot to celebrate on Earth Day at Best Cleaners this year as the environmentally-friendly drycleaning business rang up donations for the Connecticut Forest and Park Association (CFPA), the first non-profit conservation organization in the state. With 11 locations throughout central Connecticut, Best Cleaners teamed up with CFPA for a special fundraising campaign that included Best donating a percentage of its drycleaning service sales and collecting donations from its customers. The net result was the presentation of $1100 to CFPA Executive Director Eric Hammerling to help the organization's efforts to protect land for public enjoyment while maintaining over 825 miles of hiking and biking trails.

That changed on April 6 in San Diego when she was recruited to compete in the first North American Laughter Competition. Beth was in San Diego for the 26th Annual Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor Conference where she was given The Spirit of AATH Award. This award honors someone who actively demonstrates good humor, grace, verve and a spirit of determination in the face of life's many challenges. Beth competed with a group of twenty-two laughers who fought hard to make the audience laugh with a variety of laughs. Video of this event has travelled the globe even making Japan's prime time news.
