Warwickian 17 Coventry Tech 5

WITH several first-XV regulars unavailable, Warwickian switched 50-plus back-row Phil Brown to scrum-half where he turned in a heroic performance.

Carey O'Neill, Josh Hopley and Russ Morey also plugged gaps with commendable commitment as the home side took charge with three tries in the first 30 minutes courtesy of skipper Quintus Neethling, full-back Jamie Bearman and flanker Ricky Bearman.

Mike Collins chipped in with a conversion and, although Warwickian were unable to maintain that attacking fluency, they defended stoutly to restrict Tech to a consolation touchdown.

Redditch 19 Harbury 0

HAVING beaten Redditch twice this season, Harbury came unstuck against a powerful pack on a bone-hard pitch.

A succession of injuries picked up on that unyielding surface saw the first-half extended to 48 disjointed minutes as Redditch, playing up the slope but with the wind at their backs, nudged ahead with a brace of penalties.

A third made it 9-0 early in the second half and, with Harbury disrupted by the loss of two back-row players, the home side cashed in on their extra possession to bustle through for two unconverted tries.

Keresley 5 Stoke Old Boys 13

KERESLEY produced an excellent first-half performance to neutralise Stoke's powerful runners and seize the initiative when a penalty move saw Ant Collins force his way to the line and feed Tom McKnight.

Not for the first time this season, however, K's made a sluggish start to the second period and were quickly pegged back by a try in the corner.

And Stoke gradually took charge of proceedings, nudging ahead with another try and making sure with a late penalty.

Dunlop 36 Kings Norton 16

THE miserable weather made it difficult to sustain constructive rugby, but Dunlop were always in the driving seat once they had overhauled an early penalty with a try in the corner by Tom O'Toole.

Pack pressure paved the way for Stuart Edwards to sweep home on the outside and, following a sharp break by John Phillips, some nifty footwork enabled him to strike again and give the Coventry outfit a 17-3 cushion at the interval.

The second period became increasingly scrappy and Norton reduced the arrears with a couple of penalties.

But Edwards again intervened with a 40-yard dash that set up an excellent converted try for Steve Adcock and, with the visitors deflated, fly-half Craig McGrory and centre Rich Craner followed suit.

Kettering 13 Kenilworth 38

KENILWORTH'S play-off ambitions remain in their own hands, but they must see off Peterborough in their final home fixture this Saturday to set up a winners-take-all showdown at Luctonians on April 18.

Their triumph in bleak conditions at Waverley Road was achieved in the face of adversity because, with Russ Clarke, Pete Roberts and Mark Rea all laid up, winger/full back Dave Clements had to slot in at fly-half.

And although Tim Jones's opening penalty for the home side was quickly countered by Elliot Brown, it was Kettering who seized the initiative when Jacob Naube wriggled through for a try converted by the full-back.

But Clements combined neatly with half-back Jamie Peacock to claim a try and, after Jones and Brown had swapped penalties, Kenilworth nosed in front when Clements broke through to set up James Hersey for another touchdown.

Bedford Athletic 15 Broadstreet 34

STREET earned an interval broadside from coach Lee Crofts after a laboured performance left them with a 16-6 lead against their rock-bottom hosts.

But they wrapped up an ultimately comfortable success which means that one more victory from their last three fixtures will secure an automatic passage to the National League.

Jamie Elphick's penalty opener for Bedford was eclipsed by two successful kicks from Dan Richards before Street logged their first try - Adam Watts, back from his lengthy injury lay-off, collecting Richards's kick-through to dive over.
Nuneaton Old Edwardians 12 Leamington 18

TRAILING 12-0 early in the second half, Leamington battled back for a crucial victory that edged them into pole position with two matches to play.

Although the sides are level on 30 points, Spa have a markedly superior points difference as they prepare to take on Droitwich and Kidderminster while the Weddington men line up against Newbold and Spartans.

With the wind and rain at their backs in the first period, Old Eds contrived to evade the consequences of a series of penalties and broke through in the 32nd minute when second-row Mark Stevens powered over in the corner.

Leigh Jones's conversion attempt rebounded from a post, but two minutes into the second period he cashed in on excellent work by Craig Quick and Ashley Kalnins to dart home between the posts for a try he converted himself.

To their credit, however, Leamington refused to panic and their measured approach was quickly rewarded as Tom Secher found his range in the more favourable conditions to slot home a couple of penalties.

Old Eds resisted gamely as the visitors pressed home their advantage but good pack possession created the opportunity for winger Simon Magill to cut through.

Two minutes later Danny Ruyssevelt galloped forward in pursuit of Secher's clearance, seizing the ball as the home defence wavered and slipping it to Alex Carroll who charged over for a try that was brilliantly upgraded by Secher's wide-angled kick.

Chris Roe leads the way in season finale

Warwickshire's first and second sides wrapped up their campaigns in Premier A & B in the Inter-County Championships.

The first team enjoyed excellent wins over Essex (7-3) and Surrey (6-4) but lost 6-4 to a Hertfordshire side boasting five England internationals.

That left them third overall on 56 points, two behind Hertford and five shy of Yorkshire.

Coventry doubles specialist Chris Roe won all six games at Milton Keynes with partners Carl Goode and Claire Millward.

Millward enjoyed five wins, three with Roe and two ladies doubles with Coventry's Jill Pittard, who triumphed in all three of her singles matches.

NIC Nuneaton Sunday League round-up

SPORTING White Lion tamed Royal Oak Bedworth 5-3 as they came from behind to lift the Sid Clay Memorial Cup and complete the first leg of their league and cup double ambitions.

Kyle Madden fired Oak ahead but Wayne Smith levelled for Lion only for Gary O'Keefe and then the prolific Lewis Halfacree to give the Bedworth side a seemingly winning advantage.

However, the rampant Lions roared back impressively as the dual spearhead of Carl Hutchinson and Lewis Stuart bagged a brace apiece in an impressive fightback to ease the Arbury Roaders to a deserved success.

Attleborough Arms are setting themselves an unenviable record as they search for a goal in Premier Two.

They have now gone five games without scoring and drew a blank again last weekend after they lost 4-0 to Ambleside, for whom Ian Morris netted either side of half time.

Lee Welland stretched the lead to 3-0 before Ian Chaddaway scored direct from a corner to seal victory.

At the top of the table, Bedworth Libs caused an upset as they beat leaders Hill Top 3-1 with Scott Jurkiewicz, Mark Harding and Andy Mosey their marksmen. Danny Armiger replied.

But second placed Black Horse Sports went down 3-2 to Collycroft Cricketers while fourth placed Bull & Anchor tasted defeat, losing 3-2 to Crystal Sunday, who had Nathan Gilliver, Dean Tyler and Lee Hirst on target.

Stockingford Sports stay three points clear at the top of Division One following the 4-0 trouncing of Lancet and White Hart to go second, on goal difference, thanks to a 2-1 verdict over Hartshill Sports Reserves.

Both sides contributed to a sporting game but goals from Zak Fotheringham and Mark Horne gave Hart the win.

Bermuda Sunday occupy the third promotion place due to a 3-1 decision over Haunchwood Sports Reserves who slip to fourth.

Ian Quade gave Haunchwood a second half lead but Matthew Miller popped in the equaliser for Bermuda before two goals from Scott Stuart put the game beyond the Tunnel boys.

Trent Reserves collected all three points against Wentworth Wanderers. Jai Leech put them in front at the break before a Joleon Docherty double wrapped up the 3-0 success.

Bedworth United 1 Chasetown 0

EVERGREEN Robbie Beard bagged a late winner for Bedworth to earn his side a 1-0 win at the expense of the play-off hopefuls Chasetown.

Substitute Beard came on midway through the second period despite being far from 100 per cent fit but snatched the glory on 85 minutes when he beat two defenders on the edge of the area and although he miscued his low 12-yarder, the ball bobbled past the keeper and just inside the post.

Earlier in the proceedings Greenbacks keeper Andy Kemp produced several excellent saves to keep a deserved clean-sheet as Bedworth netted their second win in four days.

Rugby Town 2 Bashley 3

RUGBY TOWN are in a BGB Southern Premier Division relegation dog-fight following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Bashley at Butlin Road last night.

All the goals came in the opening half with the visitors taking the lead through Jeremy Tarr on 21 minutes while soon, after more defensive uncertainty by Valley, Dave Allen to double the advantage.

David Kolodynski slotted in his 20th goal of the campaign to cut the deficit just past the half hour and ex-Nuneaton winger David Staff restored parity on 38 minutes.

However, right on the interval 'Bash' snatched what proved to be the match winner as Charlie Knight found himself unmarked to rifle home.

Southam United 3 Darlaston Town 1

IMPRESSIVE Southam United completed the first leg of a double bid by landing the Birmingham County FA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup with a 3-1 win over Darlaston Town at Damson Lane.

In a fine display of attacking football, Saints, who are chasing the Midland Combination Premier Division title, were too hot for their West Midlands League rivals as goals by Lee Scott, Daniel Pirvu and substitute Tom Friend bagged the club's first silverware since winning the BCFA Vase in 1998.

Scott broke the deadlock on 17 minutes when his header was stopped on the line but the defender followed up to steer the ball through the crowded goalmouth and into the net.

Just before the interval Luke Cole was upended and Pirvu converted the penalty.
