Author: Darryl Rozell

“Country music is the people’s music. It just speaks about real life and about truth and yes it tells things how they really are.” – Faith Hill

Country music is actually one of the hottest forms of music around the twentieth century. Its origins might be traced back when the early European immigrants came to America and brought their traditional music from their homelands, which first came as ballads and songs from the British territories. Their early life on the Southern Appalachian Mountains and in the West wasn’t easy and music was the only method to express their feelings. The banjo, that was then the slaves’ version of the fiddle, was really the only lead instrument of the early American folk songs. It was first used and popularized inside the rural communities by the African-Americans. The creation of country music was widely affected by the interaction of European, African and American cultures. Later in the 1900′s, the steel guitar and drums entered as major accompanying instruments for this music. The recognition of country music began to rise in the 1920′s and it was often exclusively used to refer to hillbilly music. Its entrance to America has remarkably flourished. In 1930′s, as radios arrived to the scene, it rapidly became a popular style of entertainment. WSM’s Grand Ol’ Opry, soon was a popular radio show in Nashville, Tennessee and gave rise to country singer stars. This place was eventually known as the birthplace of country music. Country music’s stylistic origins primarily came from maritime folk music, gospel, blues, bluegrass, anglo- celtic music, Appalachian folk music and old-time music. The introduction of other instruments like the Electric Bass, Electric Guitar, Piano, Drums and Electronic Keyboard made country music more interesting to both old and young country musicians. The changing instrumentation had dramatically drawn more country stars not only from Nashville but across the United States. Today, this music is among the best-selling genres next to rock and pop music. Country music has remarkably evolved and it’s also now often useful to describe a selection of styles, fusion genres and subgenres. Let’s catch a peek at how country music has evolved and the way it paved a way for the prominence of today’s superstars. As usual, music dictionary will undoubtedly be with you along the way. Early stars of country music Country music’s rise to fame was started by Jimmie Rodgers plus the Carter Family in the 1920′s. They were famous for the fusion of country, blues, jazz, cowboy, gospel and folk. His “Blue Yodel” composition became an immediate hit that sold over a million records and catapulted him to stardom during the early country music. The Hillbilly boogie The recognition of Hillbilly music was sparked by Johnny Bartfield’s recording of “Boogie Woogie” in 1939. The song quickly became a hit and soon was considered the earliest country boogie. The “Freight Train Boogie” was also a notable contribution to the combined journey of country music and blues to the direction of another subgenre, the rockabilly.

Bluegrass, Folk and Gospel

After The Second World War, Bluegrass, which actually started from the name “Blue Grass Band” the band name of Bill Monroe emerged, along with Gospel and Folk music that later replaced Hillbilly. This fusion named “country and Western” eventually topped inside the music charts in 1949.

The Nashville Sound

Country Music took its toll in 1950-1960 as soon as the Nashville Sound was developed. The blending of big band jazz, swing pop styling along with storytelling refined country right into a multi-million dollar industry replacing the honky-tonk style. The adoption of the smooth elements was pioneered by the Nashville A-Team. The Prominent musicians during this period were Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold and Jim Ed Brown.

Outlaw Country

Regarded as a subgenre that revolutionized country music within the 1970′s and 1980′s, Outlaw Country was inspired by traditional honky tonk sounds of the previous era. This style is usually connected with, among others, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr. Gary Stewart. A number of other sub-genres have emerged in the following years.

Alternative Country

Probably the most popular sub-genres in the 90′s was alternative country. 1990′s was really a significant decade in the past of country music where a diverse group of musicians and singers outside of the mainstream country music converged and incorporated the influences of punk and alternative styles. Ryan Adams, Lyle Lovett and Will Oldham were some of prominent alternative country superstars in this decade.

20th Century Superstars

A number of rock and pop stars boldly crossed-over with country as well as the beautiful infusion of their styles and music. Richard Marx together with his “Days In Avalon” album, Bon Jovi and Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Hootie also, the Blowfish and George Strait were among the popular artists who gained record-breaking success in this genre.

Born in Moscow, Russia, Igor Presnyakov studied classical music at a nearby academy and would eventually graduate as both a guitarist and a conductor for ensembles.
He relocated to the Netherlands to further his career, which has now spanned over 35 years.
His unique acoustic guitar-style is influenced by various musical genres from Reggae, Rock and Roll, R&B, Country-western, Jazz and even Heavy Metal.
His most noticeable attribute, is his creative style of “beating” the percussion of the song, onto the body of his acoustic guitar while playing.
This replicates the sound of multiple musicians, while only Igor is playing.
While he sometimes sings on many of his original and cover-songs, Igor is more famous for mimicking the vocal parts of a song, into guitar-solos, while often adding a softer, jazzier sound.

Igor’s popularity has risen since he first debuted on Youtube in 2007. He currently has over 89 million views, in addition to his subscribers, which is over 181,000.

Igor is also now officially endorsed by both Takamine guitars and Fender Amplification.

He is well-known for his ability to create unforeseen sonics with his instrument, as well as for his extraordinary showmanship. He was able to express his emotions into the music in such way nobody had ever done before. His superstar carrer lasted only four years but his impact on a whole genre of rock & roll music is huge. He was born Johny Allen Hendrix on the 27th of November, 1942 in Seattle, WA. He grew up with his mother beacuse Jimi’s father Al was fighting in the WWII in Europe. His mother‘s poverty and the fear of her husband’s life lead her to alcoholism. Young Jimi moved to his relatives in California and lived there until 1946, when his father returned from the war. He subsequently changed boy‘s name to James Marshall Hendrix and became fanatically religious, ineffectively trying to bring his son to religious faith, too. Jimi obtained his first guitar at the age of 16. He learned to play it while listening to the southern blues records. It has to be mentioned that he was left-handed and was forced to play the right-hand guitar, but he didn’t have any difficulties at all. At the age of 17 Jimi joined the 101st airborne divison and was trained to be a paratrooper. In those times he formed his first band along with his fellow soldier. He was honorably discharged from the army because of the broken ankle. After that he moved to New York and began his musical career. Hendrix was performing as a back-up guitarist with some well-known blues outfits, but his talents and theatral showmanship couldn’t fully develop until he became a soloist and performed alone. That happened after the Animals bassist Chas Chandler discovered him and convinced him to move to London in September 1966. Hendrix founded his own group dubbed the Jimi Hendrix Experience and released his solo debut Are You Experienced? (1967). He immediately became a superstar, unforgetable singles Hey Joe, Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary all reached Top 10 in UK charts and his live performances at the Monterey pop and Woodstock festivals became legendary. He played his guitar behind his back, over head, with his teeth and he even set it on fire while praying to the guitar gods who gave him such an unbelievable musical skills.

He was also the first one to smash his guitar to shreds, followed by many other rock musicians including Nirvana. Everyone from music moguls to teenage kids were taken by Hendrix‘ experimentation. He managed to release only two another full-length albums, called Axis: Bold As Love and the double-LP Electric Ladyland, before he died at the age of 27 in 1970. His death itself is covered by a mystery. The wide-spread version of his death is the drug overdose but the truth may be that he died after and allergic reaction caused by a sleeping pills, suffocated on his own vomit. The fact whether he commited suicide or not has never been confirmed.

Hendrix spent a lot of time in the recording studio experimenting and producing material he never released while he was alive. This along with some other live performances were released in countless posthumous compilations. The material was also the focus of a great controversy because producer Alan Douglas took control of these projects, re-recorded and modified many of the original records with aditional musicians. Lastly, after a lenghty legal dispute, the rights to Jimi’s estate, including all of his original recordings, were returned to Al Hendrix, guitarist’s father, in 1995. Then Al began to get Hendrix‘ legacy in order, and reissued all of his original works with greatly improved, remastered sound.

These days, if you look up Nickelback online, you´ll find plenty of places to download music videos and listen to the band. Their beginnings were less than auspicious, however. This Canadian band was started up by four musicians, Chad, Brandon and Mike Kroeger and Ryan Peake, in Alberta. Their first album was an extended play disc called Hesher in 1996. Later that same year, they released a full length album that basically flopped. The album, Curb, produced a single, “Fly”, that never made it to any charts and was circulated only in the local area on radio stations.

Despite the disappointment of their first recordings, the men of Nickelback went on to record The State, their second album, just two years later. This time, they struck gold and were given a record contract with EMI and Roadrunner Records. Their second album was re-released as a EMI/Roadrunner production in 2000, four years after their first album flopped and this time it hit gold, literally, in both the United States and in Canada.

It wasn´t until Silver Side Up, the third full length album for the band, that they finally hit the mainstream market and became popular with the general public. The single from that album, “How You Remind Me” hit the top of the charts across the board in the US and Canada and became the Billboard Hot 100 number one single of the year, a prestigious title to have. The second single from the album, “Too Bad”, also did very well.

Over the next few years, the band had great luck, releasing two more albums. Their main issues were with their drummers, first Brandon was replaced by Michael Guindon, who was replaced by Ryan Vikedal, a friend of Ryan Peake (Nickelback´s lead guitarist). Finally, in 2005, Vikedal was replaced by Daniel Adair who is still the drummer currently.

Interesting Nickelback Trivia
The band got its name from something Mike Kroeger used to say frequently when handing change to his customers while working at Starbucks,”Here´s your nickel back.”

While the lead singer, guitarist and bass player remain the same, the band has gone through at least four drummers. Ryan Vikedal, the drummer before current musician Daniel Adair, claims he was forced out of the band.
Chad Kroeger, lead singer and rhythme guitarist for the band, performed “Hero”, the Spiderman theme song along with Josey Scott.

If you download music videos of the hit Nickelback song of “Someday”, you can see the production crew walking around in the background of the video.

The song “Figured You Out” was placed on the list of Top 100 Worst Love Songs, compiled by VH1 . . . despite the fact that it´s not even a love song, but only discusses the involvement of love.

Nickelback songs have been used in several big movies, including The Scorpion King (“Yanking My Heart Out”) and Daredevil (“Learn the Hard Way”).

Silver Side Up was an extremely popular album, but not necessarily in the expected countries. While it went five times platinum in the US, the album went double platinum in Australia of all places. Incidentally, their music video for “See You at the Show” was filmed in Australia. They are particularly popular with the Aussies, it seems . . . the album, The Long Road, hit triple platinum in the same country.

Nickelback has had its fair share of problems with finding a drummer to stick around and was off to a rough start at the beginning. Nowadays, though, their music videos and albums are more popular than ever and they have a worldwide audience . . . not bad for a bunch of Canucks!
