Covington Rotary Club Collecting New Shoes for Orphans

Covington, LA – A simple pair of children’s shoes may not look powerful, but they can make a big difference in the lives of orphans around the world.

The Covington Rotary Club, as part of Rotary District 6840, is teaming up with Buckner International to ask local residents to collect shoes for children in need. The annual nationwide “Shoes for Orphan Souls” shoe drive is seeking to collect more than 250,000 pairs of new shoes, socks and shoestrings, with a nationwide campaign. Since 1999, Buckner has sent more than 2.2 million pairs of new shoes to vulnerable children in 74 countries around the globe, including the United States.

“We have seen the smiles that a new pair of shoes brings to children in the orphanages we visit, and we want to extend that same joy to others like them,” said Rachel Garton, director of Shoes for Orphan Souls. “Because ofRotary’s commitment to this program, we can continue to increase the number of kids who will benefit.”

“Millions of children reside in orphanages throughout our world,” Garton said, “and those orphanages are not receiving enough money to care for the children’s most basic needs, like shoes and socks.”

An unexpected benefit of donating new shoes is the sense of satisfaction on the part of the person who gives. “At Buckner, we say new shoes are good for the soul – yours and theirs,” Garton said. “A person who gives can’t help but feel as though they also have received a great gift.”

Only BRAND NEW shoes, socks, and shoelaces can be donated due to customs regulations. Donated items should be in children and teen shoe sizes.

Garton emphasized no donation is too small. “Most of the donations to the shoe drive have come from families giving one or two pairs of shoes. Every one pair of shoes makes a big difference to the child that receives them.”

I am pleased to share the 2010-11 Rotary International and Rotary Foundation Annual Report.

Rotary’s annual report offers a firsthand look at how Rotarians are responding to a range of needs, with support from RI and its Foundation. The report also highlights the generosity of Rotarians to The Rotary Foundation and to Rotary’s top priority of global polio eradication. For those who would like a more detailed look at Rotary finances, the audited financial statements are available for download.

I am also pleased to announce that we have developed a website for the report that incorporates video and other resources not available in the print edition. This new website debuts in all Rotary languages on 13 January, before the start of the 2012 International Assembly. As a result, we are able to eliminate an expensive international mailing of the report and replace it with an email message to all Rotary club presidents and district governors that directs them to the site.

As a Rotary senior leader, coordinator, or committee member, please share our annual report with other Rotarians, as well as anyone who may be interested in joining, partnering with, or donating to Rotary. Encourage people to visit www.rotary.org/en/annualreport after 13 January, or order additional print copies atshop.rotary.org to distribute at your Rotary club.

Having just completed six months as your new general secretary, I appreciate all that Rotary accomplished last year. Covington Rotarians with chef Bob Haeuser, on loan from the Metairie Rotary Club, won 2nd place in the Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club’s 8th Annual Chili Cook-Off. The weather was beautiful and we had a great time prepping and serving Bob’s award-winning chili.
Our booth decorations didn’t yield us a prize, but were a big hit with the many Rotarians from the Lake District and beyond who participated in or attended the event. We were able to let the crowd know what Covington Rotary and Rotary International are all about.

Rotary welcomes hospital executives

The Covington Rotary hosted executives from Lakeview Regional Medical Center as guest speakers at a recent meeting at Dakota Restaurant. The hospital earned the Business of the Year title by the St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce. Lakeview Regional Medical Center CEO Jason Cobb explained the resources available at the hospital, saying the facility holds 172 beds, employs 800 people along with 323 active staff members in order to provide acute expertise in all fields of health care with the latest development being the $5 million Lakeview Regional Heart Center. Administer of Support Services John Gerhold said the hospital offers the first and only cardiac MRI on the Gulf Coast. Marketing director Kim Melvin added that the H2U Senior volunteers earned $34,000 to benefit hospital-sponsored programs. The Covington Rotary Club welcomed District Governor District 6840 Betty Gill to the Oct. 11 meeting held at Dakota Restaurant. Gill, a Rotarian of 22 years stopped in Covington on her District- wide tour of some 155 clubs. She reaches 2,379 Rotarians within the district encompassing both southeastern Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana. Gill challenged each Rotarian to act upon her governing theme: Reach Within and Embrace Humanity. Rotary begins new vision

The Covington Rotary welcomed guest speaker Rich Churchman, District 6200 Director and Assistant Rotary Regional Co-coordinator to speak on the Rotary Foundation projects. The 100-year old Foundation is now venturing on its Future Vision project to continue Rotary International’s goal of eradicating polio around the world. Global grants will now prompt Rotary to work on community development, water, polio, sanitation and maternal and child health. To date, only four countries still experience polio; those are Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Nigeria.
