Coyote Creek Organic Honeybee Feed?!

Maybe you’ve seen a few honeybees around your feeders recently. Maybe even enough to cause some concern for your (and your chickens’) health. What’s the deal? Honeybees are supposed to be hibernating this time of year, right? Well, sort of.

Honeybees don’t actually hibernate, they just quit leaving the nest once the temperature drops below 50 degrees or so. That makes sense - in the wintertime there aren’t too many flowers blooming. But what do the bees do? Where do they go? Well, they do what we do: bundle up, eat comfort foods, and wait for spring. Bees cluster around their queen and shiver, raising the temperature inside the beehive to around 80 degrees. All that shivering is costly - to the tune of around 30 pounds of honey each winter. It makes sense, then, that when the weather warms up a bit and there’s a possibility of finding something fresh to eat, the bees take to the skies and to whatever sweet treat they can find.

Warm temperatures might trick the honeybees into leaving the nest, but they won’t trick the bluebonnets into blooming in February. As far as a honeybee is concerned, mid-winter is a food desert - no flowers to be found. But do you know what’ll do in a pinch? A feeder full of certified organic chicken feed from Coyote Creek! Corn is the ingredient which supplies the calories in most of our rations, and honeybees like corn sugar almost as much as chickens do. It’s no wonder, then, that your feeders are swarmed with honeybees this winter.

What to do about bees in your bonnet, I mean feeder, you ask? Your best bet is to try and determine where the beehive is and “head them off at the pass.” Grab a seat and observe the bees. Where are they coming from? Bees generally fly in a straight line from their hive to the food. Once you’ve determined the direction they’re coming from, put out a bowl of sugar water in between the hive and your feeders. Plant a winter flower garden too! Maybe do a bee dance for them? When you’re hungry, you’ve got two basic choices. Do you go for something quick that’ll fill you up, refuel you for another four hours, get-it-and-go-I’m-too-busy-to-slow-down, or do you look for something that’s a bit more like recharging instead of refueling? Something which makes you feel good, and also feel good about having eaten there. Tortuga Flats in Round Rock lies squarely in the second camp. Built by two Texans named Tre and Octavio, Tortuga Flats started as a food truck and now occupies an almost paradoxical location of calm and tranquility in the shadow of the sea of concrete and steel that is the Interstate 35/Texas Highway 45 interchange in Round Rock. Billed as a twist on the traditional Mexican Icehouse, its owners drew inspiration from Steinbeck’s Tortilla Flat, a story essentially about friends enjoying each others company, as well as the childhood Tre and Octavio spent scrambling through Brushy Creek hunting for turtles. The result is a friendly, welcoming, and celebratory environment where you can meet friends up for a margarita and a killer enchilada.

The food is, in a word, fantastic. Tre and Octavio clearly use food as a means of self-expression, which requires that care be taken in the choice of ingredients. Tortuga Flats seeks out locally sourced vegetables, eggs, and humanely raised meat whenever possible, and you can taste the difference. Whether it’s chicken tortilla soup with Texas sweet corn or enchiladas Tejanas with beef brisket, topped with a Coyote Creek egg, the result is something distinctly different from your run-of-the-mill TexMex “combination #1” plate.

Elgin, Texas Company Buys Land in Forsyth for Organic Egg Farm

FORSYTH, Ga. — Organic agriculture in Georgia took a step forward this week, with the acquisition of an 88-acre farm in Forsyth, Monroe County. The land will be converted into an organic pastured poultry farm by World’s Best Eggs of Georgia, a division of Coyote Creek Organic Feed Mill and Farm, of Elgin, Texas.

“We are excited to expand into Georgia, where there is a tremendous demand for organic food and a growing organic community,” said Cameron Molberg, chief executive officer of Coyote Creek Organic Feed Mill and Farm. “The Forsyth and Central Georgia community has been very welcoming, and we can’t wait to get our farm up and running.”

The land is located on Georgia Highway 83 North, and will include pasture land for the hens who will spend their time outside, eating grass, bugs, and organic feed while producing nutrient-dense and delicious eggs. The eggs will be sold under the label Jeremiah Cunningham’s World’s Best Eggs at Whole Foods Market stores in the South.

World’s Best Eggs of Georgia will employ 11 people when it is fully operational next year. The land will also include an organic feed mill, which will employ 12 people when fully operational.

“We are excited that Coyote Creek Farms selected Monroe County as the next location for its World’s Best Eggs operation,” said Tiffany Andrews, executive director of the Development Authority of Monroe County.

“The farm and mill will complement Monroe County’s existing agriculture base as well as provide good paying jobs in our community,” said Butch Copelan, chairman of the Development Authority of Monroe County. We look forward to it becoming an asset for family farmers in our area and throughout the South. We are proud to have it in Monroe County.”

Happy Thanksgiving!

2014 has been a great year for Coyote Creek, and we’re thankful to the folks who are committed to supporting organic agriculture. When buying organic products, you help to guarantee the success of organic, chemical-free farms; ensure clean soil, air, and waterways; and promote good health for farmers, farmhands, and consumers alike!

This year, Coyote Creek Organic Feed Mill and Farm passed several significant milestones: we expanded our feed offerings to include pelleted feeds, we grew our laying flock to help meet the growing demand for pasture-raised organic eggs, and we raised our first batch of organic-fed turkeys for Wheatsville Food Coop in Austin! Our partnership with Wheatsville started in 2012, when we delivered our first case of Jeremiah Cunningham’s World’s Best Eggs. Since then, they’ve been a steadfast advocate for our certified-organic, pasture-raised eggs, so when they asked us to raise turkeys for their Thanksgiving, we jumped at the chance. Have you gone to your favorite grocery store in search of a carton of Jeremiah Cunningham’s World’s Best Eggs only to find an empty shelf instead? A small decrease in production is normal during winter months due to seasonal changes such as the shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures. Unfortunately, we’ve experienced some extreme winter weather here in Central Texas much earlier than normal.

Over the past few weeks we have seen two harsh cold and wet spells that made egg production drop even more than it normally does with winter weather. Some of our hens took a brief break from producing eggs, but they are back in business! They are ready to take on whatever weather comes their way now, but the grocery shelves may be a little bare for the next few weeks.

New egg to sell at Whole Foods Market Southwest Region.

Elgin, Texas (February 7, 2012) – Jeremiah Cunningham’s World’s Best Eggs today announces that they have begun producing organic soy-free eggs for sale to Whole Foods Market Southwest Region.

The demand for the eggs comes from the rising concern among food scientists and medical professionals about the carcinogenic influence from too much soy in the American diet. Some claim soy may cause or contribute to the growth of cancer in some individuals. In 2008, Cornell University’s Program of Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors warned women who are at risk for breast cancer to limit their soy intake.

Other concerns are that soy allergies have been on a steady rise over the past three years, and the proteins in eggs are typically derived from soy-based feeds for laying hens. Though the effects typically diminish, consumers with severe soy allergies prefer to avoid soy altogether.

With 80% of all grocery items now containing soy and soy by-products, Jeremiah Cunningham’s World’s Best Eggs has created an egg that allows consumers to avoid the over-consumption of soy.
