Hi William, Your great grandfather, Major was a very complicated man. He had a large heart for children but yet could be all business. I remember some very special, cute times that he & I spent, although only a few. He loved to fish and loved to work. He was very smart at making a business work, although he was not always successful. Major was a charming and successful man who attracted women. His wives were his best friends. He had other acquaintances but few were trustworthy friends. No he wasn’t perfect but he left a legacy during an exciting and glamorous era.

Norma Riddle was a wonderful lady, very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was kind to everyone she met and loved by everyone I knew. She did everything she could to support her husband Major Riddle including caring for his mother, Susie Riddle for several years prior to her death. Norma & Susie had become very close over the years. Norma also cared for 4 of Major’s Grandchildren for several years when they needed a home. She did the best she could. Yes she was an alcoholic but she was self-sacrificing to help others. Comments that were made regarding affairs of Major with Norma or Virginia Hill are unsubstantiated, and only allegations made out of spite toward me by a granddaughter that my mother, Norma Riddle, took into her home. This message is for the dispiteful debra, who part of her story was correct about major being very helpful to the community and part of the story on how he got started, but her slander has gone overboard. How dare you slander Norma Riddle as she was the sweetest most caring person I’ve ever known. Your grandmother was no saint as were none of majors wives. He lived on the wild side and he attracted wild woman.Do you even reallize how many times he was married. He brought on the infedelity, dont blame any of the wives or even girlfriends. If you want to tell the truth on history, why dont you tell the story that I heard that debra, majors granddaughter stole all of major riddles daughter nancy’s money and she has continually stolen from whats left of the riddle estate with her personal lawyer fees. Everyone of her family members including her daughter would have some inheritance if it weren’t for her greed and a few others. This author wants to hear facts not your personal quirks with the Norma Riddles family, and your theory on whether it was Norma or Virginia. I’ve heard both were there before. You don’t realize major riddles story didn’t die when he died, as it still continues. Every adult at the time of his death stole from every child under 18 at the time and every unborn greatgrandchild, by changing majors will, with your family settlement agreement that gave all adults a larger share than the minor grandchildren and great grandchildren. The adult grandchildren including debra gave theirselves a higher share than minor grandchildren. Absolutely disgusting what the adults did to the children. Also I heard his last wife Marion stole from the family and had to sign away her rights to anything else. All this is part of major riddles history and is heard through stories and online research, so these stories are not my opinion, just part of his saga, maybe fact or fiction.

I too majorly disliked the inclusion of an alleged safety issue — it’s well known that LGBT folk have faced and still face violent persecution (I’ve been gay-bashed twice personally) but there’s a recent trend among the LGBT-persecutors to invent fantasies of possible violence against themselves. The LGBT-haters are so unaccustomed to any public opposition that they are now delusional about being a persecuted and abused minority. You look cross-eyed at homophobes and they holler “HATRED!!!” “INTOLERANCE!!!” “PREJUDICE!!!” “BIGOT!!!”. I have heard of no real physical violence against homophobes anywhere.

I don’t think anyone is advocating hating that I’ve heard of. The angel protests are essentially a version of what you’re suggesting. I think your suggestion might be a bit impractical – flowers are expensive. It would be asking a lot of floral companies to ask for donations. I think there are peaceful ways to handle dealing with them – specifically holding a conversation as I plan to is one, as is people passing out flyers explaining the various churches on site and what “open and affirming” means.

Actually, the churches that don’t hate us ARE trying to do that – they have been working very hard to expose these two churches that they feel are trying to convert LGBT people, and to help the Pride celebration organizers and the community know what those churches might be about, and asking people to investigate further. We all owe them our thanks for asking questions and raising the issue.

Thom – please consider coming to the Pride celebration. This problem with these two churches really will not change the entire tone of the festival. The festival has 300 some booths and thousands upon thousands of people. It is a HUGE festival, and these two churches have two small booths. The reason it’s important to make it clear what these two churches are doing is to help the LBGT community in case they come in contact with them. When LGBT folks come out, so often they are not just seeing themselves differently, but are losing their spiritual anchor as well, because so many churches are unaccepting. So it they are visiting the churches at Pride, it’s important that they know who they are talking to. The churches who do come to Pride should be open and accepting of LGBT people just as they are – and most churches are that way. We just want to clarify what these two churches are about.

The First Amendment about free speech applies ONLY to government entities. Indy Pride is NOT a government entity. You are no more required to allow vacuum-cleaner salesmen in your front room than IndyPride is required to allow anti-gay preachers inside their events!

I ran into both of these churches last year during my short visit to Pride (I had to work second shift)

Not everyone was nasty, but they were very very very pushy. One came clean across the walk to confront me and my sins. Now, having been a VBS camp counsellor in my past, I can talk bible with the best of them, but I didn’t go to Pride to get told how the wages of sin are death.. Because.. those are the same wages that righteousness earns. We all die, and I don’t think it’s wrong to want one single day of the year that I’m not getting shitty looks and comments

Defend the First amendment, defend free speech. Let them set up outside the Pride space and torment people on the way in and out like the 6 protesters and their signs do.

I like the idea of the angel protest, but might I suggest that the churches who are going to be there that don’t HATE us for existing come over and police their faith?

I am not an Indianapolis resident, but have been to your fair city many many times. I wanted to go to your Pride this year and planned to be there. Not anymore. I am nauseous. In this case, the first amendment only applies to free speech, which no one wants to restrict. But the first amendment doesn’t apply to them having booth space in the festival event – that’s something they have to apply for. The Pride Celebration organizers have the right to pick and choose who is allowed to have booth space in the venue, because they are the ones with the permits for the space. The organizers can say “sorry; you don’t fit our mission” and refuse to allow them. Groups have to meet certain criteria for admission, and they can be refused if they don’t. Specifically, the only criteria that the celebration is setting right now is that booths have to pay them. If someone doesn’t pay the fee, they’re out. They can add criteria to those requirements about core beliefs and meeting a certain set of values.

Years ago there was a fitness center in Irvington Plaza on the eastside (called Nautilus?) and if I recall correctly there was a large Atlas-type figure on their roof. The building I believe is now a flea market. My father worked at the Kroger store in the plaza which is now a DAV thrift store.

I picked up Paper Towns at Indy Reads first when they recommend Green – they had a big section of his books that were signed. So I think my copy is signed… Anyway, they were raving about him. But when our friend Katie picked ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ for book club, I didn’t even register that he was the same guy. And then Stephanie pointed out that she had picked up ‘Looking for Alaska’ in my company book sale a couple years ago, so we’ve had his books on our shelves quite awhile.

I’ve read Paper Towns and really enjoyed it. The funny thing is the way I found out about the book. I read on a website that it explained the criptic song on the Twilight soundtrack, “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” by Iron & Wine. I’m not sure it really lived up to that, but it revealed some good insights about the way we think of ourselves and other people.

so it won’t have permanent seats – maybe he could get a deal on the seats that are being sold from the old Bush Stadium that was torn down how many years ago? and now is being recycled…

and why do i have a feeling it’s gonna be a stadium that we’ll be paying for long after it’s torn down, like the Hoosier Dome, where the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts once played?

if we have all this money sitting around (which i doubt we do), why don’t we spruce up the Natatorium to bring Olympic level events here – they don’t even want to come here any more. Swimming is a much more popular sport than cricket in the US. Or perhaps we could connect the bike lanes that are popping up around the city – a very noble cause, but it seems silly to have them suddenly stop for a mile or two and then start again – if they were more consistent, perhaps motorists would realize they’re legitimate.

Norma Fulmer, this message is for you…we were girlfriends at Hyde Park Jr. High. Do you remember the day about 10 of us girls decided to “ditch” school? Of course we were found out! My parents were furious with me because my dad was a bartender in the lounge of the Dunes and they were certain that he would lose his job over the incident. Well, of course he did not lose his job. Your daddy was very kind and a great business man. I moved away, back to Chicago and lost touch with you. I have often wondered where you are and hope that your life has been good. Your bedroom was decorated so beautifully and the white carpeting in your living room must have been 3 inches thick. In my first home, I put the identical carpet in my living room.
