It was early summer. The call came in from a grandmother whose great grandchild was going to be aborted. She lived in South Carolina, our center was located in North Carolina. ‘I need to bring my granddaughter there but I don’t have gas money to come and return. ‘

The receptionist told her ‘you get her here and we will give you a gas card. ‘ She arrived later that morning as a walk in and our sonographer showed her the life inside the womb. The young lady was still abortion determined when she left our setting. We gave her a $25 gas card as promised and they returned home.

We did not hear anything for months and assumed our efforts to save a life were in vain. However in late January of the next year, this excited voice on the other end of the line declared, “I just called to tell you that I have a great grandson born yesterday. I don’t know if you all remember me but I brought her there last June for an appointment and you gave me gas to return home. Thank you for saving by great grandbaby’s life.”

For the last 17 years our baby bottle blessing campaign has yielded great response and the average bottle totals $28.00. We were able to save a life by giving a gas card. Thanks for giving those $28 dollar gifts.

The night of the Walk, the total amount raised was $61,603.31. Now 2 weeks later, the newest updated total is $71,294.33. Amazing! God is continuing to work the Walk. Below is one more story, one more of those priceless gifts He bestowed upon the newest member of the staff during the Walk: *The day started as I drove up into the driveway of CPC-Main. My breath was taken away by the awesomeness of the field with the pink and blue flags, the walking track, the crosses, the luminary bags. It was 7:30 am in the morning. I usually come early to do a Bible study before the day begins. It was so exciting to already see people there working, preparing and actually see someone already walking the track praying. My first thought: I missed it! I didn’t help them put it together and it looks so beautiful! Gathering my things, I hurry to go inside and prepare for the day to be ready for the morning prayers, thinking I haven’t done my Bible study yet and I don’t have a word for today! After morning prayers, work started early. Ultrasound appointments were there early. It was going to be a busy day! Each and every woman who walks through those doors are in a state of crisis. And all you can do is pray that God will give you wisdom to help each individual person. As the day progressed, it just seemed that everything was getting tighter: clients back-to-back, no time for lunch. I remember sitting there for just a brief moment thinking everyone’s outside celebrating and I’m stuck in here! Even my husband had arrived and I couldn’t even go out and spend time with him!And then a cancellation and I remember thinking “Thank you God. I really want to go outside and play! Celebrate and pray for the babies!” But just a few minutes after the cancellation I got the word from Meg that there was an abortion-minded mother who was scheduled for next week but they wanted to get her in if we had a cancellation. Meg had already booked the appointment. My heart sank and I thought I’m not even caught up on my charting and I’m still learning. I just gotta get it together! And within a few minutes, the girl was there early! And then my heart grips me with fear and anxiety. I began to pray and I repent immediately and ask God for forgiveness because here’s another baby, a child that a mother is thinking about murdering and she doesn’t even know that she’s doing it because it’s not taught that way in our world. In this society, it’s just a piece of tissue. She has no idea she’s contemplating to crush the heart of her only child, to stamp out its life in a heartbeat. And now it’s time – the warfare begins. A spiritual warfare that you cannot understand unless you are standing against evil. Against invisible things in high places! Who’s to say this baby isn’t going to be the next Billy Graham or Sister Teresa! Tears are coming to my eyes. Only God knows. After what seemed an endless time of prayer and double teaming with Leslie and prayers and more prayers, you could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit and God moving as another mother decides to keep her child. And prayed to rededicate her life! When the client final left, it was 3 o’clock. I was thinking it’s my birthday today, it’s my anniversary, my husband is outside! I quickly got changed, took my husband to town to pick up his birthday present, came back and immediately started working the front entrance to the track! Miss Kay Lord was explaining what all the flags meant, what the crosses meant and what the luminaries meant and my heart welled up. I thought “I didn’t even think of that”. I want to go get a hot dog because I had not eaten. So I went and got a Nathan’s chili double slaw dog – enjoying the people and the festivities and the celebration. Then, as I was walking back to the entrance of the track, a song by Keri Jobe, The Blessing, was on. I absolutely love that song and I started singing Amen! Amen! Amen!As I crossed the walking path to get to the first aid station, I stepped on the track and all of the sudden the Holy Spirit came over me and tears of brokenness began to flow down my cheeks as I realized that my twin grandbabies were in heaven because their mother had chosen to abort them just last year. My heart is breaking and then all of a sudden I heard the words to the song and it was saying “your children and their children” and I knew God was telling me, “Your grandbabies are here with me!” INSTANTLY I wondered if they could see me and the work I do and do they know I love them!! And that I fought for them. I cried and prayed for them, begging in my heart that their mother would choose life! I wanted to hold them so badly and the tears were painful. (I’m crying right now even thinking about it as I write this.) And I had to stop. I couldn’t walk. I just had to stop and listen to the song, standing in the track. People were walking past me. God just gripped my heart and said, “They know you love them. They see you and they’re proud of their grandma!”Then I heard the Holy Spirit say, “You got one today!” It was an overwhelming sense of power and light and presence surrounding me as I continued to walk along the track and I knew that we here at the CPC Walk on Holy Ground. And we all sing together: “Our God is an awesome God.He reigns from heaven abovewith wisdom, power and love. Our God is an awesome God.” And He said: “Just watch Me work!”

OLDEST
BIBLICAL LITERATURE

Job
1:21 “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and
naked I will depart. The Lord gave
and the Lord has taken away; may
the name of the Lord be praised.”

Job 10:8-13” Your
hands shaped me and made me. Will
you now turn and destroy me?
Remember
that you molded me like clay. Will
you now turn me to dust again? Did you not pour me out
like milk and curdle me like
cheese, clothe me with skin and flesh and knit me together with bones and
sinews? You gave
me life and showed me kindness, and in your
providence watched over my spirit. “But this
is what you concealed in your heart, and I know that this was in your mind:

Job 33:6 I am the same
as you in God’s sight; I too
am a piece of clay.

TORAH

Genesis 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our
likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the
fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God
created man in his own image, in the image of God created he
him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the
dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man
became a living soul.

Genesis 5:1-3 This is the
book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the
likeness of God made he him; male and female
created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when
they were created. And Adam lived an hundred and thirty
years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image;
and called his name Seth:

Genesis 9:5-6 And
surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will
I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I
require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man’s
blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he
man. And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring
forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

Genesis
25:21 “And
Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was
intreated of him, and Rebecca his wife conceived.”

Genesis 25:23 “two
nations are in thy womb” (Jacob and Esau) “and two manner of
people.”

Genesis
33:5 “The
children which God has graciously given me.”

Exodus 4:11 So the Lord said
to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the
seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord?

Exodus
20:13 “Thou shalt not kill.”

Exodus 21:22-23 If men strive, and hurt a woman with
child, so that her fruit depart from
her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according
as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And
if any mischief
follow, then thou shalt give life for life,

Exodus 22:22-23 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or
fatherless child. If thou afflict them in any
wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; …

Exodus 23:7
“Keep far from false charge, and do not slay the innocent and
righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked.”

Deuteronomy 24:17 Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice

Deuteronomy 30:15-20 See, I have set before thee this day
life and good, and death and evil; in that I command
thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in
his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that
thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy
God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. But
if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away,
and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce
unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan
to go to possess it. I call heaven and earth to
record this day against you, that I
have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose
life, that both thou and thy seed may live: that
thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his
voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy
life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which
the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to
Jacob, to give them.

Deuteronomy 32:19 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me:
I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver
out of my hand.

Deuteronomy 32:39 ‘Now see that I, even I, am He,
And there is no God besides Me;

2
Kings 17:16-20 “And they forsook all the commandments
of the Lord their God…. And they burned their sons and daughters as
offerings….Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of His
sight.”

Matthew 18:10 KJV Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say
unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father

Matthew 19:13-14 Then
people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on
them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.

said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for
the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 When
he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

Luke 1:15 “He will be filled with the Holy

Luke

the hill country of Judea, 40 where

baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed
are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother
of my Lord should come to me? 44 As
soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped
for joy. 45 Blessed is she
who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Luke
2:21 “And at the end of eight days, when He
was circumcised, He was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was
conceived in the womb.”

Luke 12:7 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all
numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Luke
18:15-16 “Now they were bringing even infants to
Him that He might touch them, and when the disciples saw it, they rebuked
them. But Jesus called them to Him
saying, ‘Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such
belongs the kingdom of God.'”

John
9:1-3 “As He passed by, He saw a man blind
from his birth, and His disciples asked Him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or

Jesus answered, ‘It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but
that the works of God might be made manifest in him.'”

John 10:10 10 The thief
comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have
life, and have it to the full.

John
16:21 “When a woman is in travail she has
sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she
no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is brought into the

New

Acts

the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and
does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And
he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself
gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made all the nations, that
they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in
history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God
did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find
him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For

body.”

Galatians

2:17 “Therefore, He had to be made like His
brethren in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high

James

So this year, our Walk for Life was a little bit different. But different is not a bad thing. In fact, this year, not only was our final total amount raised more than any previous year – $61,603.31, but we as a staff were witness to God working the Walk Himself. As He worked, He blessed us with priceless gifts that looked like this when we unwrapped them:

*A lady stopped by Friday during the Walk to ask about what we were doing. After hearing about CPC and what we do here, she asked if she could come back Saturday to pray for us. As Dr. Overbey arrived Saturday to bring some signs back, he saw this lady sitting in her car with her well-worn Bible praying the Scriptures over CPC and the flags and crosses that grace the front lawn.

*A gentleman arrived early Friday morning to walk and pray for the many babies represented by the flags and crosses. After a while, as he was leaving, a staff member thanked him for coming. His reply: “I have to go and work for a little bit, but I’ll be back soon to pray some more.” True to his word, he returned and went straight to the track.

*In previous years, we have had to depend on many volunteers, a lot of them youth from area schools and churches, to help with the Walk. This year, because of the different set-up, volunteers weren’t as needed as before. What a joy to see that many of those same youth still showed up Friday – not to volunteer but to pray!

*One staff member was so excited when she saw a young couple helping out with the snow cones that she had noticed walking earlier. She went up to meet them and was pleased to learn that they are previous clients who are now expecting again. In talking with this couple, the staff member was joyfully reminded by them of how CPC had helped them come to know Christ as well as provide for their children’s needs. (The client had come through the curbside service Thursday, saw the preparations for the Walk and asked if she could come help out Friday.)

*Sitting at the registration table near the entrance to the parking lot, one staff was amazed at how many people stopped by just to see what was going on. They were so intrigued as they rode past that they had to stop. Many donated but none touched the folks at the registration desk as much as the young girl who insisted her mother turn around and bring her back once her mother explained what was going on. What this sweet young girl did next was nothing short of awesome. She handed over all of her birthday money that she had just received to help save the babies.

*With COVID bringing uncertainity along with the new look of our Walk for Life, there was a lot of apprehension as Friday approached. One staff member was especially concerned. But God, in His faithfulness and lovingkindness, gently spoke to her. He simply said to her “Just watch Me work”. And that she did – all day Friday. If you were here, you got to experience it as well.
And we all sing together:

“Our God is an awesome God.He reigns from heaven abovewith wisdom, power and love. Our God is an awesome God.”

Friday night after the Walk, the total amount raised was $61,603.31. Now a week later, the newest updated total is $65,122.31. Two weeks later the total is at $70,164.67. God is continuing to work the Walk. Earlier this week we shared with you some of the special gifts God gave the staff during the Walk. Here are some more of those priceless gifts He bestowed upon the staff during the Walk:

*One staff member was here walking with her mother and her child. That may not seem so unusual or special to you but what they talked about as they walked around the track was. This staff member was once a client here and she came wanting an abortion. She found out about CPC a few years ago through her mother, who also came to CPC wanting an abortion when she was pregnant with the staff member. What an awesome testimony to have all three generations walking the track together when it came so close to stopping with that first generation. What a sweet gift to hear the words “So I thank you for what CPC does and for being here for both me and my mom.”

*As one staff member stood by the entrance to the track, he heard a small boy ask a question about all the flags. The boy asked, in his own sweet words, what would happen to all the babies represented by the flags if nothing was done. He wanted to know if they would die. To hear the concern in this child’s voice for these babies was almost more that the staff member could comprehend. The staff member was thankful that another staff member also heard the little boy’s questions and stooped down to truthfully answer him in a caring and loving way.
*There was a woman here with her 3 children. She is currently homeless and staying in a shelter. She started going to Elevation Church recently and heard about the Walk. She wanted to come. As a staff member talked with her, she found out that this woman was a previous client of CPC. What touched the staff member so much is that, even in this woman’s circumstances in which she probably had nothing to give, she still came to walk and pray. And she taught her children about the sanctity of life!

*During the Walk, CPC still served clients curbside. One staff member floated between working the Walk and helping with the curbside clients. As she was helping curbside, she noticed a staff member and a volunteer praying for someone who had called in wanting an abortion. It occurred to her as she witnessed them praying that this was why we walk…to intercede for the pre-born and care for our clients. This, she says, exemplifies the feeling she had all day of the Peace of God enveloping the entire property here at CPC.
*We’ve mentioned how children touched us during the Walk. But the overall echo of those staff and board members who have young children of their own is how their children had the best time making and playing with new friends while at the Walk. It seems they didn’t miss the usual entertainment at all. The opportunity for teachable moments to explain the beauty of all life, both born and unborn, were readily embraced as well. What a great time for building up family and friends!
And we all sing together:

“Our God is an awesome God.He reigns from heaven abovewith wisdom, power and love. Our God is an awesome God.”

Why do you give here?

You see the Kingdom of God in action and at work here. Taking care of widows, orphans, the poor, the helpless, sharing the good news of Jesus and people accepting the Gospel. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. James 1:27

You see that the seed you are sowing is bearing fruit. You want to sow seed into fertile soil. Seed that will bear fruit. God does that here. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Luke 8:8

You give because we give. In 2016 we gave away all of our summer baby clothing to a CPC in Lousiana. In 2017 we gave away all of our winter clothing to a mission in W.Va. In 2018 our building is now overflowing with supplies and the truck is loaded with stuff to bring in. We give $100’s of dollars worth of supplies per client because of God’s generosity through you. Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:38

You give because we prayise. Since Oct. 23, 2003, our mode of operandi is to add prayer to praise = prayise. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. I Thessalonians 5:18.

You give because we are debt free and good stewards. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. Romans 13:8.

It was 1997. My first year here as Director. It was early summer, this lady walks in distraught and inconsolable. She wanted to commit suicide. She had aborted her baby and this was the month the baby was due. We counseled with her, called the authorities, and as I tried to detain her with conversation in that long hallway there at our site on Union Road, she relayed her desperation, if only someone had told me what I was getting ready to do.

That was the birthing of the vision God gave me for the Place of Refuge. We were meeting people at their point of crisis, and making a difference. However, we needed a more holistic approach to taking care of individuals like this one. We needed a no excuses place, where needs of adolescent parenting, adoption, STD (now STI) testing and professional counseling could take place.

I searched the scriptures and had always been intrigued in my former 19 years as a pastor with the Old Testament Cities of Refuge. I found the passage in Joshua 20:1-9 and realized that was us. A place of refuge for those who had unintentionally harmed someone to run to. It would be a safe, non condemning, oasis of grace.

It was a journey, but 20 years later, we have that debt free facility, with adolescent parenting, STI testing, Lifeline Adoption and soon professional counseling. We have a Director in Julie Gottfried, a Board of Directors with Gary Beauchamp chair and members, Darlene Mitchell, Buddy Turner and Michelle Wilson.

With their own Mission Statement, their own budget, their own facility and now staffed, it’s time for me to let go and let God. I can’t wait to see where God takes “the house that God built”, (per Loren Fairfield) and the good God can do through those who love him and are the called according to his purpose. Keep them in your prayise.

Can a new thought experiment involving hypothetically joining the National Guard shed light on the abortion debate?

With most issues, there is a middle ground, somewhere Americans can agree to meet for a compromise. For example, capitalists and socialists do not have much in common as far as economics, but, in the United States, they can come together and both be mildly satisfied with an American economic system that combines a largely capitalist economy with certain redistributive policies favored by advocates of wealth equality. With abortion, there is little middle ground. One side must be right, and the other side must be wrong. Either you believe abortion constitutes killing or you do not.

To address the most polarizing issue of our time, we must first answer this question: Is a fetus a human life or not? If it isn’t a life, then this will be a brief discussion. However, if it is a life, we must then determine whether there are any circumstances where it becomes acceptable to take the life of another human being in order to fulfill a competing priority: like a woman’s interest in not carrying a fetus to term, at considerable effort and expense, if she prefers not to.

From conception, however, the fetus has a complete human genome and the potential to become an adult, autonomous human, should the fetus be left undisturbed to mature. Nobody else in the world will ever have the same DNA as any one fetus. After just three weeks, it has a heartbeat, often beating with a different blood type from that of the mother. At two months, the fetus can turn its head, frown, and hiccup. At 9-10 weeks, teeth and fingernails are beginning to develop. Whatever it is, it is definitely human. But is it alive?

People have created many ways to define life. Criteria favored by the pro-choice camp for determining whether the fetus is “alive” range from viability to higher standards such as the ability for the fetus to desire to continue living or to use language.

Viability, to start with, makes for a poor standard. Firstly, it is often difficult to tell how viable a fetus really is at a given time. Some are viable at sixteen weeks; others are not viable until twenty-four weeks. It all depends on the individual. However, the more fundamental claim that underlies this criterion is that a human being must be able to survive unaided in order to qualify as being alive. However, as we know from day-to-day living, this is not quite accurate.

Take a person on life support, for example. If you stab an elderly person on life support in the chest, you’d be charged with first-degree murder. There is no suggestion in our society that someone requiring dialysis and, therefore, unable to continue living completely on his own is any less a person than someone who is healthy and does not require frequent third-party assistance in order to continue living.

Higher standards such as the ability to use language or the desire to continue living are equally problematic. Many adults living with cognitive disabilities are unable to form coherent sentences or thoughts, and depressed people often lack a desire to want to live. Standards for life that include high degrees of cognitive function exclude many people we already consider part of our moral community such as people with mental disabilities.

Additionally, many of these more advanced criteria for life would exclude newborns and small children from protection. If someone argues that it is acceptable to kill a fetus because it does not display “higher order” human traits like cognitive abilities or self-sufficiency, by that logic, infanticide would also be justified.

The only claim that seems to make sense is that life begins at conception. The fetus has a full human genome and the capacity, if protected from interference such as being removed the womb, to become an adult human. After all, if a single-celled organism were found on Mars, newspaper headlines would read “Life Discovered on Mars.”

A related and interesting question posed in recent decades is this: Is the fetus entitled to nine months of a woman’s labor? This gets to the heart of balancing the interests of the mother and fetus, something courts have been attempting since before Roe v. Wade. Both the mother and fetus have interests that sometimes come into conflict with one another. A fetus has an interest in being born, and a reluctant mother may have an interest in not being inconvenienced by carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term.

The underlying presumption is that the mother is essentially a slave to the fetus inside of her. However, this is not true for one reason – consent.

The question implies that the mother is being held hostage against her will to the baby within her; however, the mother made the decision, a decision carrying intrinsic risks, to engage in sexual activity. Even if a couple takes the most extreme precautions to avoid pregnancy, there is always a chance, however small, that pregnancy can result from sexual intercourse. Think of it like this:

Let’s say you’re an American citizen and you decide to join the National Guard. You may benefit from this job by earning a salary, getting free healthcare, and getting tuition assistance. However, there is also the risk of being activated and sent to war – something you hoped would not happen when you joined the National Guard. Yet unfortunately, the United States gets entangled in a war, and you are forced to serve. Are you being forced to labor against your will? Well no, because by signing up, you understood the inherent risk, the possibility, however small, that you may be called upon to fight. In having sex, you understood the risks. Contraception is not foolproof. There is a chance, even if it is only a small one, that whenever you have sex you may become pregnant. When you have sex, you acknowledge this as a risk.

There are countless activities we do each day that carry a small risk of an unexpected turn of events.

This brings us to the final question of rape. When a woman is raped, she is not agreeing to the risks inherent in consensual sexual activity. Instead, these risks are violently forced upon her. The damage inflicted on women by rapists is often irreparable, and rapists should be punished beyond severely.

So should a woman be forced to labor for nine months if she did not make the decision to have sex voluntarily? For many that answer is no. However, it would be a tragedy to kill a child simply because of the circumstances surrounding its conception. The right to live should supersede the right for a woman not to be inconvenienced for the nine months of pregnancy. An interest in preserving life always outweighs other secondary interests like property or spending one’s time as one wishes.

Nearly a million abortions take place in the United States every year, and over 50 million occur worldwide. Decades from now, may we look back on abortion and realize its barbarity. Abortion will be listed beside slavery and ethnic genocide as among the greatest moral calamities in human history.
