ISH 2013 Trend Report

ISH 2013 - Day Three

We started the day at the Dornbracht stand. Although their Rainsky shower is not new for ISH, the fabulous display really brought this award-winning design to life.

We were impressed by Duravit’s new Durastyle collection by legendary Italian designer Matteo Thun. He was part of the influential Memphis group in the 1980’s which brought postmodern design into people’s homes, and is a former Creative Director of Swatch. Durastyle might be the antithesis of his early work, with its elegant simplicity of form. We think it will be a real winner in the UK market.

The British have some of the smallest bathrooms in Europe, and we have considerable experience designing space-saving solutions for customers. We use 2D and 3D visualisation tools to help, but we did admire new digital planning software with virtual reality walkthroughs – even if it did involve wearing an 80’s style headset.

More accessible technology can be found in the new ONO basin mixer, which features a digital thermometer. Using the waterproof LED display you can set the temperature simply and precisely. Every home should have one.

There is a definite trend towards digital control. Many new shower systems have abandoned traditional lever controls in favour of buttons or touch screens. The new Select range from Hansgrohe is one of the most appealing of the new wave. C.P. Hart have always championed the cutting-edge and the traditional with equal passion, so we’re a little torn by this trend. Could turning a tap a thing of the past?

ISH 2013 - Day Two

Snow in Frankfurt caused travel chaos on the first day of ISH 2013. Very un-Germanic. The C.P. Hart team finally managed to arrive at the show around midday on Day Two. Although we had only half a day to explore we saw great stands by Hansgrohe, Laufen and Bette.

Hansgrohe showed their new Axor ‘Organic’ brassware collection by Philippe Starck. It is safe to predict that this collection will be a huge seller, with its nature-inspired lines and wonderfully tactile shapes. We were also impressed with their innovative and funky new range of showers, called ‘Select’.

Swiss bathroom specialists Laufen launched the first fruits of their collaboration with uber-cool Italian designers Kartell. Our favourite piece was the basin with the wafer-thin rim. Immense skill is required to produce ceramics with such slim and perfect edges.

And for lovers of pink we spotted Bette's magnificent candy-pink oval bath. Install that in your bathroom and you could literally be 'in the pink'.

ISH 2013 - Day One

The C.P. Hart team were all set to bring you live updates from day one of ISH 2013, but due to the chaos of a snowstorm grounding all flights in and out of Frankfurt, the team were stuck at Heathrow most of yesterday. You’ll see why from the picture above!

If you’re not aware of ISH it provides the world’s biggest showcase for innovative bathroom design, energy efficient heating and air-conditioning technology and renewable energies.

Although the team couldn’t make it to day one, despite the 5am start at Heathrow, we did get a few reviews from friends at the show and by all accounts, those that did make it have been impressed by the trade shows architecture and the new products launched. One stand that’s earned some favourable mentions is Dornbracht. With the launch of ‘Smart Water’ and ‘Sensory Sky’ both available to view online at dornbracht.com.

We hope to see for ourselves on day two and will bring you live updates from Twitter, with of course an overview of each day here on the news feed.

Due to the recent snowfall causing a few early closures at our showrooms, we felt it only fair to extend our opening hours allowing you the opportunity to take advantage of up to 40% off in our winter sale.

Marcel Wanders at C.P. Hart

The day before Marcel Wanders launched his new hotel in Amsterdam may well have been a little nerve racking. Nevertheless, he flew to London, just for C.P. Hart. He arrived looking very cool, very tall, and resplendent in a hand-made leather cardigan and lime green plimsolls. He is a designer!

As the star guest at our November launch party, he unveiled his Wanders Collection for Bisazza Bagno. We think
it reflects Marcel himself:intelligent, original, unpredictable and, some might say, eccentric.

Our flagship showroom in SE1 has been called an “Aladdin’s cave” of bathroom room sets. It’s always evolving and if you think you have seen everything, please look again! 2012 saw two major refits in March and October. KBB Bathroom Design of the Year 2013

C.P. Hart are delighted to announce that Designer, Monita Cheung, has been selected as a finalist in the KBB Bathroom Design of the Year. The winner will be announced at the Design Awards presentation at London Hilton Park Lane, on 25th March 2013.

Monita continues her pedigree as an award winning designer, having previously finished runner up in the Homes & Gardens 2011 Designer Awards, and winning the Young Designer Award for Bathrooms (age 25 and under), at KBB 2010.

Independent Hotel 12 Overview

During October the C.P. Hart Contracts team exhibited at Independent Hotel 12, a major new event aimed at hotel owners and developers. Our stand was the largest and most inspirational at the whole exhibition. Most visitors to the stand were hoteliers, specifiers or designers drawn to the inspirational displays including exclusives like Hoxton, London & Hayon Diamante.

Overall Independent Hotel attracted 160 suppliers and brands spanning across categories including interior design, technology & software and health & wellness each taking the opportunity to showcase their products – many of whom had never exhibited at a hospitality trade event before.

Primrose Hill Showroom Opening

The Primrose Hill, Gloucester Avenue store officially opened its doors on Thursday, October 11th. Key newspaper and magazine journalists were invited to a showroom tour before local customers were invited to enjoy the evening event.

C.P. Hart are delighted to announce the launch of a new training academy at our flagship Waterloo showroom. As well as in-house session we're working in conjunction with some of Europe's leading bathroom manufacturers to develop product training through factory visits and in-depth sessions.

The instructive program has been devised to offer training from both a technical and an aesthetic point of view, and focuses on key areas such as sales, interior design and brand awareness. It consists of a three-tier syllabus covering Starter, Intermediate and Advanced learning.

On Thursday 15th March, C.P. Hart's Flagship Waterloo Showroom opened it's doors to celebrate C.P. Hart's 75th anniversary. The night also launched some fantastic new product collections including the Home Spa area.

The night had a magnificent turnout, with many suggesting it was the best C.P. Hart event ever. The evening included fizz and canapes on arrival, delicious drinks from the cocktail bar and dancing away to the brilliant swing band. And if that all got a bit to much guests were invited to relax with free spa treatments.

New products included the designer masterpieces of Jaime Hayon: Organico & Diamante, new brassware ranges from Gessi and Glass Design washbowls along with many others. The Home Spa area has been designed to showcase C.P. Hart's luxury shower, steam and sauna options.

C.P. Hart continued its commitment to the renowned Chelsea Harbour design school KLC, by hosting a tour of the Flagship Waterloo showroom on February 21st.

Presented by C.P. Hart Designer's Monita Cheung, the event revolved around a tour of the expansive Waterloo showroom, enabling the students to feel and experience the products, materials and styles and discuss current trends. The event received a great response from those who attended; all were inquisitive and keen to find out more about Monita experiences with particular products.

C.P. Hart are extremely supportive of anyone interested in design and aim to offer knowledge and guidance whenever possible to the next generation of designers.

The luxurious residential development overlooks the gardens of Hyde Park Square and will include one, two and three bedroom apartments, in addition to an exclusive penthouse. C.P. Hart will draw upon 75 years of experience in sourcing and designing cutting edge bathroom aesthetics to deliver tailored schemes especially for the Hyde Park Square development.

Hosted by Mr. George Clarke of Channel 4 programme ‘Restoration Man’, “The Northern Design Awards reinforce the region’s commitment to breathtaking design, cutting edge style and quality craftsmanship” remarks Event Manager Shelley Bond.

Judged by an expert panel including designers Sir Terence Conran and Wayne Hemingway as well as Suzanne Imre of Livingetc magazine, accolades were awarded to the finest architects, designers, retailers and trade from the area.

The Sleep Event

The Sleep Event at the Business Design Centre, London features the C.P. Hart Wetstyle bath - shown as part of the Kusch Design Team installation, a group of three designers aimed to create the sense of an outdoor space built within the home.

The Kusch team used low rectangular platforms set in a bed of smooth river stones as a foundation for the room, design elements within the space were carefully chosen to add texture, and interest creating a minimalistic, modern, and zen environment balanced with a sense of warmth and comfort.

Chiswick showroom

We are working hard on a brand new Traditional brassware brochure that will show case our exclusive range of traditional taps and fittings. This, we hope, will give customers a quick and easy reference tool to each of our exclusive classic ranges such as Empire, Arc, Waterloo and Original and really present what C.P. Hart has to offer.

As you can see, our Marketing team at head office are busy putting together brand new photography detailing every product, including technical drawings and specifications.

We have never before had a product brochure that lists all of our exclusive traditional ranges in one place, so this is a helpful project that we think will benefit everyone when selecting their bathroom products. We are looking to follow this up with an exclusive contemporary brochure later this year.

2011 KBB Review Awards - Special Achievement

John and Tom Hart, brothers and founders of leading bathroom retailer C.P. Hart, have been awarded the prestigious Special Achievement accolade at the 2011 KBB Review Awards. Hosted by KBB Review Editor Andrew Davies on Monday 17^th May, the award was presented to John and Tom Hart in front of a huge audience of industry professionals at Excel, London.

Awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the bathroom industry, the Special Achievement Award is presented to those who have made a massive contribution to the sector. C.P. Hart has been instrumental in driving the industry forward, changing perceptions about the role of a bathroom retailer by creating an inspirational but commercial business model which has enhanced the industry for the better.

John and Tom were singled out for this esteemed award due to their collective accomplishments whilst developing and cultivating C.P. Hart. The pair took over the business from their father Charles Percival Hart, acquiring multiple shops which traded in plumbing and hardware goods to sit alongside his already well established building company. The bathroom arm of the business evolved at an unprecedented rate and grew to become the company’s core proposition. C.P. Hart and Sons Ltd was founded in 1966 and was nurtured and developed by John and Tom who went on to definethe brand as a leading bathroom retailer. By the time C.P. Hart had relocated in 1974, underneath the arches in Waterloo, the business had generated an impressive reputation for design diversity, product availability and quality.

When John and Tom Hart handed over the business to Greg Hart in 1988, C.P. Hart had firmly established itself as the most influential specialist bathroom retailer in the UK.

Manchester showroom hosts bathroom installer event

C.P. Hart’s flagship store in Manchester opened its doors last week to host a specialist trade event in association with Hansgrohe, showcasing a range of products and services available to bathroom installers across the North West.

The event saw C.P. Hart welcome reputable bathroom installers from across the Greater Manchester area, giving them the unique opportunity to receive technical training in the showroom’s very own working wet room area. Attendees were also introduced to Hansgrohe’s new i-Range Shower and bath systems.

Paul Rowland, Managing Director of C.P.Hart, commented: “This trade event was a significant way to demonstrate the high quality products that C.P. Hart and Hansgrohe offer. Not only did we have the opportunity to showcase our services, but we received very positive feedback from industry professionals who will now go on to recommend us to their clients.”

A prize draw was held for attendees with lucky winner, Stuart Greenfield of Greenfield Plumbing Services, walking away with a Croma 100 Showerpipe worth Â£479. Stuart commented: “This event was really useful and I learnt quite a few new things from the technical demonstrations.

“From the outside a shower hasn’t changed for the past ten years but it’s important to keep up-to-date with the ever-changing technology as it gets more technical. I’d definitely attend events such as this in the future and I’d like to thank C.P. Hart and Hansgrohe for the event.”

Hart Sales Director, Adrian Smith, presented Macmillan with a cheque for Â£941.40. The money raised will pay for a week's support for someone diagnosed with cancer.

ISH Frankfurt - Trends review part two

Read the second review on the trends coming out of Europe's biggest bathroom exhibition, ISH 2011. From C.P. Hart Senior Designer, Hayley Tarrington.

"The trend we identified at the end of last year was the introduction of matt ceramics, with many more composite materials on the market the ceramic manufacturers need to come up with a solution that would complement this warmer, less reflective material, more suppliers were presenting examples of this.

Wood is still playing an important role in the bathroom, the trend has moved away from exaggerated grains or gloss finishes to a more organic natural appearance, timeless finishes, walnut and Oak, with the introduction of lighter washed woods with more texture and softer tones.

Products ‘green credentials’ are a real focus for many at the moment, most of the European manufactures have been incorporating these values in their products for many years, so the real challenge is creating beautiful products with an Eco conscience.

Grohe’s ‘Free flush’ 100ltr grey water-recycling system appeared a responsible yet achievable solution for domestic environments.

Furniture continues to grow in bathrooms, but the focus is now on functional storage, similar to a cutlery insert in a kitchen drawer,bathroom furniture should be compartmentalised for organized living, a space for everything.

Heated towel rails and radiators transcend into pieces of art, a statement decorative wall panel rather than just something to heat a room or hang a towel on.

Flexibility was also a focus, bathrooms are such a personal space, manufactures are recognising this and reacting by offering more choice and individuality within their products.

Jaime Hayon’s new Glamorous collection for ‘Bisazza bagno’was a unique range managing to incorporate many of the trend colours and finishes, choices of black and white, copper and chrome, white or black marble, the collection has expanded to a complete the existing range with brassware and showering solutions. Once again Jaime managed to present something fresh and exciting".

Following a successful trip to ISH 2011. Hayley Tarrington, C.P. Hart Senior Designer, reviews the trends coming out of Europe's biggest bathroom exhibition. "The resounding impression from the ISH fair in Frankfurt was one focused on recovery for the industry, the majority of suppliers were concentrating on displaying products that were easy to sell, great quality and extremely functional, whilst the trends we identified at ISH were a continuation of what we saw at the end of last year in Italy.

The colour palette we can continue to see over the next year remains quite classic and understated; monochrome colours of black, white and grey as seen here in our exclusive Hoxton collection - black with silver pillow decor.

Then a warmer palette of mushroom, mink and cappuccino, which is a more luxurious and sophisticated option, as seen in our new Twenty collection. Both provide completely timeless solutions, which is a vital request from many of our clients.

The actual application of colour was far more interesting; by combining different colours resulting in dual finishes on furniture, ceramics and even baths. Similar to our Stone One free standing bath, which is available in a choice of exterior materials and upholstered fabrics.

Tunbridge Wells update

With the new Tunbridge Wells showroom due for its grand opening on Thursday 1st July, the blog took the time to "fish" for news on how preparations are coming along at C.P. Hart's newest showroom.

The first major developments started back in March, with the external building being painted and display products being ordered.

Display products were delivered during April, and work moved inside the magnificent 4 floor building, with lighting and heating installations, preparing for the start of display builds.

All of the external signage has now gone up, product displays are well under way, with the only hiccup occuring when a supplier's container was held in customs due to dead Salmon! However this will not affect or delay the proposed opening date.

"The showroom is nearing completion, just some of the finishing touches to be added, all getting very exciting!" says C.P. Hart Senior Designer, Hayley Tarrington.

The GOOD DESIGN award is the oldest and the world’s most recognized prize for design excellence worldwide, with hundreds of products submitted, coming from all over the world, ranging from a manned NASA Mars Exploration Vehicle for 2030 to a water filtering system for rural South Africa.

The best designers and retailers in the kitchen and bathroom industry were revealed earlier this week at the kbbreview Industry Awards, the annual awards are designed to reward and acknowledge excellence in room design, product innovation and business practice within the kitchen and bathroom industry in the UK.

Categories included awards for best showroom, best retailer, and kitchen and bathroom design across varying budgets.

Congratulations to C.P.Hart designer Monita Cheung, winning the Young Designer Award for Bathrooms (age 25 and under), shown above with Senior designer Hayley Tarrington.

Over 800 people gathered at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham alongside the kbb Birmingham exhibition. Host Hugh Dennis helped give out 18 awards covering design projects for domestic and contract customers, as well as best showroom and Master Retailer.

KBB nominations for two C.P. Hart designers

Two of C.P. Hart's brightest young designers are nominated for the KBB Design Award 2010.

Waterloo-based Dan Cook has been nominated for the Designer award for Bathrooms - Contracts and House Builders, for his work on the master en-suite at the Drive - Ickenham, for Fusion residential.

Also hailing from C.P. Hart's flagship showroom, Monita Cheung has been nominated for the Young Designer Award for Bathrooms (age 25 and under), once again working for Fusion residential. Monita's nomination is based on her work with seven contract bathrooms for homes aimed at the family market.

A showcase of the winning entries for all categories will be at the KBB show in Birmingham in March 2010, with the award ceremony in the evening.

A special mention should also be made to Trina Atkinson of C.P. Hart contracts, Trina worked alongside both designers on the above projects.

VAT rates information

The government has advised that the standard VAT rate will return to 17.5% on the 1^st January 2010.

Currently the standard VAT rate is 15%, however, as of the 1^stJanuary 2010 we will be legally obligated to re-calculate any outstanding order balances at the 17.5% VAT rate for orders that have not been delivered prior to the 1^st January 2010.

We wanted to make you aware of the steps that can be taken to ensure that any outstanding orders retain the lower VAT rate of 15%. You can:

Arrange for your goods to be delivered prior to 1^st January 2010, or
Pay any outstanding order balances by 1^st January 2010

"So many people forget about storage. It is so important to remember that a beautiful bathroom can be totally spoiled with clutter. If you don’t like the idea of a large cabinet in your bathroom, then concealed storage areas can be created with the clever use of subtly lit alcoves.

Lighting is also incredibly important in helping to create the right ambiance in a bathroom and is often overlooked in the initial planning stages. Everything from task lighting to generating an ambient and relaxing atmosphere should be considered, even down to adding a few scented candles to the edge of the bath to achieve a romantic mood.

Water systems are often forgoten about. Engage the services of a reputable plumber that can advise you of the technicalities of your existing water system. If it needs to be replaced, it is better to know so you can budget for this, rather than finding out half way through the project and have a large added expenditure that you hadn't planned for."

How to plan a bathroom

Advice from Hayley Tarrington, Senior Designer at C.P. Hart, on how best to plan a bathroom ...

"For any bathroom whether it is big or small, the same principals apply; create focal points and maximise the space. For small bathrooms the optimum solution is to give the impression of space. This can be achieved by wet-room or flush fitted showers, frameless glass screens, wall mounted brassware and concealed fittings. Wall mounted WC’s and basins keep as much of the floor exposed as possible helping to achieve a feeling of space. If storage is needed, try to keep the units low - ideally under the basin - in order to keep as much of the top of the room open.

Mirrors are also a great way to achieve an illusion of space and in some cases can actually be a more cost effective solution to tiling. Maximising the space is crucial to achieving a functional bathroom in a smaller room.

With large bathrooms you can usually create a few focal areas within the space with a freestanding bath, large shower and double vanity area, yet it still important to plan the function. You don’t want to step out of the shower and have to walk across the room to grab a towel. I tend to recommend keeping hard surfaces to a minimum in large bathroom which softens the space and creates more of a living bathroom. Use soft furnishings like a chair or a piece of furniture as otherwise it can feel quite clinical and cold."

C.P.Hart recently visited the Salone del Mobile furniture exhibition in Milan Italy.

Mink, cappuccino and taupe are just some of the words to describe the key colour palette that was on show this year.

In terms of texture we noticed the use of shiny and matt materials, for example mixing wood with glass or polished concrete. Another noticeable trend was to move away from minimalist flat clean surfaces and introduce texture and depth. Upholstered or raised surfaces on furniture or walls creates interest to these predominantly flat surfaces.

Artist / designer Jaime Hayon will be showcasing an installation named ‘The Tournament’, a giant chess game situated between the two fountains, in Trafalgar square during this September's London Design Festival.

‘The Tournament’ will be based on the battle of Trafalgar, between the British Navy and the combined fleets of the Spanish and French Navy. Hayon will draw his personal view of the battle by creating 32 hand-painted designs demonstrating the different finishes, scale and techniques achieved in porcelain. Figures of up to 180 cm high will be mounted on wheels so they can be moved around the giant board as the game is played. His aim is to give insight and exposure to the craft of ceramics. Inspired by English culture and its symbolism, Hayon’s designs will reflect on symbols of British culture.

The visit will also include a full overview of the Hansgrohe and AXOR design ranges as well as in-depth technical specification training.

The seminar will start at 10am and will finish at approximately 4:30pm, lunch and light refreshments will be provided on the day. The seminar is offered free of charge and 4 CPD points can be claimed for RIBA and BIDA members.
